Maple Ridge council is takinga stand against any “mass burn”incinerators being built to deal withMetro Vancouver’s burgeoninggarbage problem.

Metro Vancouver is seekingfeedback on its draft solid wastemanagement plan, which includesa target of 70 per cent wastediversion by 2015. Part of theplan includes waste-to-energyfacilities, which could also includeanaerobic digestion and gasificationtechnologies as well as incinerators,to deal with 500,000 tonnes ofgarbage per year.

“There’s no magic to it. They dopollute. They pollute a lot,” saidCouncillor Craig Speirs. “If wedid one in this region it would bethe largest single point source ofpollution in the region.”

Speirs said Europe, which reliesheavily on incinerators, has highercancer rates and more pollution.

“We don’t have to go down thatroad, we really don’t. We haveoptions that aren’t available toEurope,” he said.

Speirs said the landfill in CacheCreek is a “very effective way ofencapsulating garbage which canbe dealt with later if we find a wayof doing that or just to keep a lotof those very toxic chemicals thatresults from burning out of the air.”

Speirs expressed concern thatbuilding incinerators would leadto burning material that could bediverting from the waste stream.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s private ora government-produced facility. Youhave to feed the beast. That’s justthe way it works,” he said.

Speirs said he’d like to see moreof a focus on reducing garbagegeneration and he said he’d like tosee a more ambitious target of 80per cent diversion by 2015.

Coun. Linda King said she wantsto see more of a focus on reduction.

“I think the main task that’s infront of all of us as individuals anda community is to become lesswasteful,” she said.

Shawn Gillam, 28, has been found guilty of shooting at a police carduring a police chase on June 30, 2008.

Court heard that Gillam was in a white van driven by KennethLavallee when a police officer put on his lights and a chase ensued. Apolice officer testified he saw what he believed to be a muzzle flash fromthe passenger side window, heard a loud bang and could smell sulfurwithin seconds.

Police put down a spike belt, which stopped the van and bothoccupants ran. Lavallee got away but Gillam was caught.

The police officer noticed Gillam had thrown away a bag. It was laterfound and had a magazine clip for a nine-millimetre handgun in it.Gillam’s hands were found to have gunshot residue on them. Police alsofound stolen watches.

Lavallee testified that he’d been given the magazine in exchange fordrugs and he told Gillam to put it in the bag.

Lavallee testified that the van they were driving was in poor conditionand backfired regularly and he said it backfired after the police officergave chase. An automotive mechanic testified that a backfiring vehiclecan produce a flash accompanied by a loud bang and there can bea sulfurous smell. However, Port Coquitlam Provincial Court JudgeAnthony Spence found that the flash, which the police officer testifiedhe saw coming from the passenger side window, wouldn’t be consistentwith a backfiring vehicle due the location it was seen.

Spence found Gillam guilty of six different criminal offences on Friday,including discharging a firearm with the intent of preventing an arrest,possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, knowingly possessing afirearm without a licence, possession of a firearm while prohibited fromdoing so, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and break and enterwith intent to commit an offence.

Gillam hasn’t been sentenced yet on the offences.

Kamp was at a councilworkshop to give an updateon various topics, includinghow the federal governmentis planning to deal withmedicinal marijuanadispensaries popping up allover the country. The AlwaysGrowing Green Societyopened up its doors inMaple Ridge in May, causingcouncil concern about howto deal with it.

King said marijuana isso highly used it’s hard toregulate.

“In the whole time I’vebeen elected (the RCMP’s)record of taking down growops has been stellar but it’snever reduced the numberof grow ops. It’s the samenumber so to me what we’redoing with our policies atevery level of government isspinning our wheels,” saidKing.

King said the amountof money being spent oncriminalization of marijuanais “huge.”

“I think that what we’redoing is not successful,” shesaid. “It doesn’t make anysense to me.”

King said she doesn’tcondone any drug inparticular but pointed outsome drugs such as alcoholand nicotine are legal. Shesaid Portugal and otherEuropean countries have hadsuccess after changing theirdrug laws.

“We really have to askourselves what are we doinghere,” she said.

Kamp said marijuana is“largely decriminalizednow in practice for smallamounts.”

“I think it’s safe to say ourgovernment doesn’t haveany interest in legalizationand little interest indecriminalization,” he said.“We don’t have an interestin the wide opening up ofaccess to marijuana.”

