Member SpotlightGenFed Financial Credit UnionAlyssa Kapfhammer, MSR, Jessica Higdon, MSR, MelissaMcKenney,OfficeManager

What is a credit union?Melissa: A credit union is very similar to a bank, only we don’t have any stockholders. For the consumer, it means thatourprofitsarereturnedtothepeoplethathave accounts at the credit union usually through better loan rates, higher investment rates, and lower fees.

What kind of services do credit unions offer?Melissa: Credit unions vary in the type of services they offer depending on their size and complexity. At GenFed, you’llfindalmostallthesameservicesyouwouldfindat a bank. GenFed offers savings, CDs, loans for real estate, vehicles, etc., IRAs, money market accounts and free checking accounts. GenFed also offers electronic services that are similar to what banks offer including PC and mobile banking and bill paying as well as person to person electronic payments.

Who can use a credit union?Alyssa: You no longer need to work for a certain company to use GenFed Credit Union. GenFed is now available to anyone in Shelby County.

But with only one branch how will I get to my money?Jessica: With our free checking account you also get a free debit card. With that card you can use any of the 8 ATMs in Shelbyville that are in our network, surcharge-free. Also, GenFed is now open from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays!

Why would I want to use GenFed instead of another credit union or bank?Melissa: Our service is top notch and we care about your financialwell-being.Wewanttohelpyoumakethebestfinancialdecisions!Additionally,ourlowloanrateswillsave you money on something new you want to buy, or a loan you might be making payments on right now through another bank. We will work to help you move your loans to GenFed to save you money on monthly loan payments!

What is the best part about GenFed?Melissa: The best part about GenFed is that we care more about our members than we do about our numbers. People are what matter to us, and we are here solely to help. It’s different than many banks where the focus is numbers for stockholders.

Melissa and her husband and daughter reside in St. Paul. Melissa has worked at GenFed since 2011. She has recentlybeenpromotedtoGenFed’sOfficeManager.

Alyssa: I started banking at GenFed in 2005, before I started working at GenFed. I honestly wouldn’t want to bank anywhere else. It’s like when you send your child to school and want them to make sure they have that one-on-one with their teacher. You get that at GenFed. It’s comforting to know that your bank is not just there to get you in and out - we care about our members and try every avenue to help them bettertheirfinances.

Alyssa has worked at GenFed since August 2013. Alyssa and her husband Philip and sons John 6 ½, and Liam 1 year, live in Shelbyville.

Jessica: The best part about GenFed for me is that I now have an opportunity to build my credit. Being young, no one would really pay attention to me. I may not have any credit at all but here at GenFed, I am still given a chance to be able to get a loan with a cosigner and build up my credit. Working here since October has really opened my eyes to a lot ofdifferentfinancialinsights.Nowit’seasierformeto look at my money and know whether I really need to spend it or save it. We help our members make thesesamekindsofimportantfinancialdecisions.

Jessica has been with GenFed since October 2013. Jessica and her boyfriend, Austin, and their dogs, Rebel and Bandit, live in Morristown. She is attending Ivy Tech Community College.
