3.3.3 Summary of taxa identified
3.3.3.1 Algae
Twenty-two algal specimens were examined, with nineteen specimens identified to species level and three
specimens noted as animals (likely hydroids). Thirteen algal species were recorded from the B1 specimens.
This included Caulerpa racemosa var. lamourouxii, is a native variant of the target species Caulerpa racemosa.
3.3.3.2 Ascidiacea
Eighteen species were identified from 27 specimens. These identifications included B. leachi, B. schlosseri,
and Didemnum spp. (Didemnum cf. granulatum and Didemnum sp.) which were included in the B1 target
species list. Four remaining specimens included three sponges and an indeterminate ascidian specimen
(and empty transparent test).
3.3.3.3 Bryozoa
Two bryozoan specimens were identified by Dr Denis Gordan, but were not species on the target list. Dr Rad
Nair identified five bryozoan species from eight specimens, which included the target species Bugula
neritina.
3.3.3.4 Crustacea
Eighty-three barnacle samples, most containing multiple specimens, were initially screened in the Cardno
laboratory, with four questionable samples sent on to MITS for a second opinion on the identification. Cardno
provisionally identified the following taxa:
> Tetraclita/Elminius sp;
> Megabalanus tintinnabulum;
> M. rosa;
> Amphibalanus reticulatus; and
> A. amphitrite.
Marine Pest Monitoring Program Baseline Survey 1 Report Ichthys Nearshore Environmental Monitoring Program
Prepared for INPEX Cardno Page 19
The M. rosa samples sent for secondary examination were identified as Striatobalanus amaryllis which is not
a target species. This group of ‘pink’ barnacles display similar characteristics that are regarded as very
difficult to identify and are the subject of taxonomic revision (Wells et al. 2009).
A. amphitrite specimens sent for secondary examination included the taxa Amphibalanus reticulatus and
Solidobalanus sp. (but could not be identified further as the shells were empty). A. reticulatus and
Solidobalanus sp. are not target species or genera; however, A. amphitrite is listed as a target species.
Native crabs were also identified, including Xanthidae (six specimens), Portunidae (one specimen),
Porcellenidae (five specimens), Ocypodidae (two specimens) and Grapsidae (eight specimens). No species
from the target list were identified.
3.3.3.5 Dinoflagellate samples
Five dinoflagellates were identified but none were the target species. In addition, 15 other taxa were
identified including diatoms.
3.3.3.6 Fish
Four fish specimens were identified but none of these were from the target list.
3.3.3.7 Mollusca
Ninety mollusc specimens were examined by MAGNT, with 42 species identified. Species identified were
native to the NT. The highest proportion of these specimens was bivalves with some gastropods (snails).
One specimen was discarded as an unidentifiable individual.
3.3.3.8 Polychaeta
Twenty six polychaete specimens were assessed. Ten native species were identified (from 12 specimens),
while ten specimens were too poorly preserved, had no head or were empty tubes that could not be
identified further than family level. One specimen was a peanut worm (Sipuncula) and three specimens were
mangrove ‘worms’ that were actually molluscs.
3.4 Results of Additional Data Collection
The results of the inspection of photographs from Seagrass, Coral, Subtidal Benthos (Epifauna) and
Research Angling monitoring programs are presented in Appendix D and summarised in Table 3-4.
No marine pests were verified on the basis of inspection of photographs. The provisional identification of the
target species of green alga C. racemosa could not be confirmed because microscopic inspection of this
species is necessary to distinguish it from the native variant Caulerpa racemosa var. lamourouxii, and divers
could not safely dive in locations where it was identified in photographs. Collections of this alga from coral
transects will be attempted at the next, earliest opportunity and reported on following the first during-dredging
marine pest survey.

Table 3-4 Summary of inspections of photographs for marine pests
No pest crab species were caught at the Research Angling locations Bynoe Harbour and Adelaide River.
* Indicates an outcome requiring further verification. Divers for the Coral Monitoring Program were provided with the location of potential
pests prior to the October 2012 routine survey and requested to collect physical specimens for further verification. Divers could not
access South Shell Island and Wickham Point could due to dredge activities. Mandorah is a contingency coral monitoring site and
therefore was not scheduled to be visited as part of the bi-monthly routine monitoring done in October 2012; it was not surveyed for
pests in October due to time constraints.

