However, there is a persistentdiscrepancy in the “equalwork, equal pay” concept andstudies have shown menmaking as much as 700 Aru-bian florins ($400) per monthmore than women who per-form equivalent work.

It appears Aruban womenalso have to deal with thesexualization of their self-image, often exploited in ad-vertising and media and in

the society, some-times from a veryyoung age. Anec-dotal information in-dicates possiblesubstance abuse alsointerfering with theability to cope or ad-vance, this the stresscaused by womentaking on too manyresponsibilities: wor-king, parenting, andcommunity con-

tributing; Minister Hooyboer-Winklaar indicted much moreresearch is needed to accu-rately assess this situation.Social Services reported thatof those coming to their of-fices for helping 2011, andoverview reveals 28% weremen and 72% women. “Thiscould just indicate thatwomen are better at askingfor help than men,” shepointed out, “it requires farmore research to fully under-stand its meaning.”

Finalizing her presenta-tion, she suggested variousmethods for improvement, foremost relating to thetheme of this year’s Interna-tional Women’s Day, “Edu-cating Girls-InspiringFutures,” but she also re-minded the audience it is notonly for females “we have toeducate boys and enlist menin the program as well, tomake it work.”

Another area in whichAruba has been lacking fe-male participation and equal-ity is politics; the first womanin Aruban politics was LauraWernet-Paskel in 1949. As ofthe last elections in 2009,there has been a marked clos-ing of the gap between maleand female parliamentarians, but still, Minister Hooyboer-Winklaar is only the 5thwoman to head a ministry outof the 6 elections conductedsince Aruba achieved elec-toral autonomy.

On that note, the followingspeaker was particularly sig-nificant. Prime MinisterEmily de Jongh-Elhage wasthe last Prime Minister of theNetherlands Antilles from 26March 2006 until their disso-lution on 10 October 2010.She is now a member of theCouncil of Women WorldLeaders, an International net-work of current and formerwomen presidents and prime

ministers whose mission is tomobilize the highest-levelwomen leaders globally forcollective action on issues ofcritical importance to womenand equitable developmentand is leader of the Party forthe Restructured Antilles.

The morning session waspunctuated by the short film“By Her Hand” by RebeccaRoos, the first woman onAruba to establish a majordocumentary production com-pany. The film profiles Arubanwomen who are dynamic rolemodels for young islandwomen, in a variety of roles, such as President of the Cen-tral Bank of Aruba, JaneSemeleer, artist and commu-nity activist Giolina Hen-riquez, and EstherOffringa-Williams, mother ofworld-champion windsurferSarah-Quita Offringa, who lefther work to support her chil-dren in their pursuit of success.

Other speakers for the dayincluded Beth Brooks, Global

Vice-Chair of Ernst & Young, principal sponsors of the con-ference, motivational speak-ers Crystal Andrus and singerNatalie Hughes, and in the af-ternoon, Keynote Speaker,Dr. Jean Houston, consideredone of the foremost visionarythinkers and doers of ourtime and one of the principalfounders of the Human Po-tential Movement.

The conference ends todayat the YMCA in the Dakotasection of Oranjestad begin-ning at 9:00 PM. It is specialprogram conducted byCEDEHM, sponsored by TheWomen’s Club of Aruba, inwhich they will be launchinga Domestic Violence Interac-tive workshop. On the afternoon of the ceremony, the couple actuallystarted to feel a little nervous. To Jayna it felt like they weregetting married again for the first time. A quick trip to thebeach bar and chatting with the officiant and planner seem

David and Jayna met when David just moved to Memphis, Tennessee.David placed an ad in the newspaper, looking to meet someone who en-

Health Tip:

When Your Child Cries at Night-- Though it's tempting for parents to run to their child at the

slightest cry during the night, experts say that's not always the

best reaction.

The American Academy of

Pediatrics offers these sug-

gestions for when your child

cries at bedtime:

•Wait a few minutes before

responding; if the crying

continues, wait longer each

time before you respond to

the cries.

•Offer reassurance that

you're there, but don't play, linger or turn on a light if you do

enter the room.

•Each time you enter the room, stay a little farther from the

bed; eventually, reassure your child without entering the room.

•When your child calls for you, offer a gentle reminder that it's

time to go to sleep.

