Reflection on Today’s Readings:

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...

Second Sunday of Lent - Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. St. Paul reminds us that God Himself “did not spare His own Son.” Are my gifts to the Lord

— of my resources, of my time, of myself — also sacrificial? Romans 8:32

Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat., Mar. 10th & Sun., Mar. 11th, 2012 - Third Sunday of Lent!

We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all Masses next Sunday: Reading 1 Reading 2 Gospel: Ex 20:1-17 (29B) 1 Cor 1:22-25 Jn 2:13-25

^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call the Rectory Office at 310- 670-2243.

FOCUS: Faith gives us the strength to respond to life’s difficulties with grace, compassion and kindness - Life is filled with situations that can try and test us. Such situations can either bring out the best in us or the worst. We have only to look to recent storms, earthquakes or other disasters and remember how people responded in their aftermath for examples of both. What seems to have made the difference for many was faith in God. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In today’s first reading, God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his only son. Abraham obeys God, but his son is spared. Abraham’s faithfulness is greatly rewarded. The second reading reminds us that if God is for us, who can be against us. In the Gospel, Jesus is transfigured and identified by God as His beloved Son.

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

To receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, please call the Rectory Office at 310-670-2243.

Dear Parishioners, First, I hope that your experience of the grace of Lent has been spiritually uplifting and has begun to rebuild your own personal confidence in our fight against sinfulness. At Easter, one of the

questions asked as we renew our Baptismal Promises is "Do you reject the glamour of evil and refuse to be mastered by sin?" In examining our lives with rigorous candor, in seeking greater personal integrity, in developing genuine humility we are able to perceive the meaning of true discipleship in the Lord Jesus. This is what ultimately allows us to be "transfigured" along with Jesus and opens our minds to a correct insight of our purpose and orients us to future glory. Second, I want to thank all who are working so hard for our Parish Ball. Please pray for the success of this very important event. All our parishioners are invited to come share in a beautiful evening that celebrates Christian community. The Ball will be on Saturday, March 10. Lastly, I simply would like to thank Father Tom, Monsignor Vadakin, and Monsignor Cox for the incredible support and devotion that they provide for our parish and for me personally. It is a privilege to serve the Lord in this community of faith, and to be surrounded not only with their priestly example, but also with the talent, the generosity, and the conviction of love and faith from all of you. Devotedly, Father Gabe

Ministry sends us beyond the parish…

FACT OF LIFE Court Upholds Pharmacists' Rights A federal court in Tacoma, Washington, struck down today a law that required pharmacists to

dispense the morning-after pill in violation of their religious beliefs. The court held that the law violates the First Amendment right to free exercise of religion, a statement from The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which co-represented the plaintiffs, explained. "Today's decision sends a very clear message: No individual can be forced out of her profession solely because of her religious beliefs," said Luke Goodrich, deputy national litigation director at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. "If the state allows pharmacies to refer patients elsewhere for economic, business, and convenience reasons, it has to allow them to refer for reasons of conscience." The plaintiffs in the case were a family-owned pharmacy and two individual pharmacists who refused in conscience to dispense Plan B ("the morning-after pill") or Ella ("the week-after pill"). In 2007, the Washington State Board of Pharmacy passed new regulations making it illegal to refer patients to neighboring pharmacies for reasons of conscience, despite allowing them to refer patients elsewhere for a wide variety of business, economic, or convenience reasons. (Zenit.org, February 22, 2012). Prayer for Life: O God, from generation to generation, you have called your people to witness to life amidst a culture of death. Now it is our turn. Prepare me. Send me. Use me. I am eager to do my part. Stir your people everywhere to take up this great work. Amen.

Lent 4.5 takes advantage of people's desire to do something more for Lent: encouraging participants to pray and learn about ways to protect God's creation, embrace Gospel justice, and nurture their own spirituality. The seven-week Lenten program provides us with a new approach to the traditional Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Check out the video (scroll down to bottom of their website: http://www.earthandspiritcenter.org/lent45/) explaining the program, and also on https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lent-45/137579142922958. DURING LENT (2012) - The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations. ABSTINENCE – A penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE – In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are

allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA - We are on a 40-day Lenten

journey. This is an excellent time to contemplate the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. An easy Lenten practice that will help you grow in your faith is to listen each week to one of the Lighthouse Catholic Media CD's. You can listen while you're driving, exercising, cleaning up the kitchen or working in the garage. It sounds simple, but the results will be amazing! At the back of the Church, you will see the display, and you can pick up a CD each week. We ask for a $3 cash donation so we can continue to bring new titles all year long. Or, take 7 CD's for a $20 cash donation. Please stop by and pick up some food for your Lenten journey!

Ministry in Community …

Road to Priesthood involves a rigorous formation process - Seminary formation involves much more than academic study. Prior to ordination, a candidate for priesthood goes

through a lengthy evaluation period, including an internship during which he lives in a rectory and works with priests, staff and parishioners. During this time, the candidate is judged as to his suitability to be a priest. No one is ordained unless the staff of St. John’s Seminary, including the lay faculty and formation advisers, concludes that the candidate has attained an emotional, psychological and sexual maturity appropriate for his age and for the celibate life of a priest. Living Faith for Kids… “The Lord’s messenger called him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. “Do not lay

your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him.” - Genesis 22:11-12 In this strange and mysterious tale of faith, Abraham raises a knife to sacrifice his son, Isaac, but God stops him. What faith Abraham had to be willing to do what God asked him: first, to sacrifice his son, then, to stop as the last minute. Abraham is called our “Father in Faith,” ready to do whatever God asked him. Let us pray that we might grow in faith so that we will be ready to do whatever God asks of us. Lord, strengthen me to do your will.
