2010-11 MARIST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES (2011 SPARK ENERGY MAAC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP) 6
GIORGIS GETS 200• Head Coach Brian Giorgis became the first women’s basketball coach to win 200 games as the Marist
head coach on Saturday, Dec. 11, when the Red Foxes defeated Boston University 71-55 at the Mc-Cann Center.
• Giorgis became just the second head coach in Marist basketball history to win 200 games at Marist, as Dave Magarity reached the milestone with the men’s program during the 2000-2001 season. Magarity used 402 games at Marist to eclipse the mark, while Giorgis accomplished the feat in just 264 games.
• Entering the season with a mark of 194-62, he ranked 11th among active coaches with a winning percentage of .758.
THE NEWEST ADDITION - NINA TRIPLO• On April 25, 2010, Nina Triplo became the newest member of the Marist women’s basketball team
through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The Red Foxes welcomed Nina Triplo to the family at Marist’s Historic Cornell Boathouse with an adoption ceremony. Members of the foundation were on hand including the founder Denis Murphy.
• Nina was born on Aug. 5, 1998 and resides in Stone Ridge, N.Y. with her parents Gina and Joseph. In 2007, Nina was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma, a form of benign brain tumor. On Saturday, Dec. 11, Nina received her official team jersey in a special pregame ceremony.
FREQUENT FLYERS• During the first 12 games of the 2010-11 schedule, all non-conference games, the Marist women’s
basketball team logged over 13,300 miles of travel.• The Red Foxes opened the season with five consecutive away games at Kansas State, Vermont and
Villanova. • After its home opener against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 4, Marist made its shortest road trip of the non-
conference season to Hartford.• On Dec. 18-20 Marist flew to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Duel in the Desert tournament.
RACHELE FITZ JERSEY RETIREMENT• Fitz became the first women’s basketball player in school history to have her jersey retired on Feb. 18.
She will join men’s basketball stars Drafton Davis, Steve Smith and Rik Smits as the only four players in school history to have their jerseys retired.
• Fitz stands atop the career record book in eight statistical categories - games played (137), points (2,447), scoring average (17.9), field goals made (905), field goal percentage (.582), free throws made (663), free throw percentage (.847) and rebounds (1,066).
• She helped the program win four MAAC Championships and appear in four NCAA Tournaments from 2006-10. Additionally, the Red Foxes won three NCAA Tournament games in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Marist was the first MAAC team to advance to the Sweet 16, men’s or women’s, in 2006-07.
THE FOUR LEADERS• Of the 10 players that return to the Red Foxes this season, Marist head coach Brian Giorgis has named
four captains this season - seniors Erica Allenspach, Elise Caron and Maria Laterza and junior Corielle Yarde.
• A pre-season and post-season First Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) choice during her junior season, Allenspach was thrust into a starting role in just her 13th collegiate game, and has started all 115 games she has played in since. The stretch began on Dec. 22, 2007 at Albany. Allens-pach was a two-time MAAC All-Tournament team choice in 2009 and 2010. Away from the MAAC, Allenspach has also been honored by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association as a Second Team choice in 2010.
• Yarde posted new career highs in 11 statistical categories during her breakout sophomore season, including a double-double at Boston University behind 32 points and 13 rebounds on Dec. 12. She was named Second Team All-MAAC at the end of the season, after she was named MAAC Player of the Week twice in five weeks from Dec. 14-Jan. 11. Yarde was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team.
• Caron also returns to the Marist backcourt after she appeared in all 34 games as a junior. A MAAC All-Academic Team choice in 2009-10, Caron has been known for her defensive commitment and intensity as she has accumulated 90 career steals.
• The most experienced member of the post players is Laterza who is back for her senior season. She started two games as a junior against West Virginia and Oklahoma State in the first four games of the 2009-10 campaign.

HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGISNINTH SEASON
SUNY CORTLAND, 1977CAREER RECORD: 223-64
FIVE-TIME MAAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Brian Giorgis is in his ninth season as head coach of the Marist women’s basketball team, and is the program’s all-time leader in wins. His career record stands at 194-62 and his .758 winning percentage is 10th best among active Division I coaches. In his first eight seasons in Poughkeepsie, Giorgis has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times - twice outright (2003-04, 2007-08), and a share of the award on two other occasions (2004-05, 2005-06).
Giorgis, a 2010 inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, had led the program to national prominence in his first eight seasons. Last season, the Red Foxes reached their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament and their sixth in seven years. Marist also won its seventh consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title with a 15-3 mark in the MAAC, and finished two games ahead of the second-place team, Iona.
