Maps VS Globes

-Does not distort shape of the Earth-Can have ridges to show changes in elevation

In Globes

Maps VS Globes

-Lines of longitude and latitude-Absolute location-Compass rose-Find places and directions

How are Globes Made

Let’s Look at Maps…

Parts of a Map

CompassRose

-Is a design on a map that shows direction

Legend-Is a small table accompanying the map

that explains the symbols that are used on the map

Lines of Longitude-Lines that run from north to south, 0

degrees is located in Greenwich England known as the Prime Meridian

Lines of Latitude-Lines that run from east to west, 0

degrees is the Equator

Scale-Is the ratio between the distance between 2 points found on a map

compared to the actual distance of these points in the real world

Longitude and Latitude

• Cut and Paste Longitude and Latitude wksht in your Notebook

Map Projections• Map Projections: A map projection is

a way of showing the curved surface of Earth on a flat map

-Mercator Projection-Homolosine Projection

-Robinson Projection

Page 12: Maps VS Globes -2-D method of showing the 3-D Earth -Distorts size of continents and oceans since it is flat In Maps.

Mercator Projection• Named after

mapmaker Gerardus Mercator

• Accurately shows direction and shape of Earth’s landmasses

• Distorts distance and size

Homolosine Projection

• Developed in 1923 by John Paul Homolosine

• Projects equal area• Distorts ocean size

to not distort continent size/shape

Page 14: Maps VS Globes -2-D method of showing the 3-D Earth -Distorts size of continents and oceans since it is flat In Maps.

Robinson Projection• Developed by Arthur

H. Robinson in 1963• Shows correct shape

and size of landmasses for most parts of the world

• Does not show direction as well as Mercator

• Distorts size of North and South Pole

Types of Maps

Page 16: Maps VS Globes -2-D method of showing the 3-D Earth -Distorts size of continents and oceans since it is flat In Maps.

What different maps do we use to see natural and human made

features?

• Political Maps-Shows the features people have created such as cities, states, provinces, territories or countries

What different maps do we use to see natural and human made

features?

• Physical Maps-Shows the landforms and bodies of water found in particular areas; colors are used to show elevation

What different maps do we use to see natural and human made

features?

• Thematic Maps-These maps show certain information about a place or region

Map Projections

Page 20: Maps VS Globes -2-D method of showing the 3-D Earth -Distorts size of continents and oceans since it is flat In Maps.

How have maps changed overtime?

• The first map dates back to 2300 B.C• As explorers mapped the world, the

maps changed with them• Most modern maps are made with

GPS (Global Positioning Systems)

Table Discussion…• What are some

important parts of a map?

• Identify some types of map projections? What makes them different/similar?

• What are some specific types of maps?
