Finally some green shoots of recovery

finding people for jobs, not CV’s for vacancies

Page 2: Market Insight - January 2010

Has the recession now bottomed out? Well

accordingly to the latest figures we finally have reason to believe so, with the rate at which IT

vacancies decreased at the end of 2009 improving to the most positive seen in the past 18 months. And this occurred in what is traditionally looked

upon as the lowest performing period of the year.

As the Scottish market is widely seen as being a quarter behind the market trends and activity of that down south there is more good news as the

UK’s latest results show the number of IT vacancies increased by 1.9% during quarter four. And IT

professionals will be pleased to hear that average salaries also jumped up slightly during this period.

Early signs from the recruitment industry in 2010 have indicated that as is often the case quarter one

began at a frantic pace so it should perhaps not come as much of a surprise when the number of

vacancies demonstrate a substantial increase from those seen in the previous quarter.

However for many the results in quarter two will be the more significant as they will prove to be a very

good indication of whether this initial surge is to continue as a sustained growth. And whether or not the recovery will be a ‘U’ or ‘W’ shape still remains

to be seen.

Latest figures indicate the race is

now on in Scotland’s IT sector for

2010

Impact on Salaries & Contract Rates

Even with the recent market slump the average

salary for IT staff in Scotland remains at 38k.

Six months ago it was Edinburgh that was seen as

Scotland’s highest paying city but more recently

Glasgow has taken over. Aberdeen, even after it’s

recent increase in average salaries remains as the

lowest paying of the bigger cities.

Whilst contract salaries are more evenly matched

across the board Edinburgh again loses out as

Aberdeen comes out on top this time round.

Salaries in each of the categories crept up

with the exception of Digital Marketing

which remained at £32,667.

The average salary of IT graduates

continues to be someway down on what

was earned pre-recession as the volume of

graduate roles continue to drop with the

majority of employers now looking for staff

who can provide an instant return on

investment.

Impact on Supply & Demand

As expected Infrastructure and Support has the

highest rate of supply with Executives shown to be

the lowest.

A number of categories have increased including IT

Sales / Digital Marketing and Software & Web

Development with categories such as Business

Analysis staying very much the same.

In the 4th quarter there was another drop in

vacancies advertised however this was perhaps to

be expected with the month of December

seen as a quieter recruitment period.

The number of permanent roles are decreasing at

less of a rate (10.6%) than those contract roles

which decreased by 18.7% in the last quarter.

There is a clear split evident within the supply

levels of contract candidates with the big four

categories seen to be Software/Web

Development, IT Project Management, Business

Analysis & Infrastructure & Support.
