PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Quilters," With the flowers coming up everywhere and all the sun we’ve had lately, my mind has been in the garden, not on writing newsletters, thus I find myself with little inspiration as I try to get this in right under the deadline wire. Deadlines loom in the sewing room too, with more and more days calling me outside to weed, or tempt Jack Frost by putting out starts, instead of working on quilts I’ve committed to do. Those of you who also love gardening know what I’m talking about.

" Don’t know about your 2015 Resolutions, but mine are not getting done quickly. All those UFO’s I was going to continue finishing? Well, now there is a quilt to finish designing and sew (what was I thinking?!?) for hire. So it jumps to the front of the line. And the Challenge quilt tie packet sits there, certainly a priority over UFO’s from the past. And so it goes.

" Speaking of tie packets, there are still some available. And there is Quilt County coming up, so lots for us to do over summer! Hopefully there will be some rainy days to refill our reservoirs, give us snow in the mountains, and a welcome day to stay cozy inside, working in our sewing rooms. Sheri Puckette

(Nancy Bryant continued)" The authors have used innovative color combinations with examples of both traditional and contemporary quilts to show how color theory pertains to quilt making. They stress that there are no foolproof methods, but that good color work comes from trying different combinations before settling on a final palette. Nancy will use selected examples from this book to illustrate her talk. So plan to sit back and stretch your imagination as you look at this exploration of color. Harriet Plumley

COFFEE CREEK DONATIONS" Our January speaker, Chris Irwin, was just astounded at the generosity of the Marys River Quild Members. Your donated fabric and quilting supplies filled Chris's car literally to the brim. Not a speck of space was left in the trunk, the back seat, or the passenger seat. And, Judy Juntunen's car was full as well. Judy made a special trip to Newberg to deliver many more boxes of fabric. All of that plus the donation of a sewing machine to be refurbished and given to a lucky young woman when she is released from prison!  Quilters are a very sharing group and this wonderful support of a fabulous program certainly proved that to be true. Thank you, Everyone! Jan Andrews McKirdie

For all our new members and those not familiar with the guild library, all of our books are listed on our website by author and title and with key search words (this last is in progress). http://www.marysriverquiltguild.org There is also a book cart at the meeting with all of the most current books and many more. Members can check out books for a two month period. During the year we typically add around 18 new books with a mix of techniques to suit everyone. New books are usually new releases so we keep current with up to date techniques and ideas. If you have any book or DVD suggestions please call or email Karen Gottschlich [email protected] or 541-829-9266. Please be sure to include your name on any request, so that I can get the new item to you first.

Blocks of the Month" Thank you to all who made blocks for the Block of the Month program the last two months. I truly hope you had fun. " Block of the Month is so much more fun when lots of people make the blocks and so far we have had many blocks made. " Remember, when you make the BOM and bring it to guild you have the chance to take all of that months blocks home plus your name will be added to the drawing in November

for all the gift certificates that have accumulated during the year. (For every 12 blocks that come into the guild meeting a $10.00 gift certificate from a local fabric store will be added to the pot. The more you play the more chances you have to win. But remember, it truly only takes one.) She"ey Berryman

Quilt County – Fall 2015 " Quilt County is a group of shows throughout our county.  The reason this has been successful for over twenty years is because members are willing to share their quilts. " What is needed at this time are individuals, or a small group of people that are willing to gather quilts for a show, make signage for the show (we all want to know who has made the quilt) and work with the store owner in helping make the show happen.  Shows are sometimes two day shows or month plus long shows – whatever works out best for everyone. It is fun to do.  " Some of you may not feel you can put together a show – pick a theme and announce it at guild and you would be amazed at who has a quilt that they would be interested and willing to share for Quilt County.  " Questions, please feel free to contact me and I can walk you through the steps to make it happen.  Marcia Gilson  [email protected]

Silent Auctions at the Meetings " We will continue to have a silent auction table at our meetings. The Scholarship and Service Committees are the two groups that benefit from the auction besides you as a guild member. The two groups are alternating months on when they have items set up. The silent auctions end just prior to the programs starting and successful bidders may pick up their new treasures at the end of the meeting.  So as a member, feel free to check out the tables and make your bids. You are also welcome to bring in useable items from your own stash to donate to the guild for the auctions. Currently I have two floor frames that have been donated that I will not be hauling into the building but will gladly send you pictures or you can come over and see at my house. They are both capable of managing up to a king size quilt. Thank you for all of the donations so far –" " " " " Marcia Gilson [email protected]

Challenge Packets" Challenge packets are still available for the amazing price of $5. See Judy Juntunen for information. [email protected]

Secret SistersOur group is off to another wonderful year of

games, sharing, laughs and friendships. In January we met to draw our new Secret Pal for

1015. During the meeting our many knitters shared some recent projects and their own thoughts about knitting. Wendi Bracken dropped rather "not too subtle hints " about really wanting a pair of knitted socks from her Secret Sis..... (which seem to be what a lot of the gals knit a lot of).

Our February meeting started with a game, sharing UFO's, and then 3 members shared current quilting projects and a few words about what direction they seem to be taking in the quilting world.

Oh, and Wendi reminded us that she would love to have a pair of Hand Knitted Socks from her Secret Sister.  Now that seems to have worked because last week she received a sock in the mail..hand knitted.... but only one foot's worth!  Hmmmmm!

Our next gathering will be on March 19. It will be our annual Spring Fling party. I, personally , am looking forward to the Jelly Beans! (wonder if another sock for Wendi will appear?)" "
