TF Mountain Eagle,
Another month has gone by.
Some of us are very busy and
some are waiting for the rest of
their equipment to arrive so they
can get to work.
Our focus remains resetting
our equipment (I talked about it
last month) and doing individual
training to include: combat life-
saver, ranges, drivers training
and re-establishing processes.
HSC is really putting on a full
court press in the efforts to win
the Army Award for Mainte-
nance Excellence…we are one
of two Army finalists…we’ll
know soon.
We had a great Hail and Fare-
well this month. We said fare-
well to CPT Richardson our A
Co Commander who is off to
Siena College in NY. CPT
Richardson’s change of com-
mand is 1 MAR. We wish him
and Jennifer good luck with their
ROTC assignment. HSC 1SG
Lillard is leaving us and taking a
flight detachment at Fort Bel-
voir. It’s always hard on a unit
when the first sergeant leaves
but we got lucky and 1SG Jerni-
gen is already at the helm. CPT
Temple our S3 is leaving us in
April along with Heather and his
beautiful family. CPT Temple
was our C Company Com-
mander when we left for Af-
ghanistan. Our new S3 should
be in next month. CW4 Kemple
our Support Operations Aviation
Officer is off to Fort Rucker;
however, SPO gains an ammuni-
tion warrant technician – CW2
Faust…welcome. CPT Height-
shoe (HSC Commander) will
change command on 9 MAR 12
and then move into the S3 shop.
His replacement is CPT Nissen
coming to us out of the Ad-
vanced Course and will be fol-
lowed here by
her husband
and son very
soon.

Headquarters & Support Company - Battle Penguins
From the desk of Penguin 6,
HSC Battle Penguin Families, well
here we are moving very quickly into
February and hopefully old man win-
ter will stays as mild as he has been.
But as you all know, his cold breath
has been breathing down our necks
but the mission goes on.
Unfortunately, my tenure as Com-
mander for this great organization is
coming to a close. You know what
they say ―All Good Things Come To
An End…‖ But it has been a great
ride and we are going to finish strong
and show the new Company Com-
mander what a great organization the
Battle Penguins are. In saying as much, I
would like to take the opportunity to
welcome CPT Natalie Nissen as the new
incoming Company Commander. In the
short time that she has been around the
Company I get the feeling that she sees
what a great organization she is inherit-
ing.
As well, I would like to say farewell
to 1SG Lillard. He and 1SG Jernigan
conducted their Change of Responsibil-
ity on 3 February 2012. The emotion
ran high and more than a few tears were
shed as we said farewell to our ―Poppa
Smurf‖ AKA: Penguin 7. 1SG Lillard
and his fiancé Terry are on their way
south, out of the cold, heading to Fort
Belvoir, Va. We wish he and his family
all due luck and he best of wishes. He
will be missed.
With a loss we gain… 1SG Kenneth
Jernigan comes on board as the new
Penguin 7. I want to welcome him, his
wife Charlene and his beautiful daugh-
ters to the Penguin Family.
Well gang, Reset of all of the organi-
zations equipment is underway and the
Battle Penguins are working hard every
day. To add to the mix, this outstanding
Motor pool team has pulled together
getting the Battle Penguins in the run-
ning for the All Army Maintenance Ex-
cellence Award. The Penguins are one
of two finalists for our category and the
competition is fierce. Knowing our Sol-
diers, the Award is in the Bag… Play by
play will follow as we get updates… ;)
Of course the rest of the Penguins are
hard at work as well, and I thank them
every day for doing what they do. To
you, the families, I thank you as well for
being the mortar that binds us all to-
gether and carries that pride in your Sol-
diers, husbands, wives, children, brothers
and sisters. You are the reason we do
what we do… For now, good bye and
bless you all…

saddle. As we transition from
the reset phase to the training
phase, the company is getting
more training, schools, and
taskings. This is also the most
challenging time because
Families start to feel the pres-
sure of unresolved issues.
Know that our unit wants to
enhance and support the Sol-
dier and your Family. You
can always offer suggestions
or request assistance and know
that we are always here to sup-
port you.

