In case you are too busy actually wor-king, I would like to tell you that theErst day of spring was on Tuesday. Ad-

ditionally, I recommend that you set yourclocks forward this Sunday, 25 March at2 a.m. for Daylight Savings Time (DST).

Bis week’s word is “exercise” or “fareginnastica” in Italian. I notice a lot of folksrunning and walking around base, the wea-ther is improving and the spring PhysicalFitness Assessment or PFA is just aroundthe corner. I encourage everyone to makethe eCort to get out and exercise. It wasgreat to see the turnout for this year’s Base2 Base Run. I miei complimenti (my com-pliments) to MWR. Be Base 2 Base serieswas an excellent and well-run exercisevenue this year and is in line with the Secre-tary of the Navy’s 21st Century Sailor andMarine initiative designed to maximize Sai-lor and Marine personal readiness, to main-tain the resiliency of the force, and to honethe most combat eCective force in the hi-story of the Department of the Navy.

Readiness and resiliency provide ano-ther example of this week’s word, althoughslightly diCerent in Italian, “esercitezione”.We just completed an exercise called Re-

liant Defense 2012 and I must say Iwas pleased with the performanceof the NASSIG community, speci-Ecally, the Erst-responders, Ere andemergency services, security per-sonnel and NCIS. I understand thatsome may have been inconvenien-ced by the closing of the NAS I gateand the requirement to shelter inplace, but both measures are possi-ble and even likely during an actualcrisis and it is important that thecommunity and the base prepareand train in a simulated environ-ment that closely resembles whatwe expect in real crises. As we movethrough the spring and summermonths, be aware that these trai-ning opportunities will continueand we use these exercises to en-sure your safety.

Lastly, I ask each of you to lookaround our base and ask…“what can I doto make Sigonella beHer?” I have noticedbase organizations walking the grounds andpicking up trash. I’m thankful for that andI encourage the entire community to followsuit. Be appearance of the base reFects di-

rectly on the Navy and all who live here.Take some time and show some SigonellaPRIDE.

Enjoy the spring, the improving weatherand remember to think and act safely.Buona Giornata!

NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Cmdr. Eric Vosler

As designated by the U.S. Navy Memo-rial foundation (USNMF), 2012 is theYear of the Chief.

Each year, the USNMF spotlight anaval group similar to commands recogni-zing individual achievements with the Sai-lor of the Year award. USNMF selection isbased on leadership and the impact thegroup has on the U.S. Navy and U.S. CoastGuard community. Past groups that havebeen recognized include: SEALS, SeaBees, Navy Medicine and Supply.

"Be Year of the Chief distinction is anhonor and humbling," said Naval Air Sta-tion (NAS) Sigonella Command MasterChief David Graham. "However, it is nota time of rest. We have to constantly men-tor and grow our Sailors in order to meetthe needs of our Navy and our nation."

As every chief knows, a lot is expectedfrom the chief 's mess during the Year ofthe Chief and every year.

"Every chief should strive to be the bestchief they ever met. We should demandnothing but the best from our mess andour Sailors," said AFCM Mike Padro, Air-craG Intermediate Maintenance Deta-

chment (AIMD) Sigonella senior enlistedleader. " I expect nothing less than solidleadership. I want the mess to live up to thephrase 'ask the chief.' Be only way we cando that is being actively engaged, beingmore visible and walking the deck-plates."

Graham and Padro encourage chiefs tocontinue to focus on the Guiding Princi-ples: deck-plate leadership, institutionaland technical expertise, professionalism, character, loyalty, active communication, and sense of heritage.

"Our Guiding Principles not only guideus but unite us and maintain us," said Padro.

In the changing times of the U.S. Navy, the Guiding Priciples and the role of achief are even more important.

"It is harder today to stay Navy," saidGraham. "Our Navy is only retaining thebest and the brightest. So as chiefs, wemust prepare our Sailors to become futurechiefs and commanding oDcers. We mustdo this while simultaneously trainingthem to be more competitive for the civi-lian workforce. One day our Sailors willbecome the leaders of our future Navy.Bey are worth the investment."

