Dear Friend,

When I started Evolving Woman in 1994, I didn’t realize the abundance of health practition-ers in the area. Over the years, I’ve watched as holistic, alternative healers have become more mainstream — and the public in turn has realized their many benefits. Holistic and traditional medi-cine truly can blend and meld to create optimal wellness. Then in 2009, Evolving launched. The number of brave pioneers, willing to put their services forth to the community — energy healers, chiro-

practors, massage therapists, art therapists, wellness centers and so much more — has multiplied. March marks the beginning of our fifth year of publishing. It is such a joyous time for me with the birth of spring, our annual Wellness Directory (inserted inside this issue) and the upcoming annual Health Fair where we honor our readers, writers and advertisers (coming early May). Thank you all for your support throughout the past four years. We have learned, grown, expressed, learned and grown some more. The team I work with on a daily basis, as well as our contributing writers and advertisers, have cre-ated a publication that is truly a joy to produce. The annual Wellness Directory is a resource I hope you will pull out, save and reference whenever you need holistic products or services. The Wellness Directory is passed out all year at events and festivals, plus is online at www.EvolvingMagazine.com. Kansas City is truly blessed to have such an abundance of talented prac-titioners and my hope is that we will all live healthier lives by utilizing their services. For reminders of upcoming events and to stay in touch, “like” Evolving Magazine on Facebook.

Bethany Klug DO is Now HealthSpan!

Bethany Klug, DO is changing her name to HealthSpan. Why? Our lifespan may be longer today, but our healthspan — how long we live with vibrant health — is shorter. Our goal is to help you en-joy a lifespan of health, thus the name HealthSpan. Did you know that by the time you have symptoms, a disease process may be up to 80 percent complete? Yet, most people don’t enter the medical system until they have symptoms because it is a disease care system. It’s too little too late. We have a different vision. Our aspi-ration is for everyone to enjoy a long healthspan, a lifespan of health. Seventy percent of all doctor visits are com-plaints with a lifestyle related cause. This statistic inspires us to take a long-term

and holistic view of your health. We’re implementing research-based early dis-ease identification, prevention and re-versal programs that include identifying markers of early disease and genetic testing as well as what we’ve been doing successfully for years: hormone balanc-ing, nutritional support, therapeutic diets, homeopathy, biodynamic cranial work and stress reduction. Our HealthSpan Be Well Center is key to this vision. Our Be Well Center aims to help you lengthen your health-span with education in FMMS-right food, right movement, right mind-state and right sleep. Our nutrition and cook-ing classes will be starting soon. Go to www.healthspankc.com and subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to know! HealthSpan is located in the Capitol Federal Savings building at 1900 W 75th ST, STE 250 in Prairie Village. Contact HealthSpan at 913-642-1900 or [email protected]

By welcoming the power and love of the angels into your life, you are opening yourself up to finding your life purpose and true fulfillment. Men and woman are empowered to walk in the under-world of their own fears to gain power, playful passion, magnetism and an abil-ity to manifest their own desires. Until we restore the Goddess to her rightful place beside her Beloved as a conscious equal partner, we will carry within us a

Beyond the Blues Mental Health Fundraiser

The sixth annual Beyond the Blues fundraiser for Mental Health America of the Heartland will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 6 to 10 p.m. Far from a stuffy fundraiser, Beyond the Blues is an exclusive blast from the past in an exclusive venue. It’s a rare opportunity to tour the Armacost Muse-um in Grandview, a private collection of rare antique automobiles encompassing two floors: from a 1910 International to a Ferrari Testarossa — plus an extensive

array of antique pedal cars, motorcycles, bicycles, gas-powered toys and automo-tive-related memorabilia. Making a rare appearance, the Blues Notions, Kansas City’s Gentlemen of Jump, will be joined by saxmen Joe Mi-quelon (the Elders), Dr. Todd Wilkinson (Ottawa University professor, former Boko Maru bandleader) and Special Guest Millie Edwards (Wild Women of Kansas City). A night of dancing, barbecue, a cash bar, the Lindy Hop dancers and cool auction/raffle items, tickets are limited to 250 ($40, advance only) at www.beyondtheblueskc.org or (913) 281-2221.

Tax-deductible sponsorships and auction/raffle items are welcomed. Con-tact Connie “Crash” Humiston, Event Coordinator, at (816) 591-3378. Mental Health America of the Heart-land (www.mhah.org) serves more than 26,000 people in Kansas City, eastern Kansas and western Missouri. Beyond the Blues proceeds help support the youth suicide prevention program; ad-vocacy, education and support services, including family, consumer and profes-sional education; peer-to-peer services, including the agency’s consumer “drop in center,” Warmline (hotline); and four permanent supportive housing proper-ties.

