A personal call Many of you will know by now that, after seven happy years in Marden, Barbara and I are moving to a new patch of God’s pasture. I have been appointed Vicar of Holwell, Ickleford and Pirton, three rural parishes near the Hertfordshire town of Hitchin. The service of institution and induction there will be on 26
th July, so our last
Sunday in Marden will be 10th July. We will be living in the vicarage in Pirton.
You might wonder why we would want to leave such a lovely place as Marden in the Garden of England? Well, it has not been an easy decision, but we feel ready for fresh challenges, and that Marden is ready to welcome fresh vision from a new vicar. When we look at the history of God’s care for his people in the Bible, we see him calling them to join him on a journey, to get up and go, to spread the Good News. God called Abraham to leave his home for a distant land called Canaan. As for St. Paul – he must have had extra pages added to his passport! So perhaps we should not be surprised to hear God calling us to move to the ‘HIP’ benefice. Could he be using the same opportunity to call Marden Church, and with it the wider community of the parish, to a new spiritual direction and destination? Quite where, he will reveal in his good time. Meanwhile, Barbara and I look forward to enjoying our remaining time in Marden. We will miss Marden and its people, so we ask for your prayers at this time of transition. One way of exploring where the church should be heading is to take some time out together. On Saturday 14
th May you are all invited to take part in our Parish
Conference on ‘Mission-shaped Marden’. The afternoon will begin with a bring-and-share lunch in the Vestry Hall at 12.30pm, followed by presentations and discussion. How can Marden Church be effective followers of Jesus Christ in this place at this time? We may only be able to scratch the surface in one afternoon! Rural traditions are an important part of church and village life. On Sunday 29
th
May at 10.30am we will be marking Rogation time with a visit by Caroline Pinchbeck, our Rural Life Adviser, followed by a gentle afternoon walk to ‘beat the bounds’ (or some of them anyway!) Do come and join in. With every blessing

TRIO – The Responsibility Is Ours
TREE-O Giving for Growing. This is the title of our introductory leaflet on Christian giving. Elsewhere in this magazine I refer to the future vision and mission of Marden Church. Just as a growing tree needs roots firmly established in the soil to draw up life-giving water and nutrients, so the church needs a firm financial base from which to feed new growth. Marden Church needs a real boost in regular income to safeguard its future as an active, growing church. In recent years we have not really been covering costs, let alone giving for growth. Generous donations from the hard-working Friends of Marden’s Heritage are helping us to look after the building, but if you care about what the building stands for, please come along to one of the services on 1
st May (8am or 10.30am) and 8th May (10.30am). There will be a presentation about Christian giving by Liz Mullins, Diocesan Stewardship Adviser. This will be followed by an opportunity to respond in your own time in the three weeks afterwards. I know you will want to respond as generously as you can. There will be a thanksgiving and celebration of God’s generosity on Pentecost Sunday 12
th June at
10.30am. James Robertson
MEN’S BREAKFAST The Men’s Breakfast is open to all men in the village and is a great opportunity to eat the forbidden foods once in awhile. This invitation is for you and the promise is that you will be made very welcome. We meet in the Vestry Hall and sit down to breakfast at 8.30am. The next Men’s Breakfast is on Saturday 7
th May 2011 and
afterwards we will hear from Sandy Elsworth who whilst working in the UK on procurement of water resources spends some of his time in Africa helping communities link their villages to scarce water sources. Please let Graham Westbrook (832758) or Alec Noakes (832211) know you if would like to come simply to ensure there is enough food for everyone.

