From the Churchwardens
What dreadful scenes we witnessed from Haiti in January but in
the midst of all the chaos there has been hope when a girl was pulled
from the wreckage almost 2 weeks after the disaster. What can we
do to help? Most of us have privately donated money to help to pro-
vide the immediate essentials. World Vision appealed to the Church
for money to buy a shelter for a family. We were able to provide
funds for a shelter due to the generous donations from the congre-
gation. Thank you to all who contributed. We do not know how those
people felt or how they are feeling or coping now or how they will
manage in the future. Remember them in your prayers. Although
Haiti has dropped from the news help will be needed there for a long
time to come.
It is lovely to see the church lit up at night time. Many people have
remarked how pleased they are now the lights have returned and the
support has been excellent. Thank you to the Buffs for their gift
and
to Alan Mitchell who given his time and materials in installing the
lights.
Just moving slightly into April, we have Father Peter to take services
on Maundy Thursday 1st April at 7.30pm to celebrate the last supper
which was really the first Holy Eucharist. It was also the night that
Jesus washed his disciples feet but was later betrayed by Judas in
the Garden of Gethsemane.
The word ‘Maundy’ comes from mandate – the mandate, the command
given by Jesus at the last supper to love one another.
Good Friday, 2nd April, services will be at 11.00 am Stations of the
Cross around the Church and 2.00 pm when we are reminded of Je-
sus’ suffering . We look forward to you joining in with these impor-
tant services. Once again we are grateful to Father Peter for looking
after us. Jane & NeilJane & NeilJane & NeilJane & Neil

What a Connection!!
As you all are aware we are very lucky to have our church floodlight for a few hours in the evenings. We are grateful to the BUFFS for their help in this matter. We must also say a huge thank you to A Mitchell Electricals, Ltd. They have family connections with Finedon which go back a long way and were more than happy to donate their time, materials and expertise which was needed to install the lights. The men worked through the snow and freezing conditions to get the lights on as soon as they could. A big thanks you to all concerned

Church Floodlighting
We have had a wonderful reaction to the church floodlights being on again at night, and we have to thank the Buffs for instigating this. Initially we planned only to illuminate the building at weekends but the comments have been so positive that, for the time being, the lights are on every evening, and will continue to be so whilst the sponsorship funds permit. May I thank everybody who has already kindly offered to sponsor the
lighting for a week, either to celebrate a special occasion or in memory of a loved one. There are many dates still available throughout the year so if you would like to help us to maintain the illumination of our beautiful church building please either contact me directly or contact Jane or Neil or complete an application form (copies of which are available at the back of the church). The cost will be £10 per week of dedication, with all money raised going towards the running costs of the floodlighting. If desired, you may specifically request ano-nymity. We have no mechanism for turning away support – so if your week is already “booked” it does not matter, two sponsors in one week will make up for other weeks when nobody comes forward!

Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday, not Mothers Day, al-ways falls in the middle of Lent. It really refers to the Mother Church. It is known that about 4 centuries ago people started visiting their Mother Church where they were baptised on Mothering Sunday. Maids and servants were allowed the day off to visit their families and Mother Church on this Sunday. They would say “they had gone a Mothering”. It was also a tradition to bake a Simnel Cake on
Mothering Sunday for Easter day and often
daughters in service would take a Simnel Cake home on this day.

Boobs and Brass
Wow! What can I say. £2,000 raised from the Boobs and Brass Concert. This money will be split between the Church and the Breast Cancer Campaign. An enormous thank you to all concerned. Those who worked hard to make it successful, those who came and supported and those who helped clear up afterwards. I make one exception in naming a ‘thank you to someone’ and that is Janice Pinnock. I could not keep up with her. I called her ‘God’s Little worker’.. She sold tickets galore, put posters all over the county, provided the tea for the band out of her own pocket, washed up and did much much more towards the evening Thank you in once again Janice. The ladies that play in the band come from all over the country. They ask to join the band to help raise money for breast Can-cer research. Most of them are very accomplished musicians, some are young beginners, but they all play in their local bands. The ladies complimented us on our hospitality, they do not usu-ally get tea provided and said it was wonderful to play to a full Church. Come again next year please if you can fit us in.

Tombola
Following the wonderful success of the Boobs and Brass concert in church on the 13th Feb-ruary, we would like to thank every one of you who supported our fundraising tombola in any way. We are most grateful to everybody who donated prizes and also to those of you who “tried your luck” on the night to help boost the
funds raised in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign and our church. Thank you all for your generous support.

Christian Aid
Thanks to the generous donations made towards refreshments following the Holy Eucharist service each Sunday morning, we have been able to send a donation of £408.93 to Christian Aid. Thank you to all who have contributed to this amount, and to the faithful team of ladies who serve us with coffee and - if we’re lucky - biscuits and cakes! Getting together after the service gives us a chance to catch up with friends and it’s also an excellent opportunity to welcome newcomers into the church community. Let’s keep up this good work!

Girl Guiding
Girl Guiding is celebrating its 100 years this year and to mark the celebration we are holding an exhibition in the Friends Meeting House between August and October of this year. We are asking if there are any old rainbows, brownies, guides, rangers, or guiders who have any old uniforms, badges, old sashes, photographs or memo-rabilia that we could possibly borrow to help make this event wonderful. If so please contact Mandy West on 07775674500.

In My DayIn My DayIn My DayIn My Day the ramblings of Hubert James In my day it was about this time of year that pubs began to change. And one of the most exciting changes began here in Finedon. Now up until then pubs had been solely places where you could get a drink. And when I say drink, it was mainly bitter, porter or mild. Lager hadn’t taken off. If you wanted something that colour you had to drink ci-der. Anyway, it was all drink no food. That all changed when a Mr and Mrs Doyle took over the Mulso. They came to the town from Edinburgh. Now Mrs Doyle was an excellent cook. Her husband couldn’t get enough of her Nips and Tatties, what-ever that was. Anyway, Mrs Doyle came up with the idea of offering meals in the pub. Now this was about the time that relations with China were at an all time low, and so there was a national plate shortage. The government of the day tried to persuade them to send us a few dishes at least but all they wanted to export were panda’s. So the Doyles, short of plates needed an alternative way of serving their meals. In Scotland Mr Doyle had been a part-time coracle weaver. And so he was the one who came up with the idea of serving them in baskets. We all found this very strange. And the meals took quite awhile to catch on. All the time Doyle was weaving away, and the lawn at the back of the Mulso was covered with little baskets. In the kitchen Mrs Doyle was oblivious to the lack of sales and fried up piles of scampi, chicken and chips. Desperate, the Doyles introduced taster sessions, and buy one get one free offers. And gradually using all their marketing skills, they got folk to eat out of baskets. Word travelled fast about food in pubs. Folk from all over wrote to the Doyles
asking how they did it. In the end Doyle wrote a book about how they sold
piles of food in baskets. It became a best seller. You’ll have heard of it: The Mounds of the Basket-meals.
