It is hoped you are enjoying the new look Bowls News and items are easier for youto find.

This month I was amazed to see an article titled 2012 Twilight Fillies Triples whichwas sent in by the successful team from Lowlands (page 12), and another articlefrom Hurstville Diggers about their Patron Alice Selig who turned 100 years old atChristmas and still continues her interest in the club. Amazing! Read about this onpage 21.

The other story on page 21 came from Picton where the ladies raised money foran 8 year old boy, Seth, who is having a battle with lymphoblastic leukaemia and whowanted an electric scooter. The ladies helped raise enough money so the scootercould be purchased, and the story and photo are there for all to see. It is wonderfulto hear about clubs taking on these special projects and making people happy.

Remember the date for finalising the Championships and Competitions for 2011 isMay 1. Please help us by sending your results in as quickly as possible. Districts maystart to send in results when they are played and Pennant results as soon as it ispossible.

Please make sure the club’s name is on everything you send to us (but nothingwritten or printed on the front face of any photo). We are still printing In Memoriamnotices, it was only the very small In Remembrance we stopped.

Congratulations to Karen Murphy – World Indoor Champion, and Natasha VanEldik – Australian Female Bowler of the Year.

President’s Message

Prepare to be blown away withadrenaline fuelled hits and lighteningquick action as a new format of lawnbowls revolutionises the game.

Later this year the AustralianPremier League will be launched. An initiative expected to transform theway lawn bowls is played, viewed andperceived.

The evolution aims to broaden theappeal of the sport by developing commercial opportunities with TVbroadcasters and providing an alternative format of bowls, to drive anincrease in participation at clubs.

Individual clubs, state associations, regions and private organisations willbe given the opportunity to purchaselicenses for the competition with benefits that include naming rights,

shirt sponsorship, venue advertisingand television exposure.A sneak peak at the APL –

• Eight teams from 5 capital citieswill lock horns over 14 rounds.

• Teams will consist of 3 playersand a coach, with a pairs play format of two bowls per player, with two sets of five ends and aone end tie-break if required.

• Teams can call upon a Super Subplayer rotation to play one shot inany end, lending the game to anarray of tactical/strategic opportu-nities for specialty bowlers.

• A draw card for the competitionwill be the Power Play ends, which allows the coach of eachteam to dictate one end per setwhere their shots are doubled.

What is Marketing?Marketing is an integral part of manage-

ment for an organisation including NSWWBA. Without an adequate market yoursport may be successful for a period oftime, however will not continue to grow anddevelop. A sport may have the best product, service available, but if no onewants to become members or advocatethe service it will not grow and prosper.

What is Marketing at NSWWBA?At NSWWBA marketing concentrates on

identifying our target audience, competitionrecreational and sporting activities, what allstakeholders (including potential members, sponsors, volunteer administrators) needand what they want. Then we work outhow to engage these audiences throughdifferent communication channels.

In our case NSWWBA wish to grow the membership, events, resources and services on offer. We must ask, do NSWWBA currently have members advocatingto potential members to come down andtry a game of Bowls. If not, why not?Bowls, after all, is one of the 6 core sportsfor the Commonwealth Games and beingplayed by all levels of fitness: from juniorsas young as 7 to seniors as young as 101.This is a sport to talk about!

The exciting part at the moment is thestrategy development. Over the next fewmonths, stakeholders will be emailed a survey to fill in what they believe NSWWBAshould be doing in order to grow the sportand become more accessible to women ofall ages and fitness levels in NSW with thecurrent resources available.

There are many marketing concepts toincrease membership, raise funds andattract sponsors for your club. One suchmarketing concept is the Marketing Mix (orThe 5 P’s). The research on your targetmarket, what your club offers and where itis positioned within the market helps identify your club’s marketing mix.

1. Product – Having or producing aproduct or service required by others. Thiscould be your Club, Bowls, the competitions, social play or other activitieson offer from the Women’s Club or eventhe registered Club.

2. People – Members or the people

who use the services or products on offer.Includes your employees, volunteers andcurrent and potential members, e.g. canyou transition corporate women bowlers tobecome members and play competition.