A PLEA FROM YOUR CHURCH WARDEN Well two little ones please - could all you lovely people who offered to come on to my cleaning rota please give me a ring so that I can arrange a get together with you all. I know who most of you are but there are one or two who said I could put their name down. I had no pencil and paper to hand at the time and I do not want to risk missing you - you are far too precious!! I have come up with an idea on the cleaning front which hopefully means nobody will have to do more than once or twice a month and I would like to run it past you all to see what you think. My number is 01622 831519. I look forward to seeing you all soon. My second ask is really quite simple. To all of you living in Marden for the last 3 years you will probably remember Big Stuart from South Africa who lived with us for 3 months or so. He has recently started a scheme collecting used unwanted reading glasses and hearing aids. His company, Able and Cole the veggie box suppliers, are so impressed that they let him ask their customers to leave these items out with their order, to be collected. He phoned me the other day and asked if anybody in Marden had any of these items, would I be able to collect them for him, so if you have, could you either let me have them or give me a ring and I will collect them from you. I know he would be forever grateful. By the way he sends regards to all the people he got to know during his short time in Marden. God Bless you all, kind regards Di Copas. VILLAGE CAFE 20
TH MAY
If you haven’t found us yet the Village Café is held in the Vestry Hall on a Friday morning 10.30-12.00 where you will find tea, coffee, homemade cakes and a friendly atmosphere. We will be holding another of our fundraising cafes on Friday 20
th May. This time it is for
Christian Aid. As well as our usual refreshments, we will be selling cakes, produce and bric a brac. If you feel you could help out on the day or would like to help at any of our cafes then please give me a call or email. Look forward to seeing you. MARDEN SOCIETY
This talk by Geoff Doel and Mick Lynn could have been titled ‘How to dance and sing and sing all year round’, as they entertained us with their folk calendar accompanied by appropriate musical instruments and singing.
Plough Monday marked the return to work after the first Sunday in January. A plough would be carried around and if you didn’t donate you might have your garden ploughed up! It became connected with the black-faced Molly dancers.
Valentine’s Day represented the start of spring and in the eighteenth century children would go round singing. Probably this Valentine was the Roman Christian martyr. You were also ‘allowed’ to choose a valentine who was not
your husband or wife. It could be the first person you clapped eyes on and Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary that his wife was afraid to come downstairs in case her first sight of another person was a workman. A folk song Dame Durden commemorates this celebration.
“ ‘Twas on the morn of Valentine when birds began to prate, Dame Durden and her maids and men they altogether mate.
And Joe kissed Dolly and Jack kissed Kitty ….”
Next comes Pancake Day heralded by the ringing of the Shrove Bell at mid-morning. Pancakes used fat, butter and eggs – all forbidden during Lent. Pancake races became popular – even held in Maidstone football stadium. There were also marble leagues which cumulated with the finals on Good Friday – God’s Friday. That is the day when fishermen refused to go to sea.
Biddenden Dole is given out on Easter Monday. It originated with a bequest of land, with the income providing bread, cheese and tea for widows. The poor could have the flour and water hard biscuits with the twins imprinted on them. The veracity of the story of the Siamese twins has been questioned and also the date. It is also thought that they could have been just joined at the hip and walked about with their arms around each other for the sake of comfort. (second half next month)
Next meetings are:- Ghosts, Fact or Fiction - Wednesday 28
th April
Canterbury, the hidden city – Wednesday 25th May
8.00 pm in the School Room of the Memorial Hall. Eunice Doswell

Church Flowers
After a couple of years at the helm, Kirsten Gower is stepping down as coordinator of the Church Flowers team. We are grateful to Kirsten for all her hard work, especially for the very successful flower festival last year. Is this a job you could do? You will see from the brief description below that it is quite manageable. You do not even need to be a flower arranger, just a flower arranger’s arranger! 1. Organise annual meeting of the team in February/March each year in the
Vestry Hall 2. Co-ordinate the rota for altar, font and Lady Chapel displays and finalise before
end of March 3. Keep contact details up-to-date for the team of flower arrangers 4. Liaise with Jane Phillips and Judy Noakes regarding weddings 5. Write brief report to Annual Church Meeting in March each year 6. Co-ordinate any special occasional events in the church, such as the flower
festival If you would like to know more, please contact Kirsten on 831573. To volunteer, please contact Judy Noakes at the Church Office 831890.

