Compared to last month: Holstein steers weighing under 500 lbs traded 14.00 – 18.00 higher. Holstein steers weighing over 500 lbs traded mostly 4.00 – 8.00 higher on comparable sales. Trading activity was active on very good buyer demand. The supply consisted of about 91% Holstein steers, 5% Jersey steers and the remaining balance being Holstein heifers. STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING Compared to last week: Slaughter and feeder lambs were steady on comparable trades. Slaughter ewes traded 1.00 lower and slaughter bucks traded 3.00 higher. All goat classes are compared to a very thin test last week. Kid goats were steady on comparable trades. Nannies/Does traded 5.00 higher and bucks/billies traded 1.00 lower. Trade activity was moderate on moderate buyer demand. In the sheep supply 36% slaughter lambs, 42% slaughter ewes and bucks, 13% feeder lambs, with the balance being ewes returning to the country. The goat supply consisted of 56% slaughter kids, 20% slaughter nannies, 15% slaughter billies and wethers and balance being replacement nannies. Sheep and lambs sold on a per cwt basis and goats sold on a per head basis unless otherwise noted.

Compared to Wednesday’s Stock Show Special: Steer calves weighing under 700 pounds traded mostly 5.00 to 6.00 lower, with instances of 8.00 lower calves weighing between 550 and 600 pounds. Yearling type steers weighing over 700 pounds traded 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Heifers traded mostly 3.00 to 6.00 where comparable sales were noted.

Wednesday, April 9, 2014Over 500 head of slaughter cattle were sold today, with demand high for lean cattle in all areas. Bulls continue their upward trend, topping the market today at $134.50/cwt. Beef slaughter cows were no exception with the demand for lean cows very high, ranging from $102.00-108.00/cwt. Fat beef cows were slightly higher and steady compared to last week. Holstein slaughter cows were steady to $1 higher in comparison to last week, and similar to beef cows, the demand for lean Holstein cows was high with prices in the upper nineties.