3. Price – Pricing the product or service at both competitively and profitably. This includes membership fees and structure, discounts and the ‘cost’ of amember’s time. Making it affordable to yourtarget audience, having bowls they canuse, providing standard uniforms at

Chief Executive Officer’s Report Heather Welch

The Board of Directors is currently reviewing the strategic plan including developing amarketing plan. Over the last 12 months there has been discussion about sport notneeding these plans. So I thought we would look at the benefits of having a marketingplan, and the process to implement it.

Step 1:Research Once you have identified The 5 Ps then

you could look at strategies to target newmembers over the next 12 months. As you have identified the Product (Bowls),People (potential and current members –remembering that retaining current members is just as important as gainingnew members), Price (making it affordableto your target audience), and Promotion ofthe product to the target people who canbecome members to your Club and how.

Step 2: StrategyDiscuss the research as a team and

develop clear goals to work towards: agreeon target audiences and formulate thegoals for the plan. Involve Committee members, potential members, Clubemployees (if available.)

Whilst developing strategy ask questions:

• How does your club compare withother organisations?

• What makes your club different fromother clubs?

Step 3: ImplementationHave designated people to implement

Figure 1: The example of a process for development of the marketing plan.

the strategies to reach the goals, eg.Have 2 membership drives betweenJanuary and June in 2012 or have 2 OpenDays each year and letter drop surroundingsuburbs, or email all the Clubs members(with permission from the registered Club)to come and try a game of Bowls.

Step 4: ReviewOne of the most important steps to

review the process and see if the clubgained any new members, funding orreached its long and short term goals.

The BenefitIf this is placed into a 1-2 year plan then

you can start to implement a basic market-ing plan for your Club. The benefit to theclub will be a way to monitor what workswell and not so well and this can then beshared across the clubs. In future editionsof this magazine, we’d like to share somesuccess stories that we can all learn from. The common goal, of course, is to ensure arosy future for this dynamic and engagingsport.

If you have any questions or would likemore information, or already have successstories to share, please contact me.

discounted rates, etc.4. Promotion – Ensuring the

potential members are aware of your product. This can be advertising, publicity, sponsorship, brochures, posters, member-ship drives, using websites, social media, emails or personal selling.

5. Place – Where the Club is geographically. Includes where you train, compete (home and away) and other facilities on offer.

The side Manager/Captain havingmade the decision to commence orcontinue the game with a player/s shortin team/s, they then, if a player is able to join or rejoin the team cannot changetheir mind. There is no provision withinthe laws of the Sport of Bowls for aplayer to take her place in the team orto resume play once the game has been commenced using three players in a team. The decision to play with aplayer short cannot be overturned.

The procedure for keeping the score-card would be as follows:

It would be indicated on the cardwhere the game commenced playingwith a player short.

If, at the start, then this would beindicated on the card the player (theintended member of the team) whowould not be playing.

If during the game a player has toleave the green the player’s namewould be indicated on the card thatshe had retired.

A line would be marked across thecard under the last end that all four players played and the game wouldthen continue.

At the end of the game the Skipwould complete the card by recording the correct score and the

time the game was completed. Thescore would then be transferred tothe front of the card AFTERcalculating the corrected score.

Example: Taking into considerationthat at the completion of end no. 5when the player from Team A retired, the team had scored six (6) shotsand from end no. 6 to 21, theyscored another 13 shots (the numberof shots scored from the end whereusing three players commenced), andone-quarter of the 13 shots scored is3.25 shots to be deducted from theirfinal score. Their total shots would be 6 + 9.75shots = 15.75 shots. This total would then be transferredto the front of the card and the cardssigned by the Skips. When the decision had been made to play witha player short, the lead and the second would then play with 3 bowlseach from the same set.

Yes, It certainly has. As a player or asan official I have participated in everyState Carnival since 1986, and throughmy 8 years on the State Umpires Board I

travelled all over the State lecturing andexamining players. During this time I metmany wonderful people and it has been a constant thrill for me now that, over the last 3½ years as State Treasurer/Finance Director many of these sameladies come up to remind me of timespast.

What are you doing at Club level?I am a long time member of Taren

Point WBC, currently the Secretary and atthe last Annual General Meeting was honoured to be made a Life Member.Until this year I played Pennants andhope to do so again when I am not quiteso busy at Head Office.

What do you find very special aboutplaying bowls?

