How does one define oneself; wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, artist? I’m allof the above and much more. Mostly I am someone who loves what I do. WhenI am in my workspace dyeing fabric, painting or sewing I am having a ball. Thechallenge of making a wonderful garment or quilted wall hanging is the ultimatehigh. As I explore what inspires me I find myself returning to themes of nature,the ultimate designer. Taking off on one of these themes is like traveling downan unknown road full of wonders to explore.

My training is in art and fashion design, so putting the two together is veryexciting. I have been teaching fashion design for the past 20 years, and I alsohave an ongoing wearable art class in Claremont, CA; which I really loveteaching. Sharing what I know with others and seeing them use that knowledgeis so fulfilling. When I learn something new I can’t wait to teach it to someoneelse and see what wonderful things they can do.

Presently I am serving as the president of the Wearable Art Connection of Southern California, which putsme side by side with the most wonderful talented women in the world. How lucky am I?

Well - March is already here – Are we ready?

Less than 2 weeks remain to finish your quilt, doll, wearable, etc.Wednesday, March 14, at 5 p.m., the 2007 Show Committee starts entrytake-in at the Hotel. Please contact the 007’s if you have any last minutequestions!

Our Glendale Quilt Guild general meeting is being held one week earlier, on March 7, dueto the Quilt Show’s opening the following week. Diane Ricks, my guru and mentor, will beour speaker for this meeting. In her trunk show will be items of interest to everyone -traditional or artsy, quilters, wearable artists, lovers of batiks or dyed silk fans. Come andlearn about her newest workshop “Feathery Frays”! She is introducing this newestworkshop at our Quilt Show and will be teaching a total of 4 classes. (See pictures below).Diane is bringing the garments she designed for the Fairfield/Bernina Fashion Shows inHouston to our March meeting. Just seeing these garments is worthy of your attendance,but more than that, she is an amazing teacher. Jean Giacomelli, Joan Hutter, Karen Millmanand I drive over 30 miles each way to attend her classes in Claremont each week. From dyingthe fabric to sewing it into a garment, Diane willingly shares her knowledge with everyone.

2007 Quilt Show Message from the 007s

In preparation the quilt show committee held a “dress rehearsal” with each member (startingwith Wednesday ’s entry submission through Sunday ’s take down) summarizing her part in theshow. Happily, everyone knows her role, and we all are ready to raise the curtains on a ¡FiestaFantastica!

• PPaappeerrwwoorrkk for all entries to the show has been submitted except for the Small Quilt Challenge. By thetime you read this, Colleen Shier will have contacted those who purchased a small quilt challenge packet (70+quilters). We hope to see lots and lots of challenge quilts--all interesting interpretations of “Favorite Things.”The last small quilt challenge was a very successful display of creativity that surely will be duplicated and evensurpassed this year.

• CCoorrrreecctt iioonn:: Quilt appraisals by Ann Copeland, certified appraiser, are $40 (not $45 as we reported inthe last newsletter). Pease review the information at the guild website for a written appraisal form. To contactAnne Copeland, please e-mail her at [email protected].

Members who made it to the February general meeting in spite of its falling on Valentine’s Day weretreated to a terrific “Show & Share” and rewarded for bringing their “love” to the guild by having anextra large number of door prizes awarded that evening...

Editor New members and old can benefit from participating inFriendship Groups as they join together for quilting fun. If you’renot already a member of a mini-group, and think you might beinterested, you can contact Mary Beth Kile at (818) 790-4402 forinformation about existing groups in your area, or on how to get anew group started.

Friendship Groups are quilters who meet regularly inmembers’ homes or another designated location for the purpose ofencouraging one another in their craft. Each group determines howoften to meet, where and when, and what projects they want to takeon. Some groups are large and others are small. Some cater tospecific interests such as hand-quilting, art quilts or applique, whileothers do it all. There is bound to be something out there to matcheveryone’s interests. Other benefits of joining a mini-group are:

• Learning new skills and techniques from others• Sharing skills you have perfected• Exchanging patterns, fabrics or ???• Taking field trips & making quilt runs• Going to classes, quilt shows, retreats or other events• Participating in group quilting activities such as:

- challenge quilts- Round Robin quilts- making quilts for charities

The general meetings are a great place to talk to memberswho are already in groups and obtain more ideas, as well as get intouch with people who share your specific quilting interests.

Glendale Quilt Guild, Inc. is a non-profit corporation. The purpose is to contribute to the knowledge of,

and to promote the appreciation of, fine quilts, quiltmaking and collecting; to gain knowledge of quilt techniques,

patterns, history and quiltmakers through educational meetings, travel and friendship.

Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the

Glendale Central Library Auditorium, 222 East Harvard Street, Glendale, California.

Social time: 6:30 - 7:00 pm. Meeting begins at 7:00 pm. Guest fees: $5. per meeting.

Membership dues are payable July 1 and are delinquent at the end of the August General Meeting.