4 Discussion
B1 was carried out in August 2012 and inspected 25 locations throughout Darwin Harbour. Two hundred and
thirty two samples were retained for examination by specialist taxonomists. Samples were retained for further
examination where a specimen was sufficiently similar to a target pest species or when examination of
microscopic or internal features was required to confidently identify the specimen. The specimens retained
included barnacles, crabs, ascidians, bryozoans, molluscs, polychaetes and fish, as well as dinoflagellate
core samples. Five target taxa were collected during B1, including one bryozoan, three ascidians and one
barnacle.
B. neritina is one of the most abundant bryozoans in ports and harbours as a member of the fouling
community (NIMPIS 2012a). It grows well on pier piles, vessel hulls, buoys and similar submerged surfaces
and in ships’ intake pipes and condenser chambers. The Aquatic Biosecurity unit of NT Fisheries regularly
monitors biofouling communities in Darwin Harbour and its marinas using settlement collectors. They
reported B. neritina from Frances Bay Mooring Basin, and Cullen Bay and Bayview Marinas in October 2007
(Cribb et al. 2008). The biosecurity threat of this bryozoan is considered to be low given that this species is
relatively well-spread internationally and has been recorded from Darwin Harbour previously without
extensive populations being reported in regular monitoring since 2008 (Maher et al. 2011a, b).
B. schlosseri and B. leachi are colonial ascidians that are widespread throughout Australia’s coastline. They
can overgrow other fouling organisms and can alter community dynamics on a range of substrates (NIMPIS
2012b, 2012c). These ascidians were not collected from locations directly associated with the Project but
were collected from sites nearby at Channel Island and East Arm Wharf.
The other target ascidians recorded during B1 were Didemnum spp. This genus can be cryptogenic and it is
Didemnum vexillum that is a well-known marine pest in the Australasian region (NIMPIS 2012d). D. vexillum
tends to be found as a thin rope-like form or as a thick encrusting mat in areas with rough conditions
(NIMPIS 2012d). The Didemnum spp specimens were not collected from locations directly associated with
the Project but were collected from sites nearby at Channel Island and East Arm mooring and Fort Hill
Wharf. None of these ascidian species have been detected in marine pest monitoring from 2007 or onwards
(Cribb et al. 2008; Maher et al. 2001a, b). Golder suggests that a record of the extent of the populations be
made if further specimens are observed in subsequent monitoring surveys to help assess whether this
species is displaying pest characteristics in the Darwin Harbour environment.
The barnacle A. amphitrite has been recorded in Darwin Harbour during regular monitoring since October
2007 from Bayview Marina, Cullen Bay Marina and pontoon, Frances Bay Mooring Basin, Tipperary Waters
Marina, Stokes Hill Wharf and HMAS Coonawarra (Cribb et al. 2008; Maher et al. 2011a, b). It is a species
which is widely distributed as it is often transferred on ship hulls (Stafford and Willan 2007). Given the
already widespread nature of this barnacle, it is considered unlikely that the Project activities would have a
significant effect on the spread of the species throughout Darwin Harbour.
Mussels were found on the hull of a vessel berthed at HMAS Coonawarra (Australian Defence Force, August
2012 to INPEX, August 2012, pers. comm.) and verified as Asian Green mussel (Perna viridis) by Dr Richard
Willan of MAGNT. The mussel was collected in the days prior to the scheduled inspection of the navy basin
that was undertaken as part of B1. No Asian green mussels were found at HMAS Coonawarra or at other
sites in Darwin Harbour during B1.
A number of target species were recorded during B1, including a barnacle, ascidians and a bryozoan. These
taxa are currently considered to have a relatively low level of biosecurity risk, based either on their
cosmopolitan distribution or the lack of extensive populations currently present at Darwin Harbour sites.
Golder suggests that a record of the extent of the populations be made if further specimens are observed in
subsequent monitoring surveys to help assess whether this species is displaying pest characteristics in the
Darwin Harbour environment.
In regard to A. amphitrite, it is suggested that this species be removed from the target species list for the
Marine Pest Monitoring Program. This species is known to be widely distributed around Darwin Harbour and
it is considered unlikely that the Project activities would have a significant effect on the spread of the species.

In regard to the long-term Marine Pest Monitoring Program, it is suggested that the number of sampling
locations and the target species list could be reduced so as to focus effort at a scale appropriate to the
Project activities. Consideration could be given to removing locations which are considered to pose a low-
biosecurity risk in terms of Project activities or non-Project related vessel movement in Darwin Harbour.
