MARGINAL CAVE MUSIC
POPULAR MUSIC THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND
Part 1 1968 to 1989
_____________________________________
SONG BACKGROUND:
Song written with music by Michel Legrand and lyrics by Alan and
Marilyn Bergman for the 1968 thriller film "The Thomas Crown
Affair." The first four verses of the second stanza or third stanza
depending on which transcription you see –
Like a tunnel that you follow To a tunnel of its own Down a
hollow to a cavern Where the sun has never shone.
One of the song writers, Alan Bergman recalled – "Michel
[Legrand] played us [i.e. Alan and Marilyn Bergman] seven or eight
melodies. We listened to all of them and decided to wait until the
next day to choose one. We three decided on the same one, a long
baroque melody... The lyric we wrote was stream-of-consciousness.
We felt that the song had to be a mind trip of some
kind" (Bergman n.d.) The song (with the English lyrics) was
introduced in the film The Thomas Crown Affair (1968),
and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in the same
year. At least 59 vocal cover versions were recorded before 2005:
most of which are by male
crooners or female pop divas and some by choral groups. Though
first performed by Noel Harrison in 1968 for the film, “The Thomas
Crown Affair,” it wasn’t until the following year that the song
really became a hit with the Dusty Springfield version. In 1969
eleven other known versions were released, some of which also
became minor hits for Petula Clark and José Feliciano. Since 2000
there has been a huge proliferation of 21 versions, all except two
by women.
This song discography is by no means complete and no attempt
will be made to make it complete. For several cover versions not
mentioned here go to the popflock site.
Several popular easy listening orchestras made numerous
instrumental versions: Michel Legrand (the composer), Ray Conniff,
Percy Faith, André Kostelanetz, Henry Mancini, and Montovani. A few
jazz musicians also improvised on it: George Benson, Dizzy
Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Bud Shank, and Phil Woods. Ref: Bergman

title track sounds just like the kind of thing that you would want
to hear Ed Ames sing. Unfortunately, he sings it rather quickly
here, and Jim Foglesong attempts a bit of psychedelic production
work. It's not bad, but it is definitely one of the weaker tracks
on the album.” (Ezreal 2016) Ref: Ed Ames, Bio, Wikipedia Ed Ames,
