God bless you as you examine His Word, Your servant in Christ,
2Cor. 4:5, Dave 3. Lets read Mark 2:1-5 4. Mark 2:2, and (kai) Mark
2:2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer
room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.
This little book has a disproportionate number of uses of and
(kai). 509 NASU uses out in its 678 verses Out of the 66 books,
Mark comes in 19th in uses This connector ties together the
continuous action of Mark J.V. McGee says his English teacher would
have flunked for this much use of and. Some say its impossible to
end a sentence with and. 5. Mark 2:2, Speaking To Them The Word
YLTMark 2:2 and immediately many were gathered together, so that
there was no more room, not even at the door, and he was speaking
to them the word. . YLT has the most accurate literal So, be like
Jesus; 2 Timothy 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of
season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and
instruction. 6. Mark 2:5, Seeing Their Faith This account is in all
3 synoptics; Matthew 9:2 And they brought to Him a paralytic lying
on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Take
courage, son; your sins are forgiven. Mark 2:5 And Jesus seeing
their faith Luke 5:20 Seeing their faith Matthew 17:20 And He said
to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say
to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed. 7. Mark 2:5,
Seeing Their Faith Mark 2:5 And Jesus seeing their faith said to
the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven. If someone ripped open
the roof, what would we see? What would we see as his need? What
are we most interested in this account? Jesus wasnt distracted by
the roof, He saw their faith and his need for forgiveness of sins.
What is the most important thing in this account? 8. Lets read Mark
2:6-15 Mark 2:6 reasoning in their hearts, Mark 2:8 Immediately
Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within
themselves Mark 2:10 the Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins Jesus was not only claiming to be God, but showing it
9. Mark 2:6, Reasoning In Their Hearts Mark 2:6 But some of the
scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, The
reasoning in their hearts is juxtaposed to their faith. 10. Mark
2:7, Who Can Forgive Sins? Mark 2:7 "Why does this man speak that
way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone? The
scribes were exactly right, in challenging this! I can forgive sins
against me in a relational sense, but not judicially. The DA
decides who he will prosecute under the law. All sins is against
God, and He alone set the punishment for sin, and no amount of
emotional regret, or us forgiving each other, has any impact upon
the penalty of the law. The fine/penalty must be paid. (Romans
6:23) 11. Mark 2:7, Who Can Forgive Sins? Suppose our local sheriff
caught a bank robber, and he knew the man, and knew his desperate
need for money for his childs operation. Could the sheriff forgive
his sin? Yes he could, but the DA decides who he will prosecute
under the law. Suppose our local DA forgives his sin, and decides
not to prosecute? Would he be OK? Its a federal crime, would he be
OK? Suppose the Feds forgave his sin, and decide not to prosecute?
Would he be OK? Exodus 20:15 "You shall not steal. All sin is
against God, and the fine/penalty must be paid. (Romans 6:23) 12.
Mark 2:7, Who Can Forgive Sins? Mark 2:7 "Why does this man speak
that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?
