Council were successful in gaining funding through the Keep Australia Beautiful, Beverage

Container Recycling Grants program.

Bottle and can recycling bins will be placed at the Adventure Park, RM Williams Way northern entrance and at the Information Bay for use by both locals and the travelling public

Relocation of Orroroo’s Parenting Room

A Parenting Room was set up in Orroroo some time ago to accommodate young mothers, their babies and small children. The concept is for mums to have a place where they can change and feed their baby, with the emphasis particularly on having a private and comfortable space to breastfeed.

The facilities have been shifted from the original venue near the Orroroo Pharmacy and are now housed as part of the Restrooms in the Main Street. We hope this relocation will make this facility much more convenient having ready access to the existing toilet facilities and closer to the main business area.

Washing facilities, a change table and comfortable chair for feeding are available 24/7. We hope that this great facility will be well utilised.

Any feedback or queries can be made to the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton by phoning 8658 1260.

Australia Post Grants

Australia Post have opened Our Neighbourhood Community Grants to the public. Applications can be submitted with the help of an Application Kit that can be picked up from your local Post Office or you can apply online at www.ourneighbourhood.com.au

The Grant offers possible funding of up to $10,000.00 per project. The program gives a helping hand to small groups working to build a more inclusive, connected society.

Applications close on Thursday 2nd April at 5pm so make sure you grab a kit or get online before you run out of time. You can find out more information by emailing [email protected] or phone 1300 765 772.

Orroroo Recreation Ground Master Plan

The Orroroo Recreation Ground Master Plan Surveys that were included in the February Gazette are due in to

Council by 20th March. We appreciate the input that many community members have had and it is a great help to

determine what the outcome of the project will include.

If you wish to complete a survey and do not have a copy, you can collect one from the Council Office or complete it

online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/M52JGWQ. The link for this survey can also be found on the District

Council of Orroroo Carrieton webpage, www.orroroo.sa.gov.au

District Council of Orroroo Carrieton will be holding a Community Information Session on Tuesday 31st March in

the Town Hall at 6.00pm. Please make sure you come along if you would like to be up to date with the latest

developments in the Orroroo Recreation Ground Master Plan. This is a great opportunity for you to have a say and

input. This is a very exciting project for the Orroroo Carrieton region and Council hopes to have as much

community involvement as possible. A project for the community needs to include the community.

Commemoration of 150 Years of Goyder’s Line

2015 brings the 150 Year Anniversary of Goyder’s Line and the surveying of the land by G. W. Goyder. This is an

important and vital piece of the region’s history and it is a milestone that needs to be recognised and celebrated.

The Orroroo Carrieton Tourism and Events Committee is currently discussing and planning what celebrations will

take place.

There have been no definite plans put in place at this stage as there is still much discussion, planning and

sponsorship to be finalised. The ideas that have been discussed include holding a Period Dinner in the Town Hall

which will require attendees to be dressed in the fashions of the day from 1860’s. There has also been discussion

about holding a Street Fair and a High Tea.

As a permanent Tourist Attraction and feature of our history, Council and the Orroroo Carrieton Tourism

Committee hope to acquire funding to place a wall at the point where Goyder’s Line crosses the road. There is

much discussion as to where the accurate place is and this will hopefully be erected in time for the celebrations.

If you would like to have any input into this celebration and the

planning, please forward your ideas in a formal letter to the

Orroroo Carrieton Tourism and Events Committee, PO Box 3

Orroroo SA 5431 or [email protected].

If you would like to read the history of Goyder’s Line, a book that

is worth reading is, Nature’s Line George Goyder, Surveyor,

Environmentalist, Visionary, written by Janis Sheldrick.

U/14 State cricket champions

The Mid North U/14 Association cricket team headed to Adelaide early in January to play cricket against other state cricket teams. The Mid North team consisted of boys from Orroroo, Crystal Brook, Booleroo Centre, Clare, Spalding and Port Pirie. The boys played 3 games for the week against Broken Hill, Barossa and Light, and Murray Districts, with their 4th game being washed out. The boys played extremely well against Broken Hill, scoring over 300 runs in 45 overs which gave them their first win for the week. The other two games were a lot closer, Mid North held on to win both games, which meant 3 wins for the week and finished top of the ladder.

This is the first time U/14 Mid North Association cricket team has ever won, so it was great excitement right round. Congratulations boys.

