newsletter publication to the offi ce

CLUB NEWS

A very busy winter schedule continues to roll along at the Evergreen Centre.

Involvement in our various clubs is good and many new friendships are always

one of the great benefi ts of that involvement. It’s great to see many of our

newer members joining one or more of our clubs and contributing to those

clubs’ continued success. Our monthly newsletter is your best source of club

information but if you are unable to fi nd all the answers you need, then our great

offi ce staff are always there to lend a helping hand.

Our February Trash or Treasures event was successful and we thank the organizers

and volunteers that made it so. At time of writing this column the “Year of the

Monkey Lunar Event” is still to happen but I’m sure it will go well. Upcoming

Special Events include a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday March 12th and the Easter

Tea on Wednesday March 23rd. The Pancake Breakfast is always a winner and at

$5pp, it just can’t be beat for value. Something to look forward to in April is the

Evergreen Drama Club Second Stage Players presentation of “Skattered Skits”....

watch for more details on this one.

Our path to a new improved Sound and Lighting system is still ongoing with the

biggest hold up being the wait for a complete and fi nal review of our needs and

a complete acoustics assessment. This is a City of Courtenay function as this is a

city-owned building. Be assured that this will all eventually be completed and we

will be able to move on and complete the project. We do want to make sure we

get it right.

Congratulations goes out to a very deserving Donna Bews. Donna was last

month’s “Volunteer of the Month”. Aff ectionately known as “Dobie”, she is a

mainstay in most of our musical programs at the Evergreen. An excellent article

on Donna appeared in the February issue of the newsletter.

The 2016 AGM is now history and I would like to thank the members that took the

time to attend the meeting. Your executive stays much the same with only one

change. Aft er a vote for Directors, Ken Macleod was elected to the board along

with former Directors Fred Greene and Tom Witty. All other positions remain

the same. Thank you for allowing me to be your President once more. I would

like to thank Dennis Flynn for his contribution in the year past and thanks to Ellen

Whitlaw for allowing her name to stand. We distributed six great door prizes this

year....congratulations to the winners.

And a parting thought....Why do we DRIVE on a PARKWAY and PARK on a

DRIVEWAY......Adios....gk

Table of ContentsThe Camera club encourages member to expand their horizons as well as show

off their work by holding an internal competition every two months. We have

a set subject, albeit usually one with many interpretations. We each select

5 images from those submitted and the 8 or 9 with the most votes are then

displayed in the cafeteria for a month. All those visiting the centre are able to

vote for their favourite. In February, our subject was musical instruments and 8

images were displayed. The people’s choice was Siena Organ by Robin Giles

(photo which appears on March newsletter cover) followed by Between the Sets

by Beth Millar and Banjo by Megan Barnett.

We are having an ongoing battle with

the weather and our fi eld trips with the

rain discouraging many. However,

we do have some dedicated

photographers who headed out to

the Air Park and who were rewarded

with the sun coming out for them. Our

next fi eld trip is to the Royston Trail. In

our education sessions, we watched

videos about lenses followed by a

discussion of what lens to buy. We

also had an overview of the CAPA

judging course with the goal of

learning to better evaluate our own

images. Upcoming sessions include a

hands-on session about the exposure

triangle and focus modes and a more

in-depth session about evaluating

specifi c types of images. We are

working on our next display - Utensils,

that will be hung during the month

of March. We were pleased to be

asked to share your favourite images

from our display in the newsletters.

Our Lightroom group continues to

meet before the regular meeting

and is focusing on the organizational

aspects available. We meet the fi rst

and third Tuesdays of the month in

the Soroptimist Room at 1:00 pm

(or 12pm if you want to sit in on the

Lightroom session) and all Evergreen

members are welcome.

Friday Night DancesWell now, only two dances scheduled

for the month of March, the 11th and

the 18th, so we will be looking forward

to seeing you dancing then.

The rest of the Fridays in April, May

AND June are booked with one

exception and that is April 29th so we

have lots of dancing to look forward

to. We keep trying to encourage and

I will repeat “FEEL LIKE DANCING???

Come try our Friday Night Dance.

If you are single we might be a little

short on dancing partners - so - bring

along a friend or neighbour and meet

others who love to dance.

