YEARS 7 TO 13 MARIST COLLEGE Catholic School for Girls Term 4 - Number 3 Friday 30th October, 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Guardians, Last Friday we gathered as a school community to celebrate our last House Mass of the year. Colin House Leaders Shona Gomes, Grace Tuinukuafe and Cherry Kura led this very special liturgy. The focus of our Mass was the spiritual legacy left behind by Jean Claude Colin. Just as Colin used the gifts that God gave him, we are also called to do the same. It was not always easy for him, and like Colin, sometimes we too have to stretch ourselves to accept who we are, recognise our talents and work towards the continuing his legacy. Jean Claude Colin was a man of great faith and from a very young age he showed a great love for Mary and often spent time praying to her for guidance. Colin understood the needs of his time and engaged wholeheartedly in the mission of the society. He was always grateful for what he had and shared his gifts and talents willingly. Since our Marist spirituality draws from his spiritual legacy, we too need to open our hearts to God and Mary, be thankful for our lives and continue Colins work towards building Gods kingdom here on earth. The homily explained the values that were dear to the heart of Father Colin and his mission. Father Colin was cleverly portrayed by Father Kevin and assisted by two angels Georgia and Jessica. MARIST COLLEGE

Catholic School for Girls Term 4 - Number 3

Friday 30th October, 2015

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last Friday we gathered as a school community to celebrate our last House Mass of the year. Colin House Leaders Shona Gomes, Grace Tu’inukuafe and Cherry Kura led this very special liturgy.

The focus of our Mass was ‘the spiritual legacy left behind by Jean Claude Colin.

Since our Marist spirituality draws from his spiritual legacy, we too need to open our hearts to God and Mary, be thankful for our lives and continue Colin’s work towards building God’s kingdom here on earth.’

The homily explained the values that were dear to the heart of Father Colin and his mission. Father Colin was cleverly portrayed by Father Kevin and assisted by two angels Georgia and Jessica.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

At Marist College we are proud of our Social Justice work. Our girls work hard to support those in need and give generously of their time and effort. Here is a snapshot of our final projects for the year.

Adopt a “Grandfather” is the Bishop’s initiative. This is what he has to say - “St John Vianney House is a home for retired priests - the priests that married your parents, baptised and confirmed you and celebrated Mass with you. They need your fundraising skills to build 7 new units at St John Vianney House. Will you help? Adopt a priest today as your ‘grandfather’ and make sure he has a roof over his head and some creature comforts when he retires.”

The Catholic Caring Foundation. This foundation cares for local families and communities with financial assistance as well as mentoring and moral support. This year we will fundraise for both these organisations through our Mufti Day and sausage sizzle.

Lastly, the Monte Cecilia Housing Trust. Our students donate Christmas presents to help those families in need enjoy a special Christmas.

Thank you to everyone that continues to support our social justice team.

E-LEARNING STRATEGIC PLANNING

We are currently updating our strategic planning for e-learning at Marist College. E-learning includes the use of digital devices for learning, administration and parent communication, as well as online safety and digital citizenship.

As part of this process we’d like to hear what parents and students have to say, and for this reason we have created a short survey. You can find the link to the E-Learning Planning Framework (ELPF) survey on the school website at www.maristcollege.school.nz.

FUTURE FASHION DESIGNER

Caryl Naron has long been interested in fashion design. A keen Y12 Fabric Technology and Art Design student, she took her aspirations to the next level this year by undertaking a Gateway programme. She achieved 20 credits in relevant unit standards by completing a unit in ‘properties and care of different fabrics’ by distance learning, plus further units in ‘garment construction’ using industrial machines at a private training institute during school holidays. Caryl gained real industry work experience behind the scenes at Trelise Cooper’s Newmarket workshop, and also worked in Smith and Caughey’s fashion department, developing her knowledge of designer labels and her understanding of the needs and desires of fashion consumers. In addition she gained a First Aid certificate and health and safety credits, useful in any workplace. Congratulations Caryl, you are well on your way to a fashion career!

2016 YOUTH PARLIAMENT REPRESENTATIVE

Every three to four years the Ministry of Youth Development holds a youth version of Parliament. Youth Parliament 2016 marks it's 20th anniversary. I applied for the position as the representative Youth MP for Jan Logie of the Green Party who is the Spokesperson for Social Development, Voluntary Sector and Rainbow Issues and is part of the Porirua electorate. I was very pleased to be chosen.

At Marist I am very committed to the Social action side of the extra-circulars. I am one of the Amnesty Leader's and a devoted member of the Vinnies. I am a big believer that if you want something to change you have to actually do something about it. This is a very important idea to believe in when it comes to being a Spokesperson for Social development and Voluntary sector. But overall I applied for this role because I have future aspirations to become a Politician after doing university and humanitarian work and be a part of social development in our country.

Earlier this October I received the news that I was chosen out of many applicants to be a part of the 2016 Youth MP Parliament representing Jan Logie and the Green Party. Taking on this role I will sit on special committees and attend meetings, seek out the views of the youth from my community on various issues and will fly down to Parliament in Wellington for the 2 day Youth Parliament. I look forward to holding my tenure commencing in late January 2016.

PERFORMING ARTS AWARDS EVENING

Performing Arts and Cultural Leaders, Mirabai Pease and Theresa Toleafoa, warmly welcomed people to the celebration of leadership and distinction in the Performing Arts at Marist. Extra-curricular activities acknowledged were the Family Festival, the Australian music trip, Stage Challenge, and Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand regional and national festivals. Our new Arts Coordinator, Mrs Ella Bold, was also acknowledged for her generous help.

Other 2015 initiatives were mentioned, such as the Year 7/8 Marybelles choir in Kid’s Sing, the Gospel Choir with St Pauls’ students, and the Shakespeare Club, led by Mirabai Pease and Hannah Brown. These Year 13 students also shared the Performing Arts Cup, mainly for the honour of being selected to perform at the Globe Theatre London with the Young Shakespeare Company 2016. The Shakespeare theme was reflected in the encouraging words of our guest speaker, Rita Stone, who is the Artistic Director of Auckland Young Shakespeare Company.

A special appreciation to Rebar Catering for the delicious snacks at the start of the event. The final thank you must go to all the parents in our Marist community for their ongoing support of their daughters’ achievements in the Performing Arts.