Beyond his success on the floor, Giorgis has also led his program to participate in a number of initiatives within the basketball and local com-munities. Since taking over the program in 2002-03, the Red Foxes have helped to raise funds for a number of different causes. The team has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Kids’ Day Out, a one-day clinic sponsored by to benefit students with disabilities. Additionally, the Red Foxes have worked with the WBCA in its efforts to promote breast cancer awareness with an annual “Pink Zone” contest. The women’s basketball program also works with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which attempts to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. The Red Foxes adopted Nina Triplo in April 2010.
The Red Foxes went 29-4 in 2008-09 with a 16-2 mark in conference. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 that season as well, and was ranked for three weeks. For his efforts, Giorgis was named the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
In 2007-08, the Red Foxes set a new program record with 32 wins. Marist posted an 18-0 record in the MAAC, the first team to do so since the conference expanded to 10 teams, and won its fifth consecutive regular season title. The Red Foxes also earned their first in-season ranking in 2007-08 when the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll ranked them 25th on Feb. 12. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the poll by the end of the regular season. A record 21-game winning streak propelled Marist to its fourth MAAC Tournament title and a seventh-seed in the New Orleans Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Marist won its first round NCAA Tournament game for the second straight season, using a 39-7 run over the last 14:13 of the game to defeat 10th-seeded DePaul 76-57. The Red Foxes took a 22-game winning streak, the nation’s longest at the time, into their second round game against LSU. While Marist did fall to the Tigers, the Red Foxes showed they can hang with the nation’s elite teams for a second straight season. Giorgis earned two accolades for his work during the 2007-08 season. He was named MAAC Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time in six seasons that he earned at least a share of the award. The Metropoli-tan Basketball Writers Association also honored Giorgis by naming him and C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers the Maggie Dixon Co-Coaches of the Year.
Giorgis and the Red Foxes enjoyed an historic season and its third trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. He led the Red Foxes to their first ever win in the NCAA Tournament, a 67-63 upset of fourth-seeded Ohio State. Marist followed it up with a 73-59 win over Middle Tennessee State to advance to the Sweet 16. The win over MTSU marked the first time a MAAC program, men’s or womens’, reached the Sweet 16 in conference history. Marist’s Cinderella run on the national stage came to a close when it met eventual national cham-pion Tennessee in the Sweet 16. The Red Foxes won 29 games during the season, and embarked on winning streaks of seven and 13 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the fourth straight season.

2010-11 MARIST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES (2011 SPARK ENERGY MAAC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP) 16
In 2005-06, Giorgis led Marist to a then program-best 23 triumphs and its second trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes embarked on win-ning streaks of seven and 12 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the third straight season.
In 2004-05, Giorgis guided Marist to a 22-win season, which included a then program-record 16-game winning streak. After starting the MAAC season 0-3, the Red Foxes closed it with 15 consecutive triumphs to earn the top seed in the MAAC Tournament for the first time.
The 2003-04 season was historical, as it was the first time the Red Foxes earned a berth in the NCAA tournament in what became known as a “season of firsts.” Additionally, Marist earned its first share of a MAAC regular-season title and compiled its first winning record in 11 years.
Giorgis’ first campaign laid the foundation for future success. Taking over a team in 2002-03 which had lost the fourth- and fifth-leading scorers in program history to graduation the prior year, Giorgis’ team improved its win total from 11 to 13. The Red Foxes also earned their first win in a MAAC Tournament game in school history with a first-round triumph over Loyola.
Prior to his arrival at Marist, Giorgis enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. In his final season there, the girls basketball team finished with a fourth-place national ranking in the USA Today poll and earned its fourth straight New York State Federation Championship. He earned WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors, was runner-up for WBCA National Coach of the Year honors and was selected to coach at the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game.
As the head girls basketball coach at Lourdes, Giorgis posted an astounding record of 451-44 in his 19 seasons, good for a winning percentage of .911. He won nine state championships with the Warriors. In his last two years, his teams posted a combined mark of 56-2 and earned the top ranking in the Madison Square Garden Tri-State Area Poll each year. Giorgis has earned two WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors and two coach of the year awards from the New York State Coaches Association. He led Lourdes to the league title all 19 of his seasons there and won 15 Section I crowns, with the last 11 coming consecutively.
Giorgis’ achievements at Lourdes were not limited to the basketball court. He is the only coach in state history to take four teams to the state Final Four in his career, as he also guided the baseball, softball and volleyball teams there. His softball squad captured the state crown in 1990. Ad-ditionally, Giorgis coached golf and tennis at Lourdes and served as athletic director for 10 years. He served two stints as president of the Section One Girls Basketball Coaches Association.
Giorgis earned a bachelor’s degree in health education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1977, and earned a master’s in health education from Virginia Tech University in 1982.
