Expressionism as an art movement began in the early
20th century. It had it’s roots in
African cultures. The style emerged
in 1905.
The leaders of this movement sought to change the traditional way of illustrating nature as it actually looked.
Instead the movement sought to use vibrant colors, wild abstract shapes and emotive subject matter became dominant.
VINCENT VAN GOGH
Born 1853 to 1890 Color was the chief symbol of
expression Van Gogh finest works were produced
in less than three years in a technique that grew more and more impassioned in brushstroke, in symbolic and intense color, in surface tension, and in movement and vibration of form and line
EDVARD MUNCH
December 12, 1863 to January 23, 1944.
Norwegian Symbolist painter, printmaker and an important forerunner of expressionistic art.
In 1881 Munch enrolled at the Royal School of Art and Design of Kristiania
The Scream painted in 1893 is one of his most well known paintings.