O ur recent pot luck party displayed a marvel of gourmet delights. Guests sampled vegan dishes, gluten-free pizza, dairy-

free delights, meat sauce in pasta shells, and desserts with no gluten, no dairy and no sugar. Rich, gooey chocolate for the sweet palate graced the table. As this magazine’s audience is fully informed on pros and cons of nutrition, no need for more. Instead, I focus on attitude which blew-me-over when I heard it at a seminar called “Secrets of Longevity.” The key take away: Watch out for the toxic attitude or ego ploy that young is good; old is bad; body-beautiful rules; and the air-of-superiority, “My diet is better than yours because I am a (fill in the blank) a vegan, a vegetarian, dairy free, sugar free, etc.” Often unrecognized, what really frightens me most is pain and suffering or infirmity, not older age. We buy into the scripts that say since grandma died of heart disease so I must be doomed. Can you tell a new story such as, “My body is wise and it knows how to mend?” And deeper yet: Life is eternal. I keep my body healthy as home to my soul. A true case: An auto-immune illness burdened a family member. She chose to go on a strict cleansing diet; indeed a good choice. She took on a controlling and annoying tone at holiday time. “That glass of wine hurts your liver!” she would nag or “That sugar ruins your colon!” We finally sat and talked about this and I asked her to stop. She did.

Some hide fears in veils of superiori-ty. Unfortunately that ego ploy is short lived and wounds the spirit. To avoid that, add quality to your life with these choices:

• Move the four elements. Air. Breathe deep and full, expelling toxins that linger in base of lungs (yogis call this the “tidal” air). Do 20 full diaphragmatic breaths 3x/day. Breathe to the side ribs. Breathe into your upper back skin.

• Water. You know this one. 98 per-cent of us are dehydrated. Ideally, we should urinate every two to three hours. Drink water with the intent of how good it is for you. Blood is water element. We need to “move the blood” with gentle exer-cise. Yoga and massage keep the

lymphatic system clear. Organs are mostly water. In that regard, we need to exercise our brains: think new thoughts; read new material.

• We thrive on moderate amounts of sunlight for our mood and Vitamin D absorption. This “fire” is good for us. You know the rules on sun-screens — no parabens, etc.

• Earth element is personal to each of us. Some need meat, others do not. The key is to eat foods from your heritage. What foods are in your traditions? Ironically, sleep is part of the Earth as we need to rest and dream. Find the amount of sleep that works for you.

To round out the choices from our wellness buffet, trust we thrive on mean-ingful work, volunteerism and/or hob-

bies. One of our yoga staff drives seniors to class. How kind and productive is that? Last, strive to be happy. When we are stuck in worry and self-pity, we are stuck. The room you are in is the same for everyone. As the warnings say, “Do not drive heavy equipment while using this drug.” It’s ditto with self-pity and bad attitudes. Spirituality, including the food we eat with gratitude, involves the greatest freedom…to enjoy a good life. Suzette Scholtes has won awards for her

writing including the prestige “Writers Digest” award for non-fiction. Her passion is writing and teaching. At the Yoga School, she directs the yoga teaching methods based on the 8000 year old yoga tradition of yoga health

and happiness, whether 18 or 80. Here, be met with a smile and learn to love your life. At 10400 W. 103rd Street,

I n thinking about inner peace the words of the song, “Let There Be Peace On Earth” began ringing in my brain. I wondered about the origins

of the song. It was written by Jill Jack-son Miller and Sy Miller in 1955. What a surprise to discover that Jill was born in Missouri and attended Northeast High School and junior college in Kansas City. She moved to California to pursue a career in acting. Her mother died when she was three. Her biography states that her child-hood was traumatic. Her adulthood, following a painful divorce, was dedi-cated to creating peace. Her story is very moving and demonstrates that adversity can be-come a catalyst for us to find inner peace, transforming our obstacles into something positive. Many famous people have sung this song over the years influencing millions of people worldwide. In September, 2009 a new book and CD for children was pub-lished; Let There Be Peace On Earth and Let it Begin with Me, illustrated by Caldicott Award winning artist Da-vid Diaz. Just how does one find this inner peace? Herbert Benson wrote The Relaxation Response in 1975 intro-ducing people to the idea of taking time each day to stop, breathe, relax the body and calm the mind. Jon Kabat-Zim, a psychologist, has done much research, writing and teaching

on the efficacy of mindfulness medita-tion. Tim Ryan, a congressman, has re-cently published A Mindful Nation encouraging people to take the magi-cal 20 minute break to find that inner peace, changing the world one person at a time. Recently in the New York Times, Tony Schwartz wrote an article, Relax! You’ll Be More Productive. In this article he cites research indicating that taking daily naps, more vacations and taking a break every 90 minutes will maximize the effectiveness of eve-rything we do. He writes, “The im-portance of restoration is rooted in our physiology. Human beings aren’t designed to expend energy continu-ously. Rather, we’re meant to pulse between spending and recovering en-ergy.” Dr. Ernest Rossi talks about this neurobiological clock in The 20 Mi-nute Break: Using the New Science of the Ultradian Rhythms. This is the

Basic Rest Activity Cycle (BRAC) that occurs every 90-120 minutes in our waking and sleep states. Taking a 20 minute break every 90-120 minutes would be optimal for all of us. Since that is not always possible, Tony suggests that every 90 minutes we change our activity, taking a break. He cited his own experience of taking about a year to write a book when he was writing 10 hours a day uninter-rupted. When he changed his routine to take breaks every 90 minutes work-ing only half a day; he completed a book in six months. The Neurobehavioral Programs created by Dr. John Leonard teach skills of reducing stress or pain, nega-tive emotions, releasing trauma and connecting with the inner self. (neurobehavioralprograms.com) This is one of the tools I use successfully to help people focus inward. Whether you take a walk, exercise, do the ‘relaxation response’, mindful-ness meditation or some form of