Marden Primary School As I write, the sun is shining – we are making the most of the outdoors and have finally turned the heating off! Our Year 5 and 6 children have recently returned from the much anticipated Residential Trip to Norfolk. What an amazing week! It was a real pleasure to spend time away from the usual environment with the children – they were wonderful company and a real credit to Marden. So much so, that they received numerous compliments. The aims of the week were to study a different geographical area to our own, to take part in adventurous activities and experience being away from home. One afternoon I found myself hiding from ‘the enemy’ in the woods - we had been given the task of building a hide and 12 of us were squeezed into the result. Needless to say, our hide building skills require some work as we were discovered and drowned by the Instructors with their Supersoaker water pistols!! On another day, we went out on boats to Blakeney Point and watched the seals - the children were enchanted by them. Following this we walked along the beach and ended the day by walking bare foot across the estuary, through the mud flats!! (Some of the children may still be trying to get the mud stains out from under their toe nails). This part of the day was accompanied by many slips, screams and shrieks of laughter - fortunately none of us fell. In contrast we had spent time after lunch lying quietly in the sand dunes – our task was to ‘listen’ but it ended up as a bit of a snooze for some! There were many other highlights too: holding an 8ft snake; swimming; hunting for ‘monsters’ and avoiding another soaking; rock pooling; the disco, and; going to bed really late and waking really early!!!!! We had a wonderful time – Years 3 and 4 are eagerly anticipating their turn and there is no shortage of staff volunteering to go. Not to be left out, the other classes will all be venturing away from Marden on day trips. Our Reception classes are off to Tyland Barn for a ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ day where after listening to and discussing the story, they will go on a minibeast hunt. Years 1 and 2 are today at Chatham Dockyard – this visit links with their water themed topic. Years 3 and 4 are planning a trip to Knole Park, near Sevenoaks, which fits in with their upcoming topic on The Tudors.
We hope you all get the chance to enjoy some days out too!
At Marden Memorial Hall 50p entrance fee. All welcome. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes.

HISTORY GROUP and HERITAGE CENTRE This article is developed from a report on the History Group and its Heritage Centre, delivered to the Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Marden’s Heritage on Wednesday 6
th April by Sir Nick Fenn, who is Patron of the Centre. He
spoke on behalf of David McFarland, Chairman, who was so alarmed at the prospect of meeting The Friends that he escaped to Paris, calling over his shoulder as he fled inviting Nick to represent him. It is based on his brief. THE FUTURE OF OUR PAST A little local history 1998 Members of the Marden Society prepared the Local Authority Village Design Statement. This evolved into the Marden History Group.
2000 They staged an exhibition in the Village Hall on the History of Marden in the context of the Millennium celebrations. They produced the first of 3 videos – on “Village Life at the Turn of the Century”, with funding from the Rural Revival grant.
2002 They issued the first of (now) 21 publications – on “The Fallen of Marden 1914-18”, and the Marden Map with contributions from eighteen Marden artists.
2003 First Oral History Project
2004 The first of two calendars, using images from the Marden Map.
2005 Their “scrubbers” located, cleaned, identified and photographed gravestones inside and outside the Parish Church and developed their “Gravestone Map”.
2006 Relocation became an issue, with the urgent need for a permanent home for the growing Archive, beyond the Chairman’s decaying caravan and stable. A total of £13,500 was raised from Awards for All, the Parish Council, the Borough Council, the Kent County Council, the Allen Grove Fund and others. Agreement was reached to rent a corner of the Village Library from the KCC.
2007 The entire outfit was installed in 8 days to 29th October 2007: multi-media
technology, display cabinets, furniture and carpets, catalogues – all locally sourced.
2008 On 23rd
March the Heritage Centre was formally inaugurated by the redoubtable Ann Widdecombe MP, as an alliance between the Marden History Group and the Archives Department of the KCC.
2009 Website Membership began. The database was developed and sponsored by a local company “On Click”. It can now be accessed from anywhere on earth.
2010 National Award. The Heritage Centre won the “Archive of the Year Award 2010” from the Family History Monthly Magazine. The award was presented by the Editor on 18
th October. She commended the Centre’s quality, its website, database and
community spirit.

