Chairman’s Corner– Bob Swanson, Chairman of the Board
Your new Board of Governors and
Committees have been busy the last
couple of months formulating their goals
for the year, reviewing last year’s survey
and member input, and looking for new ideas to enhance your
club experience. The Board will focus on two primary goals
this year, which are:
• Define and enhance the club experience - this will involve
benchmarking other top clubs in our area, to foster ideas on
how to personalize and improve your experience at the Club.
• Leverage technology - a technology committee will generate
innovative ideas to enhance your day-to-day interactions with
the Club.
In addition, we will continue our focus towards our philan-
thropic goal of elevating, broadening and expanding the Four
Seasons for Life/Cool October fundraiser.
Although we have seen many exciting changes at our Club
recently, we have several projects in the works this year includ-
ing: a complete remodel of the fitness locker room, installation
of Techno weight training equipment, a new family pool,
remodel of the Kids for All Season area, renovation of the
outdoor tennis court area, and of course the highly anticipated
renovation of the TPC golf course!
With the beautiful weather we enjoy this time of year in North
Texas, look into each section of this Sportsline for all of the vari-
ous spring and summer activities taking place. Get out and enjoy
some of the finest facilities in the Southwest, available to us right
here in our own backyard – your Las Colinas Sports Club!

Committee system “Year in Review,”as well as our first
meetings of the new year, I am now relishing in how
fortunate our Club is to have such an extraordinarily
strong Board and Committees. In my 16-year tenure here, I have witnessed the
entire system, with the guidance of the members, evolve every year in strength,
process, accountability and results.
The Board and Committee system began in the late 80s, and the process was
refined in the mid 90s under the guidance of Joe Cleary, a Byron and Peggy
Nelson Legacy Award recipient. Today, it is awe inspiring to see the wealth of
talent that serves the Club on a volunteer basis, many of whom are current or
former executives with major companies. It is this talent that helps make the
Club experience better for everyone. The individuals who have served over the
years have the common characteristics of a passionate commitment to the Club
and a positive outlook when seeking solutions.
Some of the results of these combined efforts include the rejuvenation of the
Club social culture with fun, creative events such as the Member Cocktails, Club
Dinners, the new Members Lounge, the Patio and Byron’s, Tennis Happy Hours
and countless tournaments in all sports. Also, the focus on our junior events
was born out of the committee system. Hundreds of our children participate in
Summerfest Camps and programming extends year round. Another result is the
daily recognition of our Club members that you see in the form of trophies in
the lobby, Club Champions photos in the Lounge, Champions Cocktail in
November, and features on the web site and weekly watch.
If you are thinking about becoming part of this thriving system, please visit our
web site at www.thesportsclubfourseasons.com, where we feature our Board and
Committees. Please feel free to contact any one of our members with your interest
and/or opinions. We look forward to your participation and a productive 2007!

of the American Culinary Federation-approved program at Johnson County Community College in
Overland Park, Kansas. Katie is married to Philip Natale, a New York native and Sommelier.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS
From the GreenJohn P. Cunningham, CGCS, Director of Golf Course
Operations and Landscaping
I would like to start off by saying thank you. I arrived here at theFour Seasons in the beginning of October and have had such awarm welcome. The first few months have been quite busy for me,but I will make every effort to get out and meet even more of the membership over thenext few months.
The Cottonwood Valley project has been completed. We have accomplished quite a bit overthe past few months despite the “cool” temperatures. The greens have grown in nicely, and we will be lightly topdressing and rolling them in order to provide a great playing surface. The bunkers will be hand raked, and we will be tamping and compacting them periodically in order to help the settling process. We installed drainage in a number of landing areas includ-ing #4 and #6. We will also be tamping and rolling the drain lines to smooth these areas.
We are preparing the TPC golf course for the upcoming tournament by finishing the sodon the greens and putting the finishing touches on the bunkers. The volunteer lists arebeing assembled and we are looking forward to a successful event!
GolfAn Earnest Opinion – Paul Earnest, Director of Golf
I spent a Sunday afternoon in January watching Tiger Woodsbegin his 2007 season by melting those around him. He madebirdie, eagles on holes 8 and 9, watched others fade and securedthe victory with two more birdies for a round of 66 and his 7th con-
secutive PGA Tour title. Tiger is the only story when he plays. He is that dominating rightnow. He is, however, less than 2/3 of the way to a record set by Byron Nelson. Ironic really,as we still mourn the loss of our friend, that Tiger is showing us a glimpse of what I couldnever relate to. The words “11 Straight” have rolled off many of our tongues so easily, butcould we really appreciate his golf achievement to its full extent? At Mr. Nelson’s Memorialin September, people spoke of his competitive golf nature, but mostly about how great aman he was. And yet, while watching Tiger’s performance over the past several months, Ifelt that I had a front row seat at how dominating Mr. Nelson had become in the world ofgolf some 60 years ago. Thank you, Tiger, for providing the ticket!