In celebration of the Year of theChief, Naval Air Station (NAS)Sigonella Chief Pe-y O,cers

Together Manfredi andBrite, played by Lt. James Shefchik, visited the cla-ssrooms to teach tips on saving energy.

“It was great to see the reactions from the chil-dren at DoDDs”, said Manfredi. “Any time youhave a cartoonish Fgure such as Brite, kids seem toget a kick out of it. It also helps inGuence them andin turn they pass on what they’ve learned to their

parents. Dey’ll let mom or dad know, 'Hey! YouleH the light on in the kitchen! Dat’s wastingenergy'.”

Manfredi emphasized the importance of conser-ving energy, especially in today’s economic climate.

“De reasons for energy conservation aware-ness are preIy obvious. It just makes Fnancialsense. You can ease some of the strain from yourpersonal budget," said Manfredi. "De Navy hasthese programs in place to make sailors aware thatthis is one of the easiest ways to save money fortheir own personal situations and for the Navy aswell. Dat’s crucial these days.”

On, Friday, March 16, Marines fromSpecial Marine Air Ground Task ForceTwelve (SPMAGTF-12) graduatedfrom the Command Sponsored Corpo-rals Course during a ceremony held atthe NAS I theater.

De purpose of the CorporalsCourse is to provide students the basicknowledge and skills necessary to besuccessful small-unit leaders. De intentis to instill a feeling of conFdence intheir leadership abilities. It is the foun-dation in the development of new lea-dership among the NCO ranks.

Sgt.Maj. Patrick Llamas, corporalscourse director, emphasized the impor-tance of the course. “Essentially, it’s de-veloping small unit leaders and passingthe baton. I equate it to a relay race inour careers. No maIer how fast somerunners are, it’s about the hand-oE. Ifyou miss that hand-oE and don’t prac-tice the liIle things, then something gets

missed and the baton gets dropped. Dat’s what we’re doing here, passing onthe legacy and traditions of the MarineCorps and giving them that conFdenceto lead Marines when they get back theirindividual units.”

De course included a total of 144.5hours of instruction based on direct appli-cation of learned skills. De class was desi-gned to move away from traditionalclassroom instruction of rote memoriza-tion and standardized testing, which hasproven to be ineEective in the past. It in-volved everything from administrative du-ties to responsibilities on the baIleFeld.

One of the graduates, Cpl ChristineHatFeld, gave her perspective on howthe class has helped her understand hernew role in the Marines. “It’s a greatcourse. It steps beyond just following or-ders and doing what our superiors needus to do into the leadership role thatthey now occupy and leading other Ma-rines. We now have to step up and takethe leadership position. Dat’s the pur-pose of the Corporals Course.”

Picture yourself in the following situation: afriend happens to introduce you to a person withamazing connections to a job you have alwayswanted and you are left scrambling to find a piece ofpaper, a pen, a pencil, a cocktail napkin, ANY-THING so you can write down your name and num-ber in order to provide contact information for thisindividual to get in touch with you in the future.Does this sound like a professional way to network?Hopefully, your answer is “no."Do you really think someone is going to remem-

ber you in a positive light as “that guy who scribbleddown his contact information on his stained dinnernapkin with a crayon he snagged from a stranger’skid?” Probably not. Have no fear, we have a solution for you! People

often think they need to already be employed inorder to have a business card. They're mistaken. Youcan make a business card for yourself that acts asyour personal networking card. This card allows youto always have a reference on hand to give to any po-tential new contacts you meet at job fairs, variousnetworking events or people you run into randomlythat just so happen to have valuable information foryour current job search. You never know who youmight meet and what job opportunities your con-nections might lead to, so help yourself make themost out of any networking situation by making apersonal networking card. Here is an example for you to reference. The first

side lists your name, phone number and email address.

Note the professional email address – no crazynicknames, no symbols – just simple and straight-forward. An address that includes your first and lastname (or first initial and last name) is usually best.If you do not already have one, it's a good idea to setup a separate email account specifically for your jobsearch – this way, you can ensure that you do not ac-cidentally delete an important work-related emailwhile scanning your personal messages and sendingthem to the trash folder. In addition, having a sepa-rate email account for your job search enables you toalways know when you have received new job-re-lated emails while also managing employment con-tacts and multiple job applications. The second side of your personal networking

card should list three to five major accomplishments, awards or employment-related highlights:

For example, you could list that you have six yearsof supervisory experience, hold a degree in engineer-ing or are a team player who works well in stressfulsituations. The possibilities are endless. “Stava BaQi Matri dolorosa Iuxta Crocella lacrimòsacomu pentébbati Nliu” (At the cross her station keeping,Mary stood in sorrow weeping when her Son was cru-ciNed).

