A parent writes

Disorderliness and unruliness areobserved everywhere in our societytoday. People gossip on the road, parktheir vehicles according to their whimsand fancies, show physical might, scramble and meddle in shops andmarkets, oblivious to inconveniencesof law abiding citizens of the society. Some irritated people comment thatthis behavior is the result of lack ofproper teaching in educationalinstitutions or because ofinappropriate nurturing in the families. Now a question arises, whether theteachers are responsible or theparents are accountable for theseunruly activities.

People often say, “He is aneducated man, but his behavior is notup to the mark”. In common concept,if a man attains a certain qualificationhe is considered as educated. But ifthat man displays some indecentbehavior, will it be justified to adorn

him as an educated person? On theother hand, we might find an illiterateman living in a remote village adornedwith generosity and hospitality. Thenwill it be reasonable to rationalizethose people in the villages asuneducated?

To my understanding the word‘Education’ has a wide significance.Attaining a certificate of qualificationfrom educational institutions is notsufficient enough to affirm one to bean educated person. It needs more.If a person possesses a good culturein addition to his academicqualification, he will be embellishedto be a perfect person. Educationalinstitutions help us to acquireacademic knowledge. If a personobtains some academic degree, heis simply a certificate or degree holder, not educated in the strictest senseof the term, unless he is cultured.

Culture of a person germinates

from his own family and theenvironment in which he belongs. Inthis context I recall a very short storycarrying a large connotation that Icame across during my school days. The story goes like this

There was an old man with adisability of movement. His bodytrembled and whatever he took intohis grip often tumbled down theground and sometimes broke intopieces. Thus, he was served solidfood in wooden dishes on a woodentumbler by his son and daughter-in-law. One day the couple noticed thattheir four-year old son was busycutting wood. Seeing this, the couplequeried their son about his work. Thefour-year old boy replied that he wastrying to manufacture two woodendishes and twotumblers out of wood. The couple again asked the boy aboutthe utility ofthose articles. The boyplacidly answered that he wouldprovide food and drink in thosearticles, when his parents would

“The desire to share one’s innermostself with another”. So to fulfil thisbasic need we must love each other. If not, the problems may arise. Weshould not blame anyone for theproblem in our lives, but ourselves.Let us be honest to ourselves andask, do we really love our fellowbeings? Give unconditional loveregardless of what they do, disapprovetheir bad behaviour, but not them.Parents, teachers, be friendly withyour children, do not try to be theirfriends. When you are wrong admitit, let them learn truthfulness fromyou. Spend quality time with them.Nobility of our character should be

the guiding spirit of our behaviour. Weshould manifest genuine enthusiasmand pride in our calling as parents, teachers. Education must lead us torespect and love others irrespectiveof their religion and economic status.Benjamin Franklin says “when youare good to others you are best toyourself”. We teachers and parentsshould be the living example in frontof our children. We can create apositive atmosphere by taking sounddecisions and by acceptingresponsibilities. A person can changeso many lives by the example of his/her genuine life. Parents andteachers, together we can change thesociety for the betterment, and thenour children surely will live joyfully, peacefully, cheerfully. In my opinion,if possible, never make use of corporalpunishments, sarcasm, and attemptsto humiliate our children. Especially

adolescents are subject to vigorousemotional drives as well as interiorconflicts. We have to form anatmosphere of love, a community oflove. The sorrow of the one must bethe sorrow of all; the joy of one mustbe the joy of all. Then we can seethe qualities like trust, openness, willingness to serve others, courtesyand thoughtfulness in our society.Together we can make wonders, anatmosphere of friendliness and peace. We can have a cheerful, joyful heartwhich God has already planned forus, let us rejoice.

The Mofizuddin Ahmed HazarikaLiterary Fest is a grand four day event, held every year, in the memory ofeminent poet and writer, MofizuddinAhmed Hazarika. A much awaitedevent for the students; the variouscompetitions seek to challenge thestudents’ skill, giving them anopportunity to showcase their talents.

This year, students representingmore than 29 schools in the city

participated in the competitions, whichwere held from the 17th to the 20th ofAugust. These four days were filledwith well fought debates, enthrallingelocutions, creative writing and anexciting quiz!

On the 30th of August, 2015, theMofizuddin Ahmed Hazarika LiteraryAwards ceremony, organised by ourschool, was held at the DistrictLibrary Auditorium.

The programme started with thewelcome address by Mrs MadhabiGoswami, HoD, Assamsesedepartment of our school. The eventwas graced by the presence of DrAmarjyoti Choudhury, Pro ViceChancellor of Tezpur University, theGuest of Honour for the event wasMrs Gauri Basu, the Vice Principalof Loreto House, Kolkata. From this story we can appraisethat family environment andambiance, generates impact in themind of a child. If we see the presentunruliness in the society, in contextof the above story, family milieu maybe one of the root causes. Honestlyspeaking, it is not my idea to insultand taunt the parents of the alreadystained and blemished children. Thematter that has already been occurredcannot be altered and readjusted. But,I am concerned about the futuregenerations. The present state ofaffairs cannot turn worse than that ofthe present.Unless the mind setupand character of a child is patternedin an accurate direction, there is nouse of blaming the educationalinstitutions or the family environmentin designing and redesigning theintellect of a child.

I read an interesting Persianstory of a wise man. His name wasNausaranAdil. ‘Adil’ means wise.

Nausaran was so intelligent andastute that people used ‘Adil’ as histitle. One day a man asked him,“From whom do you learn etiquetteand good behavior?”

NausaranAdil replied, “Fromwicked and evil persons.” The man:“How?”

NausaranAdil: ‘The deeds andactivities which they do, I always stayaway from those.”

Thus, even if there is noenvironment and atmosphere forerudition of good culture either in thefamily or in educational institutions,a child may learn it as NausaranAdildid. To acquire this learning a minuteof surveillance is necessary to seewhether a particular act of a personreally attracts us as satisfactory andacceptable and if our conscienceimmediately negates it, better we

should avoid such type of activity. This way we may be able to improveour nature, temperament andpersonality.

It is possible to keep away fromimproper and intolerable activities if,consistently, we create selfdetermination and perseverance toguide our consciences intelligentlyand it is absolutely possible to createour determination and willpower. Wemust follow the words of famous poetWilliam Ernest Henley, “I am themaster of my fate; I am the captainof my soul.”

The present generation of thechildren, since they are the future oftomorrow, must be aware andconscious to preserve the society inits proper state in order to developour nation in all aspects.

Walking down the main street ofdowntown Dallas, my attention wascaught by a siren coming from behindme. I turned around and saw a policecar approaching. The law enforcersasked me to use the footpath. Withoutany hesitation or protest, I compliedwith.

After taking a few paces, Istopped to look. Huge flocks of menand women with immense enthusiasmand eagerness aligned themselves onthe sides of the road. And the placewas in its true sense bustling withlife. I was surprised but notastonished. Dallas had been a hugevote pot and thus I presumed of the