The Chinese Medical Asso-ciation, an official body repre-senting doctors, said in 2007that China would no longertransplant organs from exe-cuted prisoners except for theirimmediate relatives, earlier re-ports said.

In 2009 Huang said therights of death-row inmateswere respected and writtenconsent from prisoners was re-quired before their organscould be harvested, the ChinaDaily said at the time.

But Huang admitted thatexecuted prisoners were "def-initely not a proper source fororgan transplants".

International human rightsgroups have long accusedChina of harvesting organsfrom executed prisoners fortransplant without the consentof the prisoner or their family-- charges the government hasdenied.

Amnesty InternationalChina researcher SarahSchafer said Huang's latestcomments suggested "nothingmuch has changed".

"We feel that this lack ofprogress is quite chilling,"Schafer told AFP. "There's noway a prisoner facing execu-tion can give meaningful con-sent."

BEIJING (AFP) - Executedprisoners were still the mainsource of organs used in trans-plant operations in China dueto the lack of voluntary dona-tions, a top health official wasquoted saying this week.

China has long vowed to re-duce its reliance on death-rowinmates for organs, but highdemand and a chronic short-age of donations meant theyremained a key source, theLegal Daily quoted ViceHealth Minister Huang Jiefuas saying.

Huang reportedly made theremarks on the sidelines of thecountry's annual parliamentarysession in Beijing where about3,000 delegates from acrossthe country have gathered for10 days of meetings.

China banned the trade inhuman organs in 2007 and twoyears later began rolling out anationwide donation system, but demand for organ trans-plants still far exceeds supplyin the country of 1.3 billionpeople.

About 10,000 transplantsare carried out annually, but anestimated 1.3 million peopleare waiting for transplants, state media said previously, opening the door to the illegalsale of organs and forced do-nations.

This NASA image released March 8, 2012, taken in ultra-violet, visible and red light by Hubble's Wide Field Cam-era 3, spans about 100 light-years. The nebula is closeenough to Earth that Hubble can resolve individual stars, giving astronomers important information about thestars' birth and evolution. This massive, young stellargrouping, called R136, is only a few million years old andresides in the 30 Doradus Nebula, a turbulent star-birthregion in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxyof the Milky Way. There is no known star-forming regionin the Milky Way Galaxy as large or as prolific as 30 Do-radus.Many of the diamond-like icy blue stars are amongthe most massive stars known. Several of them are 100times more massive than our sun. These hefty stars aredestined to pop off, like a string of firecrackers, as su-pernovas in a few million years. These observations weretaken October 20-27, 2009. The blue color is light fromthe hottest, most massive stars; the green from the glowof oxygen; the red from fluorescing hydrogen.

Navi Pillay, from SouthAfrica, the UN's High Com-missioner for Human Rights, said for her part that the exclu-sion of women from politicsand the economy remained thenorm around the world.

Official statistics show thatwomen held just 19.3 percentof parliamentary seats aroundthe world last year, she said.

And on the economic front, just 12 of the world's top 500businesses are led by women, she added.

Speaking in Rabat, MicheleBachelet, a former president ofChile who now heads UNWomen, called for greaterequality, especially in thecountryside where inequalitybetween men and women is"most marked".

"It's in rural areas thatwomen and girl face most dis-parities and barriers," she toldreporters during a trip to Mo-rocco.

"One person in four world-wide is a woman or girl livingin the countryside, and work-ing long hours for low wagesor no wages," according toBachelet who was appointedlast year to head the newly-cre-ated United Nations Entity forGender Equality and the Em-powerment of Women.

GENEVA (AFP) - UNhuman rights chief Navi Pil-lay on Thursday called forwomen to play a greater rolein global leadership, warn-ing that failure to tap theirimmense potential comes "atour own peril".

"I call on governments, community leaders andheads of families around theworld to recognise, ac-knowledge and tap into theenormous potential ofwomen to positively impactthe world around them," saidPillay in a statement mark-ing International Women'sDay.

High Commissioner forHuman Rights Pillay citedUN statistics showing that asof last year, women heldonly 19.3 per cent of seats insingle or lower houses ofparliament worldwide.

She noted that only 12 ofthe Fortune 500 companieshave women at the top.