Ke words of this mournful medieval chant, which issung on Good Friday to remember the sorrow of Maryat the foot of the cross, describe one of the most tou-ching days of SeQimana Santa, (Holy Week) duringwhich, street processions and ceremonies are organizedin most Sicilian towns. Every year, Holy Week, lastingfrom Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, is one of the mostprominent events in the religious life of Enna and Sicily.Street processions featuring decorated religious Ooats, representing the Passion of Christ, are carried out acrossthe island. Elaborate life-size statues of Jesus and the Vir-gin Mary, which are mounted on top of richly decoratedOoats, are accompanied by penitents who mourn thePassion of Christ and rejoice for his resurrection.

Enna’s SeQimana Santa celebrations come straightfrom the Spanish Catholic traditions. Spaniards ruled Si-cily from the 15th to the 18th century. Today, just as ithappens in Andalucia and Latin America, processionsfeaturing traditional costumes still show the intensity ofthe devotees’ mysticism. Good Friday is a day of peni-tence. Every year, thousands of visitors swarm Enna tosee the fervent pilgrims belonging to diLerent city’sConfraternite (confraternities). Key walk slowly in pro-cession wearing colorful robes and hoods through thecobblestone streets of the historic center while townbands play mournful melodies.

Brotherhoods are citizen’s societies similar to medie-val guilds, which date back to the period of the Spanishrule. Key keep alive the religious heritage of the city.Over the centuries, these associations have been taskedwith organizing religious and charitable activities. In thepast, they played a leading role in the social life of thetown providing spiritual and material assistance to thepoor and the sick and even to the ones sentenced todeath. In 1740, there were 34 confraternities.

Today, there are only 15 and they include Confrati(members of the confraternities) belonging to all ranksand classes with the only exception ofwomen. In thepast, confraternities were mainly composed of sulfur mi-ners and farmers. Ke color of the robes and the mantelworn during the processions has a particular meaningthat can be either related to the cult of their own patronsaint or to the role that they played in the past in town.

On Friday, Apr. 6, Enna Good Friday or Venerdì

Santo processions begin at 4:30 p.m. with the “Confra-ternity of the Passion” mournful parade leading onceagain the procession while carrying the 33 symbols andthe insignia related to Jesus martyrdom that are called“Misteri.” Some among those include the cross, thepurse with thirty pieces of silver, the crown, the lantern, the rooster, the nails, and the scourges, jug of water, glo-ves, etc.

Kis emotional procession, which leaves from theChurch of Saint Leonardo, is headed towards theDuomo or cathedral. As the confraternity proceeds inpenitence along via Roma through the narrow streets ofthe city, the other fourteen Confraternite join this mour-nful religious parade. Ke procession follows a deNniteorder. Brotherhoods parade from the most recent to theoldest. Over 2,500 hooded and silent penitents’ walk to-wards Church of Our Lady of Sorrows hosting a statuedepicting the Virgin Mary.

Ken, this statue is taken to the cathedral where anUrna (urn) containing a life-size statue of dead Christ, was previously placed. At 7 p.m., the procession leavesfrom the cathedral and reaches the Church of St. Paolininear the cemetery, where a benediction is given with theReliquary cross, which, according to the tradition con-tains a thorn from the crown of Christ.

Eventually, the procession returns to the Cathedral.Later, the two statues are taken back to the churches.

On April 8 (Easter Sunday), in the morning, Pasquais celebrated at the church of S. Salvatore at 10 a.m. Laterin the evening, Paci (peace), a ceremony symbolizingthe encounter of resurrected Christ with the VirginMary, begins at 6 p.m. Two statues depicting Jesus andhis mother are carried on the shoulders of confraternitymembers and taken from the churches of S. Salvatoreand S. Giuseppe to piazza Mazzini where the Paci iseventually staged. As soon as Christ appears, the blackveil covering the statue of the Lady of Sorrows comesdown. At that point, the statues run toward each otherand aPer that, are taken inside the Cathedral.