stress reduction, your life will be dif-ferent if you make it a daily habit. When I am teaching the NBP program I say to people, “If you practice, it works. If you don’t, it doesn’t.” This may sound simplistic — but it’s true. Joan Borysenko tells us, “Without peace of mind, life is just a shadow of its possibilities. Your inner peace can change you and your environment. Take the plunge and let peace begin with you. Jude LaClaire, Ph.D., LCPC, LCSW is an educator, counselor and author. D epression used to have a very good outcome. If you went to your physician with symptoms of depression 30 to 40 years ago, he or she

would tell you that you could and would get better. You’d be assured that most depres-sion episodes run their course without specific interventions such as drug treat-ment. When it comes to side effects, many people are aware of the most common ones, such as sexual dysfunction and sleep-lessness. And if you go back to the TV, you’ll see that some of these negative ef-fects are mentioned in the ads – albeit so quickly you don’t really have time to think about them. Or those others, like substan-tial weight gain and increased glucose and lipid metabolism. Exercise: One of Nature’s Best Alter-natives to Maintaining Good Mental Health A Duke University team studied three groups that tried exercise only; exercise plus drugs; and drugs only, to see what treatment best treated depression. They found that after six weeks, the drug-only group was doing a tiny bit better than the other two groups. The drug used was Zoloft. They hypothesized that the best stay-well rate would be those with drugs plus exercise--but, they were wrong! Ten months later, it was the exercise-only group that was most successful in main-taining wellness! In fact, according to a September 22, 2000 Duke University press release: “After demonstrating that 30 minutes of brisk exercise three times a week is just as effective as drug therapy in relieving the symptoms of major depression in the short term, medical center researchers have now shown that continued exercise greatly re-duces the chances of the depression return-ing. The new study, which followed the same participants for an additional six months, found that patients who continued to exer-cise after completing the initial trial were much less likely to see their depression return than the other patients..? Only eight percent of patients in the exercise group had their depression return, while 38 percent of the drug-only group and 31 percent of the exercise-plus-drug group relapsed.” Nutrition Also Plays an Important Part It’s already known that many additives, preservatives and food colorants can cause behavioral changes, and sugar should defi-nitely be on this list as well. One of the most recent and highly plausible theories that explain sugar's impact on your mood and mental health is the connection be-tween sugar and chronic inflammation.

Other studies have also found significant links between high-sugar diets and mental health problems such as depression and schizophrenia, even though they were not focused on the presence of inflammation per se. A 2004 study published in the Brit-ish Journal of Psychiatry found that a high-er dietary intake of refined sugar and dairy products predicted a worse 2-year outcome of schizophrenia. As explained by Dr. Russell Blaylock, high sugar content and starchy carbohy-drates lead to excessive insulin release, which can lead to falling blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia, in turn, causes your brain to secrete glutamate in levels that can cause agitation, depression, anger, anxiety, panic attacks and an in-crease in suicide risk. The dietary answer for treating depression is to severely limit sugars, especially fructose, as well as grains. How the Sun Can Influence a “Sunnier Disposition” Another essential nutrient in the treat-ment of depression is vitamin D. One study found people with the lowest levels of vita-min D were 11 times more prone to be de-pressed than those who received healthy doses. I strongly recommend optimizing your vitamin D levels, by sunlight and tak-ing a high-quality vitamin D supplement. What To Do if You’re Already on Medication for Depression What you want is a cautious approach to discontinuing prescription drugs – and you need to do this with the assistance of a qualified and knowledgeable clinician who can slowly wean you off them over a period of a few weeks or months. Ideally, this would be someone who has roots in natural health, and who will help you use natural, healthy options such as dietary changes, exercise, and some energy psychology ap-proaches to do this. Always remember that these three pri-mary factors -- exercise, addressing emo-tional stress, and eating right -- will make you feel at the top of your game. Whether you want to overcome depression, feel hap-pier or just want to stay healthy, these are the lifestyle changes that will get you there. P orchetta is a savory, fatty and moist boneless pork roast of Ital-ian culinary tradition. The body of the pig is gutted (skin re-tained), then de-boned, arranged

carefully with layers of stuffing and/ or season-ings, rolled and spitted or roasted. Porchetta is usually heavily salted in addition to being stuffed with garlic, rosemary, fennel, or other (often wild) herbs. Porchetta has been selected by the Italian Ministero delle Politiche Agricole, as one of a list of traditional Italian foods held to have cultural relevance. Proprietor, Alex Pope, retains this Italian tradition, along with his devotion to locally sourced food products, in this signature dish.

diet. One processed food, howev-er, is often overlooked by even the most health conscious: protein powder. Protein powder is derived from high protein foods such as milk, soybeans, eggs, peas and rice. Chemicals and high heat, much higher than normal cooking tem-peratures are required. This pro-cess damages the proteins. Your body mounts an immune response against these damaged proteins that over time can cause an in-flammatory chain reaction that may lead to just about any chronic disease including heart disease, diabetes and autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. The most common protein powders are made from the milk proteins casein and whey. Casein, in my experience, is the greatest promoter of inflammation of the foods we commonly eat. This in-flammation can lead to autoim-munity and, according to the Chi-na Study, even cancer. It’s impos-sible to separate casein fully from whey, so there is always casein in whey protein powder even if it isn’t listed on the label. Protein doesn’t occur alone in nature. Without the naturally oc-curring starch, fat and micronutri-ents of the whole food, protein powders promote an overly acid state in the body. This stresses the entire body, particularly the kid-neys and liver, and can cause oste-oporosis. I question the need for protein powders. The diet in the United States is rich in protein. Many people do not absorb protein well, a reflection of poor digestive health, but that problem cannot be solved by eating more protein. One cannot argue the conven-ience of protein powder. So what whole foods are high in protein that can be easily scooped into a blender or shaker bottle? Chia Seeds: A complete protein, meaning it contains all the amino acids your body cannot make by itself, and must get from food.