Quote from the Citation: The Marden Heritage Centre opened in 2008. Anything concerning the parish of Marden in Kent is collected: Parish Registers, newspaper cuttings, Wills, Census Returns, Poor Law Records, documents, photographs and many more. Drawing on skills available in a rural village, whose traditional income has come from hops and fruit, a band of volunteers has developed and maintains a village archive which attracts attention from villagers, people from afar and many other history groups. The archives and resources of this multi-media Centre are searchable at www.mardenhistory.org.uk Current Activities So what do these paragons actually do? They receive items, identify, catalogue and maintain them; They research and develop the Archive; They receive and advise visitors; The all-volunteer staff, often working in pairs, keep the Centre open 18 hours a
week; They stage four exhibitions a year; They have published 21 books or booklets, 3 videos, 2 calendars; They plan further Joint Ventures, for example with the Primary School The Archive now includes 4,600 photographs, documents and objects. 40 – 50 volunteers perform all the 71 different tasks that are required to maintain the Centre and its records. In 2008 the Centre received 975 visitors including 176 for particular events. In 2009 there were 857 visitors including 212 for events. The figures for 2010 were 810 and 243. The same service delivered by professional staff would cost £50,000 - £75,000 a year. The actual cost is £2,000 – for rent, projects, expenses. They are funded by the Friends of Marden’s Heritage, by their annual Hog Roast, and by the sale of publications. In short, they fulfil their mission to “Seek, Preserve, Research, Inspire Interest in and Transmit the History of the Parish of Marden: SPRIT” They preserve the future of our past. Current Projects include: Work with Parliamentary Archives and the Centre for Kentish Studies in sharing
knowledge with those from whom it emanates – that is, us. There have so far been nine meetings on the London-Dover Railway, its planning,
construction and early operation, using Heritage Centre records on people, landscape, economy, together with Paddock Wood, Staplehurst and Headcorn.
Working towards a Kent History Network, a co-ordinated approach throughout the County, with the Centre for Kentish Studies as its hub.
The refurbishment of a World War II Air Raid Siren, donated by the Ministry of Defence at Hythe, the original Mounting Post being retrieved from behind the Unicorn and repainted in Brunswick Green – at a total cost of £698.73.
10
The refurbishment of a K6 Red Telephone Box, donated by Benenden Parish Council, which is being disconnected, transported, stored and repainted in the original Vermillion Red – at a total cost of £199.80.
Subject to Planning Permission, it is intended to erect these two historic objects on the greensward at the entrance to the car park, opposite the Library. The siren may be sounded on appropriate public occasions.
A flight from Headcorn for aerial photographs of the village by Jeremy Britcher at a cost of £110.
We come at last to the question you asked me to answer: What have they spent our money on in 2010? Telephone Box £200 Siren £700 Flight from Headcorn £100 Contribution to rent to KCC £500
Total £1,500 I submit that this is cheap at the price. The History Group and its Heritage Centre are a striking example of local initiative, Volunteering in Action, dare I say it “the Big Society”. We villagers created, developed and maintain an award-winning village archive to safeguard the future of our past. Congratulations to David McFarland and his colleagues. The whole village should be proud of them. They well deserve the continued support of the Friends of Marden’s Heritage.

Five years ago, Eladio Simeón Pineda’s community was a group of poor farm labourers. Then Christian Aid partner Soppexcca (pronounced so-pecks-ka) offered them credit to establish themselves as coffee farmers and supported them to work together as a cooperative. Eladio and the other members of the La Paz del Tuma cooperative now hope that together they will transform their own community.
Even though the coffee farmers of La Paz del Tuma have only been working with Soppexcca for a short time, their lives are already changing for the better. The credit which Soppexcca gave to Eladio and the other farmers has been vital in getting them started. The cooperative has a community fund that will be used to achieve the dreams which Eladio and his fellow farmers once thought were out of their reach.
For the people of Jinotega, Nicaragua, coffee isn’t just a caffeine kick – it’s a means of transforming the lives of entire communities. By getting involved in Christian Aid Week, you can help to make this transformation possible.
‘I hope one day we will have a school on this land, clean water and latrines,’ says Eladio.
Eladio knows that transformation is possible. He is driven by the example of a nearby community, where Gustavo Adolfo Talavera and the members of the Los Alpes cooperative have been supported by Soppexcca for 12 years. In that time, they have successfully worked to establish a school and a health centre for their community.
The hopes of the people of La Paz del Tuma are hopes held for the whole community. Eladio works every day towards his dream of a purpose-built school, clean water and latrines for all the farming families of La Paz del Tuma.
Soppexcca’s support for coffee cooperatives like La Paz del Tuma and Los Alpes allows communities to see a bigger picture, full of possibilities for the future.
You can be part of the story of transformation which is unfolding right now in Nicaragua.
By getting involved in Christian Aid Week in your own community, you can help to turn the hopes of communities all around the world into realities. You can be part of a movement which is transforming lives.
To find out how, visit www.caweek.org or talk to your local Christian Aid Week coordinator.
To give to Christian Aid Week, visit www.caweek.org or call 08080 006 006.

