Now that our annual Club and unit seminar is under our belt, signifying the start of the Shrine year. We mark the continued uncertainty around parades and fundraising

opportunities. However, as we discussed at the seminar, there are some new and fun activities planned for this year.

As Illustrious Brother James Cash Penney, 33˚ turned the phrase, “It is always the start that requires the greatest effort”. Just as a competition level swimmer first had to learn how to swim before they could race, we begin building and planning these new opportunities.

Now, understanding that I am a horrible swimmer. I can only reflect on what I observed from my son’s journey and compare that to our own.

The beginning of any new undertaking involves that first step, where we flesh out the idea and decide to get in and work the project. Dipping our toe in per se. We look at the water, and decide to get in, experience what it is like while willing to learn how to move about in it. Similarly, we are looking at implementing these additional activities. The Hot Sands 5K, The Black-Tie Table Lodge, and the Haunted House are new and excitingly different events. Events that involve a lot of planning, learning, and work.

Now that we have decided to get in the water, we are learning how to implement

these new events. The swimmer’s technique is incredibly important. How they execute their butterfly stroke, start, and turns; learned over countless hours of practice and coaching. Likewise, our teams are reaching out to others that have done these events in the past, for coaching and inspiration. Working to improve on their plans, and perfect their execution.

“How can I help?”, you ask. Well, there are plenty of opportunities. The committees of each of these events have plenty of jobs that need to be filled. Reach out to them and offer your assistance in areas you have expertise or areas you are willing to learn. As our Ceremonial states, Shriners support our Temples of Mercy by giving of their time, talent, spirit, and means. You can find the committee contact information in their respective flyers, visiting our new and expanded osmanshriners.org website, the weekly Osman Blast, our Facebook page, or by contacting Doreen in the office. You can also continue to find information in our Chief Aide’s and Chief of Staff ’s articles.

And as we fling ourselves into these new events, as if launching ourselves off the starting block into the race, our excitement and willingness to work together will propel us forward to success.

“Change is vital, improvement the logical form of change.”, mused Illustrious Brother Penney. Thus, Osman continues to learn from each activity and evolve our efforts to

make every event fun and fulfilling.

Never forgetting that Fun and fellowship is core to who we are as Shriners, our Imperial Potentate James Smith reminds us “Fun in ‘21”! Let us enjoy every opportunity to engage with each other. Be it volunteering at one of the new events, sledding down a hill, playing virtual Bingo, running a 5k, working our wonderful circus, or breaking bread at dinner; continue sharing of our most precious commodity, our time, with one another.

And as we think of spending time with one another, let us continue to embody those great masonic principles of brotherly love and relief by extending our hand in friendship and assistance to each other. Reach out and befriend those new members of our gentle craft, email or call to check in on that Noble you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while, provide assistance by shoveling their drive, or running for groceries. Remind them we miss them, we wish them well, and can’t wait until we can meet again.

As the Tyler so eloquently shared with us, “Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again”. With a near mischievous air of excitement, I look forward to meeting again. Where I can once again share in that Joviality that we as Shriners are so famous.

May we continue to reflect the motto of our order, Robur et Furor, Strength and Fury..

Ryan Colligan called the seminar to order at 9:00.

Assistant Rabban, Jim Gratias discussed the use of the Shrine Pledge at all Shrine events as well as proper fez etiquette. It is important to follow such protocols at all Shrine events and community parades. The Shrine Pledge and Invocation were given after the Etiquette information.

The Osman Membership Team represented by Lloyd Cheney presented its goals and program for 2021. The goal is to go full throttle towards achieving Gold status this year. Prospective member events are being coordinated throughout Osman land pending COVID restrictions.

Assistant Rabban, Jim Gratias and insurance rep. Brett Boelter covered important insurance information for all clubs & units. Only paid members of a Shrine Temple with a current dues card are permitted to drive with motorized units. Insurance cards must be in your unit’s vehicle at all times. ID cards are currently with Doreen in the Osman office. All incidents must be reported to the office or to your Unit’s Divan Representative within 24 hours. Also, all drivers of parade equipment must provide copies of their driver’s license to the office. Finally, all drivers must have their dues paid before participating in a parade or they are not covered by insurance. Also, send your unit’s parade schedule to the office so it is on file.

