Aboriginal Peoples Survey The Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS)
conducted in 2012 revealed a 10.5% unemployment rate for New
Brunswick (NB) o-reserve Aboriginals. This is very close to the NB
general population. The latest NB Aboriginal data puts the total
unemployment rate at 20.8% (National Household Survey, 2011).

Youth Employment Fund
The Youth Employment Fund provides an opportunity for long term
employment for unemployed individuals between 18-29 years of age.
By being placed with an employer, the youth can gain work
experience and develop skills through basic workplace training,
mentoring and coaching (from the employer).

This dierence could indicate that greater barriers to employment
exist for individuals who live on-reserve compared to those who
live o-reserve.
New Brunswick and the rest of CanadaIn March, 2,100 jobs were
added to the NB economy: 1,100 full-time and 1,000 part-time
positions. The unemployment rate in NB fell slightly from 10.4% to
10.1%, compared to 6.8% nationally (Statistics Canada, Labour Force
Survey).
Shipbuilding: Providing Career OpportunitiesIn 2011, the federal
government awarded Irving Shipbuilding with the contract to build
Arctic Oshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) and Canadian Surface Combatants.
This will lead to career opportunities for Atlantic Canadians over
the next 20-30 years.
Current opportunities in Shipbuilding include positions in:
operations, engineering, logistics, information technology, and
business services.

Did You Know? The Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training
Strategy (ASETS) exists to help Aboriginal people find a job or
upgrade their skills through:
skills development; training for high-demand jobs; job finding;
programs for youth; programs for urban Aboriginal
people with disabilities; and access to childcare. There are
four (4) ASETS agreement holders in New Brunswick: North Shore
Micmac District Council (NSMDC), Saint John River Vally Tribal
Council (SJRVTC), Mawiw Council Inc., and NB Aboriginal Peoples
Council (NBAPC). You can benefit from this service in the
communities by contacting Employment and Training Officers
(ETOs).
