Maplebrook Parents and Students, What a pleasure it’s been to serve this school and community for 13 years! You have made my life so happy. Tech Tidbits Julie Weldon, Instructional Technologist

Save Your Recycling! Maplebrook collected lots of recyclable items this school year! This enables us to purchase technology-related equipment and supplies and helps keep these things out of landfills. Please continue to collect the items listed below from your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers during the summer months. The items may be dropped off in the computer lab when school resumes in August. Thank you! Cell Phones Inkjet & Laser Cartridges* GPS Devices Video Games & Consoles iPods Digital Cameras DVDs Laptops PDAs Scientific/Graphing Calculators

iPads/Tablets/eReaders *Brand name cartridges only please. CFK does not accept refillable cartridges.

Summer Sites Do you want to encourage your child’s learning through the summer months? Would you like him or her to be able to practice skills such as keyboarding when school is out of session? Maybe you just need a place to turn when after all the fun in the sun, your child exclaims, “I’m bored!” If you find this to be the case, please keep in mind Humble ISD’s Elementary SuperSites. This extensive list of interactive websites main-tained by the Instructional Technology Department, includes math, RELA, sci-ence, social studies, music, art, and computer sites among many others. Check it out this summer!

The MBE News Team has worked hard all year to produce our weekly broadcasts which aired through the school every Friday morning. Re-cently, the news team went on a field trip to KPRC Local 2 studio where we got an up close look at how their newscasts are made. Special thanks goes to Mrs. Ensey and Mrs. Feske for their help with the news team this year!

MBC at NBC (L-R): Mrs. Weldon, Zachary Seidel, Belle Caldwell, Joelle George, Arianna Garza, Merae Gilmore, Channing Hanks, Kennedy Pierce, Karina Van Marter, McKenzie Coker, Dakala Clark, Mrs. Feske, Sydney Bogan, Josh Dominguez, Madeline De Simone, and Emma Sims. In the anchor seats: Torin Hill and Miranda Rayburn.

Book Swap Do your kids have books around that are taking up space on a shelf?

Maplebrook is having a book swap! In order to promote summer reading we are inviting students to bring in gently used books and swap them out for other gently used, but “new to them” books. Students may bring in up to five books to swap. The amount of books they bring in is the amount they will be taking home (5 or less). You may also donate books to the book swap for students who may not have any books to bring in. The book swap will occur the week of June 2nd-6th. Guidelines

The books must be “GENTLY” used and may not have any writing or drawing on the pages. Students in grades 3-5 will bring in chapter books. Students in grades K-2 will bring in picture books.

The last week of school we will transform the library into a book store and students who bring in books may select new ones for summer reading.

Cafeteria Refund News If you are the parent of a student who will move to a different Humble ISD campus for the 2013/2014 school year, you may have questions about your child’s cafeteria account. Any balance that is in the account at the end of this year will follow your student to his or her new campus. That money will be available for the student on the first day of school. However, if your child will no longer be enrolled in a Humble ISD school or you would like your money refunded, please contact your current cafeteria manager. The campus manager will refund the remaining balance to you. You can receive your refund in person or by sending a written request with your child to the cafeteria manager. The last date to receive your refund is Thursday, June 5, 2014. After that time managers will deposit all remaining cash and will be unable to make refunds. Any refund request after this date will have to be made to the Child Nutrition office and a refund check will be mailed. The Child Nutrition Department wishes everyone a terrific summer and we look forward to serving all Humble ISD students in the fall.

Lost and Found If your child is missing something, please have him/her check the Lost and Found bin in the Commons. Items not claimed by the end of the school year, will be donated to a local charity.

Are You Moving?

If you are moving during the summer and your child will not attend Maplebrook during the 2014-2015 school year, please complete the Intent to Move Form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Please let us know even if you are moving to another Humble ISD school. Thank you!

IMPORTANT HAC INFORMATION

Do you have a Home Access Center (HAC) account? Now is the time to make sure you can log on or create an account. Mandatory HAC account updates for ALL students will begin August 4th. You will be required to update your account before picking up your back to school packet. At least one parent of every student will be required to have a HAC account. Please let us know if we can help you with your login. Try it now to prevent problems at the beginning of the school year. Please call 281-641-2900 for assistance.

Conflict Resolution http://www.kimscounselingcorner.com

Conflicts are a part of our lives every single day and because of this, we want our students to develop conflict resolution skills to help in these situations. There are many choices your child can make when in conflict in order to gain a win-win solution. You can help your child role play and decide when to use the following choices when in conflict:

• Talk it out (use an inside voice)

• Say "Please stop"

• Walk away and stay away

• Ignore...don't react

• Cool off (count to 10, take deep breaths)

• Say "I'm sorry"

• Share or take turns

• Use an I-message (I feel ____ when ____ and I need ____.)

• Have a Peer Mediation
