From the Headteacher

Dear Parent/Carers In my end of term House assemblies I was able to praise the students for their many and varied achievements this term. There has been so much for students to contribute to and to fully develop “Excellence, Leadership and Opportunity” What can’t be fully captured in a newsletter is the day to day focused learning that I see when I visit lessons. The fact that so many students do so much over and above this is a credit to them. I’d also like to thank the staff of the school for providing so many fabulous learning opportunities. I’d like to wish everyone connected to Therfield an excellent Easter holiday and I look

forward to a successful summer term.

The Character Award

Therfield School receive the Character Award from Rt Hon Nicky Morgan, Secretary of State for Education In March this year I was privileged to represent our great school in receiving the DfE Character Award from the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP. Therfield was chosen from over 550 applicants as one of the 27 recipients of this award and the only secondary school in the south east of England. The Secretary of State said…. “The Character Award winners prove that there are teachers, schools and organisations across the country who are doing excellent work to develop well-rounded individuals.” Mr James Malley Headteacher

“The trip to the Character Awards event was a unique opportunity for me. It was very special accepting the award and talking with Nicky Morgan was an exciting but nerve-racking experience. I am really grateful to the school for giving me such a fantastic day.” Joe Cresswell

Therfield School ‘The Best for All’

Excellence - Leadership - Opportunity

I can’t tell you how proud I was of the students at THERFIELD School at the Annual Youth Showcase Awards which took place at the Dorking Halls on Friday 6th March.

The scene was set with the black twinkly back-drop on the stage, the Therfield Band just in front and the round tables set up just like the Oscars, including boys in suits and girls in sparkly dresses. Parents, friends and school staff sat in the bleachers, eagerly anticipating the announcements. The evening was dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments of young people throughout Mole Valley and Therfield students shone like a beacon in every category. Our School is famous for our sporting achievements and the evening proved that we are at the top of our game. We now have a brand new Trophy in our display cabinet as our Year 9 Netball team were the winners of the Sporting Award – this was collected by a member of staff as the girls were away on a Netball Tournament Weekend!! Individually we had four nominations, Abbie, 17, who is a member of Team GB Cycling Development Squad; Louise ,15, also a cyclist who has been selected for Team GB Olympic Development . Apprenticeship programme; Oli who is Team GB Development Rowing Squad and Alfie, 16, who excels at Ice Hockey and has recently been playing with the National Roller Hockey squad. It is amazing how they balance their training commitments with GCSE and ‘A’ level studies. An enormous cheer was heard when Abbie (also glamourous in a sequined dress) went to receive her award.

The Teamwork and Volunteering awards were next and although our students were not the overall winners, the diversity of the nominations has to be acknowledged. Our Sport Leadership team; the Jazz Band who give up so much of their free time; our History students who have commemorated the First World War with both a Peace Garden, Christmas Football matches and associated tutor time activities: our amazing young people who volunteer both within the school and in the wider community with younger children and with those who have learning difficulties. The final highlight of the evening was the Special Achievement Award! There was a deafening cheer for our Year 11 student Cameron, when he was announced as the winner. Cameron had been on lifeguarding duty at a local pool when an elderly man had a massive heart attack. With great presence of mind Cameron secured the area, called an ambulance, used the defibrillator and continued CPR until the arrival of the paramedics. He was praised by the head paramedic and the police saying he could not have done a more perfect job than the one he carried out. Cameron is just 16 years old. How proud we are of the next generation – our future is secure.