Rose West made a presentation on behalf of the Osman Auxiliary. She thanked all of the Clubs and Units for over $21,000 in donations at the Parade of Glory even in a Pandemic year. Rose noted that anyone can join the Auxiliary, including men and those

without Shrine affiliation. She also reminded everyone of the Wine and Craft Beer Tasting date is TBD due to COVID. More information to come.

Circus Director, John Davenport & Chief Rabban Mark Galloway discussed the 2021 Osman Shrine Circus which will take place in November 2021 due to COVID. More information will be available in the near future. Advertising donations collected for 2020 will carry over into 2021. Contact John Davenport with questions. November 28th circus workers party will be by invitation only for those who volunteer to help.

Captain of the Guard, Paul M. Peterson and Second Ceremonial Master, Wiley Davis introduced the Osman Haunted House fundraising idea planned for weekends in October. The event will be called Nightmare at the Spur. Many volunteers will be needed to make this a success. All ideas are welcomed and should be directed to Wiley Davis.

Chief of Staff, Gary Winter discussed the upcoming parade schedule and mandatory unit attendance at Temple Parades. All parade units are expected to attend all temple parades. You need to be excused by the Potentate if your unit is unable to participate in a temple parade. In addition, captains and parade chairmen are expected to communicate with the Chief of Staff about how many Nobles and guests will be at the oasis after the parade. The Temple parade schedule will be finalized later this spring due to COVID.

Recorder PP Roger Robinson discussed safety protocols for units during parade season. Remember to

call the Recorder immediately if there is an accident while parading or any time a motorized unit is involved.

1st Ceremonial Master, Brian Miller and 2nd Ceremonial Master Wiley Davis discussed Osman’s Newspaper deadlines. All submissions must be in to Doreen no later than the 10th of the month. Include pictures with captions and names of people in the photos. Articles should be e-mailed to Doreen Lynch and copied to Wiley and Brian. Please use spell check and grammar check. Articles are limited to a half page.

2021 Parade to Glory requests will be sent to Club & Unit heads via email as soon as it is put together.

Al Christofk explained the Academy of Nobles and how Club & Units can donate to the fund and their donations remain ‘permanently restricted funds’ – donations to Potentate’s annual budget are based on value of the fund on Sept. 30th.

Recorder, PP Roger Robinson reminded Club & Unit heads that all annual reports are due to the office no later than March 15th. Also, remember to send your officer’s names/contact info to the office.

Oriental Guide, Ryan Colligan is the 2021 Divan contact for all Club & Unit needs. Contact him with any questions or concerns related to your Club or Unit. Outer Guard Eric Mundt offered his help and support to any motorized unit that may have mechanical issues that need to be fixed before parading. Contact him with your mechanical questions related to your motorized units.

Congratulation to III Sir Sean Gardiner and members of the Divan on their election to the Osman Board. One of the major responsibilities of your office as a Club and Unit officer is to inform your members of what is happening at Osman. For all of us to be successful, we must have good communications up and down the chain. Do not forget to attend the Club and Unit meeting. This is where you get the information.

Because of the Pandemic, the Parade Schedule and MSA Winter has been put on hold. As soon as there is a change, there will be an E-Mail or a

notice in the Osman Parade Blast. I will be working on Kaposia Days (South St. Paul) White Bear Ave. (St. Paul) Pan-O-Prog (Lakeville) Heritage Days (St. Paul Park) (River Falls Parade (River Falls Wis. State Fair (St. Paul)???

When we do have Parades, Osman functions have priority. If you cannot make a Temple Parade, you must get permission from the Potentate. If the Temple does not have a list of your club and Unit parades, your Club and Unit should check in for insurance purposes.

Please wear your Fez at all Stated Meetings, Circus, and Parades. Only clowns, Cycle Corps, 4 Wheels, T-Birds

and Daddy O’s may wear their helmets or Fez in the Parades.