Sunday, April 15, marks the day of the melancholic“Spartenza” ceremony, which takes place in piazza Maz-zini. Ke two statues, which participated in the Paci onEaster day, are taken back to the churches where they areusually kept. Ke statue of Christ goes back to church ofSS. Salvatore, and the Virgin Mary one is taken Churchof San Giuseppe. For more information, detailed sche-dules and guided tours’ opportunities call Enna TouristOMce at 0935-529111.

Holy Week in Enna)e mournful Good Friday procession in Enna commemorates Jesus Christ’s cruci*xion and is one of the most signi*cantreligious events of the Holy Week. On April. 6 , penitents belonging to city’s religious brotherhoods perform sorrowfulparades throughout the historic center.

Knowing the importanceof food in the Sicilianculture, it should be no

surprise that home cooks andpastry chefs get very busy du-ring Easter. As the Sicilian sa-ying goes "Aviri cchiu' chiLari dilu furnu di Pasqua," (be busierthan an oven during Easter),during the Easter holiday, Sici-lians bake a lot of scrumptiouspastries that are still preparedaccording to secret ancient reci-pes handed down from Siciliannuns and Moorish bakers.Kere are a wide variety of Sici-lian treats which are basicallymade with eggs, Oour, almonds, candied fruits and ricoQacheese.

Although chocolate Eastereggs, which come in assorted sizes, are big sellers in Sicily, traditionaldolci (treats) are still very popular onthe island. Among the most famoustreats there is the "Cuddura ccu l'ovu"- a cookie with hard-boiled eggs pla-ced in the middle.

Ke marzipan "Agneddu Pasquali"(which in Sicilian means Easterlamb) is undoubtedly the most pecu-liar Easter cake. It comes from a Je-wish tradition and it is made withsugar and clove paste. It is shaped asthe "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God),whose bronze prototype is in Paler-mo's National Museum. Ke lamb isalways set in a grassy backgroundwith a banner placed in the back. Kebanner is a small reproduction of themedieval symbol of the French kingswho ruled Sicily. Ke tantalizing"Agneddu di Pasta di Zuccaru e Jaro-fulu," which is still made by hand withsugar and clove paste is a preQy tradi-tional variety of Easter lambs. Kemost valuable lambs are indeed the"Agneddi di Pasta Riali," or marzipanlambs, made with ground almondsand sugar, covered with icing andpainted like the Martorana fruit.Kese particular lambs are oPen Nlledwith citron jam and are a specialty ofthe towns of Erice and Acireale wherethey're made close to life size. PastaRiali in Sicilian means royal paste be-cause it was made in the kitchens ofthe great nobles and nuns of the Mar-torana Convent in Palermo.

Another essential Easter cake is"Cassata," (photo above), one of the

world's most famous Sicilian pastries. It is made with ricoQa, coated withicing and decorated with candiedfruit. Cassata is also available in smal-ler and diLerently shaped versionsnamed "Cassateddi." Eating Cassatais a must for any good Sicilian as thesaying goes, "Tintu cu nun manciacassati la matina ri Pasqua," which inSicilian means: "Bad is the one whodoesn't eat Cassate on Easter mor-ning."

Cassata was Nrst prepared in 998at the palace of Emir Yussuf in Pa-lermo during the Arab rule. Its namederives from "Quas'at," which in Ara-bic means: round bowl. Historiansbelieve that this cake was prepared ina round bowl 33 cm in diameter andits inventor used all the delicaciesavailable at the time.

Over the centuries, this cake be-came so popular that in 1575, the Ec-clesiastical Council of Mazara(province of Trapani) banned its pro-duction in convents and monasteriesto prevent the nuns, who were veryskilled and popular confectioners, from being disturbed during the HolyWeek's prayers.

According to scholars, the Nrst pro-totype of modern Cassata, which in-cluded sophisticated decorations withcandied fruits, was prepared in the se-cond half of the 16th century by thenuns of the Valverde Monastery in Pa-lermo. "ViscoQa di casa." is anothertype of Sicilian Easter cookies worthmentioning. Key are traditionalhome baked biscuits that are still pre-pared according to ancient recipes.

