But there were bright spots; Hyundai-Kia, reported a 7% jump in first quarter sales. Volvo was up 10%. And Honda and VW were both up 2% compared to a year ago. But those brands didn’t have much company. Among other brands, General Motors reported a 7% drop in Q1 sales – including an 8.3% drop in March. Toyota sales were down 5%. Nissan was off 12%. Fiat-Chrysler sales declined 3% with an 11% sales decline of its Jeep brand. Mercedes was down 9%. Audi was down 4%. Genesis also posted weaker Q1 sales with volume off 3%. Subaru sales skidded 10%. Ford reports Q1 numbers Thursday. There are plenty of drags on the auto market. Interest rates have climbed higher. So too have sticker prices. J.D. Power says the average price for a new vehicle was a record $33,319 in Q1. Plus the demand that drove sales in the years after the recession has waned. “We can now confidently say new vehicle sales are past their peak,” said Jeremy Acevedo, an auto analyst at Edmunds. “The question now is what the new normal will be.” TVB president Steve Lanzano said the Q1 numbers aren’t a huge surprise, but thinks January and February rarely are good harbingers of the year to come. He agrees affordability is becoming an issue for some buyers, pushing them onto the pre-owned lot. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing for us,” Lanzano said. “We are seeing more marketing behind those vehicles.” Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive, said the weakness in auto sales so far this year has been on the retail side, as opposed to fleet sales. “Incentives remain relatively low and auto loan rates have not improved, so consumers haven’t had a compelling reason to buy,” he said, pointing out last year’s tax reform checks aren’t in shopper pockets this year. Cox calculates average new vehicle loan payments are up 3.5% compared to last year and average lease payments are up 2.8%. “The pool of people who can afford to buy a new vehicle is being reduced by higher prices and affordability concerns, and we’re likely seeing signs of that in the sales numbers,” Smoke said. Average incentive spending by automakers was down 5% in March according to for TrueCar’s ALG. “Incentives are not as rich as they were last year,” confirmed Eric Lyman, its chief industry analyst. The plan is for the duo to do a joint arc on NCIS: Los Angeles though, in the current environment when reboots are more popular than ever, their appearance together reprising their popular characters has raised speculation that, in success, it could potentially lead to some sort of a JAG revival/reboot. Bell will reprise her JAG character, Lieutenant Colonel Sarah “Mac” MacKenzie. She’ll appear in the season finale episode airing on Sunday, May 19 at 10 PM (ET/PT)... Upcoming NBCUniversal daytime talker The Kelly Clarkson Show has been sold in 99 percent of the country. The one-hour daytime talk show has been cleared in more than 200 stations, including those in the top 165 markets. The show will be produced and taped in front of a live audience on the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles. It premieres Monday, Sept. 9… RuPaul Charles’ daily syndicated talk show has been picked up by Fox Television Stations for a three-week test run this summer. Titled RuPaul, the project was one of the high-profile new syndicated hopefuls for a fall 2019 launch. In a crowded space where most major station groups went for shows from their vertically integrated companies, it was tough for RuPaul, which comes from independent studio Warner Bros., to land a spot. But Fox Television Stations, embarking on life as a key part of the slimmed-down post-merger Fox, closed a deal. The talker will premiere June 10 and will air Monday through Friday on select Fox TV stations, including WNYW in New York and KTTV in Los Angeles... GROWTH ON HORIZON IN SMART-HOME SPACE The number of smart-home devices shipped globally is projected to reach 833 million units this year, according to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC). That would be an increase of 27 percent from a year ago, with estimates of 17 percent annual growth from now until 2023, reaching nearly 1.6 billion devices shipping in 2023. The smart-home market will be dominated by Amazon and Google, with Apple gaining traction in coming years, according to IDC. Video entertainment devices dominate the market, with 358 million devices shipping this year. Smart

speakers follow at 144 million devices, closely followed by home monitoring and security at 140 million units, each accounting for 17 percent share of the market. Other smart devices shipping this year include lighting (57 million units) and smart thermostats (19 million devices).

MARCH AUTO SALES(Continued from page 1) Lanzano said that sales results in

Q2 should give TV reps a better sense of where auto is heading in the second half of this year. “You’re going to start seeing deals trying to move that inventory off the lot, especially the 2019s, and there will be opportunities for us when there are incentives in the market,” he predicted. More attribution research showing how TV ads lead buyers to dealer websites should also help reps, Lanzano said. Analysts say that if auto sales continue to decline for the rest of 2019 at the same rate they did in the first quarter, the industry could see a significant decline in total sales compared to 2018. “It’s still early in the year, so there could be some surprises,” Acevedo agreed. “If inventory gets out of hand, it’s possible that automakers will react by pumping up incentives, which could give sales a bit of a boost.” Fiat-Chrysler says its Ram brand demonstrates the market hasn’t completely dried up. Ram sales increased 15% as the nameplate set a new March sales record. Meanwhile, Sales of Silverado pickup trucks fell nearly16 percent and the high-margin Chevy Suburban large SUV dropped 25 percent. Ford F-150 sales numbers will be reported tomorrow.

WHAT RETAILERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GEN Z Gen Z is set to shake up the retail market just like millennials did when they first acquired their purchasing power. Gen Zers ages 16 to 21 in the U.S. spend an estimated $143 billion a year, according to a 2018 report from Barkley, which defined the overall cohort as 7- to 21-year-olds. (This does not include the money spent on Gen Z by parents or the indirect spending influence they have on overall household spending.) Gen Zers have never known a life without the internet, so figuring out where to reach them and how to sway their purchasing decisions can be difficult for retailers that have just gotten into the swing of targeting millennials. The research firm eMarketer says they love Amazon. Gen Zers have the (digital) world at their fingertips, and they expect retailers to operate with the same speed and convenience as smartphones do. Amazon fits that bill, so it is no wonder that 64.3 percent of 18-to-24-year-old females polled said they bought clothing on Amazon in the past six months, according to a November 2018 survey by CPC Strategy. A little under half of those females said free and fast shipping was the No. 1 reason for clothes shopping on the platform—a key detail that retail operations teams should be aware of. Yet they still prefer to shop at brick-and-mortar stores. Despite all the Amazon love, more than two-thirds of consumers ages 13 to 21 surveyed by the National Retail Federation (NRF) said stores were their preferred purchasing channel. Much like teens before them, the habit is born out of a desire to spend time with friends. Of the 1,000 18- to 24-year-olds surveyed by Comscore in November 2018, 44 percent said that shopping with friends was their reason for going to stores. Another reason Gen Zers like to spend time in stores is so they can post their experience on Instagram or Snapchat —retailers can be sure they won’t be posting about it on Facebook. While a little over half of 13- to 17-year-olds said they were on the platform, just 10 percent reported it was the site they used most often, according to Pew Research polling last May. Snapchat takes that honor: 51 percent said it’s the platform they use most. Instagram was second in line to Snapchat; eMarketer forecasts that 46.1 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds in the U.S. will use Instagram by the end of 2019.

U.S. DURABLE-GOODS ORDERS FELL 1.6% IN FEB. Orders for long-lasting factory goods fell in February after three straight months of growth due to a sharp decline in civilian aircraft orders, although the overall drop was smaller than expected, The Wall Street Journal reports. Orders for durable goods — products designed to last at least three years, such as computers and machinery — sank 1.6 percent in February from January to a seasonally adjusted $250.58 billion, the Commerce Department said yesterday. Economists surveyed by The Journal had expected a 2.1 percent decline for the month.