I look forward to working with each Club and Unit. You and all the Nobles are what Osman is all about and we will have a great and fun 2021 and remember the theme for this year FULL THROTTLE.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact me or any of the Assistant Chief ’s Kay Moss, Rique Beslin, Mark Sportelli, Al Christofk and Eddie Clymer.

With subzero temps, not sleeping well, cabin fever, and trying to do creative writing at 2:30 am, I am on my second cup of coffee. Having the club and unit meeting in the rear-view mirror and new visions of events planned, I am revived. From the meeting, the Daddy-

O’s need to create a new position of Safety Director. With as many “wheels” as we have, this will be a much-needed position. I have some guys in mind. We have set our meeting night to the Second Thursday vs third after survey feedback. Now to get back to face to face meetings.

Hopefully soon! Illustrious Sir, with help, has many events planned to keep us together. Full Throttle! Do try to attend as many as you can!

As I am writing this article, the outside temperature is -8 degrees F. Nobody is outside except a lonely doe and her 2 yearling fawns eating at our feeder. They are joined by a lone stray pheasant. They appear so relaxed, no stress from COVID 19 or social

distancing. Maybe we could take a lesson from them.

Hopefully, everyone has been vaccinated for covid. So now we can put this virus behind us and move forward. Although we had several cases of COVID in the Director’s Staff, thankfully all have recovered. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and it gets brighter every day.

The Director’s Staff wishes Ill Sir Sean Gardiner and Lady Tracy much success in 2021. We also welcome Eric Mundt as Outer Guard. Welcome Eric. Osman had a loss of 32 members last year, 2020. I’m sure the Director’s Staff could recruit some of our Masonic Brothers to petition for Osman membership. It can be done.

Our St. Patrick’s Day parade has

been cancelled, and I’m not sure about the Robert’s, Wisconsin parade. I will keep you informed. As soon as the weather warms up, we will get the calliope up and running, and if time permits, we could go on mouse patrol --ha! For future parades and events, check out the Chiefs Corner in the Osman.

We hope our snowbirds stayed healthy as they enjoyed warmer climates, and we wish them safe travels on their way back north.

No dinner plans have been made at this writing but stay tuned. Hopefully, we will be able to meet soon.

Keep on rollin’ with the Director’s Staff,

February brought us colder weather that altered earlier weather that we were able to deal with in a more comfortable manner. With that in mind, the four Austin officers

Chris Brekke, Gary Brolsma, Brad Stout and yours truly, left early Saturday, Feb. 6th, to attend the Osman Officers Seminar.

As could be expected, the meeting was well organized. We received pertinent information and were also able to listen to the Shrine Hospital Ambassador Mia as she spoke to us via a Zoom connection.

Members of the Austin Shrine Club met briefly on Jan. 26th and agreed to participate in the sale of Circus promotional material again this year. Noble Otto Volkert is the chairperson for this project and his role

is appreciated very much.

The other ongoing project for the Shrine Club is the collection of pop cans for the Shrine Health Care program in the Twin Cities. It has been a successful program, with Noble Brad Stout serving as Chairperson. He does a great job of maintaining the trailers which involves flat tires, replacing wheels, etc. His role in this project is also appreciated.

Each year we are able to take toys to the Shrine Auxiliary; this year they were once again delivered to Rose West when we attended the Officers Seminar.

Ill Sir Sean Gardiner has requested Austin Shrine Club to host

the Osman Stated Meeting on Tuesday, March 9th. We have agreed to do this; the meeting will take place at Barley’s Restaurant, located on North Main Street, Austin.

Greetings fellow Nobles and Ladies of Osman Shrine. The Provost have been looking forward to the events for 2021. We have already started a fundraising activity by

selling the best bar style pizza around, Minnesota’s own, Heggies Pizza! So, by the time you are reading this, and you were fortunate enough to order some from us, you could be enjoying that hot, cheesy, and crispy pizza right now!

The Provost is going to be providing parking lot duty for the Hot Sands 5K at Osman in May and we look forward to continuing to serve our Potentate and Shrine at other events throughout the year.

