A Stitch in Time PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY QUILTERS’ GUILD MARCH 2013 HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE! CELEBRATING DOROTHY DUNN (1913-2013) Dorothy Dunn, or Mrs. Dunn as she was respectfully called in our guild, was truly the Grand Dame of the Prince Edward County Quilters’ Guild. She was still producing quilts in her 92nd year, like her ‘Celtic Garden’ shown at our 2004 Quilt Show. Her exquisite work set the high standard that our guild members tried to emulate, and she won more first prizes than anyone cares to remember. By that time, she no longer competed in our quilt shows, saying “It is time for someone else to have a turn.”. Probably true, since there was a time when everybody thought, no point in entering if Mrs. Dunn is entering. Mrs. Dunn’s introduction to quilting started at the tender age of 5 during World War I when her dressmaker mother and her friends were making utility quilts for the red Cross to send over- seas. While they were quilting, little Dorothy was made to sit in a corner and practice tiny stitches, sewing quilt patches together. From a young age, she was exposed to all kinds of hand work, from knitting, crocheting, tatting, and of course dress making, and she soon became profi- cient in all of them. Her mother taught her embroidery at age 10 which appealed to her talent for detail and perfection. She had certainly honed this skill to perfection as evidenced by the in- credible ‘Snow Owl” quilt, recently finished and shown at the display of her work at the 2004 Quilt Show. She left school at 14 and started a 50 career as a milliner, a dying art form today; but her exposure to French fashion firms for all those years was reflected in both her personal style and her exquisite hand work. Mrs. Dunn was born in Quebec and spent her first 6 years on a farm. In 1919, the family moved to Lachine where she later married and had 3 children. In 1964, she moved to Chateauguay where she stayed until 1986. At the age of 73, she moved to Prince Edward County to stay with her daughter, and joined our guild. For years she was in charge of our charity quilts and pro- duced amazing artistic results with all the various orphan blocks from which these quilts were made. Mrs. Dunn received her 70 year pin from the Eastern Star at the celebration of her 100th birth- day. Mrs. Dunn was truly an amazing lady with a wonderful colour sense and artistic ability. She will be missed. (edited from the original essay written by Greta Kristianson in 2004)

President’s Message

A Stitch in Time

Spring is in the air and it might even be on the ground, if it would stop trying to snow! Hello fellow quilters. As I write this I am sipping my coffee and trying to plan my next quilting project. It should be a wed-ding quilt for my youngest son, but I'm not sure that I like the colours they have chosen and so it will probably be something fun and colour-ful in honour of spring.

Your Executive has been hard at work. At our last meeting it was de-cided that the stash donated by Gord Sirot, honour of Connie Sirot would be best used for quilts for Hospice. At the March General Meet-ing on the 20th, I will be asking for volunteers to sit on a committee and meet with Hospice Prince Edward to determine what is needed and then set up a work group to achieve that goal.

UFO days continue to be a priority of mine. I enjoy seeing what every-one is working on and meeting with Guild Members in an informal set-ting. On March 25th, Shirley DeMille will be showing us how to make a thread catcher with large pincushion. It is the same one that I use. A list of materials will be provided for you in the UFO Day notification sent out prior to UFO Day.

At the March meeting, we will see a presentation on Miniature Quilts by Linda Pennington from the Albury Quilting Group. It will be the in-troduction for our President’s Challenge of a Miniature Quilt. I hope that many of you will be able to complete the challenge for the May meeting.

Our Constitution Committee has been hard at work reworking our Constitution. Now is the time to submit any ideas or concerns too any-one on the committee; Jane Cunningham, Chair, Carol Harvey, Secre-tary, Joyce Young, Judy Blemkie, Alfie Deyo, and Maggie Goode. We plan to have the new and improved Constitution approved at the An-nual General Meeting in September.

We are still looking for members to fill the vacant positions on our Ex-ecutive. If you think that you will be able to serve, we would be happy to hear from you. Very soon we need to have a one member or a small group step forward to steer our Quilt Show Committee. Please think about volunteering.

I hope to see many of you at a Guild function in the next few weeks. For those of you on holidays enjoy your time away and we look for-ward to meeting with you soon. Thank you to all the members of our Guild who work to make our events happen. Enjoy the last few weeks of winter as it is prime quilting time. Thanks to all for their support and suggestions. Maggie

Community Outreach Comfort Quilts Meetings at Picton Fabric World on Thursday March 28 at 10 a.m. We need help preparing packets for the members to have fun. Joyce Young

Quilts of Valour If you have signed out a kit from Jan Easton, finished quilts and or tops can be returned to her at the March meeting or dropped off at Picton Fabric World. CFB Trenton has requested 5 quilts for presentation in April, it would be nice to have them from this area. Thank you to all who have contributed to this effort in providing comfort to our wounded military personal. Jan Easton

March meeting (March 20) At our March meeting, we will welcome Linda Pennington. She will pre-sent her trunk show on Miniature quilts and later in the month, we hope to schedule a miniature quilts workshop. All of this is very timely as, at the March meeting, our president, Maggie Goode, will introduce her minia-ture quilt challenge. April Meeting (April 10) In April, we will have a talk by Dr Karen Durell (daughter of our own member Gloria). Karen is a lawyer who specializes in copyright is-sues. She will be talking about some things that we, as quilters, should be aware of concerning use and acknowledgement of patterns. Our Pa-per Bag Challenge will also be introduced at this meeting. May Meeting (May 8) At our May meeting, we will be welcoming pattern designer Brenda Suth-erland to our guild. Brenda designs patterns using different rulers that many of us have sitting in a drawer! The miniature quilts for our chal-lenge are also due this month. June Meeting (June 12) At our last meeting before summer, we will have a chance to enjoy the hard work of the 4H Quilting Club

Workshops

We have completed two successful workshops lead by our members. The first one by Lyne Lusk, was for the Circles Quilt that graced our rack card for our 2012 Quilt Show. Ten members learned about the value flow needed to make the Circle Quilt work. Lyne never sews anything until it is completely designed. I will remember her design advice that, “Cinderella wouldn’t look so beauti-ful if she didn’t have her ugly step-sisters beside her.” Thank you Lyne, for the excellent work-shop !