Chia seeds contain omega-3 and omega-6 in the optimal 4:1 ratio. I like adding them to drinks. In about 10 minutes, they swell and congeal, creating a bubble tea like consistency. A high speed blender will grind them up completely and thicken the smoothie. Chia seeds are the base for my winter break-fast porridge. Hemp seeds: Another complete protein with a 4:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. Hemp seeds are rich in vitamin E, plant sterols, trace minerals, GLA, an anti-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acid and are considered easy to absorb and digest. I grind hemp seeds in a coffee grinder just before use to preserve the omega-3 fatty acids and I store them in the freezer. Spirulina: A blue-green algae and another easily absorbed com-plete protein. Spirulina balances blood sugar and can support weight loss. Due to it’s chlorophyll content, spirulina promotes an alkaline pH. I recommend Health-source, Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifi-ca and nuts.com for good tasting spirulina powder. Always add spir-ulina to liquid, and then blend to avoid a thick oily mess at the bot-tom of your shaker bottle or blender. I add it to smoothies, fresh juice or lemon water. It’s really green so check the mirror before you leave home!

Unintentional Vibrational Healers: That’s the Power of Love

I am always interested in ways to link the'wellness',

which is created in vibrational healing sessions, to

everyday life. I believe bridging the two experiences

is a key to increasing wellness and vitality. For

example, when you go to receive an energy session

from someone, you feel ready to receive from the moment you walk in.

The space and vibration is prepared and you are instantly ready to open

up and let it happen. Wonderful!

The only challenge is when we leave the space that we associated

with healing. We get back out on the road and return to our daily life.

Pressures and responsibilities seep in. Yet the problem isn’t our daily

life, rather our belief that healing and wellness only happens in one

context and not in another.

We have all heard a thousand times that energy is unlimited, is

unrestricted to location or situation. So, what about receiving vibration-

al healing outside of the sessions? First, let’s define vibrational healing

as follows: using one’s vibration (love) with the intent to support anoth-

er person. What happens? It brings a body into a higher vibrational

state, feeling more balanced, aligned, centered and clear.

Perhaps you have heard the term ‘vibrational healing’ used inter-

changeably with sound healing? Sound healing is just a teeny part of the

whole that is vibrational healing – sound healing uses modalities you

can hear and feel (both physically and etherically). ALL healing modal-

ities are vibrational, and whenever you allow your love to shine bright

you are a vibrational healer. Yes everyone is a vibrational healer--even

if unintentionally!

I find it so magical and refreshing to come across people who I call,

“unintentional vibrational healers.” These are the people effortlessly

letting their light shine into their daily life and tasks, those who can find

magic in the mundane. This is so inspiring! In our 3D World, the battles

of the soul are not fought in workshops, seminars or sessions, they take

place in our homes, offices, or behind the wheel of the car and so on.

In a world where the majority of people are rushing from A to B and

behaving as functionally as possible, each of these "unintentional vibra-

tional healers" is an oasis. It is heart-warming to witness someone

performing the tasks of their life with simple joy. For example, one of

the greatest unintentional vibrational healers I’ve met, is the manager at

a wonderful Indian restaurant in Overland Park, KS, is the manager at a

wonderful Indian restaurant, Korma Sutra, at College and Metcalf in

Overland Park. As soon as you walk in, Singh (apt name!) greets you

by singing his own song called “Happy Days”, As soon as you walk in,

he greets you by singing his own song called “Happy Days;” and sec-

onds later you will magically be holding a cup of chai tea and a vegeta-

ble pakora in your hands. His humor brightens everyone’s mood, and

after a great meal he sends you home with a balloon. Yes, a balloon!

People like this are great examples to all of us on the spiritual path.

Their soul expression doesn’t come out of a book; and, they may never

know they are referred to in this way. This is their natural way of being

which goes beyond ‘customer service’ and even beyond pride in doing a

good job. This is about sharing unconditional love and the alchemy that

is created from that.

You have all met people like this, people who gave you a loving

smile when no one else did. Smiling is one of the simplest and most

effective vibrational tools we have. Everyone has changed someone’s

life, at least once, by smiling at them. With a smile you can turn

someone’s bad day into a manageable, or perhaps even a good day. The

wonders we can create with the pure vibration of love are limitless.

So the next time you receive a healing session, and leave floating on

air, remember you can maintain this frequency by connecting with the

thousands of 'unintentional vibrational healers' around you. You will

find them anywhere from the grocery store to your local repair shop;

and, just by seeing people in this light it will spark the loving healer

within you. Everyone wins!

Consider that every day, over a hundred people leave an Indian

restaurant in Kansas happier than they walked in, then unknowingly go

on to bring this happy energy to the next people they see. All because of

one manager who spreads love, light and joy, and makes food appear

out of nowhere. It may just be this generation’s ‘loaves and fishes’!