To my mind bowls is like no othersport for women. It engenders a cama-raderie among women and produces anenvironment that allows women to mixtogether on a level playing field. No matter what is happening in your life there

is always someone at the club who hasbeen there or someone who is a good listener. You are never alone.

What do you wish for the future of bowls? That bowls continues to move

forward into the 21st century and thatclubs encourage and foster new bowlersby showing them how much fun it can beat whatever level they wish to play.

My husband Colin and I have lived in“The Shire” for over 36 years and raisedthree children there. My training was as aSecretary, and during my working life Iworked in a bank and then in privateenterprise for a Company Director. Wehave six wonderful grandchildren, andbetween enjoying their company and theNSWWBA, life is very busy.

When did you start to play bowls?Engadine WBC in 1989.

What encouraged you to take up bowls? My son started bowls as a school

sport and took it up seriously and I wastalked into it by his coach, and was invited to give it a try to see how muchwas involved in the sport, and the rest asthey say is history.

Did you play other sports before bowls?Taught tennis players when very

young, and then adapted to squash as an adult and played competitively from1978-1990’s. Started squash when welived in Malaysia for one year, where my

husband worked for Malaysian Airlines.

What size bowls are you playing with, and do you still play pennants?

Size 3 Heavy, Red maroon speckleswith a cute “Dog in a Doghouse” logo. Imade the decision in the last year to takea break from playing to devote time to myState Match work. I am the sort of bowlerthat needs to play a couple of times aweek, and have regular roll ups to play toa standard I am happy with.

What do you enjoy about bowls? The opportunities to represent my Club,

District and NSW in competitive gamesand the chance to play with and againstsome of the “Stars”. Most cherished is thegame I played with Karen Murphy – she isa great ambassador.

Has your love of bowls led you intosome other interesting directions?

Opportunity to become InternationalTechnical Official (ITO) and officiate atNational and International Bowls events.

If you could go anywhere you like, where would it be and with whom?

I would choose to have dinner with

I live in the northern suburbs of Sydneyin Wahroonga and play bowls at PennantHills and consider myself to be amongstthose most fortunate to have a great family, comprising my supportive husbandStephen, two sons and a daughter, twoterrific daughters-in-law and four amazinggranddaughters.

When did you start to play bowls? An invitation (advertised Open Day) to

learn to bowl at a nearby club, meet a fewpeople and join everyone afterwards at thesausage sizzle was an offer too good torefuse! After an hour or so on the greenwe were hooked, we joined the club, hadlessons and in no time at all, both of uswere bowling two days each week. I thoroughly enjoyed the competitive element, however I also found the administrative side to bowls extremelyinteresting and became Secretary within afew weeks of joining the club. Over thenext few years I took on the role ofTreasurer, Director and Deputy Chairmanof the Registered Club, District Secretaryand District President.

Did you play other sports or enjoy otherrecreational interests?

Over the years I enjoyed social golf andtennis, but played Grade Squash inSydney and earlier in Tasmania. Eventuallyinjuries (and age) forced retirement and anew interest in trout fishing emergedinvolving travelling to NZ and the Victorianand NSW high country. We bought aproperty near Oberon and spent most ofour spare time enjoying country life, fishingthe river running through our farm andavoiding snakes.

What was your working background?Prior to retirement, I was employed by

the Commonwealth Government. Ienjoyed every minute working in three different areas – Business andAdministration, then as Executive Officer inResearch & Development and a NationalMarketing Co-ordinator. The positionsinvolved considerable travel, meeting withpoliticians and their staff and other depart-ments of the Government as well as various University Research faculties.

Do you have time for hobbies? When I can, I still love to paint,

mostly with oils, although using water-colours to paint flowers and other plants inintricate detail is very satisfying. Of course,I’m never without my knitting.

Can you name three things you wish

John Farnham. I’ve had a crush on himsince “Sadie days” – I’m embarrassed tosay I’m still not over it. I have “You’re theVoice” as my mobile ringtone.

What do you wish for the future of bowls? For as many people as possible to be

able to enjoy the game at whatever levelthey wish, and to see the volunteers who give so much time at Club, Districtand State level, be appreciated and recognised for their efforts.

you had done?Yes, I wish I had learnt to fly a plane,

ridden a horse in a show jumping eventand driven one of those monstrous interstate trucks!!!