Kamp told council thatHealth Canada is reviewingthe medicinal marijuanaprogram and is consultingwith municipalities wheremedicinal marijuanadispensaries have opened upas well as law enforcementagencies.

“The question remainswhether the program isworking as it should,” hesaid.

Kamp said the programisn’t one that the federalgovernment “came up withon its own.”

“A court ruling almost adecade ago basically saidthat the Controlled Drugsand Substances Act was toorestrictive for people whocould benefit from marijuanaas a medicinal substanceso the program was kindof in response to that courtruling,” he said.

Kamp said there are noclinical studies proving theeffectiveness of medicinalmarijuana, which is why itcan’t be sold in a drug store.

He pointed out peoplecan buy dried marijuanafrom Health Canada, growit themselves if they havepermission from HealthCanada or designatesomeone to grow it for them.

Councillor Craig Speirsasked why the federalgovernment hasn’t conductedclinical studies on marijuana,adding there’s been a lot of

“private” research.He said the way the current

medicinal marijuana programworks there’s no “efficiencyof scale” for manufacturers.

“I know it’s an effectivemedicine for a lot of folks butit’s got to be accessible,” hesaid. “What’s produced bythe federal government isn’tappropriate for everybody, infact very few.”

He later added that the

marijuana the governmentgrows is “lousy.”

Speirs said he’d like tosee a “rational approach toproduction.”

“I think at some pointwe have to bring in someof the people some of thefolks behind setting up thedispensaries and get theirinput and allow them toget away from the shadowof organized crime. Theydon’t want to be associatedor be in the same categoryas organized crime so howcan Health Canada andthe federal governmentallow these people who call

themselves compassionate,and they are, to step beyondthe shadow and into thelight,” he said.

Speirs said if the federalgovernment put the programin place respecting a courtdecision it should work forpeople and if it doesn’t itshould be changed.

“Give people what theyneed not what people thinkthey need,” he said.

Councillor Mike Mordenwanted to know whencouncil could expect someanswers.

“From a policing standpointfrom a federal perspectivedo we have any kind of atimeline and are there goingto be any solutions offeredto us on how to deal withthis on a local basis becausebasically there’s a hole in the(medicinal marijuana act),”he said.

Kamp said from HealthCanada’s perspectivecompassion clubs ormedicinal marijuanadispensaries are “outside thelaw.”

“The questions then is howdo we respond to them,” hesaid, adding there has beenenforcement by police insome jurisdictions.

“I think law enforcementagencies are a little unsurehow to respond,” he said,adding police have questionsabout whether they couldsecure a conviction andwhether busts would be inthe “public good.”

“It is a challenge I know...as these compassion clubsand so on are multiplyingand coming into suburbanvenues,” said Kamp.

Councillor Cheryl Ashliesaid there are legal ways forpeople to access medicinalmarijuana and that’swhy she “struggles” with

medicinal marijuana orcompassion clubs openingup.

Ashlie said she’s heard ofthe organizations counsellingpeople on how to “presentwith symptoms” so they canget marijuana.

“There’s always loopholesthat people will try toabuse,” she said, adding shedoesn’t want to see peoplegoing through the “rightchannels” for medicinalmarijuana negativelyimpacted by those abusingthe system.

Mayor Ernie Daykin saidhe’s received phone callsrecently complaining aboutlegal grow ops in residentialneighbourhoods.

He said the challenge formunicipalities is they’vebecome the “de factorregulator.”

Councillor Al Hogarth wasunimpressed with the federalgovernment’s lack of action.

“My question is what theheck are they doing? Theyshould be stepping in andtaking some action not justreviewing the situation,” hesaid.

He said Health Canadashould be tellingmunicipalities this is whatyou should do and we will“back you up.”

“Someone is the test caseand it becomes very costlyto be the test case,” saidHogarth.

Hogarth said HealthCanada should also be ableto tell police where the legalgrow ops are but Kampsaid there are privacy rightsthat preclude that fromhappening.

Kamp admitted there are nocompliance or enforcementmechanisms that were builtinto the medicinal marijuanaregulations.

A 36-year-old Maple Ridge manwas struck in the face with a fireextinguisher at the Caring Placeon Friday night. The force of theassault knocked the victim uncon-scious, broke his jaw, and knockedseveral teeth out.