Captain Clymer, Treasurer Christofk, and I attended the Clubs and Units Seminar on Saturday, February 6, 2021. As usual, it was highly informative, and

we look forward to an exciting year in 2021. Mainly excellent events and changes this year such as the Circus in November but with Elephants and Camels! Also coming a Haunted House for the fall!

The Provost Valentines Party was held on February 15, 2021 and was attended by 34 Nobles and Ladies including Osman Potentate, Illustrious Sir Sean Gardiner and First Lady Tracy, Past Potentate, Illustrious Sir Frank Spevak and Lady Joan, our Divan Liaison, Oriental Guide Ryan Colligan, Divan Marshal Greg Sailer and Lady Chris, and Provost Captain Neil Clymer and Lady Denise.

A presentation of thanks to our past Captain of the Provost Noble Kay Moss was made by Past Captain Fred Perez, Captain Neil Clymer and Secretary/Lieutenant Lloyd Cheney. Photos will be in the next edition of the Provost newsletter.

If you are interested in joining the Provost, come check us out. Our meetings are on the third Monday of the month at the Lost Spur/Osman Shrine. (RESUMING IN MARCH!)

Greetings from the Mighty Mites. As everyone is aware COVID-19 negatively impacted the Might’s as well as other clubs and units. We have decided to take steps to deal with the negative impact. This year’s president has established a position to help increase our memberships. We are also

going to work harder to increase parade numbers with a goal of having fun while helping Shrine “kids”.

So, for 2021, let us have fun helping kids and enjoying each other when we socialize. It will be a good year.

Jim Smeby, Jim Moore, Dean Brown and 1st Ceremonial Master Brian Miller

Greetings to All from the Legion of Honor,

Springtime is so near I can almost smell it. This season seems to inspire new excitement and promote a positive zest for life. Although

this winter wasn’t so bad, it is always long and enough is enough. (We didn’t travel south this year.) It’s nice to look forward to some fun Shrine events and some sunshine.

Speaking of events, the Potentate’s Installation and Reception was January 17th and I’m glad we were able to do it in a somewhat traditional manner. This being instead of the other options that were discussed. We offer a big congratulations to Ill Sir Sean Gardiner and Lady Tracy and best wishes for a fun and productive year.

Because of COVID, our December Christmas party was cancelled. In order to install our Legion of Honor

officers, we set up a small private installation ceremony. This was presided over by 1st Ceremonial Master, Brian Miller on January 21. I was installed as Commander, Jim Moore, Lt. Commander/Adjutant and Jim Smeby Secretary/Treasurer. It was short, sweet, and right to the point - and that is all there is to say about that.

The Club and Unit Seminar was held on February 6th at the Lost Spur and was very interesting. It is good to see that there are many fun plans for upcoming events. Because of COVID, many details are up in the air and decisions have to be made as we go. But, Shriners have always proven to be very resourceful men and our Osman Divan is no exception – Ill Sir Sean Gardiner and crew have compiled a list of some very creative activities for the coming months. These times will require some flexibility in order to adapt to whatever challenge presents itself. It looks like we are becoming pretty good at working around this COVID thing.

Along with the many creative events being planned, I would like to participate in and keep an eye on the membership activities. One interesting activity will be devoted to promoting membership by doing road trips to visit Blue Lodges. These (caravans) will not only support the message of Masonry, but promote its link to Shrinedom.

The Idea is “Have Fun in 21.”

Also: If you have participated in or know of an interesting event, send in a note/photo with caption to Doreen. It will be included in the next Osman. It is always fun to keep up with what is going on in Shrineland. You can email this information directly to her and use the subject line: Osman Article.

For more information on the Legion of Honor, please see our ad in this month’s Osman.

With 2020 behind us now, we all hope that we can slowly get back to our normal ways of life soon. We have greatly missed the 2020 parade season and all the positive that comes from them. We are excited to get back on our

bikes and ride so we can raise money for the kids!

Many riders of the cycle patrol were able to join our socially distanced social gathering...lol.

We are all very optimistic for the coming parade season and ready to say hi to you all...

