Costa Rica grows everything from beans to taro root, including rice and avocados, and from palm hearts to passion fruit. The rich volcanic soil is excellent for growing crops.
Recently I put on my official BCPMA cap – the white one – and visited my favourite produce stand, located between the villages of Brasilito and Potrero. The place has no parking lot, and roadside parking is narrow and dangerous, but at least this particular road is paved.
The store has no refrigeration (or even air conditioning – ambient temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius), no cash register, no dress code, (the cashier is the guy without a shirt) and the scale being used probably should be in a museum, and its accuracy is well, open to question.
Oh, and nowhere will you see pricing. No signs. I think what happens is, the owner decides on the fly how much his customer can afford to pay, and charges accordingly.
Anyway, I bought a heavy bag full of stuff, 12 items in all, consisting of:
The bill was 5,500 calones, or about ten bucks.
Our BCPMA wholesale and retail members can tell me if all that stuff for ten bucks was a good deal, or if I should have double checked the scale!
The last item is a common sight in many parts of Costa Rica – an overloaded pickup truck delivering fresh produce, in this case, among other things, pipa frio (cold coconut juice) directly to your neighbourhood.
We are always in need of volunteers! If you or someone you know would like to make a difference in our industry, please feel free to speak to Margie or one of our directors:[email protected]