A 21-year-old Ontario man wasarrested. The incident occurred atabout 10:30 p.m. at the Caring Placein the 22100 block of LougheedHighway. The two men got into adispute, which ended when theyounger man hit the other manwith the fire extinguisher. Theassailant was arrested a short dis-tance away and was held in policecustody for a court appearance onMonday. The victim was taken toRidge Meadows Hospital by mem-bers of the B.C. Ambulance Service.❚ Ridge Meadows RCMP are

seeking charges of possession forthe purpose of trafficking, and pro-duction of a controlled substanceagainst a 27-year-old man and his25-year-old wife. Just after 5 p.m.on Saturday, police had to attenda report of a domestic disturbanceat a home in the 11700 block of208 Street in Maple Ridge. Whileensuring the safety of all occupants,police observed packages of mari-juana in plain view, along with whatappears to be a recently harvestedmarijuana growing operation.Police have seized the marijuana.

‘Spinning wheels’ on grow opsMP says medicinal marijuana program being reviewed, but councillor wanted to talk about decriminalizing the drug.

The City of Pitt Meadows has reachedan agreement with a music academyto lease the Struthers House on HarrisRoad.

The house — pictured on the right —will be rented by Bergthorson Academyof Musical Arts, currently located inMaple Ridge.

The Struthers House was hit by anarsonist in March and is undergoingextensive renovations which are

supposed to be completed in August.In addition to repairing damage

caused by the fire, the city had plannedother renovations for the house andthose are being done at the same time.

The house will be rented to the musicacademy for $1,469 per month and willbe adjusted annually by three per cent.

The city-owned house used to bethe location of the Ridge MeadowsWomen’s Centre and then was used

by the Katzie First Nation to storearcheological artifacts until the fire.

The house, located at 1229 Harris Rd.,was built in 1931 by William StruthersJr. who lived there until his death in1970. The City of Pitt Meadows boughtthe house in 1994.

It is a protected property on the PittMeadows Heritage Registry and is listedon the Canadian Register of HistoricPlaces.

Ridge woman will haveto attend court in October2010 to answer to fraudcharges after she tried tocash an altered cheque at abank in the MeadowtownMall. Just before 7 p.m. onThursday the woman wentto the Coast Capital SavingsBank, attempting to cash acheque. When it appearedthe amount on the chequehad been altered, RidgeMeadows RCMP were calledto investigate. Police wereable to establish grounds fora criminal case, and they arenow recommending charges.

Coun. Mike Morden saidhe understands the public isopposed to incinerators buthe’s not sure what the bestsolution is.

“It’s clear from all thepublic that I’ve talked tois they don’t want this tohappen in Metro or prettymuch anywhere. I’m notsold, the jury is not really outon the results as to what’sgoing to happen if they weregoing to put a facility outin the region. What wouldit actually be putting out inthe atmosphere? There’s allkinds of studies both ways,”he said.

However, he said he isconcerned about air qualityand public safety.

“The folks down inChilliwack and going downthrough the valley there, theyhave poor enough air qualitysituation on the go. Whywould you take the risk ofadding something to that?”he said.

Morden said he is not infavour of continuing to relyon landfills in order to avoidwaste-to-energy.

“I’m personally not infavour of burying anywaste at all. I just find thatthat doesn’t make sense.We’re just simply putting aband-aid on a problem thatneeds to be dealt with inour future our children andour grandchildren’s future.I don’t agree also withtrucking it for miles.... We’re

burning all kinds of fuelrunning it up to Cache Creek.I think we need to find bettersolutions to deal with that,”he said.

Morden said if a waste-to-energy facility is built itshould be operated by thepublic sector.

“It shouldn’t be done byprivate operators becauseprivate operators are strictlyin the business of makingmoney in this process,” hesaid. “I think they would nothave the right interests andmotivations at heart in doingthis.”

Port Coquitlam MayorGreg Moore, who is thechair of the solid wastemanagement committee,said public consultation onthe solid waste management

plan would end July 14. Thesolid waste managementcommittee will then discussthe plan on July 21 andMetro Vancouver’s board willvote on July 30.

Moore said if the waste-to-energy option is approvedMetro Vancouver would sendout a request for proposals tobuild a facility or facilities.

Moore stressed thatwaste-to-energy is just onecomponent of the proposedplan.

“Goal number one isto reduce the amount ofgarbage each individualproduces as well as businessand goal number two isdiverting as much garbagebefore we have to deal withthe actual residuals. By farthat’s the most important

part of the plan,” he said.He said the goal of waste-

to-energy would be to getas much energy recovery aspossible from the garbage.

