What is Marketing?

The action of promoting and selling products or services including market research and advertising.

Forms of marketing for our product

One form of marketing for our product could be to use the internet, specifically social media such as Facebook and Twitter. We could either create our own page on these websites or pay them to display our advertisements, however it would be more beneficial to create our own page as it is free so would greatly reduce our overall costs of making our film. The only advantage of paying websites to display our advertisements would be that they would feature on the homepage capturing the attention of potential customers, rather than users having to search manually for our product or perhaps being completely unaware of its existence.

Another form of marketing for our product could be through magazines or newspapers. It would be beneficial to advertise in this way as a large majority of people already read newspapers and magazines therefore our advertisement would reach a wider audience. However it would be expensive to advertise in this way especially as the costs will accumulate over time.

We could also advertise through flyers that are delivered to peoples houses and through posters that are placed in areas such as shop windows, lamposts, buildings etc. This would capture peoples attention and be noticeable to potentially hundreds of passerby’s, easily spreading the word about our product. However, we would need permission to advertise in certain locations such as shops and the printing costs of all the flyers/posters would be very high.

Finally, we could advertise using TV and radio. It would be highly beneficial to advertise in this way as it can reach a large number of people specifically on TV, and adverts are repeated more than once which is beneficial in promoting our film. However, the success of our advertisement depends on the channel it is displayed on. Our target audience is children/young teenagers so if our advert is only on historical or environmental channels for example, it won’t reach our target audience and will only be seen by people who are potentially not interested in our production.

ConclusionWe have decided that advertising through social media would be the most beneficial due to the large amount of people that use the internet and it would easily be able to reach our target audience. The costs would also be relatively low if we made our own webpage and the expense of paying an existing site to display our advertisement would still be cheaper than advertising in other ways such as through the TV. Also, posters may be advantageous if we sourced a cheap printing company as we could advertise in a wide range of locations and capture the attention of passerby’s who weren’t previously aware that they wanted to watch our film but may be persuaded once they’ve seen our advertisement.

Another reason why we chose social media as the best method of marketing is because we looked at examples of already existing

advertisements on Facebook, for example the printscreen of the Star Trek advertisement, and saw how informative it is. The Facebook user can not only watch the trailer but can also easily click a link to buy it immediately, and all the vital information such as the price, main actors and the date it was produced is clearly displayed. Furthermore, the advertisement is eye catching and draws the audience in, persuading them to buy the product

with phrases such as ‘buy now!!!’