Psalm 51:1A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him,
after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Psalm 51:4 Against You, You
only, I have sinned 13. Mark 2:7, Abstain From Fornication Joe's in
the confessional... "Father, I committed adultery" "The priest
starts thinking of the most promiscuous women in town. "Was it with
Marie Brown?" "I'd rather not say who it was." "Was it with Betty
Smith?" "I'd rather not say," says Joe. So the priest gives him
absolution and Joe leaves. Later, Joe's friend asks if he received
absolution. "Yes, and two very good leads!" 14. Mark 2:7, Who Can
Forgive Sins? Can a priest forgive sins? Can I as a pastor forgive
sins? Only sins against me, and only relationally. I can do nothing
about the broken law! Sin goes out like ripples in a pond, I can do
nothing about the consequences of sin. If 2 fornicators, have a
child out of wedlock, they can forgive each other but the
consequences remain. I can only direct sinners to the only One who
paid the fine/penalty for sin. Jesus Christ Psalm 51:4 Against You,
You only, I have sinned 15. Mark 2:7, Who Can Forgive Sins Matthew
9:6the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins Mark 2:7
who can forgive sins but God alone?" CCC 1461 Since Christ
entrusted to his apostles the ministry of reconciliation,65 bishops
who are their successors, and priests, the bishops collaborators,
continue to exercise this ministry. Indeed bishops and priests, by
virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, have the power to forgive
all sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. (981) CCC 1493 One who desires to obtain reconciliation
with God and with the Church, must confess to a priest all the
unconfessed grave sins he remembers after having carefully examined
his conscience. The confession of venial faults, without being
necessary in itself, is nevertheless strongly recommended by the
Church. 16. Smile First, Forgive First Let us be the first to give
a friendly sign; to nod first, smile first, speak first, and- if
such a thing is necessary- forgive first. Unknown For our own well
being, and for the offenders, and for the relationship between us,
we must forgive. Completely, unconditionally, in a horizontal way,
relationally. Romans 12:19 Never take your own revenge, beloved,
but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE
IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. [Deuteronomy 32:35, Hebrews
10:30] Matthew 6:12 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have
forgiven our debtors. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness. 17. Mark 2:7, Who Can Forgive Sins? Mark
2:7who can forgive sins but God alone? The scribes were exactly
right, in challenging this! Either Jesus is blaspheming, in which
case He is a sinner, not a Savior. Or He is God in the flesh!
Jesus, knowing their thoughts, is claiming to be, and showing that
He is God. 18. Mark 2:10, The Son of Man? Mark 2:6 reasoning in
their hearts, Mark 2:8 Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that
they were reasoning that way within themselves Mark 2:10 the Son of
Man has authority on earth to forgive sins Jesus was not only
claiming to be God, but showing it 19. Who Or What Is Your
Authority Mark 2:10 "But so that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins "-He said to the paralytic,
20. Mark 2:14, In The Tax Booth Mark 2:14 As He passed by, He saw
Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to
him, "Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him. 21. Taxes? Luke
20:22 "Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Romans
13:6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are
servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 22. Mark
2:15 Mark 2:15 And it happened that He was reclining at the table
in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with
Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were
following Him. 23. Mark 2:15, Disciples The word disciples is used
quite a lot by Mark. More than Luke or Acts. The word disciples is
used in 42 verses in Mark in the NASU 24. Mark 2:16, Tax Collectors
And Sinners Mark 2:16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He
was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His
disciples, "Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and
sinners?" 17 And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those
who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did
not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Tax collectors and
sinners are emphasized, it was an affront to them, why would He do
it? 25. Mark 2:17, Sinners Mark 2:17 And hearing this, Jesus said
to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but
those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but
sinners. If you are self righteous, or religious righteous you
cannot come to Christ; John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the
Father who sent Me draws him Only sinners can be called/saved. The
teaching that somehow you must stop sinning before you can be saved
is wrong. To stop sinning or turn from your sin is a result of
salvation, not a prerequisite. The only prerequisite is to be a
called sinner. 26. Mark 2:17, Sinners Psalm 51:13, 1:1, How blessed
is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor
stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
Jesus is paraphrasing Hosea 6:6 in, Matthew 9:13 "But go and learn
what this means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,' for I
did not come to call the righteous, but sinners. "There are only
two kinds of men: the righteous, who believe themselves sinners;
the rest, sinners who believe themselves righteous" --Blaise Pascal
(16231662) 27. Mark 2:17, Jesus Came To Save Sinners 1 Timothy 1:15
It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am
foremost of all. Luke 19:10 "For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save that which was lost. Matthew 9:13 "But go and learn
