When the time comes to think about replacing heating or electrical equipment for a cottage or a principal residence, many environmentally friendly options are now available. For consumers who would like to be more energy efficient, many sources of energy are derived from renewable resources.

For a source of energy to be qualified as renewable, it must be able to regenerate or be renewed naturally over a period of 20 to 50 years. Some of these resources include solar, geothermal, bioenergetics, wind, marine current, and tidal energy. Not only are these energy sources renewable, they are largely pollution free. They also have small carbon footprints, meaning that they don’t contribute to the greenhouse effect by adding carbon dioxide to the atomosphere.

The profitability of these new energies is closely linked to the price of a barrel of crude oil: the higher the price of the barrel, the more profitable the new energies, and the more mainstream they will become. The exploitation of renewable resources will help in job creation and minimize our impact on the environment, even if initially it involves higher costs for consumers. As oil prices climb higher, however, these higher costs will become relative and a concerted effort to switch to renewable sources of energy will be economically justifiable.

The choices we consumers make today will guide government priorities and policies. It is our responsibility to think about such things carefully, as we stand at the dawn of an energy revolution.

Renewable energy: the solution


Choosing energy-efficient appliances can be a great way to conserve energy resources. Even though they may be more expensive at the time of purchase, they will work out to be less costly in the long run because of their lower energy consumption.

For dishwashingNever leave the tap running when washing dishes by hand. Use a basin of water in the sink instead. A dishwasher cycle is five times more economical than washing dishes by hand, but be careful to only start the dishwasher when it’s completely full. Use the “econ-omy” cycle of the dishwasher; longer cycles consume about 40 per-cent more energy as well as more water.

For the FridgePosition the fridge away from any sources of heat. Dust the venti-lation grill behind the fridge once a year and defrost the freezer regularly. Five centimetres of frost doubles electricity consumption!

For cookingWhen boiling water, always cover the pot. If you have an induction cooktop, use pots and pans designed for this purpose, which have a slightly larger diameter than the burner. Induction cooktops are more expensive at the time of purchase but are more economical to use.

For laundryUse cold water or water between 30 and 40 °C when doing laundry. This is just as efficient as hot water and uses half the amount of energy. Don’t forget to adjust the washer’s program to the economical cycle or a half-load when it isn’t full.

For washingHave a shower rather than a bath. You will use five times less water. Regulate the temperature of your water heater to between 55 and 60 °C. Any temperature higher than this will use too much energy, and can result in scalding too.

Composting is for everyone Composting is an eco-friendly activity within everyone’s reach, whether you live in a downtown apartment, a pretty country house, or even if you own a business. All you have to do is to adapt it to your lifestyle.

Composting consists of recuperating organic waste, which eventually turns into a dark brown soil matter that enriches gardens. Best of all, it reduces pollution and the amount of garbage going to waste management sites. The composting process takes between three months and three years, depending on the chosen method.

A Canadian household can reduce its yearly garbage production by up to 40 percent simply by composting. All it takes is a small investment for the purchase of a domestic composter as well as a container for kitchen waste. After that, all you need is your kitchen waste and lawn cuttings!

One of the most persistent myths about composting is that it smells bad. True enough, mixing kitchen waste, leaves, and maybe even a few worms in the same container doesn’t seem very appealing. However, it is really just a matter of chemistry. Compost will not smell if the different elements of a good composting recipe are respected.

If you’d like to start composting, your first step should be to learn all about the procedures to follow. And even though this natural fertilizer can be made throughout the year, don’t forget that spring is the best time to start.