Christian Aid Week 15-21 May 2011
Christian Aid helps people in poverty out of poverty. More than this it helps people to help themselves out of poverty. cakes gratefully received

Marden Tennis Club Those of you who walk past our courts will know that we are in the throes of resurfacing. It has been some time since we did this and although, strictly speaking, the courts should have been resurfaced a couple of years ago, we have only recently felt confident enough to proceed with what is a major undertaking for a club of our size. Despite the many millions of pounds which pour into the LTA’s coffers, none of this money has found its way to Marden Tennis Club despite the tremendous work we do on the coaching front. Anyone passing the courts on a Saturday morning during the coaching sessions will know just how many young people we attract and we are now seeing the children of the children we coached all those years ago. All of the cost of this project has been met from accumulated members’ subscriptions and several fund-raising initiatives. We expect to be able to use the courts for the first time on the 1
st May for a club
morning with the usual Wednesday evening club evenings commencing on the 4th
May. Our Family Open Day, really for our junior members, will be held on the 7th
May starting at 10.00am for two hours. Admission is free and racquets are available. Parents, bring your children along; you might be bitten by the tennis bug and want to join us. Don’t worry about the fact that you might never have played or haven’t played for a long time, we have senior coaching sessions on Thursday evenings just for you. Other dates for your diary are as follows:- Junior Coaching starts on the 14
th May for 10 weeks. There are three sessions
between 9.30am and 11.45am. Participants will be told at the open day which session they should attend. The cost is £2 for members and £3 for non-members. Intermediate and Senior Coaching begins on the 12th May also for 10 weeks. Intermediate members’ coaching is from 6.15pm to 7.15pm and then the seniors take over for another hour. Fees are the same as for juniors. We have American Tournaments on the 8
th May and the 4
th September and there
are Men’s and Ladies’ team practices scheduled for Tuesday and Friday evenings. The Club plays a full schedule of league fixtures against other clubs in the area and details of all fixtures and events are in the club house and on our notice board by the post office. Come and join us. Full details can be obtained from Carole Ennis on 01622 831406 or [email protected]. Malcolm Bryant

Marden Horticultural Society At our May meeting we shall have a slightly different topic than usual as Linda Hambledon Merrywood is coming to talk to us on "Making
Traditional Herb Soaps etc with plants and herbs" and she will be bringing the herbs and plants which she uses. Tuesday May 10th at
7.30pm in the Vestry Hall and as usual non-members are very welcome to join us on that evening.
Our annual Plant Sale takes place on Saturday May 21st in the Vestry Hall 9.00am to 12 noon so come and buy your plants - there will be Bedding, Basket and Container plants, Vegetable plants and Herbaceous plants - so something for everyone. There will be an exhibition by the Local History group and the WI will be having a Cake Stall and also serving Tea and Coffee so it will be quite a village event! For any further information please contact either Zubeida on 01622 831163 or Angela on 01622 831915.
Marden WI Jean and Brian Waterman gave us an interesting and informative talk on Hanging Baskets. We were shown all sorts of pots and liners and advised to keep terracotta pots for summer use only. Multi-purpose compost mixed with perlite and slow release phostrogen was best for a longer lasting flower display. Jean then made up a hanging basket ready to be hung out in May. We were then treated to a slide show, photos taken on visits to local villages as well as other countries showing all sorts of flower displays. One basket had tomatoes and that had yielded 9lbs of fruit. Another attractive one was of tall saucepan stands either side of a front door, each shelf had some pots of lobelia. One hotel in Wales had so many baskets in their entrance that it looked absurd. Plenty of ideas for us all to get going to make our gardens beautiful. To the future, we have a busy year ahead with a visit to the Jempsons Supermarket near Rye plus a cream tea in June, a tour of Great Dixter in July and then a theatre trip in the autumn yet to be arranged. Next month we have an Annual meeting and Resolutions. Then David McFarland will talk about the Heritage Centre. Enquiries to Kay East (01622 820328) or Jean Robertson (01622 831331). Mary Beynon

MARDEN SOCIETY The March meeting was a talk with accordion music and old English folk songs, accompanied by an illustrated talk on old English folk customs, seasonal and otherwise. Drs. Mick Lynn and Geoff Doel were very enthusiastic about their subject, and the Pagan roots of many of the rituals were fascinating. So now to May - On Wednesday May 25th, 8pm in the Old School Room of the Memorial Hall, Anthea Bryant will talk on Canterbury, The Hidden City. Saints and Pilgrims including the Sailing of the Mayflower. Canterbury is the oldest city in Kent, and Roman ruins and artefacts are still being uncovered. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