Gigi Tomsu
B Company FRG Leader
Hello Bravo Company! I
would like to take a moment to
introduce myself. My name is
Gigi Tomsu, and I am your new
FRG Leader. This is my fifth
year being stationed here on
Fort Drum. My family and I
have also been part of Bravo
Company since we arrived. I
have been participating in the
FRG for four years. I started as
a key caller for two years, and
now I am proud to take this new
position. With my past experi-
ences with the FRG, I hope to
successfully serve the families
and soldiers.
I would like to tell you a lit-
tle bit about myself. I am mar-
ried to SPC Sean Tomsu. We
have two beautiful children.
My son is three years old, and
my daughter will almost be nine
months old. Along with my
FRG duties, I am a student at
Ashford University, and I also
volunteer at Black River Coop-
erative Preschool. My main
interests are being outdoors
whether it be fishing or just tak-
ing a stroll through the park.
As you all may know, we
still need volunteers. I am hop-
ing to plan for future activities,
however, we do not have a
treasurer to control funds. We
also need key callers. Key call-
ers are essential because they
give out important information
along with keeping contact
information up-to-date. If you
are interested in any one of
these positions, please call me
at 315-777-6521 or email gigi-
[email protected] .
Our next FRG meeting is
on March 8 at 5pm. It will be
at the Adirondack Creek Com-
munity Center located on main
post. I look forward to getting
to know all of you. I hope to
see you at our next FRG meet-
ing!

Charlie Company - Ravens
P A G E 5 V O L U M E I , I S S U E 2 3
By CPT Matthew Thompson
C Company Commander
February was a busy month for
Charlie Company. We spent most
of the month preparing for the test-
ing and validation of much of our
key Signal equipment, called the
Warfighter Information Network-
Tactical, or WIN-T for short. If
you aren’t familiar it is a set of
systems designed to create a net-
work for secure voice and data trans-
mission via satellites that provide
worldwide communications to our
nation’s Warfighters. We also spent
a lot of time getting our equipment
out of storage that we did not take on
the most recent deployment to Af-
ghanistan. The Ravens have been
out braving the cold, inventorying
countless pieces of equipment, and
also finding time to conduct training
in-between.
We’ve said goodbye to many long
time Ravens who have served the
brigade for many years, we saw pro-
motions to Specialist, Sergeant, and
Staff Sergeant. We transitioned our
Family Readiness Group leader from
Adriana Brownstein, who did won-
derful things for us, and welcomed
our new FRG Leader, Megan Wilson
who has answered the call for us.
We are still looking for volunteers for
our Treasurer and Key Caller positions.
We will be having our first company
FRG meeting on March 13th at 3 p.m.
in the Raven’s Roost, building 20620
Munn’s Corner Road (C CO Headquar-
ters) for a potluck…hope to see every-
one there!
Directions to Charlie Company Head-
quarters: From Main Post, turn right on
Route 26, make a left at the light into
Wheeler Sack Airfield, come through
gate to three way stop sign, stay in right
lane to go forward. Charlie Company
is on the right hand side pass Shoppette
in a metal fab, Building 20620.

Charlie Company FRG Notes Megan Wilson
C Company FRG Leader
Hi, my name is Megan Wilson. I was
born and raised in the San Fernando Valley
of southern California and was attending
college majoring in Radio Broadcasting. I
have always had friends in various branches
of military service and kept in contact with
them as they moved and deployed all over
the world. I understand the challenge in
communicating across time zones, limited
windows of availability, and the ever-
dreaded last minute changes. I know how
nerve wracking it is to not know what’s
going on with your loved one, or how disap-
pointing it is to miss out on a ceremony. On
the other side, I know how those Soldiers
need their family and friends support and
e n c o u r a g e m e n t .
Now I'm part of that military family
more then ever, I married SPC Wilson on
January 5th 2012 and arrived in Fort Drum
about 2 weeks later. I was really over-
whelmed at first, especially with no one to
ask for advice. Rather than be discouraged, I
have stepped up to become that beacon for
other Soldiers and their families as the C. Co
FRG Leader. We will help new families get
acquainted with the area and get all the in-
formation they need. We will celebrate mar-
riages and births into our families. We will see
each other off to new units. Together we can
help ensure that the Soldiers in our unit will be
able to get in touch with their families back
home, and that the families will always "get the
memo". Even here in garrison we can reinforce
the family bonds of our unit. By brainstorming
and working closely with our unit commanders
we can create activities and events that will
allow each individual family to spend time
together, and cause better unit cohesion by
bringing the Charlie Ravens family together.
We need to work together though. We are
working hard to dissolve the rumors about FRG
and create a team that supports and informs one
another. To accomplish that mission we need
support . Volunteerism plays a key role in our
success; we need key-callers to keep informa-
tion flowing, and a treasurer to keep track of
available funds. We need people just to donate
some of their time to help set up and run events,
or for that matter some individuals to come up
with great ideas that we can work with. Every-
one is invited to participate, even single sol-
diers. If anyone has any questions feel free to
contact me
[email protected] or at 818-279-3927.

