Bad weather and sickness have really taken their toll on our group lately, but we hope that is all behind us now! We are learning to crochet, and do hope our instructor will come back! It is fun, and we are learning, but have a long way to go. Our knitters are

still with us, and how we learn from each other! Anyone is welcome to join in this learning process on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Church.

We are in the small room next to Lee’s office (the library). Please join us!

Gifted, Representative, and Diverse

Congratulations to the Pastor Nominating Committee for having the Ministry Information Form approved by the Session and the presbytery through its Committee on Ministry in the same week. This is a major step forward in the search process. They now have permission to enter the position online and to begin receiving Personal Information Forms (resumes) through computer matching and by self-referral from interested pastors.

A little over four months ago, the congregation acted on a recommendation of its Nominating Committee and elected Mike Gardner, Barb Mourouzis, Erica Hicks, Frank Catrine, Debbie Shear, Melinda Neumann, and Don Caiarelli to serve as the Pastor Nominating Committee. If I were asked what are the three most important qualities in a pastoral search committee, they would be gifted, representative, and diverse. Right after those three, I would add committed, motivated, and patient. To the extent that a search committee possesses these qualities, the likelihood of finding a good match goes up considerably.

Since their election, the search committee has demonstrated all of these qualities. Gifted Coming from a variety of work places and life experiences, the committee is blessed with all the gifts it needs to navigate the multiple tasks of a successful search. They have computer and communication skills. They understand the nuances of job matching. They ask good questions. They are both spiritually and emotionally mature. More than that, they are gifted with a love of Christ and the people of this congregation and the surrounding community. Representative Together, the search committee connects to every major segment within the congregation; generationally, socially, and theologically. On any given Sunday, you can see them spread out throughout the worship space, engaged in conversation with different people. As a group, they share the joys and concerns, the hopes and the dreams of the congregation. Yet at the same time, they are clear that their task is not so much about finding the right pastor for what the people want as it is about their being a representative of Christ and what he wants on behalf of the congregation. Diverse Communication is more than language. It involves vision as well. Coming at a search from a variety of perspectives, one sees or hears something that another does not. As you can imagine, different perspectives leads to multiple options, which introduces conflict into the mix. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as a little conflict of ideas can bring about discovery and learning. This is all part of the sorting and discernment process. Committed, Motivated, and Patient After their election, the search committee began meeting just about every week. They have taken their commitment seriously. They are doing whatever it takes to get the job done. Clearly, their efforts with completing a Ministry Information Form that is expressive of the essence of the heart and energy of our church life is no small matter. They were very intentional in building upon the good work that was done with the Mission Study. And now they are learning about patience. In the days and weeks to come, they will be tested. They will have to hang in there with one another, with potential candidates, and with the Spirit. In other words, our prayers are being answered. Keep praying. There is still much work to be done. May all this come to pass… and even more. All this I wish and pray for you in the New Year. Thanks for sharing the journey. I am grateful for your support and encouragement.

Grace and Peace,

Lee