Be an unintentional vibrational healer. That’s the power of love.

Tools for Raising

Your Vibration

♦ Smile. Even if you are by yourself.

♦ Place one hand on your solar plexus and one hand on

the back of your head and breathe out sharply through

nose three times

♦ Make up a song to a tune you already know, changing

the words to be about things you want to bring into

your life.

♦ Dance.

♦ Find a way to laugh.

♦ Share with a friend or loved one. Just get the energy

moving.

♦ Check in with yourself regularly you feel.

♦ Be honest with yourself about your shadow side. Love

it and allow it to have a voice (instead of pretending it

is not there).

♦ Increase water intake. Decrease caffeine intake.

♦ Share gratitudes with self or others.

♦ Take three deep breaths. Holding each breath for a

count of five.

♦ Take a moment to remember something funny or

heartwarming

♦ Move your body.

♦ Say a prayer for someone else.

♦ Give a compliment.

♦ Do a selfless act.

♦ Have a conversation with friends. One of you does an

Elmo voice. One of you does a Cookie Monster voice.

♦ Clear your home and auric field regularly

♦ Pick up trash in the street

We Observe Things into Form

“It takes zero faith. What it takes is imagination.

To bring anything into life, imagine that it’s al-

ready there. If it’s clear in your thought, it is even

this moment barreling down on you like a Mack

truck.”

— RICHARD BACH, AUTHOR OF ILLUSIONS

AND OTHER METAPHYSICAL NOVELS

I f you ask me, learning how to

transform energy is so important it

should be taught along with read-

ing, writing, and arithmetic. And it

all starts with intent, the force that

lies behind everything. It’s the energy, the fuel,

the electric charge that sets up a resonant field

and sends out probability waves into the Field

of Potentiality. Esther Hicks who channels the

Abraham-Hicks material calls it “launching a

rocket of desire.” Giving it attention adds mass.

The minute you make an intention, you cre-

ate it. It’s instantaneous. It exists as an actual

thing. You don’t see it yet because you’re still

operating from linear time. You’re still sold on

the old-school adage that “creating things takes

time.” So you keep working and waiting. You

keep following the seven steps from the latest

self-help book.

But here’s what physicists tell us. Things, in

the quantum world, do not happen in steps.

They happen immediately.

So the thing you intend, the minute you

intend it, exists, but like Schrödinger’s cat, a

famous thought experiment devised in 1935 by

Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger, you’re

only aware of the reality you choose to observe.

The physical manifestation remains enfolded

outside your current consciousness.

Cutting-edge physicists tells us that life is

multidimensional. But most of us are stuck in

our one-dimensional physical reality, restricted

to what we experience with our five senses.

What we experience with these alleged foolproof

tools of observation are nothing but what we

decide to look for. It’s not even a chicken-or-egg

question. What we see, experience, and feel with

our five senses always comes after the decision

to see, experience, and feel it.

I liken consciousness to a giant skyscraper. I

may be living on the second floor, but the

“thing” I created with my thought is up on the

17th floor. Until I can get to the 17th floor, it

appears that it’s still missing, that I’m still

waiting.

Another great analogy is a television set. If

you have cable, more than 100 channels are

yours for the clicking. TiVo aside, you can only

watch one channel at a time. When you’re

watching, say, Modern Family, you’re chuckling

at the antics of Cam, Mitchell, Phil, and Gloria

and you’re completely unaware of the other 99

(or more) channels. That’s why it’s really im-

portant to stay on the channel you want. Don’t

give any airtime to the reality from which

you’re trying to escape. Tune in only to your

intent.

The Laundry List of Reasons We Dial into a

Program We Don’t Like

“We live in a world that worships limitations.”

— TAMA KIEVES, AUTHOR OF THIS TIME I

DANCE!

1. We’re not really here—not in “this mo-

ment.” The now is the point of power. That’s

why it’s so easy for a yogi, who consciously

clears out mental static, to change his heart

rate, pulse, and other body functions. If you’re

not really here, your mind is not available to do

what you’re asking it to do. It’s imperative to

practice conscious, moment-by-moment aware-

ness. Otherwise, you’re operating out of the old

encrusted beliefs, beliefs you downloaded before

you were five years old. Do you really want a

five-year-old running your life?

I liken consciousness to a giant skyscraper. I may be living

on the second floor, but the “thing” I created with my thought is

up on the 17th floor. Until I can get to the 17th floor, it appears

that it’s still missing, that I’m still waiting.

Page 13: March 2013 Evolving

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 13 March 2013

When I find my consciousness operating

outside “the now,” which is unfortunately a

great percentage of the time, I gently remind

myself of this analogy: The UPS driver just de-

livered to my house every single thing I’ve ever

wanted, but because I’ve left the building, I

don’t even realize it. I’m out hunting for paltry

substitutes. Everything is right there, once I

bring my consciousness back to the timelessness

of “now.”

2. We’ve named it difficult. The power to

create with our thoughts is a piece of cake.

That’s not even up for debate. But we keep tell-

ing our friends and especially ourselves that it’s

hard or that we’re still working on it. Just no-

tice in the next couple of days how often you

affirm that it’s “hard” or “challenging.” Pay

attention to how often you say, “Things have

always been like that,” or “It runs in my fami-

ly.” We spend so much time talking about what

doesn’t work that we miss the whole point:

namely, that we have the power to create some-

thing that does.

