PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Mike Jones
Baltimore Ski Club Executive Council Meetings
Executive Council Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month starting at 6:30pm. Business meetings are open to all members. Meetings are held at:
PSA Insurance & Financial Services Building 11311 McCormick Road, 5th Floor Hunt Valley, MD
I’m still hoping for a White Christmas, but with only 2 nights of below freezing temperatures so far, I fear that I may be visiting friends and family in my Bermuda shorts for the holiday. I will be seeing some of the white stuff soon as a group of us will be travelling up to Vermont to do some early skiing. I’ve never skied before Christmas, so this will be a first. I’ve been going to the gym, so I won’t embarrass myself out on the slopes. We had a great turnout for our winter expo last month. Many nearby ski resorts attended offering information, deals, and door prizes. Several local ski shops were also there showing the latest in ski technology. I want to thank all the ski shops, resorts and venders for their participation, their donated door prizes and for supporting the club event. A special thanks to LuAnn Snyder for all of her work chairing this spectacular affair. Through your purchases and generosity, we raised over $900 for the Maryland School for the Blind. It was a very good meeting that everyone enjoyed. Traditionally, this is the time of the year that we celebrate and reconnect with our family and friends. How about reconnecting this year with all of your skiing friends at our Annual Holiday Party and Election Night? Bring your appetite. Currently, all incumbent officers are running unopposed. If you would like to run for any office, contact Sharon Albaugh at [email protected]. The Club is reaching release dates soon for all trips where all unsold airline seats, rooms, tickets, etc go back to the wholesaler. After this point, trip leaders may not be able to get these reinstated and if they can it may be at a much higher price. The cost of the Greek Peak trip has been reduced to $398 and now is a carpool. Good deal for a weekend trip. Call Jeff McBride if you are interested. Although many western trips are sold out, vacancies may open due to cancellations. We will let you know through a Constant Contact email about trips that have last minute openings after people on the wait list (if there is one) have been contacted. Sometimes there may be discounts on such said trips. In keeping with the season’s spirit, Mark, Sharon, Gloria and I wish everyone Happy Holidays from the Jones Family
Silver Streak Program - Age 50+ Recapture the thrill of skiing down a snowy slope. Tune up your skills. Get in shape for your next trip out West. Whether you are a beginner or a double diamond skier, we have a class for you. Learn the latest techniques for dynamic turns or step up to a new level of performance. Then relax over lunch with your instructors and fellow Silver Streakers. This group ski lesson is held every Wednesday morning at 10am, beginning January 3rd, and is open to the 'over 50' set.
The program with a 4 hour lift ticket is $56, with an 8 hour lift ticket is $60, and includes a two hour lesson and lunch. Rentals are not included. Register at the Learning Center desk. NOTE: A mid-week, 4-hr flex lift ticket is $59.00. This program includes 4-hr ticket, lessons & lunch for $56.00.
2019 Trips Survey Now Available!!!
It’s time to let your opinion be heard! As members this may be the most important duty you have to perform besides renewing your membership, and signing up for trips, and making your trip payments. Ok, so maybe it’s the 4th most important thing. Whatever. Now is the time to let the Trips Committee know your preferences.
Please go to Survey Monkey and take the survey. It’s very a short 10 question survey. You can link to it from the Baltimore Ski Club Facebook page or if you’re Facebook illiterate (as I am) you can cut and paste the following link into browser: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BQ3HBM8
Currently, only 23 people have filled out the trips survey. Cut & paste the following into your search bar for a short, 10 question, yes/no survey:

We will be collecting warm clothing for students of The Maryland School for the Blind at December meeting. Sort through your ski
attire and pull out items you no longer wear or have outgrown. Sizes needed vary from elementary children to adults up to age 21.
Purchase season and advantage passes at pre-season October prices from Snowtime rep, Teresa at our December holiday party.

Charles Saunders Jazz Collection: Listening Party November 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm| Woodmere (Main) Library In April of 2017, a large donation of Jazz LPs, CDs, DVDs were generously donated to the Traverse Area District Library Sight & Sound Department by longtime library supporter and summer resident of Traverse City, Charles Saunders, who passed away in May 2016. We are excited to share this extraordinary jazz collection with the public. Please join us in the McGuire Community Room, at the TADL Main Library, for a presentation on the collection and to listen to some of the LP collection with Jazz Music Historian and WNMC’s host of Jazz from the Tradition, Fred Nelson. This evening will include listening to LP records from the Saunders Jazz collection featuring musical legends Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa.
About Charles Saunders: Charles N. Saunders was born in Traverse City, Michigan on November 30, 1937. He died on May 21, 2016. He lived his early life in Dearborn MI. He loved the Traverse City Library and its music collection and he kept in touch with the library for many years. Charlie was a longtime resident of Baltimore, Maryland. His massive jazz music collection was over 60 years in the making. His CD collection numbered 7600, his vinyl record collection over 2600. His jazz book collection was over 500 volumes. Perhaps more than anything else, Charlie’s music
was his essence, more than any other of his possessions, his money, or his other accomplishments. Music sustained him. He loved his collector friends and attended annual jazz record collector conventions across the US. He had many lifelong friendships that evolved from his love of jazz and his growing collection of music. He was involved for many years with Osher Learning in Retirement at Towson University as a committee member and lecturer on Jazz topics. Charlie used his collection to bring jazz music to his classes at Osher. He fashioned his courses and listening sessions with the dedication of a college professor. He was loved by all who knew him and attended his courses. Traverse Area District Library is honored to receive Charlie’s jazz collection. While it will take considerable time to evaluate and catalog the thousands of CDs, DVDs, LPs and books, we look forward to sharing his collection with the public and honoring his memory by offering the occasional Jazz lecture and listening party, as he did for many years through Towson University.
