Chapel friends,
Sarah and I have been here at the Cayo Deaf Institute in Belize
for just a month now. It has been a blessing to be able to serve
here. Much of my time has been spent putting the finishing touches
on the renovation of the bathrooms for dormitory the small girls
use. This included the soffits, window trim and other finishing
touches. One of the attached photos shows me working on a window. I
have also been planning for the renovation of the porch on house
#11 which our Chapel mission team plans to work on in July/August
of this year. This has meant a lot of time climbing all over the
house to get measurements, time at the drafting board and then
presenting the ideas to the directors for changes or approval.
Sarah and I are eating our breakfasts in our house but for the
other two meals we go to the school dining room. Sometimes we
invite the deaf children over for games and snacks in the evening.
The other attached photo shows Sarah , the 4 oldest deaf girls and
their dorm mother enjoying some snacks after some games. We
participate in the staff devotions and prayer meeting on Monday
evenings and I led those devotions this week. On Sundays we either
stay here at the school for deaf church or go across the river for
services in the German speaking Mennonite churches. My sister
Marian is visiting us for a week right now. We praise God that
Sarah's health has remained stable.
BlessingsDan and Sarah Beane

March CalendarAward to Principal Doug Beanes School
A small rural Cape Breton school has won an award in an
internationalcompetition for their innovation and leadership in
renewable energyand sustainability. Students and staff at Munroe
Academy, in BallsCreek, N.S. recently moved into a new building and
wanted toconsider possible initiatives that might improve energy
efficiency intheir new school.
We had a group of grade seven math students who finished up
theircurriculum early. We turned them loose and said research this
projectand see what you can come up with for creative solutions for
our newschool building and this was the result, says Principal Doug
Beane. The students ended up creating a solar air heater using
recycledmaterials, collecting empty pop cans, drilling holes in the
ends andused aluminum tape to secure them together. The solar air
heater wasa winning idea at the Zayed Future Energy Contest, an
internationalcompetition on how to better the environment, and
Munroe Academywas awarded $70,000.
The project is going to provide $63,000 for PV solar panels to
go ontop of the school, which will provide the school with a grid
tiedelectric generation system based on solar power, says Beane.
Anadditional $7,000 will be used to promote education. The
long-termvision is to have the students establish a green business
spinoff wherestudents would build and sell the product locally.
Congratulations onyour schools honor, Doug! Dougs parents are Dan
and Sarah Beane.