"It's an important acknowledgement that sprang forth spontane-ously from the public," said Placido RizzoGo's nephew, who is namedaFer his uncle.

MaEa boss Luciano Liggio was tried for RizzoGo's abduction andmurder but acquiGed for insuDcient evidence. A shepherd boy whowitnessed the murder, Giuseppe Letizia, was killed by the MaEa. AGer a long weekend, Sigonel-lans will sometimes notice that theirtap water is somewhat discolored.Cis discoloration is completely har-mless, caused by rust in the water pi-ping due to pipe corrosion. Coughit may seem or smell dirty, the con-centration of impurities still meetsdrinking water standards. Runningthe water for a minute or so will re-move the discoloration, but it is per-fectly safe and potable regardless ofhow it looks. Ce real risk of the pipecorrosion is that it can lead to piperuptures, blockages, and decreasesin water pressure to facilities. FromSeptember through November of2011, NAVFAC contracted CDMto perform an engineering study onNaval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella'swater distribution network to eva-luate corrosion. Ce objective was toidentify the cause of corrosion in thepiping and determine the appro-priate solution.

A common corrosion mecha-nism in water distribution piping isa chemical reaction between thepipe and its surrounding environ-ment causing the material to wea-ken. In buried pipes, corrosionoGen takes place in the pipe inte-rior and is manifested by areas ofdiscolored, briHle material andscale deposits. Ce quality of thewater, measured by pH, conducti-vity, dissolved materials, hardness, etc., plays a key role in the rate ofcorrosion – much in the same waythat the rate at which a car will rust

varies depending on the climate. In galvanized pipes, like NAS Si-

gonella's older, water distributionnetwork, a protective zinc oxidelayer protects the underlying steelto prevent rapid corrosion. Ciszinc layer, however, can becomecorroded if the right (or perhapswrong) conditions exist. In 2005,the existing electrodialysis watertreatment plants on base were re-placed with a reverse osmosis plant.Ce newer, more energy eDcientsystem removes a larger percentageof the minerals from the groundwater than the old system previou-sly did. As a result, without the mi-nerals, the treated water has agreater capacity to remove the zinclayer and cause corrosion.

Ce majority of the water mainshave been replaced over the yearswith high density polyethylene(HDPE) piping that does not cor-rode; however, many of the lateralpipes leading into the buildings re-main as galvanized steel. PublicWorks is coordinating a project toprovide additional treatment in thewater plant to address and mitigatecorrosion concerns. Ce water tre-atment will slightly increase waterhardness on base but will help pro-long the life of NAS Sigonella'swater distribution network. For thetime being, Public Works will standby to respond to water line breaks, patching and repairs to keep thewater Fowing in support of theHub of the Med.

On Saturday, March 17, NAS Sigonella held its an-nual Base 2 Base 7.6 mile run, the <nal run of the Base 2Base series.

Having just arrived in October, this was my <rst Base2 Base Run. It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day!Maybe from a runner’s perspective it did start out a li>lebit warm. But for me, having arrived here during the win-ter months and with all the foul weather we’ve had lately,it was a nice change. I actually got a li>le sunburned.

With right around 500 participants, it was a pheno-menal turnout. It was really great to see so many peoplecome out for an event like this.

;e post-race festivities were equally impressive.A=er coming through the <nishing chute, participantswere greeted with live music from Connections. A=er

catching their breath, ge>ing some water or Gatorade, participants could walk over and purchase a lunch.Green beer was even available. A=er all, the Base 2 BaseShamrock series race just happened to fall on St. Pa-trick’s Day.

;e overall atmosphere of the Base 2 Base Run wasfantastic and well organized. It reminded me of any otherrun I would have done back home in the states thanksto everyone that helped put this together.

According to MWR's Jaime Andrews, “;is year'sBase 2 Base Run was the biggest and best yet, thanks toall the volunteers, employees and participants.”

Race results and photos are available for viewingwww.facebook.com/mwrsigonella. Mark your calendarsfor the Mo>a Extreme Trail Run, Saturday, April 28.