History To celebrate the achievements of all Year 7 History students on Tuesday 24th September students and staff of Therfield gathered in the Main Hall to vote for the overall winner of The Castle Competition. Students from Year 7 entered a design of their choice under the many categories; Motte and Bailey, Stone or Shell Keep, Concentric, Palace and Wild Card. All pupils entered the competition with a large variety of materials used, some of which staff had seen before! This included a large variety of cake castles, (and including biscuits and gingerbread!) shoe boxes, egg cartons, a felt castle (Maddie Allen, 7PBE) and even a tree stump! (Sam Conisbee 7LRS). Each Year 7 group held a semi-final where they voted for the winner against their classmates in the different categories, with the finalists go-ing through to the final which would be judged by the whole school. With the support of Miss Palmer’s Sixth Formers who graciously carried all the winning entrants to the main hall, the final was attended by staff and students with the difficult task of picking one overall winner from the 30 finalists. Miss Palmer along with Miss MacGregor and Miss Walker carefully counted all the votes and de-spite a challenging decision from the voters; Marcie Wood (7PCA) was awarded 1st place with her amazing bis-cuit castle; comprising of lollies, bourbons, fondant fancies and wafers! In 2nd Place - Isla Cooper (7PCA) and 3rd place Stephen Wright (7PBE). The winner of the Effort and Achievement Award went to Lara Cole (7LLN) who submitted her amazing Curtain Wall Castle in addition to a beautifully written explanation. Yet again, this year’s creations have set the bar even higher for next year’s Year 7s, and all have been congrat-ulated for their innovative effort from the History Department, well done Year 7! ITN News Session

In order to enrich the learning experience of students, the Managing Editor of ITN News, Mr Robin Elias, held two sessions for Year 11 and A Level Media Studies students to inform them about how news programmes are created and organised. These sessions were extremely beneficial to the Year 11 students as their forthcoming Media Studies Examination is based on Television News. The students learnt about the format and conventions of television news, and how to select a news story. They found the session thoroughly engaging and participated enthusiastically during the discussions and tasks. Mr Robin Elias was delighted to visit Therfield School as he himself was a former student. Miss R Picken KS3 Coordinator - Teacher of English

Therfield poets published Nineteen students from Therfield School ranging from Year 7 to Year 13 have had their poems published in a national poetry anthology. In October the English Faculty entered twenty five poems by Therfield students into a national competition entitled ‘War of Words’ run by Young Writers. Published poets are: Sam Yearley (Year 13), Kyanna Boot, Chloe Drake, Emma Godden, Zoe Hickson, Maisie Jenkins, Matt Lee, Lily Long, Ollie Manlow, Toby Marquis, Alex Mutter, Sophie Nunn, Alice Penegar, Hollie Slatcher-Thwaites (Year 11), Abbie Lodge, Sheree Usman Binasing (Year 9), Rebecca Dore-Boize, Rachel Smith (Year 8) and Lara Coles (Year 7). These thought-provoking poems show amazing originality, creativity and sensitivity; reflecting the incredible talents of Therfield students. The poetry competition was open to students aged 11-18 across the country with all the poems having to be based around the theme of conflict. Year 11 students had been studying conflict poetry in English lessons, so were inspired by such famous poets as Wilfred Owen, Alfred Tennyson, Ted Hughes, Owen Sheers and Simon Armitage. Creative Writing Club members considered different aspects of conflict, as well as war, and wrote a variety of poems around the conflict theme. This is the second poem Year 8 student Rebecca Dore-Boize has had published. Last year Rebecca had a poem published in a regional poetry anthology. On seeing one of her imaginative compositions in print again, Rebecca stated, “It’s really exciting and when I saw the book I felt proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to tell everyone about it.” Fellow Therfield Creative Writing Club member Sheree Usman Binasing in Year 9 said of the poetry competition, “I thought it was a great idea to write down feelings and emotions about war as unfortunately wars seem to happen somewhere in the world all the time. So it was a wonderful way to put that message across to people.” A number of Therfield students will also see their original writing published in two forthcoming creative writing collections through Young Writers. Twenty students have had their mini-monologues chosen for publication in an anthology to be published at the end of March and members of Creative Writing Club will have their poems based on the different factions in the Divergent young adult books published in the summer. Therfield’s Creative Writing Club, run by Mrs Coles and two Year 11 helpers – Hollie Slatcher-Thwaites and Emma Godden – meet during Monday lunchtimes in S18 (the computer room on the English corridor). All Key Stage 3 students are welcome to join.

Therfield Students Make Headlines - BBC School Report

Gifted and Talented Students from Therfield School had the opportunity to write and film their own news reports as part of this year’s BBC School News Report. They covered a range of stories, from the unveiling of the new pound coin to Manchester City’s exit from the knockout stages of the Champions League, and their reports were seen and read by people across the globe.

