Acve Teaching for Acve Learners Our current College Strategic Plan acknowledges the journey from an environment of ‘Acve Learning #inCollaboraon’, to focus on ‘Acve Teaching for Acve Learners’. We now acknowledge that our students are much more social in the way they learn. They acvely seek to collaborate with one another, both within the school context and beyond. Acve learning is now pursued in a collaborave seng. Our challenge, as educators at Marcellin College, is to cater for this social learning style in an enthusiasc, dynamic and innovave fashion; we need to be acve teachers for acve learners. The College connues to be commied to the professional development of all teaching staff. This year, guided by our Strategic Plan, and in consultaon with College middle leaders, we established a definion of the ‘expert teacher’. This model will provide the basis for establishing further goals and aspiring to an ‘Acve Teaching for Acve Learners’ model. One phrase from the definion that sums up beaufully the ‘expert teacher’ and ‘acve teaching’ is that the ‘expert teacher’ seeks to be “visibly present to students in the classroom, moving around, seeking relaonship and nocing learning behaviours”. Over the coming weeks our teaching staff will review their goals from 2017 and set their minds to seng new goals and benchmarks for 2018. New focal points will be set and plans will be formalised such that we’ll be ready to deliver another year of quality teaching and learning from Day One in 2018. Needless to say, meculous planning is key to the success of any strategy and planning for 2018 has been underway at Marcellin College since early this year. Preparaon for the 2018 curriculum began formally in June with the Year Eight and Year Ten Subject selecon talks and an Informaon Evening. Subject lines are determined, courses are allocated to students and teachers are allocated to classes. We ‘metabled’ 382 classes across 11 Key Learning Areas (KLA), represenng 2,185 lessons over a 2 week cycle, delivered by 68 amazingly dedicated teachers, assisted by 13 support staff. A mammoth task which was the culminaon of months of planning. Class Placement An important part of our review and planning for 2018 has been our extensive review of the Class Placement structure for our Year 7-10 groups. Aſter a series of meengs involving the College Execuve, representaves from our Wellbeing, Diverse Learning, and KLA teams, as well as our Sydney Catholic Schools Leader of Learning, a revised Homeroom structure will be implemented from 2018. One of the three key features of the review was a renewed commitment to our Newman Stream program. We intend to introduce a ‘Newman 2’ label to our /2 classes to acknowledge the enrichment included to meet the learning needs of these students. The second key feature will be the connuaon of our work with those students of highest learning needs in the Learning Support /3 class. The third feature refers to our /4, /5 & /6 classes in Years 9 and 10, which will be general classes of mixed ability where the range of learning needs will be constant across the three classes. Student movement between classes from year to year will ensure this range of differenaon is as equal as possible. Details of the new Class Placement structure will be forwarded to parents prior to next week’s Parent Feedback Day on Tuesday, 12 December. From The Director Of Teaching amp M-Learning

I have recently returned from a week in Melbourne working on our timetable for 2018 with Mr Anthony Burke our Curriculum Manager and Victorian company Timetabling Solutions Needless to say meticulous planning is key to the success of any strategy and planning for 2018 has been underway at Marcellin College since early this year

Preparation for the 2018 curriculum began formally in June with the Year Eight and Year Ten Subject selection talks and an Information Evening Subject lines are determined courses are allocated to students and teachers are allocated to classes

We lsquotimetabledrsquo 382 classes across 11 Key Learning Areas (KLA) representing 2185 lessons over a 2 week cycle delivered by 68 amazingly dedicated teachers assisted by 13 support staff A mammoth task which was the culmination of months of planning

Class PlacementAn important part of our review and planning for 2018 has been our extensive review of the Class Placement structure for our Year 7-10 groups

After a series of meetings involving the College Executive representatives from our Wellbeing Diverse Learning and KLA teams as well as our Sydney Catholic Schools Leader of Learning a revised Homeroom structure will be implemented from 2018

One of the three key features of the review was a renewed commitment to our Newman Stream program We intend to introduce a lsquoNewman 2rsquo label to our 2 classes to acknowledge the enrichment included to meet the learning needs of these students

The second key feature will be the continuation of our work with those students of highest learning needs in the Learning Support 3 class

The third feature refers to our 4 5 amp 6 classes in Years 9 and 10 which will be general classes of mixed ability where the range of learning needs will be constant across the three classes Student movement between classes from year to year will ensure this range of differentiation is as equal as possible