Moore said there’s “nodenying incineration doescause some pollutants” buthe said incinerators offsetpollutants created elsewhere,like in landfills. He saidmodelling conducted forMetro Vancouver showedwaste-to-energy would“contribute less than oneper cent to the overall airquality.”

After a Zodiac safetyboat was stolen lastweek from the Pitt

Meadows Paddling Club, theclub was hit with more badluck: a marathon racing canoewas swept away with therising tide on Friday afternoonand hasn’t been seen since.

The Zodiac was stolen onthe night between June 30and July 1 after someone cutthe cable holding it in place.

The club has a temporarysafety boat to use during itspaddling programs but theyare hoping to get the club’sboat back.

Commodore Rick Hammerhad just done multiplerepairs on the safety boat.The boat has 13 patches— a couple were whiteand the newly placed oneswere black. The boat has anewly fabricated aluminumextrusion and one originalplastic one.

Hammer has posted anotice about the theft onwww.stolenboats.ca and hasfiled a police report.

The marathon canoe, whichmeasures 18 feet, six inchesin length and is 33 inches atits widest part, is a limitededition racing canoe anddoesn’t handle like a normalcanoe as it is quite “tippy,”Hammer said.

Hammer has spread theword of its disappearancewithin the marathon racing

community but he is alsohoping to get tips in casepeople saw it somewherealong the Alouette River.

Hammer said he wouldbe willing to offer a small

reward for the return ofthe marathon canoe orinformation that leads to itbeing found. Anyone withinformation can contact himat 778-899-8879.

on a residential property inthe 20300 block of HammondRoad in Maple Ridge. The theftoccurred between Sunday July4 and Thursday July 8. Thethieves cut a padlock off thestorage container and stolethe trail motorcycle, an aircompressor and assorted airtools, and a black Cannondalemountain bike.❚ Ridge Meadows RCMP are

is also against the law. She willhave to attend court in Augustin regards to the charges.❚ Ridge Meadows RCMP are

on the lookout for a man whostole an air conditioner fromRona. Just before 5 p.m. onThursday the thief walked intothe store at Lougheed Highwayand 212 Street in Maple Ridge.The man picked up a portableair conditioner and walked outof the store without paying forit. He got onto a red bicycleand started to ride off. A lossprevention officer interceptedhim but the suspect produceda machete, so he was ableto ride away. Police arelooking for a Hispanic male,approximately 5’10” tall,weighing 160 pounds, withbrown hair and brown eyesand dark skin. He was wearinga black hat, a black hoodedsweatshirt with white writingon it, a plastic vest (the kindworn by BMX stunt riders), awhite sleeveless t-shirt, blackshorts and white shoes. Hewas last seen riding his bikewest along the LougheedHighway towards 210 Street.

Two or three times a year I get to witness apriceless moment at the Tsawwassen ferryterminal.

Someone who has a one- or two-sailing wait sees anopportunity and cuts into the lane of traffic boardingthe next ferry. He usually gets no further than a half-dozen car lengths before he’s interceptedby staff and removed from the lane ofboarding traffic. Regardless of whateverexcuse or sense of urgency he mightplead, he’s then ordered to the very endof the line. He doesn’t get to reclaim hisoriginal place in line. He has to go to thevery end and likely now has to endureyet another sailing wait. The best partis all the other travellers cheering andhonking their horns in approval as hisjust desserts are handed out.

This is how justice should work.Someone breaks the rules and they are

immediately pounced upon and justiceis swift. It’s highly improbable a person would try tocut into the boarding lane again after having gonethrough this humiliating experience. Similarly, anyonewho watches this spectacle would no doubt bethinking twice about ever pulling such a stunt.

None of us enjoy sitting in line at theferry terminal, especially on a hot day.Some of the most miserable three-hour blocks of my life have been spenttrying to pass the time until boarding.No doubt it’s tempting to think aboutjumping the line, so obviously therehave to be some rules in place.

It’s a shame the people responsiblefor running the courts andadministering criminal justice in this country can’tgrasp the simplicity and effectiveness of how BCFerries maintains order on busy sailing days.

Imagine what would happen if BC Ferries had thesame approach to enforcing its rules as the justicesystem. People would be able to jump the line withlittle more than a warning from staff not to do itagain.

