Read on for tips on how to refresh your website to maximize its effectiveness. How can you update your web presence? 1. Consider converting your "old-fashioned" static website to a dynamic CMS-driven website. Retail sites should consider switching to a dynamic shopping cart, such as Zen Cart or OScommerce. Marketing websites should consider switching to a dynamic blog or portal software, such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal. Use of a CMS (content management system) allows you to take ownership of your website's information and quickly make changes. Also, there are a number of free and inexpensive commercial templates for each CMS that can make your small business look very professional. 2. Consider updating your website's look. We all know how costly creating a state-of-the art website can be, but affordable alternatives exist. Arkansas is awash with talented youth. Many a small business has benefitted from talking with a high school guidance counselor or the youth minister at a local place of worship to identify a part-time "webmaster." Or, by using a CMS and a free template, you can quickly and inexpensively update your website's look. 3. Review webpages for outdated references. Take a moment and read each page on your website. Look for long-past dates, old telephone numbers, incorrect prices or discontinued products or services. 4. Check for broken links. Click each and every link on your website and verify that all are in working order. Pay close attention to links to third parties. Often, domain names expire and are bought by less-than- scrupulous businesses. You may unwittingly be referring your customers to adult sites or exposing them to malware-infected sites. Inspections of websites with many links can be automated by using link-checking tools like Xenu. 5. Tweak your pages for optimum search engine placement. Review the keywords, page text, meta tags and titles for each page and ensure they are still optimized for high-traffic search phrases. 5 Tips for Updating Your Web Presenceby Timothy Lee, Associate Extension Specialist, UALR Lead Center
We all know that in this day and age having a functional and well-designed web page is a must have for your business. Read on for tips on how to refresh your website to maximize its eectiveness.
We all know how costly creating a state-of-the art website can be, but aordable alternatives exist. Arkansas is awash with talented youth. Many a small business has benetted from talking with a high school guidance counselor or the youth minister at a local place of worship to identify a part-time "webmaster." Or, by using a CMS and a free template, you can quickly and inexpensively update your website's look.
3. Review webpages for outdated references. Take a moment and read each page on your website. Look for long-past dates, old telephone numbers, incorrect prices or discontinued products or services.
4. Check for broken links. Click each and every link on your website and verify that all are in working order. Pay close attention to links to third parties. Often, domain names expire and are bought by less-than-scrupulous businesses. You may unwittingly be referring your customers to adult sites or exposing them to malware-infected sites. Inspections of websites with many links can be automated by using link-checking tools like Xenu.
5. Tweak your pages for optimum search engine placement. Review the keywords, page text, meta tags and titles for each page and ensure they are still optimized for high-trac search phrases.