It seems like forever since I have last written for Osman. The year of the Pandemic has changed everything that we do and or did. Masks, separation, quarantine, non-

travel, limited Christmas, and holiday gatherings, and so forth. Life is certainly different, yet as I have said before, life each day is different. The new normal is the everyday normal. As Masons/Shriners we too have changed in our everyday communications, and of course our traditional gatherings. What

hasn’t changed is our Masonic core principals of Charity. How do we find the willingness to help one another and others around us during this Pandemic? How even do we know who to assist? Several ideas, one contact by phone or internet at least those Masons and friends that you are most familiar with. Then reach out to those that are not that close but who you know. Because of the Pandemic, there may be Masons/Shriners that though no fault of their own maybe in temporary need of assistance. Providing assistance to a distressed Freemason is again on of our core responsibilities as Freemasons. All

of this is easy to put in writing, and to make suggestions, however it is the action that needs to happen to make this a reality. We have been very fortunate that our leadership over the last year by Illustrious Sir Larry Norte and his lady (Audrey), illustrated the importance of communications. Our new Potentate Illustrate Sir Sean Gardiner and his Lady (Tracy) are showing that they too will continue the need for communication.

To the World you may be one person, but to a Child you may be the World.

I am very excited to serve Osman Shrine as Chief Aide in 2021!

Some quick notes about me: I was raised in 1991 at Landmark Lodge #103 in Sioux City, IA. I went through York Rite and joined Abu Bekr Shrine all within a 45-day period. My first Shrine unit was the Abu Bekr Rat Patrol, then Clowns. My wife Carol and I moved from Sioux City to South St. Paul in late 1997.

I am a past Master of Mizpah Lodge #191, a current member of the Cycle Corps, Sportsman’s, Daddy-O’s, and St. Paul Zagalas. I try to be very involved with our temple and I encourage others

to do what they can! My thanks to Art Pavlish for preparing me as much as 2020 allowed! I feel fellowship is the core of our organization, and I look forward to all the gatherings we can have!

Speaking of the upcoming events, on March 13th there will be a Ceremonial at The Lost Spur. PLEASE reach out to your Lodge brothers to become a part our great fraternity!

On May 1st, the Inaugural Hot Sands 5K Run will take place on the Lost Spur property. This is open to the public and a great opportunity to show and tell people about who we are. That same day will be a Cinco de Mayo themed

Ceremonial – another opportunity to build our membership.

Later in May we have the Potentate’s Road Trip to Prairie du Chien, WI over the weekend of May 22nd. This family-oriented event ride/road trip will be a scenic tour of both sides of the Mississippi River, as well as fellowship with local Lodges along the way. Watch for more details on all of this on the website and the email blasts.

I am excited to go Full Throttle in 2021!

Greetings Nobles and Ladies of Osman Shrine!

As I sit here writing this edition, we are experiencing the coldest weather of the year. Most of you know that I am a plural member of Masonic lodges. I am currently the Junior Deacon at Accacia #51 in Cottage Grove. Where even with our recent renovations, is a still a building that was built in 1865 that takes a long time to warm up. I am also the Senior Warden at Chippewa 275 in Bigfork, MN, where we meet in the oldest building in that community and temperatures this past week were in the sub zeros (down into the - 40’s!) This does makes Lodge travel difficult not to mention meeting in a very cold and old building very chilly! With this extreme cold adding to our other challenges of late,

the combination can take its toll on the mind and body. I have been told, however, that spring is coming and by the time you are reading this we should be into March and the warmth of spring weather will soon be upon us!

Many of you who were at our club and unit seminar last month saw the unveiling of the 2021 membership plan in a PowerPoint presentation and video which I presented. I also have written in past editions about many events at Osman and opportunities to grow our membership. This year, we look forward to bringing “Osman On The Road.” Road trips destinations with stops to share a meal and fellowship at our Masonic Lodges within Osman’s jurisdiction will bring opportunities to unite Masonic organizations together towards one common goal of growth of membership and overall harmony.