ALEXANDER NAISMITH, J.P., storekeeper, of Jamestown was born at Salford, Manchester, in 1841, and came to this State by the “Macedon” with his parents in 1849. His father, Mr. William Naismith, after a brief sojourn at Gumeracha, took up land at Tungkillo, and subsequently Mr. Alexander Naismith carried on farming pursuits for some years in this district. In 1872 he proceeded with his brothers, Messrs. T. D. and Robert Naismith, to the Belalie district, and in the following year purchased property in the Hundred of Black Rock. Two years later this was disposed of, and the gentleman under review came to Jamestown, and in partnership with Mr. James Coombe established a general storekeeping business, also carrying on as timber merchants. Upon the dissolution of this partnership Mr. Naismith took over the premises he now occupies, and in June, 1884, commenced business in conjunction with Mr. Thomas Moody. The partnership continued until 1889, when the latter gentleman retired from the firm, and Mr. Naismith has since conducted operations on his own behalf. The firm includes chaff cutting in its operations, and was the pioneer of the trade in this commodity with the Barrier. He has occupied varied public offices, being a Justice of the Peace, a former member of the Town Council, Trustee of the Institute, and a member of the Hospital Committee.

The Times and Northern Advertiser, Peterborough, Friday 20 June 1919

DEATH OF MR. A. NAISMITH.

On Saturday morning, 7th inst., death claimed one of the early residents of the Jamestown district in the person of Mr. Alexander Naismith, aged 79 years. The deceased gentleman, who was one of Jamestown's most highly respected citizens, was horn at Salford, Manchester, and came to this State by the ship Macedon with his parents in 1849. After a brief sojourn at Gumeracha, his father, Mr. William Naismith, took up land at Tungkillo, and

subsequently Mr. A. Naismith carried on farming pursuits there. In 1872. with his brothers, Messrs. F. D. and R. Naismith, the deceased came to the Belalie district, and in the following year purchased property in the Hundred of Black Rock. Two years later Mr. Naismith came to Jamestown, and in partnership with Mr. James Coombe established a general storekeeping business and timber merchants. Upon the dissolution of partnership Mr. Naismith took over the premises, and in June, 1884, commenced business in conjunction with Mr. Thos. Moody. In 1889 Mr. Moody retired from the firm, and Mr. Naismith continued the business until his retirement about eight years ago. The deceased gentleman has been very prominent as a citizen, being a justice, of the peace, and having held public positions as a member of the Town Council, trustee of the Institute, a member of the board of management of the Hospital, and a trustee of the Band. Mr. Naisith was also a good worker in musical circles, being a member of the orchestra. As a member of the Baptist Church for many years he did good work, and was in the choir. Of late years the deceased has lived quietly, and not taken an active part in public matters. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, when the remains were laid to rest in the Jamestown Cemetery. Owing to the illness of the Rev. Barrow, the Rev. Bowering, of Peterborough, a former pastor of the local Baptist Church, conducted the services at the house and graveside. Mr. Naismi.th was twice married, and by the first wife there were two sons, William (Jamestown) and R. E. (New Zealand); by the second marriage, there were one son, A. C. (Jamestown) and five daughters, Mesdames G. Ligertwood (Mitcham), F. C. Goodes (Belalie East), L. J. Bills (Peterborough) and Misses G. and F. E. Naismith (Jamestown). There are 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Messrs. John Naismith (Mount Pleasant) and F. D. Naismith (Black Rock) arc brothers.

Murray Shackleford recognised for his contribution to the Rodeo Industry

The “legendary” Dick White an iconic Bronc Rider presented Murray Shackleford with an award at the

recent Carrieton Rodeo.

Mr White remarked that Murray has had a long involvement with the sport of Rodeo, working in

various capacities around the yards and arenas. He once teamed with Snow Rowe as a “pick-up man”

in the early seventies at Wilmington. But it was as a “Shute Boss” he became more widely known at

Carrieton and Wilmington from 1975, other rodeos followed.

It was during this period that Murray had started calling at Bush Events. In 1977 he began sponsoring

the open Saddle Bronc at Carrieton (always his favourite event). MW had a keen eye for bucking

horses and would often acquire horses for the late Rex Luckraft. He still continues to do so for Terry

Williams.

With the retirement of Fred Haulser, Murray moved into the commentary position at Carrieton and

continued in this position for six years. During this time other rodeos soon moved to access Murray’s

skills as an announcer.

In 1984 he went on to hold an amateur rodeo on his

property at Valkerie. This proved to be a popular event

for many years and gave many a young rider a chance to

prove themselves and test their skills. Some of these

young riders went on to have great rodeo careers. A

couple of these riders won National Roughstock Titles

and found success in North America. Proceeds from

Murray’s events at Valkerie were distributed within the

community including the Orroroo Area School.

Today Murray is in his twilight years but can still be seen

helping on the admittance gate and helping in other

small ways at Carrieton and in the community. He is

certainly a worthy recipient of this recognition.

