MARINA COASTAL EXPRESSWAY ISSUE 4 (September 2010) COMPLETION OF STAGE 1 TEMPORARY EARTH RETAINING STRUCTURE IN THE SEA A 420m section of the 5km long Marina Coastal Expressway will be constructed underneath the sea bed of the Marina Channel. This section will be constructed in 2 stages. The temporary earth retaining structure, commonly known as “cofferdam” for Stage 1 undersea construction work was completed in December 2009. The cofferdam helps to prevent the entry of seawater into the work site and provides a dry area for the execution of ground improvement, foundation, excavation and tunnel structure works. The cofferdam comprises two rows of tubular pipe piles which were installed into the good earth to provide a robust temporary structure for safe excavation. Steel beams and decks were placed on top of the tubular pipe piles to provide a working platform for the construction machinery. Machinery on the decking supported by the steel pipe piles The main excavation work for the tunnel commenced in the first quarter of 2010 from the land side at Marina East and is expected to complete by end 2010 Aerial view of Marina Channel after stage 1 cofferdam construction

MARINA COASTAL EXPRESSWAYISSUE 4 (September 2010)
COMPLETION OF STAGE 1 TEMPORARY EARTH RETAINING STRUCTURE IN THE SEAA 420m section of the 5km long Marina Coastal Expressway will be constructed underneath the sea bed of the Marina Channel.
The cofferdam comprises two rows of tubular pipe piles which were installed into the good earth to provide a robust temporary
structure for safe excavation.
Steel beams and decks were placed on top of the tubular pipe piles to provide a working platform for the construction machinery.

REMOVAL OF BURIED SEAWALL
Land reclamation work was carried out in different phases in the 1970s and 1980s at Marina East and Marina South. A stretch of old seawall was left behind and buried 12m underground when reclamation was carried out. This posed a challenge to the construction of the Marina CoastalExpressway(MCE)aspartofitliesacrossasectionof the MCE tunnel.

The Sequence of Work Using “Oscillator” & Hammer Grab
Placing of casing into the “Oscillator”
2 Connecting of casing for further jacking into the ground
3 Grabbing out of soil/rock (oldseawa ll)withincasingusing the Hammer Grab
After careful evaluation, the contractor adopted the “Oscillator” and Hammer Grab(asshownbelow)togetherwithopen excavation to remove the seawall at critical areas such as the location of the temporary earth retaining structure for tunnel works. The remaining areas will be removed during the excavation stage of the MCE tunnel.

PIPE PILE FABRICATIONPipe piles are the main component of the temporary earth retaining structure for the construction of the Marina Coastal Expressway. The piles are fabricated from steel coils in the factory and delivered to site for installation.
The exact date for the road diversions will be announced in the LTA website @ http://www.lta.gov.sg. Prominent signages will be displayed in advance to inform and guide motorists. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and slowly along the diverted roads.

LAND RECLAMATION AND NEW SEAWALL CONSTRUCTION @ MARINA WHARF滨 海 码 头 - 填 海 与 新 海 堤 的 建 造 工 作

The future seawall of this reclaimed land is made up of sections of steel pipe piles which are driven into the sea bed using the Giken Silent Piler which produces less noise and vibration disturbances when operating.
The various sections of steel pipe piles are interlocked together to form a structural box system to resist the lateral earth pressure arising from the retained sand fill which forms the future land.
The pipe pile installation work has been in progress since 2009 and is targeted to complete by 1st Quarter 2011.钢 管 桩 的 装 置 工 作 从 2009 年 开 始 进 行, 并 将 在 2011 年 第 一 季 完 工。