What do you wish for the future of bowls? To have the administration of the

game meet the needs of all bowlers, to continually aim to increase the numbers ofplayers at all levels, particularly school children and working women and toensure the first class organisation andcontinuation of championships and eventsat the highest level possible.

Karen Murphy recently flewhome to Australia with her firstWorld Indoor Trophy having

won the Fred Olsen Cruise LinesLadies World Matchplay Title atPotters Leisure Resort.

Karen admitted she had as good asstolen the trophy from England’s DebbieStavrou who had seemed destined towin the prestigious title for a record thirdtime.

Karen had struggled to cope with theconsistency of Debbie who was appearing in her fourth final in five years, but when the big bowls were required, the Australian star was not found wanting as she underlined her status asone of the worlds’s top bowlers.

Debbie Stavrou was bidding tobecome only the second player to complete the ladies singles and mixedpairs double and cruised to a 10-4 firstset win and looked to have the win inher hand as she eased into a 6-4 lead inthe second.

It was then that Karen Murphy suddenly clicked into gear to put

pressure on Debbie for the first time inthe match and the grip the English girlhad on proceedings began to look lesssecure.

Karen trailed the jack for two shotswhen 6-2 down, added a single on thenext, and then produced a superbdrawing bowl under pressure to nudgethe jack the required few inches to claima double, and a 7-6 win and forced thematch into a tie-break.

The little “Aussie” suddenly had aspring in her step and she maintainedthe momentum by playing two immaculate tie-break ends to snatchvictory from the jaws of defeat.

Karen said, “I felt I played a little better than I did in the semi-final, but Ihad to, because Debbie is a class playerand she was certainly more consistentthan me on the day.”

Clearly disappointed at not achievingthe record, Debbie said, “I felt confidentgoing into the final but I played toomany loose bowls in the second set,and lost my weight, which you cannotafford to do against such a class player

Karen has been a great ambassador for the sport, not only isshe a decorated NSW women’sbowler, but she is helping to promotethe game through The Karen MurphyCoaching Clinics providing coachingsessions for groups or single bowlersof all abilities, which will identify wherebowlers can improve to become betterplayers.

In a blockbuster finish, the reigning title-holders clinched victory by 1 shot – Karen’stoucher finished millimeters too long.

“It’s definitely a pretty special feeling to go back to back,” a proud Lynsey said after her victory.

“Being the first team to do so is a pretty big honour and the girls played really well.

“We’ve got a great bond and a greatfriendship so I think that helped us getover the line in this tough tie-break.

“We knew we were in for a tough timeagainst Kaz, Julie and Kay, they’re a classoutfit.

“We just plugged away but they gotaway from us a little bit in the second set, just a couple of shots that Kaz convertedand I wasn’t able to get back for the girls.

“In the tie-break we knew it was any-one’s game and we had to start again butKelso got us off to a great start.”

With $125,000 in prize money and atitle worthy of a champion, the tournamentfeatured singles, pairs and triples for bothmen and women, as well as a festival ofbowls which incorporated specific agegroups and bowlers with a disability.

The star studded list of locals and inter-nationals lined up for their chance to claimthe blue ribbon singles title.

Defending Triples champions KelseyCottrell, Anne Johns and Lynsey Armitagemade history on the greens etching theirnames into the record books as the firstteam to defend their title since the event’sinception.

With one of the nation’s most covetedprizes up for grabs, the pressure was onfrom the start, as the all-star outfit werematched by an equally impressive NSWopposition in Commonwealth Game silvermedallists Kay Moran, Julie Keegan andworld no. 4 Karen Murphy.

Australian captain Lynsey Armitage’scontingent looked dangerous early, as theytook control of the match with a 7-5 opening set before Karen Murphy’s trioresponded with a 10-6 second set to pushthe game into the tie-break.

The quality of the contenders was evident as both teams tussled to hit thelead.

for the pairs and triples discipline at theAustralian Open, Lynsey Armitage claimedthe rare treble by winning the elusiveSingles crown.

The 28-year old barely stepped out offirst gear in the opening set against 18year old Lisa, collecting 5 easy shots overthe first three ends on way to a 9-6 set.