The rest of us would see that’s there are noconsequences for breaking the rulesand wonder why we should patientlysit and wait while others simply cutinto the line. If someone was actuallyintercepted by staff, he’d be able to offerup some lame excuse about a pressingappointment or some emergency and beallowed to jump the line anyway.

Needless to say, it would be absolutepandemonium and carnage come timeto board the next sailing, as hundreds ofmotorists attempted to cut in and staffwould be helpless to do anything aboutit. Meanwhile, civil libertarians andacademics would be howling that we

need to legalize line jumping.Yet this is precisely how criminal justice operates in

this country.Perhaps those in charge of administering justice

might care to take a look at how BC Ferries maintainsorder and keeps the peace despitedealing with thousands of frustratedand often angry travellers. There’s avery valuable lesson to be learned here.

It’s not unprecedented that the courtswould adopt a strategy or programfrom an outside agency. After all, ourmodern day justice system seems to bebased on the Department of Fisheriesand Oceans’ “catch and release” policy.

BC Ferries knows about justice

The fact our province’s deficit came inalmost a billion dollars lower than expectedis good news, but it should do little to soothethe ire of British Columbian voters.

In September, the Liberal governmentannounced the 2009 budget would run $2.8billion into the red. This week, it said itwould be closer to $1.8 billion. That’s animprovement, to be sure, but it’s still almostfour times the amount of red ink they fessedup to during last year’s election.

As late as April 2009, the Campbellgovernment was sticking doggedly tothe line that it could keep the deficit to amaximum of $495 million. Once dangerat the ballot box had passed, they wereostensibly gobsmacked to discover thefigure would be more than five times that.The slumping economy had taken themcompletely unawares, they insisted, and theywere as shocked as anyone.

From a government, such nonsense isoutlandishly irresponsible. By April lastyear, the financial crisis and wider economiccollapse had been underway for months. Tosuggest at that point that revenues wouldremain close to 2008’s was at best naive andat worst dishonest.

Democracy is built on the notion thattaxpayers can judge whether their dollars arebeing spent in the way they want. Withoutaccurate and realistic information, theycan’t do that. To fail in that regard is badgovernance, pure and simple.

The fact the Liberals found an extra billiondollars is praiseworthy; the fact they misledus is unforgivable.

Safety first this summerYears ago, the Red Cross ran an

advertisement aimed at boating safety.As a little boat loaded to the gunwales

with people moved away from the shore, anominous sounding voice-over came on.

“Every year the same thing happens; toomany people, not enough life-jackets.”

It is now some years since that TVadvertisement ran, but safety messagesremain as vital as ever.

Here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows,July brings an increase in the number ofpeople taking to the water to either boat orswim in Alouette Lake, Whonnock Lake, PittLake and others.

While Transport Canada has tightened uprules around boating, requiring operatorpermits for any motorized vessel of any size,the best approach to safety remains commonsense. The same goes for swimming anddiving. There is no lack of people whowould do anything to take back that momentwhen they did not take the time to do thenecessary checks first.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Thereare any number of reasons that safetyis compromised, from alcohol to over-confidence. But there really is no suchthing as an accident. The old saying is thataccident don’t just happen, they are caused.

Take some time to think about your ownand the safety of others. Summer will be alot more fun if you do.

I wish to express myoutrage over the proposal toexclude the Pelton propertyfrom the ALR.

It is incomprehensible tome that this is even beingconsidered. Not only shouldthis property be protected forits historical significance, butthis sizable property of 152acres has some of the richestand most fertile growingsoil left in the entire LowerMainland.

It is needed to sustain notonly for the present, butmore importantly, the ever-increasing future generations.The environmentaldestruction alone wouldbe devastating to the largenumber of wildlife in thearea.

plans to sell almost all of itto developers for the creationof industrial parks. Havinggrown up in Richmond, Ihave seen first-hand theloss of the richest farmlandin the world to industrialdevelopment, most of whichremain empty, and are stillup for lease, I might add.

I am not only saddened,but in total disbelief thatthis type of irresponsibleignorance still exists in 2010.

Furthermore, it is notlost on me that there is avery large financial gainto be made if this goesthrough. The mayor andcouncil have gone to greatlengths to get this approved.

This time they haveforwarded the applicationto the Agricultural LandCommission without anypublic consultation.

I would like to see aninvestigation into the entirematter.