The day was a great success and students enjoyed a range of sessions beforehand to explore news values and the importance of the news to audiences. Year Eight student Rachel Smith said ‘I really enjoyed finding out about how the news is reported and what makes a story valuable to an audience. Making our reports for people around the world to see and read was a brilliant opportunity and I found it really rewarding. Mr Tom Thornton- Subject Leader for Media Studies

Maths Team Challenge Wednesday 18th March saw 30 year 8 and 30 year 9 students competing in teams of 4 to represent Therfield at the regional Maths Challenge. Each team consisted of two year 8 and two year 9 students with three rounds to complete. Round one had them completing 4 part problems, requiring the solution for part one to move on to part 2, until you reached the final solution. This proved the most challeng-ing round for most groups, but they were not disheartened, ready for round 2…… Cross-number saw each pair receiving the across or down clues to a cross-number puzzle, frantic cries of – “do 4 down/17 across” could be heard as teams tried to score as many points as possible, it was at this point that some teams began to build a lead. Into round 3, ten problems, each worth 6 points, solve as many as possible. Teams approached this tactically, including the team who ‘coerced’ Mr Malley into displaying his math skills (and he was correct). After close competition the top three teams were separated by just 4 points, with Ra-chel Smith, Mariska Viljoen, Sam Wild and Simon King going on to represent us at the regional event. They performed well and cam 9th out of 24 schools, placing in the top 4 state schools, this is our best result to date and huge congratulations should go to the students, along with a thank you to Mr Hibbert for accompanying them.

Talk from Laurence Anslow

On Wednesday we had a visit from Laurence Anslow who is an elected Fellow of the Royal

Astronomical Society and has lectured widely at astronomical societies in the south of England. He

gave us an insight on what to expect from the Solar eclipse this Friday, tips on what equipment we

could use including uses of a kitchen colander to great effect.

We had a virtual tour of the universe and Laurence brought in his remote controlled Celestron

Telescope which has an in built navigation system to show what planets or stars are in orbit at any

given time of night. We learned that one of the great things about Astronomy is that the sky is

constantly changing and there is something happening up there all the time if we take the time to look.

We are booking ourselves in for the total eclipse in Summer 2017!

SCIENCE TECH CHALLENGE On Thursday we took 15 year 10 students down to Southampton to compete in the annual National Science Tech Challenge run by Exxon Mobile. This year’s challenge was to design a product, scheme or material which would make a brand new city more energy efficient. Pupils learnt about the huge amounts of energy that are wasted in cities every day and how the demand for energy is ever increasing. Therfield were in 3 teams, each team had 2 hours to work on their ideas. Each team designed an innovative imaginative idea. Teams then presented their ideas to judges from other schools. Team Innovation made up of Luke Elbishlawi, Ben Keene, Matt James, Elizabeth Cole and Chess O’Mahony made it through to the final. This team came up with a very sophisticated inventive idea on using waste disposal systems built into

tower blocks to harvest gravitational potential energy. The team presented their ideas to the rest of

the schools and a panel of 6 Judges from Exon Mobile. While the Judges were deliberating on the

results students were lucky enough to be taken on a tour of Fawley Oil Refinery. On returning the

results were announced. We were extremely delighted to be presented with the 3rd place Trophy.

Starbucks Assessment Day On Friday 6th March 2015 eight Year 11 Business Studies students and three Year 13 Business Studies students attended the Starbucks Assessment Day at the Keyworth centre at London South Bank University. The assessment day followed their success at the in school workshop and now students were competing against other students from other schools to win the fantastic opportunity of a paid apprenticeship at Starbucks. The students participated in a number of exciting workshops which entailed teambuilding skills, solving and acting out possible customer service scenarios at Starbucks, meeting key Starbucks manag-ers in the ‘Mock Shop’ café and completing a mock interview, in which students were interviewed and given feedback accordingly. Students were individually assessed throughout the day. Therfield’s stu-dents have done us proud again, they were confident, integrated well and did not hesitate when com-pleting all of the challenges they were set. They were all extremely professional throughout the entire day and made a fantastic impression of the school to Starbucks, My Kinda Crowd and all other schools present. The results of the day will be released by Starbucks soon. If you are interested to see some photos of the day, there are some on the My Kinda Crowd Twitter page, so follow them and you will see our students in action on the day. Students involved:

