Contrary to popular belief, a PhD is not intellectually difficult but it calls for discipline and stamina.
Unstructured PhD Programmes
Unstructured PhD programme – a doctorate in Europe traditionallyinvolved a one-on-one relationship between the master and the apprentice. „Doktorvater”
Majority of supervisors were primarily task-focused coupled with some concern with the humane aspects of supervision, there was little evidence of
innovation and reflection.
Structured PhD Programmes
• In the US – a norm• In Europe – ?
2007 – 25% of the European institutions had established structured doctoral programmes
2010 – 65% of students have multiple advisors and administrators to guide them, receive formal training and scientific and soft skills – broader education than any single supervisor could provide