I’ve often wondered whyso few friends come tovisit me in my Deep Cove

lair. Is it my big dog’s badbreath or my own pit bull-likepersonality?

The other day, I finallyfigured it out: Deep Cove ishard to find for many would-be visitors. If you’re tryingto drive to it over the SecondNarrows Bridge, there’s nosign telling you where theturnoff is.

There are signs to Dollartonor the Mt. Seymour Parkwaythat may be helpful tolocals. But they’re of littleuse to others. Road signageto many Lower Mainlandcommunities is terrible,offering little advancewarning of key entry and exitpoints.

Regular commuters alongHighway 1 obviously knowwhere they’re going. Butother drivers need large,clear signs to reassure themthey’re headed the right wayto, say Surrey, Langley orAbbotsford. And for longstretches they don’t see any.

“The signs are too lateand they’re not big enough,they’re not marked clearly,”Robinson told me, addingshe finds the road signs inand around the Alex FraserBridge and en route to theTsawwassen ferry terminalparticularly unhelpful.

“I just keep wonderingwho is in charge of this,”she said. “Does nobody takeresponsibility for this?”

Certainly, GlobalPositioning System devicesand Internet maps helpmake road navigation fareasier. But as Robinsonpoints out, not everyone hasthem, and they’re sometimes

inaccurate.Much-travelled Bob Orrick

of Delta told me he haswritten to TransportationMinister Shirley Bond tocomplain both about the“deplorable” lighting in theGeorge Massey Tunnel andpoor signage in his area.

Orrick, a former chief pettyofficer, said Bond repliedthat Victoria was consideringhaving signs with largerlettering. Which would be agood first step.

However, he stressed thatfar more needs to be done,at least if B.C. wants to catchup with other jurisdictions.“Even Jordan, for heaven’ssakes, has got better roadsigns than they have here,”he said.

Orrick noted poor signscause driver confusion andindecision. More than onelevel of government, ofcourse, is responsible for thesignage on B.C. roads.

Which is clearly part of theproblem.

volunteers to help out withthe Adopt A Block Society’sstreet clean-up campaign onSunday, July 25 from noonto 2 p.m., at the corner ofLougheed Highway and 228thStreet in Maple Ridge.

“Volunteering gives youththe chance to developtransferable skills,” saidAnushka Samarawickrama,Youth Services Officer.“Young people can add totheir resumes while making

important connections in thecommunity.”

Volunteers will receivetwo reference letters — onefrom the mayor of MapleRidge and another fromthe Ridge Meadows ServiceCanada Centre for Youth, inrecognition of their services.

Through the summer, spires of pink or whitefoxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) rise alongroadsides and in clearings — these can be

thick colonizers of recently baresoil but tend to thin out as otherplants re-establish and compete. Abiennial with tiny, fragile seedlings,foxgloves, seldom infiltrate wherehealthy vegetation is alreadypresent.

Originally from Europe, foxglovesare pretty, long-flowering andloved by hummingbirds and beesbut some people detest them dueto their huge seed productionand also because they’re verypoisonous.

Other gardeners love theirspectacular bells, long-flowering habits andsturdy stems but wear gloves when dealingwith them and remove all the unwanted seedcapsules. Gardeners with sensitive skin havereported soreness after from handling foxgloves.

Most of the 20 foxglove species originallycame from countries around the Mediterranean.Generally, they’re hardy to zone four, tolerantof most soils, reach about three feet (one metre)and are adaptable to sun or shade.

They bloom from the base of the flower spikeupward. Meanwhile, the stem grows longer, newbuds form, become flowers and seed capsulesstretch far up the stalk. Left long enough, seedcapsules will out-stretch flowers.

Their longevity is variable. A warm wintermay see a few biennial foxgloves becomingperennials (at least for a while). Meanwhile,perennial species of foxgloves are often short-lived (but not always).

Foxgloves have a long history as a magicalplant of many names including ‘DragonsMouth,’ ‘Witches Gloves’ and ‘Fairy Caps.’ Likeother ‘magical’ plants, foxgloves were used asmedicine by old-time healers. The drug digoxin,derived from digitalis, is still used today as a

strong cardiac stimulant.Seed of D. purpurea is easy to get. Though

the naturalized form is pink or white, anapricot-flowered foxglove hasbeen developed and comes truefrom seed. But the most popularis probably a D. purpurea hybridcalled ‘Foxy.’ If you plant this inlate winter, it should flower inabout five months from seed andthrow up several flowering spikesin yellow, cream, white, lavender,rose-pink and red with marbledmarkings on the blooms.