In February, Diane Filippov lead eleven members through the steps to make a carryall. Even though Diane says she is not a teacher, but the students agreed that she did an excellent job in-structing us in the many steps needed to produce a finished carryall. No matter how easy the pat-tern looked, it was better to have Diane explain the steps. Thank you Diane for the excellent work-shop! No other workshops have been planned, but if you have an idea, especially someone who could do the workshop, I would be happy to hear. - Maggie Goode

PECQG Constitution Review The Prince Edward County Quilters' Guild Constitution & By-Laws were created over 20 years ago by guild members. Thank You to them for their time and effort. It was decided it was time to review the constitution & by-laws. The committee of Jane Cunningham, Carol Harvey, Maggie Goode, Joyce Young, Alfie Deyo and Judy Blemkie have begun the review of the current constitution. We are aiming to have the first draft ready for distribution to members by May 2013. Points we are keeping in mind are: - have consistent language through the document e.g. charity quilts is now known as comfort quilts, therefore ensure that all mention of charity quilts is changed to comfort quilts - that 6 amendments attached to the constitution & by-laws are still relevant and to be inserted into the body of the document in the appropriate location - the impact of technology has changed the way we communicate and it should be reflected in the revised constitution & by-laws - all members have the opportunity to provide information and comment on the content of the revised constitution & by-laws Your comments about changes to the constitution & by-laws are welcomed. Please send them in WRITING (e-mail, Canada Post or hand delivered) to Jane Cunningham, Chair of the PECQG Constitution Committee. I will pass them on to constitution committee members. Please sign your comments so if the committee needs clarification, the correct person can be contacted. Any one who is serving as a committee chair or has served as a committee chair or executive of-ficer are encouraged to provide comments on position descriptions. Some discussion points the committee has had are: - the guild program year and fiscal year are Oct 1st to Sept 30th = should the guild program year be changed (e.g. Aug 1st to June 30th) while guild fiscal year remains Oct 1st to Sept 30th? - the guild has gmail account, a web page and members communicate by e-mail = who in the guild should be responsible for these electronic communications? - how many years does the guild need to keep financial records? At the March 22 committee meeting, the committee will - complete its initial review of the current constitution - discuss the addition of how often the constitution should be reviewed - discuss the addition of a process of how guild assets (financial & tangible) and guild archives should be handled if guild members decide not to have a guild - set a time for their next meeting to review the working document and prepare the first draft Sincerely Jane Cunningham Chair, PECQG Constitution Committee

NEW ON THE LIBRARY SHELF: Quilter’s Academy, Vol. 4 – Senior Year, A Skill-Building Course in Quiltmaking, Harriet Hargrave & Carrie Hargrave

This book presents lessons and projects for the more advance quilter. Each les-son builds on previous lessons. The projects relate to construction and piecing of various patterns such as Eight-Point Star blocks, Lone Stars, etc. Each lessons contains a drafting and designing component with clear pictures and explana-tions of the techniques required to complete the block and projects. The book concludes with instructions on how to design your own blocks, colour and ori-entation, proportion of blocks, and borders with hexagons and stars. This book might be of interest to those who are looking for further skill building with chal-lenging techniques.

Challenges We are happy to report that we had eight participants in our “Everything Old is New Again” challenge due in February. Items ranged from an old dress made into a new nap quilt, sample blocks into wall hangings, a tea cosy into a bag, new borders added to old quilts and a basket, sample block and dress made into twin dolls’ bed complete with coverlet. In our excitement of the evening we neglected to take photos! Our next two challenges are coming up. The Presi-dent’s Challenge of making a miniature quilt is being presented in March and the “Paper Bag” challenge in April. Prizes will be awarded when the results are judged in May and October. Re-member to ask for the schedule of challenges if you do not have one and don’t forget the big challenge of a Star Quilt that is due for the end of May 2014. All that is required is the use of at least three kinds of stars in a bed sized quilt. The rest is up to you.

Looking forward to seeing all the results

Opportunity to Show Your Quilt Just a reminder that the John M. Parrott Art Gallery in the Belleville Public Library is looking for quilts to display in the halls outside the galleries. They are looking for two sizes - large quilts to hang on the wall opposite the elevator and smaller quilts or wall hangings for the area outside the curator's office. The smaller quilts should be less than 6 feet by 8 feet. The large quilts can be quite large. Both sizes should have a hanging sleeve on them. This is a great opportunity to show off your quilts. The hanging period is for two months and the quilts can be for sale (commission charged) or not. Please contact Mary at 613 477 2167 or [email protected] to book your quilt or if you have any questions. I am currently looking for quilts for throughout 2013. Don't be shy!

4H QUILT CLUB The first 4H Quilt Club in 2013 was completed in mid-February. The projects included a pillow top, a doll blanket, a bag, and the beginnings of three bed quilts in the log cabin square. The girls making the bed quilts will continue working on them when we begin the second beginners quilt club for this year. We have eight new members, including one young man, learning how to cut, sew and snip a rag quilt pillow. Our meetings are on Sunday afternoons at the Milford Town Hall on March 17, April 7 and 21, and May 5. We will be holding our 4H Quilting Club Achieve-ment Night at the June Guild meeting (similar to our previous presentations).
