Identity Theft Reaction & Prevention

Recent security breaches at major retailers highlight the importance of knowing how to protect yourself from both the known and un-known identity thieves looking to prey on your personal information for their own financial gain. Identity thieves can use a person’s credit or debit card for purchases, can use a person’s Medicare number to send fraudulent bills to Medicare, or can even use a person’s identity to open new lines of credit.

Losing control of your identity to unknown thieves can be scary and confusing. However there are some great services available that will help you stop the thieves and help restore your financial security. If you know that your credit or debit card has been stolen the first thing you should do is contact your credit card company and/or bank and notify them about the theft so that they can shut down your account. Additionally, you should inform the police and file a report about the theft. If your driver’s license was stolen you should contact the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles to immediately report the theft. You will need to appear in person at your local DMV office to obtain a new license and provide sufficient proof of your identity. In addition, you should bring a police report or other proof that you were the victim of identity theft to the DMV. If you fear that your Medicare number or other insurance coverage may have been compromised, contact your doctor’s office and ask that they not take any orders or appointments from suspicious callers using your information. Additionally, always monitor your Medicare Summary Notices to ensure that there have been no fraudulent charges to Medicare under your name. Medicare will never call and request your Medicare number over the phone. You should also file an identity theft complaint with Wisconsin’s Office of Privacy Protection. The Office of Privacy Protection takes information gathered across the state and works to stop widespread identity thefts. Call (800) 422-7128 to file an identity theft complaint form or obtain one online at www.privacy.wi.gov.

The Stoughton Cab is now available

Identity Theft Article Cont:

If you feel as though you have unknowingly exposed yourself to suspected identity theft, such as inadvertently giving your Social Security number to an unknown source, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your credit. Contact your credit card companies and banks to inform them of the theft. In addition, you should obtain a security freeze on your credit identity. This will prevent criminals from using your identity to open new credit cards or obtain loans under your name. To place a security freeze on your credit report, contact one of the following via certified mail:

Equifax: CSC Credit Services Security Freeze PO Box 674438 | Houston, TX 77267-4438

Experian: Experian Security Freeze PO Box 9554 | Allen, TX 75013

TransUnion: TransUnion Security Freeze PO Box 6790 | Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

The typical fee for this service is $10 but will be waived with a police report documenting the identity theft. Tips for preventing identity theft:

1) Never give your personal information such as credit card, Social Security, or Medicare numbers to anyone who calls or sends you an e-mail. Thieves are opportunistic and prey on people’s trust and willingness to help. It is wise to be sus-picious of unsolicited mail, strange e-mails, and phone calls that request personal information. 2) Check your wallet and limit the number of identification cards you carry. Many cards contain your Social Security number. If you don’t need it, don’t carry it with you. 3) Sign up for the Wisconsin NO CALL list to limit the number of calls you receive from telemarketers by calling 1-866-9 NO CALL. 4) Shred or destroy credit card receipts, credit applications, bank checks and financial

statements. Many thieves obtain information from documents tossed in the trash. 5) Choose to opt out of unsolicited credit and insurance offers. Call 1-888-5 OPT OUT. 6) Review your credit card and financial statements. 7) Keep sensitive documents in a safe place in your home. 8) Place out-going mail in an official, secure mail box. The flag on your mailbox tips-off more than just the postal carrier, it alerts thieves too. 9) On your computer be aware of receiving e-mails that appear to be from your bank or credit card company known as a phishing scam. This scam is an e-mail message that directs you to a website that appears to be from your bank or other business. They will ask you to verify information about yourself or your accounts. Your bank or credit card company will not communicate with you via unsolicited e-mails. 10) On vacation be aware of your environment and individuals lingering around. Conversations about personal information can be easily picked up and used. When verifying a hotel with a credit card take notice to be sure no one can overhear your conversation. March is: March for Meals Month The first home-delivered meal was in the United Kingdom in 1943, following WWll. Many services used old prams (baby buggies) to transport the meals, using straw bales, and even old felt hats to keep the meals warm while delivering. Australia’s Meals on Wheels started in 1952, being delivered in South Melbourne by a lady on a tricycle. When it got too much for her to handle, the Red Cross took over. In the U.S. the first home-delivered meal program began in Philadelphia in 1954. Margaret Toy, a social worker at the Lighthouse Community Center, organized a program to provide nourishment that met the dietary needs of “ shut ins” who would have gone hungry. Most of the volunteers were high school students, who were named “Platter Angels”. They would prepare, package, and deliver food to the elderly and disabled through their community. Columbus, Ohio, was the second city in the U.S. to establish community based meal program. A federation of woman’s clubs went through the town to inform themselves of possible participants for a meal service. All the meals were prepared by local restaurants and delivered by taxi cabs during the week. Weekends high school student filled the posts. The Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is headquartered in Alexandria, VA. MOWAA is the oldest and largest organization in the U.S. representing those who provide meal services to seniors in need, specifically those at risk of experiencing hunger. Citymeals-on-Wheels serves the New York City Area. In 2008 they delivered over 2.1 MILLION meals to 17,713 frail, aged seniors in every borough. 1,500 volunteers spent 62,000 hours delivering the meals. In 2013, Meals On Wheels in Stoughton had 48 volunteers who put in 1,630 hours delivering 143 homebound individuals 14,540 meals. We also served 197 individuals at the Stoughton Area Senior Center 3,567 meals.

Syttende Mai Information The Senior Center staff along with the Commission on Aging have made the decision to be closed during the Syttende Mai Weekend. The Chamber of Commerce will not be using the space for their head quarters and we have struggled to have successful fund raisers in the last few years. The competition for volunteers and food booths really has proved very difficult for the Senior Center. So with the support of the Commission on Aging we have decided not to use staff time over that weekend. We will be concentrating on other fund raisers throughout the year. Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions or ideas for upcoming fund raisers, please contact Cindy at the Senior Center.
