NOTE: Laser-based systems require a clear field of vision for accurate range finding, so
the laser must be mounted in the grille or behind the windshield (which provides
additional protection against dirt and moisture). Radar-based systems, by comparison,
are more expensive, but can be mounted behind plastic bumper covers and are
unaffected by dirt or weather conditions.

ACC’li otomatik
frenleme; tekerlek fren merkezleri ve izolasyon valfleri arasındaki hidrolik
akışkanı ayarlamakta, değişken izolasyonlu valflerden [variable insulation
valve - VIV] yararlanır [6].
ACC SİSTEMİNİN AKTİF FREN MÜDAHALESİ (dvm.): VIV teknolojisi, aşırı derecede düşük
ası ç atı lı selenoid valfin delikleri arası da frenleme akışka ı ı kıs a fonksiyonunu icra
eder.
ugü kü e düstriyel pazarlarda mevcut olan geleneksel ON / OFF tarzı selenoid valflerin
sı ırla aları ı üstesi de gelmektedir.
Taşıttaki ACC sistemi üç durumda devre dışı kalır. Bunlar;
1. “ürücü Frene Bastığı da: ACC devre dışı kalır. 2. “ürücü Taşıtı Hızı ı Arttırdığı da: ACC aktif kalır; fakat sistem, eğer yeni bir seyir hızı
ayarlanmazsa sürü ü gazı keser kesmez taşıt daha ö e ayarlanan hıza dö er. 3. Ö deki Engeli Algıla a/“apta a Sistemi [Forward Obstacle Detection System]:
ACC’ i taşıtı frenlemesi içi hız kesme ko trolü; ABS odülatörü, kontrol ele a lı frenleme uygula ası [brake-by wire] yada akıllı ası ç arttırı ıyla [smart booster] yapılır. Akıllı ası ç arttırı ı kullanmayla hız kesme ko trolü de; ası ç arttırı ı içi deki vakumun
ayarla ası ve hava akış valfini kontrol etmesiyle yapılır. Son kontrol ele a ları a sahip bir
frenleme uygula ası daki hız kesme ko trolü; tekerleklere frenleme uygulayan her bir
tekerlekteki son kontrol ele a ı a frenleme sinyali gö der eyle yapılır.
Ayrı a taşıtı

Kaynak: “BMW.com.tr” web sitesi, BMW Teknoloji Rehberi (Erişim Tarihi: 03/04/2014).
Özetle… Hız Kontrol Sistemi (Cruise Control System – CCS), özellikle şehirlerarası trafikte, ara ı
sabit bir hızda seyrini ü kü kıla bir yardı ı sistemdir. Trafiği yoğu ol adığı otoyol
vb. yollarda sürü ü, izin verilen azami hızı geç e ek içi bir gözü hız göstergesi de, sürekli olarak araç hızı ı sabit tutmaya çalış aktadır. Özellikle yol eği i i değiş esiyle
hızı düzelt ek içi gaz pedalı a üdahale ihtiya ı duy aktadır. Hız kontrol sistemi, sürü üyü bu zahmetten kurtarmak a a ıyla tasarla ıştır.
bir sürüş i ka ı kaza a aktır.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) The basic function of Adaptive Cruise Control relies on the conventional
cruise control system (vehicle-speed controller), which maintains a desired
speed specified by the driver. In addition, ACC can adapt vehicle speed to
changing traffic conditions by means of automatic acceleration, deceleration
or braking. This system thus maintains the vehicle's distance to the vehicle
driving in front as a function of road speed.
Distance sensor: The most important component in an ACC system is a
sensor which measures the distance, the relative speed and the relative
position of the preceding vehicles. Maximum performance is achieved – even
in poor weather conditions – with a radar sensor.
The radar sensor operates at a frequency of ... 77 GHz which was specially
allocated for ACC. Three beams are emitted simultaneously for measurement
purposes. The beams reflected by the preceding vehicles are analyzed
regarding their propagation time, Doppler shift and amplitude ratio, and from
these factors the distance, relative speed, and relative position are
calculated.
Course Setting
To ensure reliable ACC operation, no matter what the situation – e.g. also on
curves/bends – it is essential that the preceding vehicles are allocated to the
correct lane(s). For this purpose, the information from the ESP sensor system (yaw
rate, steering-wheel angle, wheel speeds and lateral acceleration) is evaluated
with regard to the ACC-equipped vehicle's actual curve status. Further information
on the traffic flow is obtained from the radar signals.
Video imaging and navigation systems are also being considered for future
assistance in defining the courses taken by the vehicles.
Active brake intervention
Experience has shown that deceleration by means of throttle closing is not
sufficient for ACC operation. Only the inclusion of brake intervention makes it
possible for longer follow-on control operations with ACC without the need for
frequent driver interventions. ESP provides the possibility of braking without driver
intervention. ACC permits only "soft" brake interventions. Emergency braking due
to the sudden appearance of obstacles (e.g. the slow-moving vehicle in front
suddenly changing its lane) is therefore not possible.