what this means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,' for I
did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." 28. Lets read
Mark 2:18-20, We Await Him! Not many people mourn at a wedding
feast Its normal for us to mourn when we study the crucifixion And
rejoice at Easter, and the resurrection Romans 8:25with
perseverance we wait eagerly 1 Corinthians 1:7awaiting eagerly the
revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, Philippians 3:20 we eagerly
wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; Hebrews 9:28 so Christ
also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will
appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to
those who eagerly await Him. 29. Lets read Mark 2:21-28 30. Mark
2:21, 2 Examples, Same Message Mark 2:21 "No one sews a patch of
unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away
from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. Mark 2:22
"No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will
burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but
one puts new wine into fresh wineskins. Who or what is He talking
about? Mark 2:16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw Then Jesus
brought up the crucifixion. Religious legalistic Judaism is the
un-stretchable cloth and old wineskin. 31. Mark 2:22, Wine Matthew
9:17 "Nor do people put new wine [oinos] into old wineskins;
otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine [oinos] pours out and
the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine [oinos] into fresh
wineskins, and both are preserved. oinos Meaning: wine Origin: a
prim. word Usage: wine(33), wine*(1). [oinos] used 4Xs in Mark
2:22, 3Xs in Luke 5:37-38 Luke 7:33 "For John the Baptist has come
eating no bread and drinking no wine [oinos] , and you say, 'He has
a demon! 34 "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you
say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax
collectors and sinners! [oinos] used 5Xs in John 2:3-10 the mother
of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine [oinos] ." you have kept
the good wine [oinos] until now. 32. Mark 2:22, Wine Romans 14:21
It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine [oinos] , or to do
anything by which your brother stumbles. Ephesians 5:18 And do not
get drunk with wine [oinos] , for that is dissipation, but be
filled with the Spirit, 1 Timothy 3:3 not addicted to wine
[paroinos] or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love
of money. paroinos Meaning: given to wine, drunken Origin: from
3844 and 3631 Usage: addicted to wine(2). 1 Timothy 3:8 Deacons
likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to
much wine [oinos] or fond of sordid gain, 33. Mark 2:22, Wine 1
Timothy 5:23 No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little
wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
[oinos] 34. Mark 2:23, Sabbath Breaker? Mark 2:23 And it happened
that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His
disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of
grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why are they
doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" Deuteronomy 23:25 "When
you enter your neighbor's standing grain, then you may pluck the
heads with your hand, but you shall not wield a sickle in your
neighbor's standing grain. 35. Mark 2:24, Not Lawful On The
Sabbath?" Mark 2:24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why
are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? It was lawful
according to Moses. It was not lawful according to their
traditions. 36. Mark 2:24-3:4, Work On The Sabbath The Pharisees
were splitting hairs over what was considered work on the Sabbath.
For example, one could swallow vinegar for a sore throat on the
Sabbath but could not gargle with it, for that would be work; and a
woman should not look in a mirror on the Sabbath because she might
see a gray hair and pluck it outthat would also be work. - John
Commentary, pg 27 - Chester McCalley Exodus 31:15 'For six days
work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of
complete rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the
sabbath day shall surely be put to death. 37. Mark 2:25, The
Consecrated Bread Mark 2:25 And He said to them, "Have you never
read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions
became hungry; 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of
Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is
not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave
it to those who were with him? 1 Samuel 21:1-9 Jesus didnt plead
innocence because of Deuteronomy 23:25, that would only have only
taught about eating, instead, He goes to the root of the problem,
their legalism about the law, distorts the intent of the law. The
law was to bless the people, not hurt them. It had a provision for
the hungry, and destitute. 38. Mark 2:27 Mark 2:27 Jesus said to
them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
39. Ezekiel 20:12 "Also I gave them My sabbaths to be a sign
between Me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD who
sanctifies them. 40. Mark 2:28, Sabbath Mark 2:28 "So the Son of
Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." The captain of the LORD'S host
commanded 7 times as much work to be done on the Sabbath. Joshua
6:4 "Also seven priests shall carry seven trumpets of rams' horns
before the ark; then on the seventh day you shall march around the
city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. Who is
this guy Matthew 12:8 "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
41. Mark 2:28 Sabbath A world without a Sabbath would be like a man
without a smile, like a summer without flowers, and like a
homestead without a garden. It is the most joyous day of the whole
week. Henry Ward Beecher 42. THE END American bison charge through