Your Seasonal Golf Tip…– Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction
Cottonwood Valley has reopened with some wonderful enhance-ments. A very noticeable one is the new sand in the bunkers. It’sonly fitting to remind you of a few important keys to playing a suc-cessful bunker shot. Understanding what part of the clubface hitsthe sand will help you improve your bunker play. If the front edge of the sand wedge hitsthe sand, it will dig. That’s fine if you have a buried lie. But for normal lies in the bunker, you want to use the bottom of the club or the “bounce” to hit the sand. This will allow theclub to slide, not dig, through the sand and under the ball. Remember to “spank” the sandwith the bottom of the club and follow through for better bunker shots.
2007 EDS Byron Nelson ChampionshipHonoring Byron’s Legacy of Good Works
Four Seasons Resort and Club is proud to host the 2007EDS Byron Nelson Championship. This is truly one of themost exciting times of the year in all of North Texas whenspring is erupting, golf clubs are flying, and the largest socialevent in Texas unfolds in the backyard of our own SportsClub! Yet it will be different from all the other years in thateveryone will sorely miss the presence of tournament name-sake, fellow club member and friend, Byron Nelson.
Byron frequently said that when it came to making decisionsabout golf or anything related to the tournament, he always askedhimself and others, “Is it good for the game?”
When considering the shear impact of the tournament's charita-ble dollars on the lives of children and families in the North TexasCommunity - it’s an easy answer. When considering the dynamicimpact that the tournament has on the local economy, corporate entertainment and golf retail opportuni-ties - again, an easy yes. And when it comes to the opportunity for national and international entertain-ment and promotion of a great sport in the hands of some of the leading talent on the PGA andEuropean Tours - there is no doubt, it is good for the game.
From the perspective of The Sports Club, it is operationally challenging and exceptionally rewarding tobe the host site of this spectacular sports spectacle. Sharing golf courses, locker rooms, tennis courts, andalmost everything with our visitors is required. But, do we think it passes the Byron test? Absolutely!
So we invite you to take part in this special week of celebration in whatever way you mostenjoy - and while doing so, think of the gentleman who inspired many generations of golfersand people to simply “do good.”

The Center-Right: Moving Awayfrom the Left Coast- James Tidwell, Four Seasons Sommelier
California is the largest wine-producing state and gets its due in
the wine media. While Washington and Oregon are the next best-
known wine-producing states, they rank #3 and #4, respectively, in
volume. New York is #2, New Jersey is #5, and Virginia is #6, yet we hear little about them
from the wine press. All 50 states produce wine, so odds are that at least some other worth-
while wines are available from states inland from the Left Coast.
In Idaho, Ste. Chapelle produces a wonderful Riesling Icewine: sweet, stone-fruited with
naturally high acidity. In New Mexico, Gruet produces a variety of sparklers: dry, clean, and
apply. In New York, Dr. Konstantin Frank produces a dry Riesling: steely, minerally with tart
lime flavors. In Colorado, Cottonwood Cellars produces a Lemberger: red, structured with tart
cherry flavors. And, these are only a handful of high-quality producers from other states.
Stone Hill Winery in Missouri, Peninsula Cellars in Michigan, and Sakonnet Vineyards in
Rhode Island are other wineries that produce benchmark wines from overlooked states.
(Unfortunately, I do not believe that they are distributed in Texas.)
So, begin searching beyond the obvious West Coast choices for excellent wine values
from sea to shining sea.