3. We stalk negativity. What do we study?

Disease, problems, disasters of the past. What

do we prepare for? Emergencies. We love to

sink our teeth into problems and ask, “What’s

wrong?” It’s an old-school model that sorely

needs transformation. Once we begin to look for

what’s right, our lives begin spinning in unim-

aginably exciting new directions.

And here’s the truth. Every “wrong” thing,

which in reality is nothing but a foolhardy

judgment, has a flip side. Lack is the flip slide

of abundance. Sickness is the flip side of health.

Both ideas exist at the same time. Both are

true. By choosing to see one aspect, the other

equally likely aspect is hidden.

Unfortunately, while living in the con-

sciousness of space and time, you can only ob-

serve one side of the coin at a time. But it’s im-

portant to realize that the other side is just as

real and that any time, you can simply flip it

over. Opposites (e.g., abundance/lack) are both

true. It’s a question of which reality you’d ra-

ther live from.

4. By George, we think we’ve got it. Once

you define something, you no longer question

it. Once you know something, it becomes your

reality. But knowing anything is exceedingly

restrictive. In quantum speak, it collapses the

wave, leaving no room for mystery, wonder,

and new discoveries. Think about it. If one of

your arms is filled with books and the other

with a bag of groceries, it’s impossible to pick

up anything else. You may have a lot of

knowledge and a bunch of academic degrees,

framed and hanging on the second floor of that

skyscraper. But remember there are lots of oth-

er “floors” (that is, dimensions) and all that you

“know” can block potentialities.

5. The mind is so powerful that it can create

something “outside” itself to be more powerful

than it is. That’s why it’s essential when doing

the experiments to suspend judgment long

enough to believe they’ll work. If you’re con-

vinced they’re a family-size bucket of bull,

you’ll collect data to support that viewpoint.

6. We haven’t really practiced. Using the FP

to direct your life is not an intellectual exercise.

It’s not a theory. It’s a practice. Like mastering

scales. Or learning to play Ping-Pong. Tiger

Woods may have only been 18 when he won the

U.S. Amateur Championship, but he’d already

racked up 16 years of practice. And he still de-

votes many hours a day to conditioning and

practice. You cannot know wisdom. You can

only be wisdom. And that’s where this book

comes in.

The Colorful World of Wellness

R ecently, I received a phone call from some-one who had several questions about a color care system that I have

worked with for the last ten years. She asked, “What is it? When did it start? Where do the ingredients come from? Why does it work? Who created it?” These are all good questions! But explaining Chromotherapy, sometimes called color therapy, colorology or cromatherapy, is not a linear process. Color therapy has a long history. The use of color for healing has been an integral part of ancient Egyptian and Greek therapies as well as Chinese, Indi-an and Ayurveda medicine. The Spectro Chrometry Encyclopedia: A Definitive Work On Color Therapy, was wri/en in 1933 by an Indian scientist Dinshah Ghadiali, laying the foundation for most of modern color therapy. We know that color is light vibrat-ing at different frequencies. Everything is vibration; color is vibration that we see. There are volumes wri/en on color and vibration, some of which we will explore here. Science now tells us that not only is every particle of ma/er, or every mass of ma/er, in a state of con-tinual vibration, but also that light, heat, magnetism, electricity and every other form of natural force results from a state of vibration. Healing modalities like Oriental Medicine, Homeopathic, and even mod-ern chemistry have utilized color thera-py. Swiss-born physician, Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), popularly known as Paracelsus, anticipated the basic disciplines that constitute modern medicine--pharmacy, physiology, biochemistry and drug-therapy. His work, the “Science of Sig-natures,” states that everything in nature is described or marked. That is, the out-er appearance of the plant gives clues to its characteristics indicating how that agent may be used in medicine. This is called the signatum, or signature. The color of the plant is a vital part of the signature. For instance, yellow plants are used to treat the liver, since the bile is yellow-orange. Red plants are medicines for the blood, blue cools a fever, purple

is for septic infections, etc. The shape of a plant part can also be significant. Be-cause the orchid has roots shaped like testicles (orchis) it is a medicine for these parts. "The virtue is signed in the form, figure, corpus and substance," writes Paracelsus, "that through the signature the interior may be opened" and the "wisdom in the virtue made known.” Here are a few more places you can look for information:

• The Language of Plants: A Guide to the Doctrine of Signatures by Julia Graves (2012)

• The Theory of Five Elements by Zou Yen (476-221 BC)

• Vibrational Medicine by Richard Gerber, M.D.