Adaptive Cruise Control Though most people think cruise control is more of a convenience option than a
safety feature, next generation adaptive cruise control systems are combining both.
Conventional cruise control systems simply maintain a preset speed. The driver
presses a button to set the speed, and a servo or actuator on the throttle linkage
maintains that speed until the driver steps on the brake, changes the speed setting
up or down, or disengages the cruise control.
Adaptive cruise control (ACC), by comparison, is a s art system that actively
maintains a preset distance between vehicles rather than a preset speed. A laser or
radar range finder sensor in the front of the vehicle measures the distance to the
vehicle ahead. The driver then selects a distance that suits the driving conditions, and
the system automatically maintains that distance as traffic speeds up and slows
down. This makes adaptive cruise control much better than conventional cruise
control for driving in heavy traffic, and it reduces the risk of rear ending another
vehicle if the driver is ’t paying attention.
Laser-based systems require a clear field of vision for accurate range finding, so the
laser must be mounted in the grille or behind the windshield (which provides
additional protection against dirt and moisture). Radar-based systems, by
comparison, are more expensive, but can be mounted behind plastic bumper covers
and are unaffected by dirt or weather conditions.
http://www.tomorrowstechnician.com/Article/72504/staying_active_with_vehicle_electronics_technology.aspx
Adaptive Cruise Control (cont.)
The adaptive cruise control module (which may be its own separate module or
integrated into the body control module) interacts not only with the throttle, but
also the brake system to speed up or slow down the vehicle as needed. This
requires a lot of two-way communication, data sharing and feedback via the
vehicle’s controller area network system. The active cruise control module needs
inputs from its range finder sensor as well as vehicle speed, throttle position and
braking status so it can calculate and maintain the proper following distance.
Consequently, if there are any communication faults on the CAN bus, or the
vehicle has lost input from a key sensor such as the laser or radar range finder,
the vehicle speed sensor or throttle position sensor, the system a ’t function.
The same is true if it a ’t communicate with the throttle control system and
brakes to regulate vehicle speed. Any of these faults should set one or more
codes and make adaptive cruise control unavailable until the problem has been
diagnosed and repaired.
Diagnostics currently require a factory scan tool and software to run system self-
tests and to check the range fi der’s inputs. Replacement modules and range
sensors are currently dealer-only parts, but that will likely change as time goes
on and these systems become more common.

by
Neera Sharma

under the guidance of
Prof. Krithi Ramamritham
Motivation
• Intelligent automotive applications require
efficient management of time-sensitive data.
• Existing approaches for ACC design
– Control theory based
– Ad hoc data management
• Systematic data management could improve the
efficiency of control theory driven approaches.
• We propose a model for designing a real-time
data repository for ACC.
Outline
• Introduction to ACC
• Functional Model
• Data Management in ACC
– Real-time repository model
• Task scheduling in the model
– Used techniques and performance results
• Mode Change Behavior of ACC
– Issues in mode change design
Adaptive Cruise Control
• ACC
– Controls vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance
from leading vehicle, automatically.
– Detects lead vehicle using sensors.
– Adjusts speed based on the velocity and distance
from detected vehicle.
– Increases safety and driver comfort.
– Next step towards fully autonomous vehicles.
How ACC works?
– Radar sensor detects lead obstacle and returns its
velocity and separation from ACC host.
– Controller unit calculates required safe-distance and
desired velocity.
– Cruise controller regulates the host speed to the
desired speed using throttling and braking.

Calculating Safe-Distance
• Two kinds of policies: static & dynamic
• We calculate safe distance as a function of relative velocity
(dynamic)[5].
Sd = Sm + Sa
Sm = minimum separation , Sa = additional gap for safety

Real-Time Data Repository Design
for ACC
Design Concerns • Data Freshness
– Values in repository
• obtained from sensors
• reflect the latest values of vehicle parameters.
– Freshness of a data is defined
• In time domain : update periodically
current time – TS(d ) <= VI(d )
• In value domain : update if
|d(t) – d t’ | <= d
• Temporal characteristics of tasks are derived from the properties of data.