“On a visit to Art one lunchtime I came across six students working together on a stunning composition as part of a competition organised by the University of Surrey. It transpired that Farhan Chughtai (9NTH), Sam Renouf (9LRL), Carly Harman (9NTH), Mariska Viljoen (9JWE), Katie Jones (9JWE), Cameron Sayers (9PMU), Alex Creswell (9LRL), Isobel Duke (9JWE), Dean Armstrong (9JWE), Dylan Adams (9NTH), Finn Turner (9LRL) had collaborated to design and paint a mural as part of an extra-curricular Gifted & Talented year nine project. These students were visiting the department at different times at break, lunch and after school to complete different sections of the design. The University of Surrey and BAM Construction Limited worked in partnership to invite ten local secondary schools to enter a painted piece under the theme of ‘Wild and Domestic’. Students worked all hours to complete the piece for the deadline of Friday 13th February. Miss Upson and Paul Clarke delivered Therfield’s entry to the University of Surrey during half term. All pieces will be exhibited permanently outside of the Veterinary School of Medicine at the University. Mr James Malley Headteacher

Excellence - Leadership - Opportunity Sport Netball weekend to PGL Liddington March 2015 On March 6th 2015 Therfield School netball team took part in a PGL tournament weekend, officiat-ed by England Netball. It’s a weekend of intensive match experience that helps improve skills and technique. The schedule of games allows each team maximum match experience, the chance to compete against other schools and clubs and also the opportunity to learn from watching other teams play. The tournament closes with a special presentation of medals and trophies by a member of the England netball team Day 1 brought a loss for year 9/8 team with the first match, however things improved and by the end of the first day Therfield School year 9/8 team had won 4 matches, drew 1 match and lost 1 match. Lucy Marchant got player of the match for her excellent shooting skills as Goal Shooter and Anya Stead received player of the tournament for her outstanding performance in every match as Centre court player. Day 2 brought a sense of anticipation with 2 matches left to play it was imperative that the year 9/8 team won these matches to make it through to the semi-final and then the final. The team stepped up to the challenge and through determination and strong team identity made it through to the semi-final. Tension increased as the girls went on court to play as we all knew this would be a tough match. The game started off with promise but the opposition took a lead. Therfield recognised this and tried to step up their intensity but it wasn’t enough and lost 4-8. Therfield year 9/8 team came away with Bronze medals and as their teacher and coach am very proud of their achievements. The PGL adventure activity sessions encourage team members to face different challenges from those on the court such as support, encouragement, teamwork and communication skills whilst raising the morale, teamwork, fitness and enthusiasm of our netball players.

Year 10 Cup Final V Hinchey Wood NSSSA League Final Therfield showed great desire and character to come from behind to win 3-2 to clinch the NSSSA League trophy. Mid way through the first half Elliott Downs scored a way taken goal to put Therfield one ahead after a great Therfield move, then with less than 5 minutes to go until half time Hinchey Wood levelled the scoring against the run of play. At the start of the second half Therfield switched off at the back and allowed the Hinchely wood centre forward to put them 2-1 ahead. Therfield equaliser came soon after when Harry Jones did brilliantly to keep the ball in play from the wide area and then move it across the box to Kegan Packham who showed great composure to place the ball in the corner of the goal. Then with 15 minutes to go Kegan Packham Scored the winner with a great strike from 25 yards out to beat the keeper, it was a goal worthy of winning any cup final. In the last 2 minutes after some great defending by captain Connor Packham who showed great leader-ship on the day and was at the heart of the defence with Luke Trippas, Tom Poppleton pulled off a great save to keep Hinchey wood out from taking it to extra time. Overall the best team won on the day. Therfield Team

