Marlton Township ManagerBill Cromie presented the pro-posed 2013 township budget, which included a $59.65 increasefor the average assessed home of$271,200.
The increase correlates to thetownships responsibility to paymore than $1.5 million in tax ap-peals. The township receives 15percent of property tax dollars, but is required to pay 100 percentof the tax appeals, according toCromie.
The proposed budget of $32.8million indicates a spending de-
crease of $26,571 from 2012.We do not have a spending
problem. We have a revenue prob-lem, Cromie said.
The township utilized surplus, which would have otherwise car-ried over to next year.
The tax levy would provide im-mediate revenue and be equal to$1.15 per week for residents.

Widening Route 70 wouldalleviate flow problems
With all the widening of Route 70 overthe past few years, taking out the circle andadding more lights, to make the trafficflow better, it all comes to a screechinghalt at Greenbrook Drive.
Down from six lanes to Route 73, then
four lanes for a mile or so, then to one eachway.Want traffic to flow better? Widen the
road to at least four lanes, two each way.I remember the days when you would
have to sit and wait only on Friday nights. That has changed to every weeknight. Fri-day nights have turned into a nightmare.Thank you for listening.

In November, New Jersey voters
will have the opportunity to ap-
prove a bill that would increase the
states minimum wage from $7.25 per
hour to $8.25 per hour, starting in Sep-
tember 2014. An approving vote would
also kick in automatic cost-of-living in-
creases each year based on the Con-sumer Price Index.
In his State of the Union address
this year, President Obama recom-
mended raising the minimum wage to
$9 per hour. If Congress approves of
that measure, it would take effect na-
tionwide.
Not surprisingly, though, small busi-
ness owners in New Jersey are over-
whelmingly against raising the mini-
mum wage. The New Jersey chapter of
the National Federation of Independ-
ent Business showed that 93 percent of
its members oppose the move. NFIB
Director Laurie Ehlbeck called the re-
sults one of the most one-sided shes
ever seen. And it should be no surprise as to
why.
The states, and the countrys,
biggest current employment problem
isnt that workers are paid too little; its
that there arent enough jobs available.
Raising the minimum wage, forcing
small business owners to spend more
money, is not a solid tactic to encour-age hiring. The focus should be on in-
centivizing small business owners to
hire more workers, not to pay their
current workers more money.
The governments logic is misguided
if it believes that the reason that un-
employed workers wont take entry-
level jobs is that the salary isnt high
enough. Thats part of the problem,
true, but thats mainly because our
government is incentivizing people not
to work, with the structure of unem-
ployment benefits being what theyve
been for so long now.It would be a shame for a bill like
this to pass at a time when the states
job market just reported positive gains.
The state Labor Department reported
recently that New Jersey gained 66,400
jobs in 2012, the largest such jump
since 2000.
Sure, were still way off the pre-re-
cession employment rate, but at least
its a start.
Our local and federal governments
need to find a way incentivize small
businesses to hire, instead of burden-
ing them with yet another added cost
of doing business.
in our opinion
Put people to workCreating more jobs, not raising minimum wage, is the answer
Your thoughts?
Do you plan on voting for or against thestate constitutional amendment thatwould raise New Jerseys minimumwage by $1 to $8.25 per hour?

Seeing a need and knowinghow popular running programsare, Gary Hendri, owner of Ath-letic Fitness Concepts, LLC re-cruited volunteer coaches to offera 10-week training program.
The personal fitness companyand volunteers teamed up toteach people how to run or walktheir first 5k race, while at thesame time part of the registra-tion fees went directly to theMarlton-based charity.
Participants in the programwill spend 10 weeks graduallyand safely increasing theirmileage until they have thestrength, stamina and confidenceto walk or run the WIA-KIA 5krace, held in Medford each year
on Memorial Day weekend. The coaches, who include a
personal trainer, physical thera-pist and experienced running en-thusiasts, provide support, en-couragement, and information tothe walkers and runners.