While Lynsey was peaking on the second set, Lisa began to falter, finding itdifficult to achieve consistency and struggling to stay in touch with herAustralian skipper. Four shots in the finalfour ends saw the Helensvale star’s sensational form bring home a 9-2 victory.

“It was unexpected being in the singlesas I’m not really recognised as a singlesplayer. I thought I'd give myself one last goin the last chance qualifying down hereand managed to scrape through.

“I think it did help as I took the attitudeto just go with the flow and see what happened with no expectations as I wasn’t expecting to even make the firstround,” she said.

Overjoyed by her win, Lynsey was lostfor words when asked how she wouldhandle expectations now that she hasmade her mark in the discipline.

“I really focused and wanted to do wellin my singles,” she said.

Have you always been good at bowls?I would class myself as an average

bowler ... I have good days and bad.

Have you had some successes withyour bowls and what were they?

Not particularly with my bowls, however I was fortunate to be the A&BGroup Representative for 3 years and Imet some incredible people. In particularthe ladies from Tamworth-Inverell-Armidalearea. These ladies travel huge distancesto play pennants and are alway so cheerful about everything. I am now theRegional Rep for Region One and I amlooking forward to working with theseladies in the coming year.

What is so special about playingbowls?

Apart from the healthy aspect of playing the friendships are really important. There always seems to besomeone to cheer you up if you are downin the dumps and in trying times the support is great.

What information would you give tobowlers to help them along.

I have heard so many times of newladies turning up to play and someonehas been nasty to them, so they nevercome back. These people are few and farbetween these days, so please ignore theodd few and enjoy the game.

I live at Scotts Head with my husbandTony and 2 very spoilt labradors.

How long have you been bowlingJudy?

I retired 11 years ago and took upbowling a year later.

Please tell us how you came to be interested in bowling and what keepsyou going on playing?

I always played golf and when I retiredto Scotts Head I would have had to travelinto Mackville to play golf, so I thought Iwould give bowls a go instead as it was agood way to meet the people of ScottsHead and I haven’t been back to golf yet.

You live up towards Coffs Harbour, what is your bowling club?

I joined Scotts Head and played thereuntil late last year when I transferred toMacksville.

What size and colour are your bowls?I play with Taylor Redline, Size 3

turquoise in colour with a gumnut insignia.

Tell us a bit of you history with bowls. Is this the only club you have belongedto and a brief summary of the highpoints at this club or others to whichyou have belonged.

As I said I joined Scotts Head and hadmoderate success there as a player, managing over the time to win the fours, triples and pairs. However never that elusive singles. As happens a lot I wasonly a member for a few months when Ibecame Secretary. I have also beenDistrict Secretary and Vice President.

How many days a week do you bowl?I usually only bowl on ladies days and

special days as Tony is not a bowler andwe have other interests.

Will you be playing pennants in 2012and would you like to share some ofyour history of playing in pennantteams?

I have been selected to play forMacksville in the grade 4 pennants. I haveplayed for Scotts Head in the 2’s and 3’s.I have never won a pennant althoughhave been close. I enjoy pennants and thecompetition it offers.Have you had any challenges in yourbowling career?

The only real challenge is to play better.

This month’s bowler is Regional Representative for Region 1

Judy Padgen

Have you had any funny or interestingexperiences you would like to sharewith us?

I was in the position of A&B Group Repfor about a year when I went to a functionwhere there were a lot of clubs attending. This one lady came up to me and asked ifI could make scones. Now, I thought tomyself what a strange question to ask. SoI told her I could make lemonade sconesbut asked why she wanted to know. Thereply was “We thought you looked likeyou could make good scones,” so wevoted for you when your picture was inthe magazine. Not a good criteria for voting someone into a position, howeverthanks ladies.

If you could go anywhere on a dreamholiday, where would you go and whowould you take to share it with you?

Tony and I would go to Canada andthen to Gallipoli.

Hobbies?I like to read and belong to the local

book club. I like to make quilts and knit. Iam a bit of an addict with computergames. I also volunteer at the local hospital coffee shop once a fortnight. I love to spend time with our two grand-children as well.

What is it like living in Scotts Head andif you could change your life whatwould you do and where would youlive?

Scotts Head is a small village on theMid North Coast with a population ofaround 1,000 but usually only a few hundred unless it is holiday time. We havebeautiful beaches, rivers with good fishingand a very relaxed lifestyle. Why would Iwant to live anywhere else?