―I have fought the good

Once again we are in a time
of transition, life with its
many changes, Soldiers
coming Soldiers going.
Commands are changing.
Responsibilities are rotat-
ing, hails and farewells and
on and on. If we are going
to live well one of the tests
we must pass regularly is to
finish strong. It is natural
for our mind to begin to
leave the place where we
are and we get fixated with
where we are going. It is
human nature to look for-
ward to where we are go-
ing. However, to check out
before we leave is to lose
out on the time we are given
at this very moment for this
specific endeavor which
cheapens our lives and our
relationships. That is why we
are to treasure the present. I
said it often in Afghanistan
don’t count the days but
make your days count. For
how we live in the moment
will strengthen our lives, our
relationships as well as our
future.
If you are going to arrive at a
place where you would like
to get then think about where
you are going, but live today
well. I often ask people
where do you see yourself in
the future? What are your
plans to get there? If you’re
going to get to the ―where‖
you have to answer the
―what‖ and the ―how‖. So
let’s live today with a sense
of purpose and dedication.
Value your job, the conversa-
tions, the people, even though
you are moving on. As you
make your plans and as your
mind goes to that next place
remember that how you are
treating the events of today
and this week will impact
how strong you will be when
you get to the place your
mind keeps going to now.
Take time today to listen to
someone with ―active listen-
ing‖, encourage someone,
look for ways to make some-
body’s day better because you
stepped into it and made a
positive contribution.
God, grant me the persever-
ance to finish well!

you with parenting or stress/anger man-
agement issues (now who of us never
experience any stress???), Financial
Readiness to help you figure your fi-
nances out, Employment Readiness to
help you prepare to get that job you
want, amongst other programs. And
that’s just at ACS. Please be sure to look
at the CLIF Notes (Community Leaders
Information Forum) once a month, to
find activities that interest you. We place
these in our FRSA Flash (Family Readi-
ness Support Assistant) which is mailed
out to everyone weekly. If you aren’t
receiving these or the monthly newsletter
(on e-mail), please let our FRSA, Mich-
ele Galloway, know at 774-1206, and
she will get you on the list.
It is incredible how much changeover we
have experienced in the last few months.
We lost all our FRG Leaders and many
of our Key Callers and Treasurers. I am
happy to inform you that as of the mid-
dle of February we now have 3 of our 4
FRG Leader positions filled. I’d like to
warmly welcome Sarah Popp as A Co FRG
Leader, and Gigi Tomsu as B Co FRG
Leader. They’ve both been around a long
time as Key Callers and graciously ac-
cepted more responsibility. Then we have
Megan Wilson joining us as the C Co FRG
Leader. She is only married a month, and
just arrived at Ft. Drum, yet she is excited
to help the unit out as well. Thank you
ladies for taking the plunge and joining our
FRG team! To everyone else I ask you to
please help these ladies, as it can’t be done
alone. Forget past experiences and come
make your FRG something you want to be
a part of. We still need an HSC FRG
Leader and all companies need Key Callers
and Treasurers. A small amount of work
can bring new friendships and give you
something worthwhile to do. Beginning in
March, our FRG Meetings will be held at
company level. So please look at your
company’s FRG article to find out the date
and specific info for your next meeting.
Last I want to ensure you are aware of a
couple great opportunities available to us
at Ft. Drum. The Tax Assistance Center
is open to do your taxes for FREE. Call
them at 772-6727/3735 to make a next
day appointment. Please don’t go pay
someone to do your taxes when you can
have them done for free! Also, the Dave
Ramsey Financial Peace University is
another FREE program available to sin-
gle and married Soldiers and spouses to
help you really learn how to take care of
your finances and plan for your financial
future. Call 772-5540 to register or go to
www.DaveRamsey.com. It’s an awe-
some program and can really educate
you and change your future! Take care
277th!
