Once again, we must remind eve- ryone of the need to mindful and cautious when dropping off or picking up your children before and after school. Please be pa- tient and refrain from using your horn. This is particularly impor- tant at the end of the school day as there are times when our drop off lane becomes congested. We have asked staff and students to ensure that they leave the building imme- diately upon dismissal if they are being driven home at the end of the school day. Delaying getting to their car results in cars waiting in the pickup lane which creates a backlog of cars waiting to enter our parking lot. Please encourage your children to move quickly to their waiting vehicles at 2:50 p.m. so that we can keep the flow of traffic moving. We hope that all of our stu- dents and their families had a safe and enjoyable March Break. It’s hard to believe that we are only a couple of months away from the end of this school year! Our staff and students are very busy in and out of the classroom and Markham Gateway continues to be a thriving place of learn- ing for all. Within this edition of the newsletter, please take note of additional community and learning opportunities that may be of interest. With the onset of the spring ‘thaw’ and some rainy days ahead, we can expect a bit more mud and dirt around the school grounds. To reduce the amount of grime that gets tracked around the school, we do appreciate everyone’s con- tinued use of paved walkways and designated entrances for student drop-off and pick- up. Dressing for the day’s forecasted weather with jack- ets, umbrellas, and boots or other appropriate outdoor shoes, also helps students stay dry and comfortable while at school. Our students have been very understanding when we have had to limit their recess play to the pave- ment only. With the few warm and bright days that we have enjoyed so far, it is such a pleasure to see the students’ moods brighten while enjoy- ing fresh air and friendship during recess. Unstructured, independent and free play is such an important part of childhood and we hope that students can also reap the benefits of outdoor play beyond the school day. The York Region District School Board’s three main areas of focus are: Mathematics, Mod- ern Learning and Mental Health and Well Being. We at Markham Gateway Public School are en- gaging in professional learning to support all three of these areas of focus. There was a letter shared with our community on Friday which briefly outlined some of the changes we will be focusing on at the school in order to sup- port Modern Learning. We strive to create the conditions for learning for students and staff to allow for learning connections which are rich and meaningful and help build skills and attitudes necessary to meet the demands of an ever changing world. Please help us on our journey by donating items to help create a Maker Space in our Learning Commons (Library). We are also very excited to host Chef Devan Rajkumar at Mark- ham Gateway P.S. on Wednes- day, April 13 beginning at 6:00 p.m. This event, focused on healthy living, is part two of a three part series with our local school partners Ellen Fairlcough, Parkland and Cedarwood Public Schools.