ADDING FLAVOURwithout loading up on salt

Open any cookbook and if thewords ‘season to taste’, or salt

don’t appear in the recipe, saltyingredients like soy sauce, bacon orstock, will – and sometimes there’llbe both.

“Once you develop a taste for salty foods,it can be hard to cut back. Our taste budseasily become accustomed to salt, so thatinitially, food can seem to lose flavour,” saidTony Thirlwell, Heart Foundation NSW, CEO.

“The trouble with salty foods and salt –including table salt, sea salt, rock salt and saltflakes – is that they can lead to high bloodpressure,” Mr Thirlwell said .

According to the Heart Foundation, highblood pressure is a leading risk factor forheart disease and stroke. And recent HeartFoundation research has found more than 2 million Australians report they have thecondition.

“It helps to gradually reduce salt so thatyou’re less likely to notice any difference intaste,” Mr Thirlwell said.

Here are the Heart Foundation’s top tips foradding salt free flavour to your meals:

1. Add flavour to meat before cooking withherbs and spices like garlic, pepper, chilli, ginger or your favourite herbs.

2. Balsamic, red wine and white wine vinegars are also delicious additions tomarinades that really boost flavours.

3. A squeeze of lemon juice adds flavourand helps us better absorb the iron fromred meat and green vegetables.

4. Sprinkle herbs – fresh or dried – overveggies during or after cooking.

5. A splash of wine is a flavourful additionto meat marinades. The alcohol largelyburns off during cooking.

If your favourite recipe really won’t workwithout salty ingredients here are our favourite

salt reduction tips:1. If the recipe calls for olives or

anchovies, rinse them in fresh waterbefore use and use less than the recipesuggests.

2. Try to use less of the salty sauces likesoy, tomato, fish and oyster sauces thanthe recipe suggests and try reduced saltversions when available.

3. Choose ingredients that have earned theHeart Foundation Tick or look for saltreduced ingredients where appropriatesuch as canned tomatoes, tomatopaste, bacon, ham and stocks.

Forestville RSL FlyingBowlers off again

Forestville RSL Flying Bowlers on the steps of Old Parliament House.

Elaine Taylor – Sportsperson of the Year 2011(Port Macquarie).

Forestville RSL Flying Bowlers is an entirely social mixedbowls section of the Forestville RSL. The section originatedin 1977 when the first small group of members flew by

chartered plane to various clubs for their social visits. Since then,to earn their “Wings”, some members fly to the destination where we are having our annual four day visit.

In October, 2011, 40 of us boarded acoach to Queanbeyan and Canberrawith 4 members flying down. On arrivalwe had a guided tour of GovernmentHouse. On Saturday we were off toQueanbeyan RSL Memorial Club for amorning of friendly bowls and then an afternoon cruise of Lake Burley Griffin. Astop at Old Parliament House followedfor an official photo and presentation of“wings” to the flyers.

Sunday dawned another clear dayand we were welcomed by Yowani Travelling Bowlers for a fun morning ofbowls and lunch. Afterwards we pro-ceeded to the Australian Institute ofSport for a very interesting guided tour.

On the way home we stopped atBungendore and Goulburn where a tourguide expertly explained the different historical sites of the city.

The welcome given to the group bythe Queanbeyan and Canberra bowlingclubs was really appreciated, especially

the club members whose efforts madethe visits so special. The group look forward to reciprocating if any of theseor other clubs are able to visit Forestvilleand new members are always welcomewhether local or from far and wide.

Thirroul wins Illawarra DistrictMinor Singles Final

After moving to Thirroul two years ago, Kerry Vickery joined the ThirroulWBC about April, 2010 and started bowling regularly on Thursdays.

Working and baby sitting commitments limited her time on the green but living so close to the bowling club allowed her to have roll ups and lessonswith Matt Seargent.

Playing in the District Minor Singles this year has been a great learning experi-ence and to win the final against Sandra Bushy of Warilla BC was very exciting,Kerry stated that even though she won this tournament, she knows she has a lotto learn about this game!

Thirroul ladies are very proud to have a champion amongst them and wishKerry every success in the future. Thirroul has not won a District Final since 1984.