We are so fortunate to have such a

great facility “The Florence Filberg

Centre” and the marvelous people

and volunteers who take CARE of the

Evergreen Clubs. Thank You.

Happy Gang

I am writing this on the last day of

January, and as I look out my window I

see my Tulips are rising out of the earth.

This, I hope is a sure sign of spring, and

mother nature doesn’t send us some

surprises . By the time you read this,

we will be close to March, or into it,

and looking forward to a lovely spring

and summer.

The Happy Gang has changed books

so a little diff erent selection of music

will be played for the next few months.

We invite anyone interested in

playing with us to come and visit us

on Tuesday morning from 10 am to

noon in the Conference room and sit

with our little audience and see what

we do. Our visitors listen, dance or

sing along with us as they feel moved.

We are always encouraged by their

smiling faces. Happy Easter to all, Liza

Tuesday , March 15th &Tuesday, March 22nd, 20164:30 pm - 6:15 pm Rotary HallIf you are looking for a place to sing,

and have fun playing a very simple

instrument, come and check out

our Club! We encourage persons

interested in playing the ukulele to

come to one of our sessions and

see what we do. Sign out one of

the “loaner” uke’s to take home and

practice, and you will see how easy it

is to pick up many simple tunes quite

quickly.

The music we play is sent to us via

computer, so that we can study at

home. At our sessions the music

is viewed on a large very easy to

read screen.....thus no papers. Our

sessions start with simple chord tunes,

then in the last half of our time, we

play tunes that have chords that are bit

more complicated, and will take a bit

more practice.

All are welcome to come and listen

to us play.....join in the singing if you

Ukulele ClubIt is with great sadness that we report

the passing of a long and valuable

member of the bingo family here at

the Evergreen Club. Bob Sharpe

passed away in February at the ripe

age of 72. Bob was a long time caller

at the weekly bingos, and along with

Tony kept it a fun place to come. Even

aft er having to step down as a caller

he enjoyed coming out to play and

socialize, and had a long list of friends

at the bingo. He will be missed. Our

sincere condolences go out to his

family and many friends.

The Friday bingos continue here at

the Evergreen, and Linda and myself will do our best to retain the same old

atmosphere. Every Friday from 1 to 3,

with cards at .50 cents each as well as a

50/50 draw, so come and help us fulfi ll

the mandate of the Evergreen Club. Bob Miles

Table TennisWell, how wonderful to have two days

of sunshine and light. It was beginning

to get a bit depressing with such dull

light and constant rain. I quite like the

rain but of late it has been so heavy

it made it diffi cult to go walking in.

Anyway spring is on its way. Hope

you enjoyed the sunny Family Day and

such a lovely blue sky.

Meanwhile the table tennis club is

benefi ting from the return of those

who escaped the rain and have

returned to the Island. Monday was

a really good day for us and we had

some very enjoyable games.

Plus Tuesday, of course, where the

games are a lot of fun.

Our times for playing are: Monday,

11.30 am to 1.30 pm and Tuesday,

12.30 to 3.30 pm. We provide bats

and balls and the cost is 75 cents per

member. We would love to see you.

Have you ever come across the word

RELICT while doing your genealogy

research? Usually I have seen it on

offi cial papers like census’, birth,

death of marriage records, etc. I’ll tell

you what it refers to at the end of the

newsletter.

Our next meeting will be held on

Thursday, March 17th at 1 p.m. in the

Soroptomist Room. I’m sorry if you

missed our February meeting as it was

cancelled because the Centre needed

the room for another event so we took

the opportunity to do a fi eld trip to the

Military Museum. We had a great time

having a guided tour and a big thanks

to our guide Jon Ambler. As usual, a

number of us will be meeting around

11:45 in the lounge for lunch before

going upstairs for the meeting and

you are welcome to join us. There are

no drop-in fees.

Now back to the word RELICT. If you

were a widow or a widower you would

have been referred to as a Relict.

Genealogy Club 2:30- 4pm, Lower Native Sons Hall1st Tuesday - Focus on New Users3rd Tuesday - Focus on More Experienced UsersThe iPad Club is a peer-led group

which is open to all iPad and iPhone

owners,(All tablets are not iPads;, if

yours doesn’t have an apple on the

back, it’s not an iPad).