Why Two-level Data Store?
• Controller decisions change when there are significant changes repository1.
• Repository2 is updated only when difference in the values crosses a threshold value (on-demand update).
• Two level data store minimizes contention.
• OD updates reduces unnecessary updates in the system
Design for a Chain of Vehicles
• A chain of ACC vehicles should be stable.
– spacing errors does not increase from head to tail
traversal of the chain : String Stability
– for chain of vehicles
i = (xi-1 - xi) – Di (Range Error )
Ri = vi-1 – vi (Range Rate Error )
Di : is desired separation, vi : velocity of ith vehicle and,
(xi-1 – xi ) : current inter-vehicle separation
– A uniform vehicle string is string stable if -
|| i+1|| <= || i ||
Upper-level Controller
• Calculates desired speed .
• We use UTMRI algorithm[4] to determine the desired speed
Vi,des = vi-1 + i /T0 + c. Ri
Vi,des : desired velocity,
vi-1 : velocity of leading vehicle
T0 and c are constants.
Lower Level Controller
• Modelled as first order linear system.
• Determines the throttle & brake actuator commands to track
the desired velocity using [4].
τ . vcurr + vcurr = vdes
• Using proportional control law desired velocity is mapped to
required throttle position using-
α t = Kp (vcurr - vdes)

Tasks in the Model
• Sensor reading tasks :
– periodic with known computation time.
• On-demand update tasks (Update R2 + Read R2):
– aperiodic with known minimum inter-arrival time and worst case computation time.
• Low-level Controller Tasks :
– periodic with known computation time.
• Other Tasks : (logging, lane monitoring, road condition etc):
– Periodic with known computation time.
• Periodic tasks are scheduled using EDF.

How to Schedule Aperiodic OD
tasks?
• OD tasks need predictable service guarantees.
• Bandwidth Reservation Techniques:
– Reserve a share of CPU bandwidth.
• Constant Bandwidth Server(CBS):
– S = (C, T, B), characterized by maximum capacity(C),
period(T) and bandwidth(B=C/T).
– Task can execute for time C within period T.
– Provides hard-real ti e guara tees if task’s orst ase parameters are known.
Adaptive CBS Technique
• Adapts required bandwidth for a task using error correction mechanism.
• T is equal to the period of sensor reading task.
• CBS scheduling error is calculated as:
• CBS bandwidth is adjusted using capacity correction:
= CBS deadli e – task deadline
C = ( / Ts )* cs
Simulator Setup
• We simulate the model on RTLinux kernel.
– Threads communicate using shared memory.
• For CBS :
– We use application level CBS patch on RTLinux.
– Modify it for automatic bandwidth adaptation.
Simulations Results
Reserved Bandwidth CBS Scheduling Error
•Reserved bandwidth converges to value 0.001
•Corresponding CBS scheduling error reduces to 0 after few steps.
Mode Change Behavior of the
System
• Response requirement of ACC vehicle change
with the change in relative velocity and
separation between host and ACC vehicle.
• We design ACC with three modes of operations :
active, non-critical and critical.
• In mode change task set and frequencies of tasks
change.
• We assume that a task set is known for each of
the three modes.
Preliminary experiments for Mode Change
• We assume that controller operates with frequency
50Hz : in active mode
70Hz : non-critical mode
100Hz : critical mode
and choose corresponding values for sampling time(T) and time constant(τ) for each mode.
• Conditions for mode change: – From active to non-critical
• an obstacle is detected within a predefined range.
- From non-critical to critical
- the difference between desired speed and current speed is greater than a threshold.
Simulations : Without Mode Change
Sudden decrease in separation, because the host vehicle
decreases slowly.
Simulations : With Mode Change
Host velocity fluctuates due to frequent mode change.
r1
r2
r3 r4
Simulation : Avoiding Frequent Mode Change
Frequent mode change is avoided by forcing the system to
stay in one mode for a minimum time
Enhancement to the Mode Change Scheme
• Choose task set for each mode at run time using service level controller, admission controller and feedback.
– Service level controller : controls workload inside the system.
– Admission controller : admits new tasks in the system.
Conclusions and Future Work
• Systematic approach for handling time-sensitive ACC data improves the
performance.
• Use of on-demand update scheme reduces the no of updates.
• Adaptive bandwidth server technique provide service guarantees to aperiodic
tasks.
• There is a need for ACC design with multiple operational modes.
• A principled approach for choosing no. of modes and deriving conditions for
mode change is required.
