THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MARIETTA HIGH SCHOOL’S THEATRE

DEPARTMENT’S PRODUCTION OF...

“In The Heights” Dear Potential Cast Member,

We are pleased to announce auditions for Department’s production of In The Heights! Please read these pages very carefully so that you have all of the information regarding auditions, rehearsals and the show. There are important audition tips here on this page, so read and take note before your audition!

You must be passing all classes in Aspen at the time of auditions to audition!! “In the Heights” is an extremely character-driven show; Don’t be afraid to throw all your energy into your audition, you can’t go too far! Many voices and movements are necessary for the creative team to make casting and callback decisions, so make sure you commit to everything you do during your audition!

During your audition, please do not dress up like a character. If you do, you’re telling the creative team who you think you should be. Dress to help you feel the part you’re auditioning for, wear shoes similar to a character so your posture is similar, wear a dress if the character wears a dress, dress IN THE STYLE of a character or the show, but by wearing a costume, you’re removing the artistic team’s creativity of seeing you in other roles you may not have seen for yourself.

When you’re singing, whether it be for your initial audition or for callbacks, the most important thing to keep in mind is that acting and intentions are everything. There is a reason you don’t see pop stars winning Tony Awards on Broadway, it’s not about how you sound, it’s about why you’re singing, what you’re singing for and what you’re trying to accomplish through the music. This entire show is character driven and can only be believable because of the actor’s heightened emotion. Whether it be good or bad, the actor must reach a point where speaking dialogue is no longer an option, the only thing they can do is sing. Keep that in mind when you’re preparing for auditions or callbacks. This is one of the most common mistakes in theatre, even with professional actors at the highest levels!

In an effort to increase participation and limit potential conflicts, we are reducing the amount of rehearsal days for this production. Later in this packet, you’ll find a calendar detailing rehearsal times; this show’s performance dates are January 26th – Feb. 3rd on Fridays and Saturday only. Detailed rehearsal schedules are further in the packet.

Majority of rehearsals take place in the black box at Marietta High School and at Ms. Motschman’s (Vocal Director’s) house so please make sure you can commit to the rehearsal dates. If cast you will be given the specific address to Ms. Motschman’s house but I realize you may want to know how far away it is to plan accordingly. The location is on Park Creek Court in Marietta GA. 30064. It is very close to the high school. Please be aware of your commitment level when cast in this show; When one cast member is missing from rehearsal it affects the others in the show, the productivity of rehearsals and ultimately, the final product! Conflicts are a huge part when considering roles for cast members. So please be vigilant in planning for rehearsals. There will be understudies assigned to the principle roles but there will not be an understudy show. If you are cast as an understudy; you recognize that you are taking a chance in not performing in the role.

Make sure you take note of everything in this packet, as it will help to answer any questions you may have. I am so excited to be given the opportunity to help bring this amazing show to life here at Blue Devil Nation! Our entire production team is committed to making it an experience that volunteers and audiences won’t soon forget! This show is going to be muy caliente!!!

Spanish Poem Memorize and Perform on Vocal Auditions. Be prepared to know what its about.

España: He cerrado mi balcón Federico Garcia Lorca