AROUND THE RINKS AT ORROROO

WITH “ WRONG BIAS “

As the minor round of Pennant Bowls wrapped up on

Saturday 7th March congratulations must go to the

Orroroo Mahood team for finishing in second place to

advance to the final play offs. Top division Boucher did

not make the finals but finished midfield. Throughout the

season Boucher showed glimpses of very good form by

defeating two of the top finals teams and losing to

Premier favorites Jamestown by two shots.

Wednesday Blieschke Shield competition saw Orroroo

finish just outside the finals. Thursday Ladies competition

also missed the finals and had a struggle at times with

numbers being available, this saw men playing for

Orroroo as was the case with many other towns

throughout the Association. Saturday , Wednesday and

Thursday Pennants have seen an increase in opposite

gender taking part in all bowls.

The clubs social activities this season have been very

successful with the catering of Saturday night teas and

“Fun Nights” involving the community to come along and

enjoy some social bowls and club hospitality. With the

success of the major tournaments over the last couple of

seasons and the clubs social activities the Board of

Management have been able to repay the Bowling Club

loan with the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton well in

advance of the expiry date. It is a credit to all members

for their support that the Bowling Club finds itself in a

debt free position with excellent reserves for the

replacement of the playing surface at some stage in the

future.

All Club Championship events have been finalised from

both Men’s and Ladies facilities.

achievements.

CARRIETON NEWS A relatively quiet month with no rain reported and some very hot weather.

Get Well

Best wishes to Father CJ who has spent some time in Hospital and is now recuperating

and to anyone else who is, or has been on the sick list.

Congratulations

Paula Osborn on being elected as Chairperson of the Orroroo Carrieton Tourism and

and may your tenure be rewarding and successful.

Watch This Space!!

At the Rodeo meeting held on 27th February some discussion was held on this years’

rodeo to be held Sunday 27th December 2015. It was suggested that the national anthem

be sung by a ladies choir. Sandy McMenamin is offering her services again. SO, ladies here

is your chance!! ANYONE from ANYWHERE who is interested are very welcome to be a

part of this group. Keep an eye on this page for further details. Let’s see if we can muster

up 100, 90, 80 …….. voices!?

THE PROBUS CLUB OF ORROROO & DISTRICTS

There were 46 members at our March meeting which included the AGM. There were 7 apologies for the day and we were pleased to welcome Mr. Doug Braddock as a new member.

Our guest speaker Colleen Shackleford held our attention as she gave us an informative outline of her life. Born in the Adelaide Hills on the day that the Atom bomb was dropped on Japan. Her early years were spent in the Adelaide Hills where her parents ran a number of businesses. After completing her schooling at Oakbank, Colleen was quickly told that she had to find a job, which was not an easy thing to do in those days. She was able to find work at the Onkaparinga Woollen Mills which were a big employer of people at the time. Later she applied and got a job with the PMG working as a telephonist. When she got married the custom of the day was that you had to resign your position to make way for another younger person. Married life meant moving around until settling at Woomera where Colleen managed to get a job running the TAB Agency. Woomera with its many overseas people opened the door to different foods and cultures. On her second attempt to obtain a transfer in the TAB, Colleen was successful in being appointed to Victor Harbour TAB, a much bigger branch but she found the people to be unfriendly. Her love and desire to own her own horse led her to Orroroo where she also was talked into being the shearers cook for Murray Shackleford. This led to some adventurous trips out to outback stations where the facilities left much to be desired.

For some time Colleen ran the Orroroo Medical shop before retiring to spend more time on looking into the family trees, the ancestry of members of her family as well as helping friends find out information about their past.

Malcolm Byerlee gave a vote of thanks and presented Colleen with a Probus biro on behalf of those present.

ORROROO COMMUNITY CHURCH A few weeks ago while using the internet an innocent looking pop up appeared advising that the latest

Firefox updates were available. It said, “click here” So I did. I very quickly realized this was not a good idea

as pop up pages began to override what I was trying to do. All my efforts to correct the problem failed, so I

called in professional help. Although he was able to get rid of most of the viruses there were a few nasty

ones that blocked any attempt to delete them. It was decided the surest way to deal with the problem was

to back up my documents and wipe the hard drive clean. I now have a computer that is working well again,

with good internet access, but with a policy of not clicking on any updates or add-ons.

When God created the world it was virus free but sin came into the world through man. The result was that

the world became corrupted. God’s plan for dealing with this was to send His Son Jesus to live on the earth

and to die on a cross in our place so that those who give their lives to Him have their hard drive wiped

cleaned and restored through Jesus. This is what Christians commemorate at Easter.

God bless, John Cozens