• www.homeorizon.com/homeopathy For centuries the mystics have been using color and light to teach us. You will find references to the power of color in the Old Testament, the Tibet Book of the Dead, Yogic traditions of India and from indigenous people all over the world. These references in sacred texts to color, light and vibration are abun-dant from ancient times to the present. “Use the light that is in you to re-cover your natural clearness of sight.” Lao Tsu Johanna Wolfgang von Goethe,

the famous poet, novelist, playwright, natural philosopher, diplomat and civil servant said of his Theory of Colours (1810) “As to what I have done as a poet,… I take no pride in it… But that in my century I am the only person who knows the truth in the difficult science of colours – of that, I say, I am not a li/le proud.” His writings remained of intense interest to a cohort of prominent philosophers and physicists, including Arthur Schopenhauer, Kurt Gödel, and Ludwig Wi/genstein. If we bring all of this history of color and light forward to the twentieth cen-tury we find AURA-SOMA®, the sys-tem I work with. In 1984, the vision of its creation was bestowed upon Vicky Wall. Aura-Soma is a modern day sys-tem that harmoniously combines color with the innate healing properties of the natural world. Using the vibrational element of each component as part of a key to unlock the door to consciousness, the un-intrusive beauty of the Aura-Soma system empowers each individual to recognize his or her vibratory make-up within the chosen colors. Vicky, a surgical chiropodist and pharmacist was 66 years of age when she created the first Aura-Soma bo/les. She had no idea what she was doing when she found herself in her small laboratory formulating a mixture com-prising different layers and colors of the most natural ingredients she could find. This marked the birth of ‘Equilibrium’. Vicky later reported that

other hands had guided her own. Being blind, she could see neither the beautiful jewels she had spontaneously and inspi-rationally created nor their possible in-tended purposes. Sometime later she said, “They realized that it was not just colour therapy depending on the healing vibrations of colour; but a powerful new-old concept that held within it the an-cient alchemy of the apothecary wherein lay the secrets of field and forest, the herbs, the flowers, the resins.” Aura-Soma Self-Discovery Through Color by Vickie Wall (1991/2005) As a mirror of the soul, Aura-Soma reflects (an aspect of) the soul's purpose during this lifetime, the lessons an indi-vidual has chosen to experience, the gifts gained and the tools to achieve fulfillment of these desired objectives. Through our color choices we can see our true reflection, minus the ego and all the shackles of this lifetime. The par-ticular color of the Aura-Soma bo/le we choose is always the one we most need, and the one that will most enhance and clarify where we currently are in our spiritual process. “You are the colours you choose and these reflect your being's needs.” Vickie Wall Leiola Reeder

Balancing a Busy Work Life with a Successful Private Life

T his writer is an expert on at

least one of the three parts

of the above title: Balance,

Busy Work Life, Successful

Private Life. In the spirit of

vulnerability and transparency, I admit to an

embarrassing experience several weeks ago. After

burning the proverbial "work candle" at both

ends, the flames finally met in the middle on a

day when I was scheduled to give a talk on this

very topic. It was a day I hope to someday be

able to forget, although I sense it will be with

me as a source of embarrassment for a while. Of

course I will get over it and people will forget

or they won’t; however, in the scheme of all

things important — it doesn’t really matter.

What matters is that I immediately made some

changes. First, I cut back on being so busy.

Second, I committed to cooking for myself be-

cause I know that my personal food choices are

all about eating to live, versus living to eat.

Then, of utmost importance, I called a friend

and we went dancing. I could not recall over a

three-year period when I might have last kicked

up my heels and shaken the old tail feather. It

seems the tail feather was languishing in a

closet with the dancing shoes. Do you remember

dancing as a fond memory, or a recent memory —

because your feet still hurt from last night’s

salsa dancing?

Very recently I became aware of a book by

Tom Rath and Jim Harter, Well Being: The Five

Essential Elements. I could say, "Where were you

a few weeks ago when exhaustion was preventing a

normal level of coherence in my thought pro-

cess!" According to Rath and Hartner, well-being

must be interdependent in five areas of our

lives (Career, Social, Financial, Physical and

Community). I would add balance in some form of

Spiritual practice, be it attending the church

or synagogue or other form of organized worship

of your choice; yoga; meditation; prayer, etc--

an activity that works for you that creates a

connection to something greater than self.

For some people it is very easy for career

and work responsibilities to overtake the other

important areas that contribute to well being

(especially if you really love your work). There

are those individuals who enjoy seeking physical

fitness to the point it can overshadow balance

in other areas of life (I should be so afflict-

ed). Still others are consumed with either

spending their financial abundance or squirrel-

ing it away at the expense of sharing and paying

it forward through community endeavors.

Does your plate need side-boards to hold

all of the wonderful, fun, responsible, progres-

sive, duty-bound activities that have been sad-

dled onto your calendar? Let’s review these

important areas that Rath, Hartner and I deem

critical to our well-being. Note: This writer

has no association with the writers of the book

that I have found very helpful. I am sharing a

tool in an assortment of available tools as well

as my own wisdom and experience.

• Career – It helps to like what you do every

day. Joyful engagement with our work, with a

sense of humor, is easy on the stomach acid

and adrenal glands (stress can really hurt

us…ok, stress can kill us).

• Social – I feel it is very important to be

able to receive love, as well as give love

in healthy, honoring relationships. I am

keeping a wide parameter around the defini-

tion of relationship because it serves no

one to limit the scope--parent/child, adult/

young person, platonic, professional, sexu-

al, etc. Let’s consider ourselves blessed

if we have opportunities to show that we

care and someone does the same for us.

• Financial – Manage our money well, and not

let our money manage us. This element of

well-being filters over into all the other

areas; so, even when the budget screams from

being stretched, hang on and know that

things will be better, sooner than later.

• Physical – Good health, just do what it

takes (mumble and fuss if you must, but do

it). The reward is pretty cool.

• Community – Engage where you live. This is

one of my favorite tools that Rath and Hart-

ner extol. I have lived in a few different

cities and firmly believe we should bloom

where we find ourselves planted.