Details of the new Class Placement structure will be forwarded to parents prior to next weekrsquos Parent Feedback Day on Tuesday 12 December

Year 10 Reflection Day

Guest Presenter - Mr Chris DoyleYear 10 were privileged to watch the amazing Chris Doyle in action on Tuesday 28 November Chris mixed humour life lessons and music into an informative experience He pushed boys out of their comfort zones by getting some to walk the catwalk and others to sing and dance in front of the entire year group all while teaching us some of the most important life lessons through witty and interesting analogies

Above Jesse Pollock (left) Reni Maitua and Ben Higgs sharing life experiences with Year 10

The Rise Foundation talks to Year 10

On Tuesday 21 November The RISE Foundationrsquos founder Ben Higgs along with fellow MCR Old Boys Reni Maitua and Jesse Pollock visited the College to speak with the Year 10 cohort on coping with mental illness and how to support others suffering with depression

All three guest speakers shared their own personal stories of the struggles they have faced in their lives and how they coped with finding their feet after falling The message to the Year 10 students focused on the strength in picking oneself up and then moving forward That depression and mental health issues do not discriminate - whether you are an elite sportsperson or a high school student everyone can experience depression and feel overwhelmed by the pressures of life That reaching out for help is a good thing and not a sign of weakness

We learnt that life doesnrsquot have to be about the negatives but more so about the positives and the experiences they bring with them Thank you Chris for teaching us to embrace and tolerate everyone as they are and to have a laugh with them to create long-lasting deep and meaningful relationships with those around us and to value lifersquos beauty

Hugh Doosey - Year 10

As Ben said ldquoIn life everyone makes mistakes Itrsquos part of life and it happens to everyone The difference is what you make of it what you learn and what you do after This is the part that will define us There is no shame in needing a hand when we are down There is no shame in asking for a hand Accepting that you need help and asking for it is the brave part Giving someone a hand is just as braverdquo

The College would like to thank Ben Reni and Jesse from The Rise Foundation for taking the time to come and talk with the boys More information can be found on their website wwwtherisefoundationnet

AFL 9rsquos Classic

On Friday 24 November Marcellin College entered two Under 15s teams in the AFL 9s Schools Classic at Queens Park AFL 9s is a 9-a-side non-contact version of Australian Rules Football and the competition was entered by a variety of public private and Catholic schools from across New South Wales

The Marcellin College Blue team could have been considered as a development squad and unfortunately lost all three of their games exiting the competition at the group stage Despite defeat the boys in the team enjoyed their day of Aussie Rules

The more experienced Marcellin College White team fared much better beating Thomas Hassall Anglican College 51 (31) to 31 (19) and Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts 52 (32) to 00 (0) Unfortunately a 22 (14) to 62 (38) defeat to eventual champions Keira High School meant the boys missed out on a place in semi-finals by percentage

Thanks to all the boys who participated and to Mr Roemling and Mr OShea for their help on the day Congratulations to Player of the Day Hamish Morrison and top scorer Lucas Walker

As Ben said ldquoIn life everyone makes mistakes Itrsquos part of life and it happens to everyone The difference is what you make of it what you learn and what you do after This is the part that will define us There is no shame in needing a hand when we are down There is no shame in asking for a hand Accepting that you need help and asking for it is the brave part Giving someone a hand is just as braverdquo

watching diverse plays at Sydney Theatre Company and The Seymour Centre for inspiration before choosing to adapt Shakespearersquos lsquoThe Taming of The Shrewrsquo This writing process itself involved journaling ideas and working closely with Mr Rice and myself on the script and then transforming the ideas to the stage in the rehearsal space to test out what meshed well Other talented students such as fellow Year 9 student Carl La Hood assisted with logging video diaries and editing a promotional video to assist with getting the production process showcased and effectively promoted

The cast and crew were involved in a rigorous series of workshops and auditions leading into the rehearsal process Students were trained on how to design the lighting system and Edward Ambrogio (Year 9) was a mastermind behind the scenes in this process and should be acknowledged for his outstanding efforts Noah Jugow (Year 9) designed the stylish and detailed program booklet while other students helped source costumes props and trained in how to use the sound system and control transitions Everyone worked together as one strong entity

This production was also a collaboration with the Music department and I wish to acknowledge Class of 2017 graduate Paul Escorrido for returning to school after finishing Year 12 to feature as a vocal soloist in the production Other expert teachers such as Ms Caitrina Moran assisted in directing and was such a wonderful support for the boys