At the same time, she saidwomen in rural areas pro-duce 60 to 80 per cent of thefood in developing coun-tries, while rarely havingrights to the land they culti-vate.

Pillay quoted UN Foodand Agriculture Organisa-tion figures showing that forevery 100 land owners glob-ally, only 20 are women.

"With too few womenleaders in politics, and woe-fully insufficient numbers ofwomen leaders in industry, women are not taking part indecisive discussions on howto respond to global crises,"said Pillay.

"Such exclusion is at ourown peril -- the refusal toembrace gender equality hasled to many scourges, onetragic example being the fe-rocious spread ofHIV/AIDS," she warned.

women in the EU is just as im-portant as balanced budgets,"she said against a backgroundof roaring public deficits thathave threatened the stability ofthe euro.

In Europe, three women areheads of government -- in Ger-many, Denmark, and Slovakia-- while men hold two thirds ofthe seats in the European par-liament.

In national parliaments,Sweden has most women --44.7 percent -- while Hungaryhas just 8.8 percent.

Several hundred womendemonstrated in Sarajevo infavour of greater female repre-sentation in politics.

Quotas say women shouldhold at least 40 percent ofelected posts in Bosnia, but thefigure is just 17 percent, ac-cording to the demonstrators.

In Spain, trade unions andwomen's organisations ex-pressed concern that the currenteconomic crisis, associatedwith forced savings in publicspending, was having a nega-tive impact on equal pay forwomen.

The federation of progres-sive women said equalityshould not be "an extra" whenthe country fell on hard times.

In Tunis, several thousandwomen demonstrated outsideparliament to warn against anyattempt by the new Islamist-dominated government to cur-tail their rights.

"I've come to tell our electedleaders that the rights ofTunisian women must be writ-ten into the Constitution," saidJelila Bellalouna, a religiousteacher.

Smith capped a 9-0 Hawksspurt with a three-pointer togive Atlanta an 80-77 lead with3:29 to play.

BRASILIA (AFP) - Brazilaccepted FIFA's apologiesover the World Cup 2014'kick up the backside' contro-versy on Thursday, pavingthe way for President DilmaRousseff to meet world foot-ball chief Sepp Blatter.

"The federal governmentaccepts FIFA's apology andexpects that this will not hap-pen again," said a sports min-istry statement.

FIFA general secretaryJerome Valcke had caused amajor rift last week when hesaid the organisers of the2014 showpiece needed a"kick up the backside" to sal-vage various projects that hadfallen behind schedule.

Sports minister Aldo Re-belo said he had sent two let-ters on Thursday to FIFA --one to FIFA president Blatterand the other to Valcke.

In them, it was stated thatPresident Rousseff wouldmeet Blatter, although a datehas yet to be confirmed.

Blatter had personally saidsorry to the Brazilian govern-ment for the affair on Tues-day, one day after Valcke hadbeen similarly contrite.

FIFA have for months ex-pressed concern in varyingdegrees over the extent towhich preparations -- renova-tion or construction of stadi-ums, as well as infrastructureprojects -- are on track for thefirst World Cup in Brazilsince 1950.

Valcke said he profoundlyregretted that an incorrect in-

terpretation of his commentshad triggered such an angryresponse from the host coun-try.

"I would like to presentmy apologies to everyonewho was offended by mycomments," said Valcke, aFrench national.

He explained that inFrench, the phrase "se donnerun coup de pied aux fesses"(to give someone a kick upthe backside) only meant "topick up the pace". The trans-lation into Portuguese used astronger expression, headded.

"I don't understand whythings are not moving. Thestadiums are not on scheduleanymore and why are a lot ofthings late?" Valcke had saidlast Friday.

Meanwhile LegendaryBrazilian striker Ronaldo ad-mitted Wednesday that FIFAchief Jerome Valcke wasright to highlight the prob-lems plaguing organisers ofthe 2014 World Cup in thecountry.

"Valcke has already apol-ogised to the Brazilian peo-ple. The way he made hiscriticisms was regrettable, but that is not to say that hewasn't right," Ronaldo toldBandeirantes TV in SaoPaulo.

"Brazil is late in infra-structure work, there are a lotof things which are behindschedule," added Ronaldo, who is a high-profile memberof the organising committee.