• Spiritual – You fill in the blank. My fa-

vorite comes from God Calling, 2013 Edition,

January 26: …keep your Spirit Life unruf-

fled. Nothing else matters …

• I have shared with you my experience of a

book that I feel is worth the read. If you

already feel out of balance, then begin to

consider how you might regain your balance

before you find yourself “in the grip.”

Time for self is always a good place to

start (dust off your dancing shoes).

These essential elements of well-being are

presented to you, from the authors and from me,

as a means for honoring the Essential You!

Again, I have no monetary or other interest in

the book. I simply happen to agree with the au-

thors’ premise for living a balanced life. I

wish you all an abundance of well-being as we

share each other’s path in 2013.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Be careful of blurting ideas or taking radical actions before you’ve contemplated implica-tions – especially at work! Medi-tate on any impulses that seem “awesome!” – and also consult a trusted person. It’s probably best to wait until April, when your energy is less tense. Things might shake out in your favor, even if you don’t do anything. Your dreams are very powerful right now, so look for guidance there too.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You might feel a vague sense of restlessness or irritability. You could even experience random anger. Please meditate, since all these emotions are stemming from unresolved past events that are bubbling up from your sub-conscious so you can heal them! Even do some journal writing about how you are disappointed with the Universe for not ful-filling certain wishes. Once you get in touch with the roots of our feelings, you can let it all go. Your heart will open and you’ll feel relaxed, loving and hopeful!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Confusion or frustration at work will clear up once Mercury goes direct mid-month! You can also heal trust issues with friends that came from misunderstandings. It’s a great time to go out of your comfort zone in terms of making

new friends, or trying out differ-ent activities or hobbies. In med-itation, ponder your goals and hopes. You’ve evolved a lot over the past few months, so update your vision of your future too! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Your meditation and creative vis-ualizations could be paying off in your career! You could have an exciting opportunity to advance or to work with someone very important. Don’t let fear make you hesitate! This is the moment you’ve been waiting for, so move ahead right away! Also, your in-tuition is strong now, and you could have breakthroughs with relationship issues. Trust your gut and act on insights. You can improve long-standing relation-ships, or clear out old “stuff” that keeps you from attracting the best person for you!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) If you’re bored with meditation or spirituality, seek out new ap-proaches. Use a mantra; try walking meditations; study a for-eign religion or mythology; ex-plore qigong, yoga or tai chi. Find what excites and inspires you. Your new style will bring breakthroughs and creative solu-tions. Also, release grudges and past trust issues. On the 3rd di-mension, look at finances and clear out old debts.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Mercury will go direct mid-month, clearing up relationship confusion and misunderstand-ings. Write a gratitude list about your partner and meditate on it. Make another about how awe-some YOU are and meditate on that too! If single, creatively visu-alize the kind of person you want to attract. The Universe wants you to be happy and fulfilled in this area of life. Forgive yourself for human flaws and know you are loveable!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Electrical energy is coming into your relationships! Open your heart and mind to new possibili-ties. Meditate to release old ex-periences, disappointments, and expectations. What’s in front of you is more perfect than your cherished fantasies. And the Uni-verse can’t give you something new if you’re bogged down by the past stuff, be it bad or good! You could also have a breakthrough with health or diet/body image. Again, open your mind for new solutions.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Work is going to be busy, but ex-citing! You might get a raise or a new position. Co-workers can inspire you. On a spiritual level, you might start a new health re-gime that makes you feel power-ful and able to clear out negativi-ty on a mental or karmic level. Heart-to-heart talks with roman-tic partners or close friends pro-vide revelations and break-throughs. But don’t dwell on heavy issues – get the solution, implement it and move on!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Meditation provides insights into family issues. You’ll see how “old stuff” interferes with relation-ships. The freedom you achieve will make connections easy. If you have kids, you’ll see how you re-enact your parents’ negative stuff with them – eek! Now you can see the souls that they are,

and let them be free to grow. You can offer guidance without being judgmental. Also, be honest with yourself about spending habits. When you’re anxious, you can spend compulsively or randomly. Being spiritually grounded keeps you from blowing your budget!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) If you’re feeling emotionally “triggered” by people or situa-tions, meditate and ask to see the roots of your tension. There could be a family pattern being set off in your subconscious. There might even be a past life pattern you might uncover! Ei-ther way, the key to freedom is forgiveness – forgiveness toward yourself, and toward others in-volved. You’ll be lifted to a high place in your mind and see solu-tions from that perspective!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Like your Capricorn pals, you might be feeling edgy and irrita-ble. Meditate and see how you are procrastinating – or how you might not be living up to stand-ards you’ve set for yourself. Make a list of priorities, so certain ac-tivities definitely get accom-plished. Please put meditation or some form of spiritual connec-tion at the top! Soul connection turns this month’s energy into exciting bursts of intuition and creativity! Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels

March 2013

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) – Happy birthday Pisces! Mercury goes direct in your sign, giving clarity on un-resolved issues from the past birth year – especially about personal assertion. Remember, Pisces can be the guppy or the shark. Meditation provides the emo-tional poise to assert your needs clearly, in a timely manner. You can release being the people-pleaser who blows up periodically. It’s a relief to more con-sistently express the spiritual being that you truly are!
