Introduction

• Parliamentary Committee• 2009 – 2011• Examine circular migration and development

• SOU 2010:40 (Mapping of circular migration)• SOU 2011:28 (Proposals)

• Used data from Statistics Sweden

Definition of circular migrants

• A person that in migration purpose had crossed the Swedishborder at least twice 1969 – 2009• The statistics is dependent on

national registration• persons with the intention of

staying in Sweden for a year or more shall be registered

• persons with the intention of live outside Sweden for a year or more shall be deregistered

What’s in the pipeline?

• Delegation for Migration studies• increase the opportunities to use research findings• strengthen the analytical and evaluation capacity in

Sweden in the field of migration

• New mapping• Statistics Sweden in collaboration with Swedish

Migration Board

Page 33: Mapping circular migration with register statistics Tomas Johansson Statistics Sweden.

International Workshop on Methodological Challenges for the Study of Return and Circular Migration

New mapping

• Suggestions to the Swedish government• Personal identification numbers also for short term

migrants (duration of each stay in Sweden is between 3 and 12 months

• New migration register• All migrations (both immigrants/emigrants and short term

migrants)• Information about the migrant

• sex, age, purpose of migration, occupation, length of residence permit, country of birth, country of origin/destination and more