more than anything, Sweeneysaid.
To sweeten the deal, Sweeneywas named to the second-teamAll-Big East team for the secondconsecutive year.
Its a big deal, its exciting andit gives you a little motivation andquiet confidence, said Sweeney, afifth-year senior with her under-graduate degree in human servic-
es, who is going to school fornursing.Sweeney is a team leader, ac-
cording to head coach Harry Per-retta.
Lauras role as a player is todo a little bit of everything score, rebound, give assists, stealand block, said Perretta, a coach-ing veteran now in his 35th sea-son with Villanova. As a captain, her role is to set a good example,
work hard every day and be a pos-itive influence for everyone.
According to Perretta,Sweeney is a 24/7 athlete, rarely
taking a break from practice.Sweeney leads the team in both
scoring and rebounding.Without her we wouldnt be in
the NCAA tournament, Perrettasaid.
Before Sweeneys career at Vil-lanova, she was a dominant ath-lete at Cherokee High School.
According to Villanovas web-site, Sweeney was a four-year let-terwinner, varsity starter and all-conference pick, a two-time All-
South Jersey selection, 2008Burlington County Player of theYear, MVP of the 2008 All-StateNew Jersey All-Star Game andsenior team captain.
Additionally, Sweeney holdshigh school records for mostpoints scored with 2,037 and mostrebounds with 1,285.
I loved playing in the schooldistrict. I still keep tabs on theschools, it was a competitive
league to play in, Sweeney said.I think it had a lot to do with mecoming to play at Villanova.
Perretta took notice of
Sweeney her sophomore year, while she was playing with theRunning Rebels, an AAU basket-ball team.
She was a very dominant play-er in South Jersey.
We were lucky enough to gether to come to Villanova, Perret-ta said.
Sweeney was redshirted, orable to practice and workout withthe team but unable to compete ingames, her freshman year.
Perretta has noticed drasticimprovement in Sweeneys game.Ive seen her grow in terms of
confidence. She wasnt confi-dent, he said. She needed to un-derstand how good she was. Be-cause shes so shy and so un-selfish she needed to know shecould exert herself and take theshot.
Sweeney attributes her well-rounded understanding of thegame to Perretta.
I understood what the coach
needs and wants more than ever. Istill am nervous, but I rely on thelast three years that have broughtme into my last year, Sweeneysaid.
Sweeney is focused on theneeds of the team and dedicatedto taking the Lady Wildcats as faras possible.
I think Im keeping the teamgrounded and reminding themwe made the tournament for areason and weve gotten better asthe games have gone on,Sweeney said.
I had fun every year but with-out a doubt this was the best yearplaying basketball. I can relate itto my teammates and coaches.Ive loved every minute of it.

According to Cromie, the costper resident in Evesham Town-ship is $721, less than the Burling-ton County average of $859.
Included in the budget is theproposed $3.1 million capitalbudget, encompassing neighbor-hood improvements and the roadre-pavement project. The budgetis financed utilizing a $150,000cash down payment and capitalbonds.
If every town in Burlington
County did business the way wedid business, it would save $61million to taxpayers in Burling-ton County, Mayor Randy Brownsaid.
Brown compared EveshamTownship to neighboring townsin Camden County, noting itwould be No. 1.
I should be delivering a tax de-crease, Brown said. Weve doneeverything right, but its the mu-nicipalitys responsibility to payall tax appeal losses. Even though
the township takes 15 cents in, wehave to pay the whole dollar out.
According to Brown, Eveshamreceives reimbursement on losttax appeals, accounting for 30 per-cent of losses. The other 70 per-cent, approximately $1 million, iseaten by the township.
The township spent $700,000 fortax collectors and assessors, noneof which is refunded or used asshared services, somethingBrown would like to see changed.
Brown is proposing to ap-proach the taxing entitiesthrough a bill to reimburse thetownship in full for the amount ofmoney due for tax appeals. Addi-tionally, Brown hopes to work ona shared services agreement withall the taxing entities about thetax collector and assessor.
Concurrently, Brown asked thecouncil to consider supportingstate Senate bill 1896.
According to Cromie, the billwould allow schools and other en-
tities to create a reserve for taxappeals, removing the financialburden from the township.
Im calling on our Legislatureto enact and pass this bill, with acompanion bill in the Assembly
