6. Spiral Shelter

Artist: Kashmir Rouw Title: Spiral Shelter Year installed: 2013 Technique/materials: Stone, sand, cement, concrete Footings, F8-4 Trench mesh Funded by: Royalties for Regions Super Town Funding Ownership: Shire of Augusta Margaret River The shelter is modelled on the mirabilis shell spiral used as a template for creating the outer form. This shell-like form also merges with reference to the waves and the ocean. This correlation of waves and the breakdown of shells that formed the limestone have been formed on top of the granite substrate. It is a space for reflection and to develop an emotional connection to the environment and adjoining landscape, highlighting the geomorphological processes that have formed the coastline.

Riflebutts Reserve Park Public Art 9. Rejuvenation Artist: Simon James Title: Rejuvenation Year installed: 2012 Technique/materials: Constructed with 16mm round steel bar, hot forged, welded and finished in a chemically patented zinc finish. Funded by: Bushfire Recovery Working Group Ownership: Shire of Augusta Margaret River “Rejuvenation” is a tribute to the resilience of the community and to the resilience of nature. It is symbolic of the regenerative and healing powers of both. The shell like base reflects our proximity to the ocean, and the uplifting spiritual benefit that its untouched beauty continually brings us. The spiral pattern has long been associated with the cycles of time, the seasons, and the cycles of birth, growth, death and rebirth. Some consider the spiral to be a symbol of our spiritual journey. It is also considered to represent the evolutionary process of learning and growing. The cycles of time are cycles of life.

Riflebutts Amenities Mural Artist: Ian Mutch Title: Sunrise Sunset Year installed: 2013 Technique/materials: Aerosol paint Funded by: Royalties for Regions Super Town Funding Ownership: Shire of Augusta Margaret River From a distance the viewer sees a vibrant, energetic, abstract texture wrapping the wall. Flowing horizontal shapes, layered and organic, span the width of the structure. The design mirrors the rolling hill lines of the region's landscape. As you get closer, the artworks 'texture' reveals itself as a collection of smaller painted illustrations which closely represent the heritage of Riflebutts Reserve. Illustrations and shapes of the surroundings include waves, birds, kangaroos, rabbits, weather, whales, fish, turtles, snakes, river, smoke, native vegetation, leaves and trees. These represent themes of the traditional owners and are natural icons that still exist in the Reserve today.
