TAGMissionStatement
Thisprogramprovidesdifferentiatedandacceleratedopportunitiesthatbestservestudentswithuniquegiftsandtalents.Studentsarechallengedwithavarietyofstrategiestomeetalllearningstylesbyprovidingdirectionandencouragement,allottingtimeandresources,sothestudentscanbecomeself-directed,life-longlearners,andproductivecitizens.Programming for talented and gifted students is amandated function in the state ofIowa (Iowa Code Chapter 59) for students in grades K-12. 12.5(12)Provisionsforgiftedandtalentedstudents.EachschooldistrictshallincorporategiftedandtalentedprogrammingintoitscomprehensiveschoolimprovementplanasrequiredbyIowaCodesection257.43.Thecomprehensiveschoolimprovementplanshallincludethefollowinggiftedandtalentedprogramprovisions:validandsystematicprocedures,includingmultipleselectioncriteriaforidentifyinggiftedandtalentedstudentsfromthetotalstudentpopulation;goalsandperformancemeasures;aqualitativelydifferentiatedprogramtomeetthestudents’cognitiveandaffectiveneeds;staffingprovisions;anin-servicedesign;abudget;andqualificationsofpersonneladministeringtheprogram.Eachschooldistrictshallreviewandevaluateitsgiftedandtalentedprogramming.Thissubruledoesnotapplytoaccreditednonpublicschools.

Formal identification of the talented and gifted students in Maquoketa CommunitySchoolDistrictoccursduring thestudents’K–2grades through teacher identification(Appendix A) and FAST assessment scores. Thereafter, students identified as talentedandgiftedwillhavetheirprogrammingneedsmet,monitored,andmodifiedbytheTAGteacherasneeded.TAG services include collaboration with the classroom teacher for the provision ofdifferentiated instruction, specializedservicesandextensionopportunities to studentsidentifiedbasedonareasoftalentsandgifts.
