A MARC is a MAchine Readable Cataloguing.
It means that a computer can read and interpret the
data of a cataloguing record.
It is a standard used for the exchange of
bibliographic information among computerised
library systems.
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of MARC is to provide a standard
format for the global exchange of bibliographic
information available in Machine Readable
Format in the libraries Worldwide.
Library of Congress, Washington DC was the
first to produced Marc records in October 1966.
PURPOSE
MARC21 is a new name of the harmonized
CANMARC and USMARC formats. The National
Library of Canada and Library of Congress work
together to formulate a common harmonized format
and reconcile the format differences.
MARC21 is bibliographic standard for 21st century.
All MARC Formats are not the same and majority
have ceased.
A FIELD : Each bibliography record is divided
logically into fields. There is a field for author,
a field for title, and so on. These fields are
subdivided into one or more “subfields”. They
are represented by 3-digit tags.
Its Terms and Definitions
A TAG: Each field is associated with 3-digit
number called a “tag”. A tag identifies a field..
The kind of data.. That follows. The tag is
always the first 3-digit. Here the number 100
is the tag.
100 1# $a Amenla AO
INDICATORS: Two character position follows each tag ( with the exception of field 001 through 009). One or both of these character position may be used for indicators. When an indicator position is not used, the indicator is referred to as “undefined” and the position is left blank. It is the convention to represent a blank, or undefined, indicator position by the character “#”.

PARTS OF A MARC RECORD
There are five communication formats

MARC21 COMMUNICATION FORMAT:
The first 24 positions are the leader. In this example the leader fills approximately 1/3 of the first line and ends with "4500." Immediately following the leader, the directory begins. Tags are highlighted in green for better understanding. Each individual tag directory is 12 characters long. The first tag is 001. Following each tag, the next four positions show the length of the field. The data in the 001 field (control number) in this record is 20 characters long. The next 5 positions tell the starting point for this field within the data string that follows the directory. The 001 field begins at the 00000 position (the first position is position 0). The next tag is 003, which is 4 characters long and begins at the 20th position (the length of the previous position -- 20 -- added to its starting spot -- 00000 -- equals 20). The next tag is 005. It is 17 characters long and begins at the 24th spot (4 + 20 = 24)

FORMATTED DISPLAYS:
The MARC Record structure consists of three
main component : the leader, the directory and the
variable fields. LEADER: The leader contains the data elements
which provides basic information about the item
and information for the processing of record. The
leader is fixed in length and is 24 characters
beginning from 00 to 23.
STRUCTURE OF MARC21 RECORD
00-04 Logical record length ( calculated by the computer) 05 Record status 06 Type of record 07 Bibliographic level 08 type of control 09 character coding scheme 10 Indicator count (always “2”) 11 Subfield code count (always “2”) 12-16 Base address of data ( calculated by the computer)
17 Encoding level 18 Descriptive cataloguing form 19 Linked record requirement 20 length of the length of field portion (always4) 21 Length of the starting character position portion
(always 5) 22 Length of the implementation defined portion
(always 0) 23 Undefined (always “0”)
A directory contains information about the tag ,
starting location of each variable field within a
record. Each entry is 12 character positions in
length. The directory is constructed by the
computer program from the bibliographic record,
based on the information contained in the record.
DIRECTORY
As the name suggests, the fields belonging to the variable fields can be of variable field length.
The variable field can be broadly device into the following categories i.e.
0XX - Control information, numbers 1XX – Main entry 2XX – Title , area of responsibility, edition, imprint etc. 3XX- Physical description, etc. 4XX – Series statement 5XX – Notes 6XX – Subject added entries
VARIABLE FIELDS
7XX – Added entries other than subject or series 8XX- Series added entries 9XX- Local fields XX is a digit code between 0 to 9 and represent a variety of
related pieces of information about a particular block. E.G 1XX is meant for defining the main entry and the
following fields are available. 100 – Main Entry under personal Name 110 - Main Entry under corporate Name
100 Main entry – Personal Name (NR) Indicator 1 : Type of personal name main entry
◦ 0 -Forename
◦1- Surname◦3- family name
Indicator 2: Undefined ◦ $a -personal name
◦$b - numeration◦$c -titles and other word associated◦with name ®
◦$q-fuller form of name◦$d-dates associated with a name
(generally year of birth)