Among the foxglove species,one stand-out is D. ambigua (alsocalled D. grandiflora). Flowersare a beautiful, soft yellow and it

adapts well to small space because this plantonly stands about 2’ (60cm). It self-seeds,but not excessively. Some plants may becomeperennial.

This yellow foxglove has been crossed withD. purpurea to produce D. x mertonensis.This hybrid is notable for its evergreen leaves(which neither parent has) and large, crushed-strawberry coloured bells. It’s only two-feet(60cm) high.

D. ambigua has an tiny cultivar called‘Temple Bells which fits well into containers.’‘Temple Bells’ produces one-inch (2.5cm) bellson nine-inch stalks and if seed is sown veryearly it will flower later that year.

Not as spectacular, but equally easy to handleis the ‘Rusty Foxglove’ (D. ferruginea) whichgrows four to six feet tall but has smaller yellowflowers with brown veins. The leaves arebeautiful: narrow, dark green and shiny. Likethe yellow foxglove, the Rusty Foxglove is not arampant self-seeder which means seed capsulescan be allowed to remain without fear of direconsequences. Any saved seed remains viablefor many years and germinates easily whenplanted.

After seeing her father and a friend’s mother die of cancer,Cassandra Tracy has been inspired to try to raise moneyfor the Canadian Cancer Society.

On Sunday night, Miss Congeniality B.C. and 2009 MissTeen Maple Ridge and local scout commissioner Peter Tamwill put on a Retro Dance Party featuring classic rock from the1950s to the 1970s.

In addition to live entertainment and a dj, there will be food,a cash bar, vintage cars and a swing dance lesson, whereparticipants can learn simple swing steps in a circle format.

“It’s a lot of great people coming together to do a fun butcharity event,” Tracy said.

Tracy is an active member of Scouts and has been involvedin Girl Guides, Scouts, Rangers — “every kind of scouting”— and is currently a youth representative.

Volunteering is a big part of scouting, Tracy said, and that’swhy she wants to do her part by organizing this fundraiser.She also hopes the event will help bring the Maple Ridgecommunity together.

The Thomas Haney Secondary grad was recently chosen asMiss Congeniality B.C. at the Miss B.C. competition in FortLangley.❚ Retro Dance Party will take place on Sunday, July 18, from

7 to 10 p.m. at the Eagles Hall at 23461 Fern Cres. in MapleRidge. Tickets are $10 at the door. All proceeds will go to theCanadian Cancer Society.

On Saturday, the Royals had adouble-header against the VictoriaMariners. The Royals beat the visit-ing team 3-0 in the first game at 2p.m. but the Mariners came backwith a 7-6 win over their hosts at4:30 p.m.

The Maple Ridge Burrards met up twice with the NewWestminster Salmon Bellies in the past week and both gamesended with a score of 9-7 – first for the Salmon Bellies andthen for the Burrards. On Thursday night, the Burrardsfaced New Westminster and at first looked like they woulddominate the game with Derek Lowe and Joel Dalgarnoscoring the only two goals of the first period. But in thesecond period, New Westminster hit back with four goals.After the Burrards’ Sam Cook scored, the period ended 4-3for the Salmon Bellies. Andrew Murphy and Dalgarno scoredearly in the third to take back the lead over New Westminsterand the Burrards looked like they could take back the gameafter Curtis Dickson got a goal and Dalgarno scored his thirdgoal of the game. But New West put four more past theBurrards’ goaltender before the end of the game.

The Burrards played their regular home game on Sundaynight. The rematch between the two teams was a back-and-forth game. The Burrards, though, ended each period in thelead – they had a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, a 6-4lead at the end of the second and the game ended 9-7 for theBurrards. The Burrards play against the second-place VictoriaShamrocks on Sunday night at Planet Ice at 6:45 p.m.

During herlife, Eila donated to variousworthy causes related to thearts, health, education, peace,poverty and justice. Shevolunteered on numerouscommittees and organizations.Throughout her adult life, Eilawas a rich resource for localw r i t e r s a n d a c a d e m i c sinterested in the Canadian/Finnish culture. In 2008, hervast historical knowledge wasrecognized when she wasinvited by academics at UBC toprovide a speech on Finnishsettlement in Canada andBritish Columbia. Eila enjoyedall kinds of music.