These three road trips and possibly a fourth are a core feature of the 2021 plan. However, to get to the finish line and achieve Gold status and beyond some other things need to be done. Such as prospect list gathering, marketing, social media, email, snail mail, phone calling, etc. All this is part of a campaign strategy to get master masons in those lodges to attend our road trip visits. This will be a major focus of our membership committee this year.

I said that the road trips are a major feature of the 2021 plan. The second major feature is Osman events which break down into categories.

These Osman events will have a membership presence and will be advertised, and our targeted prospected members will be invited to these activities at Osman.

Our Retention team is led by Noble Adam Martin along with Noble Tim Bass. Both are Co-Chairs on the Membership Team. Noble Tim will still be lead on dues lists and Noble Adam will work retention activities and help with restorations.

Our past Potentates on our team are also helping with retention and hospitality. The Illustrious Sirs will be helping with outreach when at our events they will greet Nobles and ensure that everyone is having a good time and harmony prevails.

We will continue the practice of lodge visits for presentations and displays at their events throughout the year.

Oh! and finally, remember the upcoming ceremonial on Saturday, March 13, 2021. St. Patrick’s Day Ceremonial and Party! Get those petitions turned in!

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

Thank you to the Clubs and Units for allowing me to have time to talk about the Osman Auxiliary at your seminar. It was also a time for me to again thank all of you for all you do for the Auxiliary. We so appreciate all your support. I am still amazed that even with no parades last summer, the Clubs and Units donated over $21,000 to the Osman Auxiliary at the Parade to Glory in December. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

At the Clubs and Units Seminar, the Osman Auxiliary presented Illustrious Sir Sean Gardiner with a Wheaties box with his Potentate’s picture. Thank you to Linda Johnson who through her past work connections made all the arrangements to obtain this great gift.

I would like to extend a special thank you to the members of the Austin Shrine Club for all the toys collected and donated to the Osman Auxiliary to be distributed to the children at Shriners Children’s Twin Cities. The toys were absolutely perfect. There were toys for all ages and for boys and girls. I know the children will love the toys! Thank you, Neil Hanson, Brad

Stout, Chris Brekke, and Gary Brolsma for delivering all those boxes of toys. We really appreciate all the support you give to the Osman Auxiliary.

At this time, we have 198 Osman Auxiliary members, and we would love to have more members. Our Auxiliary is very inclusive. It is open to men, women, and young adults. You do not have to have a Shrine relationship to join the Auxiliary. Please invite your friends, neighbors, relatives to join the Auxiliary. The membership fee is $15 per year. If you are interested in joining, please contact Kathy Flicek our membership chairman at 651-454-7868 or [email protected].

Our 2021 events will begin with the Annual Osman Shrine/Osman Auxiliary Golf Tournament which will be on September 12th. The Blood Drive on September 4th, a luncheon on October 23rd, BUNCO on November 11th and the Holiday Luncheon on December 4th. There will be more information to follow on these events. Please mark these dates on your calendar now.

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman and thank you for all for your continued support

to the Auxiliary. Your donations are making a difference in the lives of the children at Shriners Healthcare for Children – Twin Cities. We appreciate everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

A WONDERFUL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN OSMAN AUXILIARY AND WGA4 KIDS

I have the unique opportunity of serving on the Osman Auxiliary Board as Chairman of Gifts Memorials and Honoraria as well as serving as General Chairman of the WGA4Kids Board, serving Shriners Children Twin Cities. (This Board oversees all of the Shrine Auxiliaries in the Midwest.)

From these vantage points I have the chance to see the monies raised for the WGA Wheelchair Fund.

All of you from Osman who so willingly and generously gave to the Wheelchair Fund are to be commended for what you have done. The Wheelchair Fund monies given to the Osman Auxiliary go directly to the WGA4Kids Board. This Board is then responsible for paying for the Wheelchairs that are provided for the children in need.

In 2020, $22,000.00 was sent to the WGA Wheelchair Fund from the Osman Auxiliary Gifts, Memorials and Honoraria account.

I believe that our success is due to your interest in what we do for the children in helping them live normal lives.

My thanks to all of you for bringing joy to our children.