Summery of Sport this Term As the Spring Term draws to its conclusion we've been involved in a range of Sporting suc-cess which have put the 'icing on the cake' of a brilliant term's efforts. The Year 10 boy’s football kicked off Therfield's pursuit of silverware with a keenly fought 3-2 victory over Hinchley Wood in the District Final. This was rapidly followed by the Year 9 Mixed hockey team who became North Surrey Champions after convincing wins in a tournament held at Therfield. This week the Year 11 boys team became North Surrey Champions with a pro-fessional 2-0 performance. The Year 9 girls won their final 2-1 to become North Surrey District Champions, going onto represent the District at the County Finals next month. With Year 9 boys beaten finalists, Year 8s reaching the semi-final and the Year 7s coming third, Therfield is challenging for silverware at all levels. Well done to everyone involved; my thanks go to all the PE staff, but in particular to Mr Downs for his excellent coaching of so many Therfield teams.

Gold D o E presentation at St James’ Palace Mrs Pickett had the unexpected honour of attending the Gold Award Presentation at St James’ Palace on Wednesday 25th March as the guest of Rory Kent (Head boy 2013 – 14). The day dawned sunny and after arriving early enough for a photo stop outside Buckingham Palace (where’s my ‘selfie stick’) we were waiting to enter the Palace. St James’ Palace Is not open to the general public, so it is a real privilege to be in the state rooms. More and more award holders arrived, then two familiar faces, Liam Hosking and Nicholas Ashurst were collecting their awards too. We were in the Queen Anne room and had the gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold as our guest speaker, she was inspirational as we waited for the Duke of Edinburgh to speak with the young people. Prince Philip took his time as he met and spoke with the young people present, congratulating them on the effort required to achieve this prestigious award, before certificates were presented and we emerged back into the spring sunshine. I am always in awe of the commitment and tenacity shown by young people who achieve the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award and to be in a room full of award holders is a pleasure. To have three of Therfield’s students present, who between then have totalled up over 400 hours of community service, physical endeavour and skill, not to mention the many kilometres of mountainous walking, blisters and rain, is a humbling experience. Rory Kent: ‘thank you for giving me this opportunity, I am proud to have been a small part of your (and many other’s) D of E journey.’

Climbing Club finishes for another year It always surprises me how quickly time passes and as climbing club approached its final session. Once again time had flown! Our sign up in September saw 30 new and existing climbers ready for the challenge of 6 weeks training and progression at a local climbing centre. Over the past two years we have seen several climbers progress from top rope climbing to lead climbing and this season was to be exception with 6 climbers completing the training, some still need a little practice so have not been ‘let loose’ yet, hopefully next year. We also gained some new year 7 climbers and for once the girls outnumbered the boys 7:1 – go girls! I have trained many climbers over the years, but this year the ‘new recruits’ shone, within one session they were climbing and belaying independently, trusting their peers to support them and reaching the top every time. I am excited to see what they can do next year! Once again I am impressed by the dedication and commitment of our students, giving up their early Friday evenings to participate and hope to see many of them back next year!

Royal visit for youngsters—by Y.E.S Scheme (Youth Engagement Scheme)

Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, met students from schools in Ewell and Letherhead during a whis-tlestop tour of youth activities on offer in the county. He visited High Ashurst Outdoor Education Centre in Mickleham last Wednesday March 11, having been invited by Surrey County Council chairman David Munro to come and see projects supported by Surrey Youth Support Service (YSS). Groups came from all over the county to showcase their activities for the prince. Youngsters from Epsom and Ewell, who are not involved in education, employment or training, showed him how they are being prepared for work through an arts and crafts project run by senior Surrey YSS officer Sue Raftery. Students from the Glyn School, Ewell and Therfield School Leatherhead, took part in a demonstration of teamwork and skills gained on a youth engagement scheme run by Surrey Fire and Rescue. The Surrey YSS carpentry project held at workshops in Epsom, also showed the prince how young offenders on Surrey youth justice service's restorative intervention programme learn wood-working skills and prepare for employment. They presented the prince with a birdbox they had made.