In response to positive feedback from

the members, we’ve decided to make

a change in our approach. It appears

that breaking into small groups is

more eff ective, and it gives beginners

a more comfortable environment to

ask questions in. I remember thinking

that I didn’t even know how to frame

the questions I wanted answers to

when I fi rst got my iPad. We hope this

will allay any fears that the group is too

advanced for you.

So, both the fi rst and third Tuesday

of the month will fi nd us in the dining

room at the Lower Native Sons’ Hall

from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Bring your iPad

and your questions and we’ll match

you up with a group of members who

are more or less at the same level

you are. We strongly encourage our

more experienced members to come

and help share their knowledge with

others.

iPad Tips and Tricks Computer Club1pm, Soroptimist LoungeFriday,March 11, 2016Terry Hall was again our resource at

the February meeting. He came on

‘short notice’ due to postponement

of the RCMP speaker (rescheduled for

March). Terry demoed how to connect

a computer to TV and described

alternative methods to achieve the

same or similar result. An image on

TV is fantastic when compared to the

small computer screen; the process

seems reasonably simple.

Windows 10 downloading and using

it were again popular topics. It is

diffi cult with the continuous changes

and upgrades to keep up with the

language, never mind the processes

involved. We are grateful for your

assistance and your patience, Terry,

when you ‘show and tell’. With

suffi cient time, we may master W10

before W12 beckons! The many and

variety of problems or requests for

Drama Club Brazilian Embroidery

The art of Brazilian Embroidery is

diverse and can be complicated

– challenging I would say! Every

Thursday morning from 9:00am –

12:00pm a nice bunch of women

work away at their projects in the art

room. Some bring in fi nished pieces

they have done at home, so that

everyone can admire and feel inspired.

One morning ten of them even

wore the same shirt – cool! Visitors

are welcome to drop in anytime –

admirers and those contemplating this

3-dimensional art form.

To join, all you need is an Evergreen

morning, and the imagination or belief

that you can do this!

MUFFIN HEROHello? Anyone out there? Where are my early birds at? Surely in a group of nearly 2000 Evergreen Club members we can

fi nd two new couples to join us as Muffi n Heroes! This position works best in a strong partnership. We train you to get the

coff ee on, muffi ns in the oven, and some light kitchen prep work (to get the kitchen ready to open at 8 AM.) This position is

generally 7am-10am and we work around your fl exibility. Our muffi n crew should be called Muffi n Super Heroes as they are

a smaller group that are the heart of your food service operation!

Call Deanne 250-338-1000 ext 232 or email [email protected] if you are interested in hearing more about these

opportunities.

Time to Turn the Tables! Most ‘Volunteers of the Month’ get their photo taken while they pose for the

camera but Lori Webber’s photo captures her right in the act of volunteering!

Many of you will recognize Lori at the Evergreen Club’s recent AGM where she

ran the draw table. Through the years, Lori is always happy to volunteer for EG

raffl e tables, EG admission tables, EG garage sale tables, EG bazaar tables or

Legion poppy fund tables! We thought it was time to ‘turn the tables’ on her,

and recognize her for all of her volunteering! As fellow EG knitting club member

Penny Long states, “She’s a wonderful volunteer and is a valued member of the

club.” Lori joined the club 10 years ago and states, “It’s been a lifeline for me. It

gets me out of the house.” Lori enjoys the camaraderie of the knitters group, and

the friendships made from Bingo. She has a love of knitting and donates many

of her creations to the Comox Valley Child Development Association or St. Joe’s

Hospital Gift Shop. Lori also volunteers as the phone convenor for the EG Meet

& Greet Singles Group. Her role is to communicate dates and entertainment

information to all of the callers of the group. “It’s a really friendly good group.

Something new happens every time,” says Lori. She is also an avid participant

in the EG Darts group. “Fred & Ginny make it a lot of fun. It isn’t serious and we

draw for partners, doesn’t matter who you get!” Besides her time with the EG,

Lori also volunteers at the Courtenay Legion (where she started the Poppy Fund

table at the mall.) She is a 25 year Legion member who has served many years

on the executive and has volunteered for everything from meat draws to kitchen

work. Thanks Lori!
